My recommendation would be .... don't get a netbook !!! As a technology they are likely to go the way of Betamax thanks to the wave of tablets hitting the market!

A better bet would likely be an iPad2 [or by Xmas possibly iPad3], or one of the other multitude of iPad lookalikes or clones flooding the market. I would also caution against the Blackberry Playbook as it is getting horrible reviews over this side of the pond because many feel it was rushed out and think it is "unfinished" especially in terms of connectivity if you dont actually have a blackberry with a tethering arrangement -- one of the major reasons why RIM are losing market share and have just announced they will be laying off 2000 staff !!!

If you absolutely must get a PC type device, invest in a small form laptop rather than a netbook. It will be more powerful, it will last longer, and be more compatible with most PC software ... it will also not be that much more expensive (if at all).

hmmmm

ipad is out of the question. wife aint all that great with it stuff hence the surfing the web limit of use

what exactly is the difference between a netbook and a small form laptop?

i had thought of something like an asus or or acer as from reputation they are both good brands

here's a decent comparison on the HP site .... http://h20219.www2.hp.com/hho/us/en/pclc/articles/netbook-guide.html

basically a netbook is usually slower (Atom processor), has less memory (up to 2Gb max), and does not have a DVD/CD drive. Early ones used to run Linux but most now run Windows.

none of that is an issue if all its needed for is surfing and light tasks.

Faster cpu's are now starting to appear in netbooks, the atom's are a bit underpowered. Having said that I've got two atom powered net-tops (quiet, small & cheap with hdmi) here that I use under the tv's as media players with XBMC. Both are running windows 7 & manage 1080p HD video playback just fine. So even a atom powered netbook will be powerful enough to surf the net, email and do everyday office tasks.
