  1. The Colleens looked nice..... :004: Bob--would you do well as a bookie in Ireland I wonder? :003:
  2. Johnboy--how do you know? :011:
  3. And linoleum was made in quantity at Kirkcaldy. 1921 eh, Charles.? Not even Jock was alive then. Pshaw! But it is possible that Daddy Pimpernel was there, He could hardly have missed it since it was a pivotal moment in history--come to think of it I do remember daddy saying something about how he visited Fort George area for a breath of fresh sea air about that time and that must have been the time of the great decision to build Codswallop Hall . :012: Watt, the man who invented radar ,was born about 1918-1920 and Scarlet was born in 1938 and about twenty years after that became an underground radar operator in the RAF under the guise of being a National Service man--at 3 pounds 3 shillings a week no less. The British Government obviously continues to think that it is important for tradition to take precedence over doing the right thing and has gleefully continued this unfair, stingy, mean-spirited attitude by refusing to upgrade the pensions of all expats who live in a former Commonwealth country annually by the inflation rate allowed to all other former British pensioners living anywhere else in the world. So, if you need the pension money when you retire forget about emigrating to Canada to live with your sons or daughters..... :029: These photos from the archives are fascinating. Spent a couple of hours going through all the links. The notes about Mr Barron who became the owner of the Courier in 1910 (?) is probably of interest to you Charles. And horse trading and wool sales in Bank Street resulting from the vicious and bloody Clearances...and the fact that the original old Inverness had only three streets namely High Street, Church Street and Castle Street . What a find these photos are. 'Bye from Canada :sillywave:
  4. Well you are not alone in not fully understanding all these comments. Cloak and dagger ephemeral stuff with no back-up of facts or explanations ever. Dark, mystic thoughts , intriguing at first then ..............................what? :029: They just appear irregularly from time to time just to liven up the forum when there is a bit of a downer on from poor results. I liked the comments though about HMS Sneck on the water inlet with the sun fading into the distance--bright, down-to-earth thoughts which remind me of better days of yore. :002:
  5. You have been on about these rumours before Scotty and Scarlet is hotching to find out what this is all about but there sure seems something afoot that is stopping a free flow of energy in the team. Not only is it disappointing but also alarming-where do we go from here.? Is it lack of spirit, lack of cohesion, poor tactics, wilful players not wanting to work or play for each other or what other dark forces are at work? :024:
  6. Croatian lad--don't even try to understand what they are on about. I am even moving my lips in sync to the words reading them very slowly.
  7. Well, well, both the ICT game and the Gretna game are now being broadcast. So see you later maybe. BBC--- :sillywave: :clapping03:
  8. Same here in Vancouver, Canada--only I tried both the ICT V Dundee United and the Gretna games but both are blocked (apparently). The BBC chooses to state against one game that the match is unavailable and on another says nothing. But both always seem to be blocked. Since, as Scotty says, the ICT game was supposed to have been broadcast, frankly it's virtually impossible nowadays for an overseas listener to know at any time whether any game is being broadcast or not.So you take your chances and I got up at 5 a.m this morning just in case it was on at 1400 hrs. And, as Scotty also says, the game may not be too thrilling but for us overseas it is the only weekly thrill we can access. I think I will have to get "into touch" with Mr Smith again. I also noticed that the Sportsound page says that the game started at 1500 hrs whereas another of the BBC Sports pages stated that it was to start at 1400 hrs. Did you say you are listening to the Gretna game--how? :029: :cdn:
  9. "nuff said. Give him half a chance and he will turn out to be a winner in a blue jersey. :021:
  10. Oh My ! Why don't you girlies invite that nice Croatian lad to join you at a game. Surely between you you can make his day......... :001:
  11. Good luck to Richie Hart who played hard for the club. Judge him on his football commitment --he was given a second chance and as far as I know he did not fluff it a second time. Sanctimony--right on! Remember holy-er than thou brigade---"there but for the grace of God go I". And if you have led such a perfect life that you don't remember ever having made a mistake that you know was very poor judgement on your part then I say you are unlucky because you haven't learnt that to err is human. :018:
  12. Scotty You certainly did send me the lsit of non-blocked games and I consulted this yesterday to note the St Mirren game was, apparently, NOT blocked. So I got up early to access the audio links and EVERY ONE was showing as "Unavailable to Overseas Listeners" In addition, I tested every single one of the links and not one was broadcasting any audio. However, that may be because the BBC may not click them onto the air waves until 1 minute before kick off. And there exp[anation for that is that "it takes time for us to link up all the games "... so much so, poor lads and lasses , that sometimes they can't even get started by kic -off time! Oh well, I suppose in some circles these days 80 years of broadcast experience is not quite enough .................. :dunno:
  13. In fact every single SPL game being broadcast is shown as "Not available to Overseas Listeners". And why can't they put this information on the site the previous day.? Obviously Overseas Listeners have to get up very early to tune in . I sent an email to the BBC SOME TIME AGO but they ignored it--NOT EVEN THE COURTESY OF A REPLY. :018: Charles--what is then problem with the BBC these days?
