What's your job

Sometimes, when I'm bored, I'll look at posters profiles and their posts and try and guess what type of work they do. I know the professions of a number of people but there are many I don't know. I think I know who are school children and students. I think I may know of one or two who are either retired or unemployed and I try to guess the rest.

So what do I do? I'm a production technician on an oil platform. Whats that some may ask. I look after the equipment that processes and exports the oil and gas that comes out of the wells.

My main career was in IT. I worked for ICL for 26 years before being made redundant at the age of 51. I then started my own small company specialising in the Project Management and installation of computer based systems. I wound this company up a few years ago when I reached 60, since when I have done as little as possible, apart from some part time limo/chaffeur work. These days i just do some voluntary work for a couple of well known charities.

Let me see .... in my "official" work, I am a Global Software Administrator for an Engineering Consulting company here in Toronto (or slightly west of there in Mississauga to be precise). We consult on all sorts of projects in the Metals, Mining and Infrastructure fields and have major offices on every continent of the world.

My job involves researching, evaluating and then purchasing all of our engineering software as well as looking after all of our license servers in the various offices globally. I troubleshoot server issues as well as licensing issues and I also have to do a significant amount of technical writing so that we don't get too many "pebkac", "ID-10T" or "Layer 8" errors when users try to install the programs (techies will understand my acronyms - the rest of you can google them).

In my other life ..... Web Design helps pay the bills for keeping CTO online.

I switch things off and switch them on again.

Alex, what do you think I do then, and I'll tell you.

I think you could be about to leave, or have already left, the RAF. I also think your skills may revolve around weaponry and or maintenance.

Well your not far wrong, I've got at most 2.5 years left in, I joined up as a Electronics Tech, That changed to Telecomms op, in my time in I've done HF Radio Comms, then Telecommunications, then 2nd line IT/Networking in the hot sandy place with EDS, Now adays I run a helpdesk dealing with fault reporting, first line and second line fixs on hardware and Software faults also dabble in Networking and data comms..

Rosscoe23 will not publicly state his occupation - although most of us know what it is - and chooses to make snarky comments about others on this thread so he has been banned from it. Dee - This user's actions in this thread are indeed what we are on about.
