Gary Cornish

I see that Gary Cornish took the latest step up in his career with a comfortable win against an experienced opponent.

Very early days yet in his career and I appreciate he has yet to fight anyone with any real pedigree but I wonder if there is an Invernessian sporting hero in the making.

I'd consider going to a boxing match for the first time if he was fighting a big bout in the Ironworks. I nearly went to a boxing night at the Drummosie a few years ago...until I saw the ticket prices!

Hope he can keep up his excellent record and maybe get a major fight soon. He's got an experienced manager who won't throw him in too deep, too soon. I'd like to see him take on Martin Rogan, the Northern Irishman.

The ICT players are not the only sportsmen bringing credit to Inverness.

Inverness now has it's very own international boxing heavyweight champion. Gary Cornish beat Hungarian Zoltan Csala by a knockout in Glasgow on Saturday to claim the IBO heavyweight Championship. The belt itself is is a bit of an unregarded 'Mickey Mouse Trophy' but the opponent represented a step up in class for Gary who is now unbeaten in twenty one professional fights.

He is beginning to appear on the radar of the big promoters and already has Kellie Malone in his promotion team. He is probably now just a fight or two away from fighting for the British Heavyweight title.

It may not be beyond the realms of possibility that Inverness could have a Word Heavyweight champion in three years time.

Next fight is against John McDermott - the current holder of the English Heavyweight belt. It's a final eliminator for a tilt at the Commonwealth Heavyweight Championship.

I've certainly heard of McDermott and looking at his record, he's been in with some big names previously. He's been 'inactive' in over a calendar-year so doesn't feature in the current UK rankings. Cornish is now at no.7.

1. Tyson Fury

2. Dereck Chisora

3. Anthony Joshua

4. David Price

5. Hughie Fury

6. Ian Lewison

7. Gary Cornish

Edit. The fight is on July 3rd.

He has done great, especially considering the fact he only had 9 amateur fights (I think). After his opponents pulling out for his planned British title eliminator earlier on in the year, it will be good to finally see how he copes with moving up a level.

Also, signing with Kellie Maloney certainly won't do him any harm and should make it pretty easy to get decent fights (even if he does lose his next fight) with the amount of publicity she is getting now.

Impressive that he's now ranked above Michael Sprott and Matt Skelton. It'll be tough for him to push on into the top 5, some big names there, all potential World Championship contenders once the Klitschkos retire. Particularly if the WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF belts aren't unified.

I reckon Cornish could sell out Hampden Park if you put him up against an English World Champion.

Huge fight lined-up for Cornish on the 12th September. He's fighting Anthony Joshua at the O2 arena in London.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/boxing/33559163

The BBC link states the 21st September, but I'm sure they've transposed the numbers, as that's a Monday. (12th is a Saturday). 'BoxRec' website has it as 12th.

Anyway, the contest is for the Commonwealth Heavyweight title - a belt no Scotsman has ever held in its 123 year history!
But Joshua has had an explosive professional career after leaving the amateur ranks on a high with a London Olympics gold medal. And he's won all his fights by knockout.
Cornish has also won all his Pro fights, so shouldn't be outclassed.
Go Gary!

A huge step up in class for Gary when he takes on Olympic Heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in London tomorrow evening. The Highlander is the outsider but is not without a chance of maintaining his 100% record and truly announce himself on the World stage.

All the best Gary.....

Where does he go now? The manner of the defeat means very few of the bigger promoters will see him as a money drawing opponent. One silver lining though, he barely took any punishment and wasn't seriously hurt. It was a good early stoppage from the ref IMO.

Some will be writing him off, but his only defeat has come from a potentially world class opponent (who Wlad Klitschko rates as the best heavyweight prospect for 25 years). The fight clearly came too soon for him. The step up in class between Joshua and his previous opponents was too steep. But it was too good an opportunity to turn down. He's still young and healthy enough to rebuild. Hopefully he keeps grafting and gets some more big money fights down the line.
