Room 101

Whilst at the Burton Albion v Bristol Rovers game on Saturday (with the Bristol branch of the ICT supporters ‘club’) I picked up a match day programme.

Within its glossy pages was a ‘Considered Thoughts’ section in which the writer selected three football related items to go into Room 101.

As you probably know Room 101 is TV programme hosted by Frank Skinner (and Paul Merton prior to that) in which three panelists are asked what they disliked to such an extent that they would like to banish it to a darkened room from where, hopefully, it would never emerge again.

The three item he selection where:-

  1. All seater stadiums.
  2. Banish squad numbers.
  3. 4th officials.

I must admit I kind of agree with all three but these would be my selections:-

  1. Bookings for players who ‘over celebrate’ a goal with their fans.
  2. Players having to go off the field of play after being treated for an injury.
  3. Neil Lennon

1: Defenders not even facing the ball as it comes into the box. Instead, trying to bodycheck the opposition players.

2: Players stealing 15/20 yards at throw ins or free kicks.

3: Players who fall down in either penalty box hoping for a penalty or to take pressure off their own defence.

4. Pity I'm only allowed 3 choices.

Good topic, Gringo!

  • Defenders 'shepherding' the ball out for a goal-kick, obstructing the attacker from getting to it!
  • Kick-off times dictated by TV.
  • Having to remove my scarf and zip/button my jacket up to the neck (to hide my ICT top) to get into certain "No Football Colours" pubs.

These things are all things that that anger me when carried out by opponents, but when our guys do it, it's all just part of the game.

1. Live Football on Satellite/terrestrial TV (beyond a reasonable level, i.e. Cup Finals, World Cup etc but not League football)

2. The whole elitist thing that has arisen because of 1), i.e. The Premiership, Champions' league etc.

3. Clive Tyldesley

1. The loss of local players. I don't bother watching the EPL anymore. Thankfully, not quite as bad as in the SPL but a team dominated by Africans, Spaniards and South Americans doesn't represent, e.g. Sunderland, Aston, Arsenal etc.

2. Pretending to be injured.  So embarrasing. If you need treatment, then off the pitch for a minimum of 5 mins to protect your health and safety. Anything else is reckless or play-acting. It would cut it out straight away.

3. Young players leaving for a seat on the reserve benches at a Championship club or somewhere, rather than helping Aberdeen, Dundee United etc. to win cups, do better in Europe and so on, thereby enhancing their profile, developing their talents in first-team football and helping their club achieve success...which would enable them to bring in/keep players thereby...see beginning and repeat.  It would help the whole league.

Good topic.  Difficult to stop at 3 so I will go for one about the way the game is played, one about grounds and one about the wider influence on the game.

  1. Players being allowed to shepherd the ball out of play when they are clearly guilty of obstruction
  2. All seater stadiums which have destroyed an important social element of the game
  3. The obscence structure for the distribution of wealth in the game - which has just got worse today.

A hum, Im going slightly controversial with my three.

1. Football getting involved with political/social issues. (Sucks)

2. Pissing around on the pitch shaking hands etc before kick off (get on with the football thats what were there to watch)

3. Minutes applauses (why it's so easy to make a noise, go back to tradition keep it quiet)
