I am planning getting a ?300 laptop which is a major step for a technophobe like myself.

Is THIS a good deal?

I currently have a Dell Dimension 3000 which decides to freeze when AVG is updating or firefox plugin container is running.

What I would like is advise on browser, media player, anti-virus/firewall, etc. It comes with Windows 7 installed and Bullguard (which I've never heard of). I will be installing Office 2010. Any and all advice would be gratefully received.

Id say that the Laptop itself is a reasonable deal. But...heres the problem....its from ebay. I think if anything goes wrong, you might well struggle to get anything done to fix it. I avoid buying any electrical or expensive goods from the likes of ebay...as i prefer to be able to return to the store to have it out with someone in person, should something go wrong.

As for the other question. Id just go for AVG FREE anit virus. I been using that for about 8 yrs and not once had a virus. Windows Firewall will suffice and i just use windows media player for movies and music etc.

Apparently they've sold over 700 in a few days and 600 'n' odd to go, hmmm. Is there a better deal around for the same money? I have a problem with buying things in that I don't worry about what if scenarios and fortunately I've been alright up until now. I could buy it from their other online shop for ?350 and the original retail price for the laptop is over ?400. Got to have it really.

It's the premium version of AVG I have at the moment and it's a drain on my desktop. I had AVG free before which was great and thought this was a good move. Thanks for the advise Smee.

All about doing your homework with ebay sellers and if they have a separate online shop and you are comfortable that you'll get good service then it sounds better than most.

Regarding AVG....I was a big fan of it but noticed more recently that it had started to become a bit of a resource hog. After trying some alternates I switched to Microsoft Security Essentials and so far so good on that. Another vote for using Windows Firewall from me too.

One other programme I put on every new PC/Laptop is CCleaner (Crap Cleaner). It does exactly what it says on the tin.