  14. Well--isn't that nice and soooo typical of the BBC these days. Sportsound says that the St Mirren game is "NOT AVAILABLE TO OVERSEAS LISTENERS" so naturally I did not tune in--up early though. Now here I am listening to the game. What IS the problem with the BBC Charles ? :029: :008:
  15. Reading glasses after fifty--co-incided with the loss of hair on the pate. Driving glasses after 65--Does make a heck of a difference--can now see the cops well in advance.. :003: Unfortunately they brought radar in on the roads here and they still have the advantage. (the cops I mean, not the glasses) Heilandee-- I think you are from Fife --am I right? Only in Fife do they say "they " meaning "these".... ;D
  16. Since I knew Telford from a past life I do assure you there was no confusion with Wade --in fact dearie if you read Scarlet's post you will find no mention of the suggestion that Wade built the Caley canal as the observant and knowledge Charles did aver. :003: . I lived on Dunain Road which ran down to Telford Street so being a nosey wee b--gger from an early age I soon found out the truth of who built it. Ruthven castle was little more than a barracks for the troops I understand and isolated as hairoil but it sure looks imposing and--a little scary---ghostly even......whhhhhhooooooooOO! :evil06:
  17. Charles There seems to be quite a few Bannermans involved with this club--Inverness City. Are they related to you? "Dangerous" Bannerman is a forward of some note in the team and Jennie is the Treasurer it seems. Haven't dug any deeper but maybe there is a connection with you, even distant? Just asking :016: Hoch! Hoch!
  18. And the difference between going downtown and going uptown is..? :016:
  19. Pouffe was something to sit on. Nowadays it still is. :028: Although the spelling has changed a little :014:
  20. And IHE is looking at you all from the poop deck pof HMS Sneck. :sillywave: Charles thanks for that --the references to Culcabock are great. I also checked out that link and have spent a very interesting half hour looking at the photos from the distant past--quite fascinating I must say. I learned for example that horse racing was a big deal in Inverness going back to the 1700's ending up in the Dunain district and was a big social event once per year. Jim Smith was born on Ross Avenue not Smith Avenue--I stand corrected. I just love this kind of thread ! :hairy01: General Wade went on to build many bridges and other engineering marvels (other canals) throughout the U.K. in addition to his great feats in Scotland. Did he not come into Scotland in the first place on orders to pacify the Highlands by opening it up with roads and bridges and to ensure that no further rebellions could take place (that woudl threaten the Government or Monarchy of the time? :024:
  21. Gretna have sent David Bingham to Cowdenbeath on loan. Missed by all probably because they think Gretna are not that important. S P likes to look under carpets--you never know what you might find..Ha! :002:
  22. A.F. Thistle trying to scare you off visiting the Caley Park lest they lost your allegiance to a more entertaining team no doubt? :002:
  23. And Charles ,do you or anyone else know the origins of the word Culcabock where my Grandparents and Uncles resided during my early lifetime in the town. It's an unusual name . :rolleyes02:
