  • 2 weeks later...

A wee 'bump' for this thread, as these games are this Saturday. (With the exception of Stirling Uni v Albion Rovers, on Sunday.)

Which is an interesting game, in its own right. The Uni's female manger has had an immediate impact on the Lowland League club's fortunes - it'll be fascinating to see if she can create history by overseeing a win against SPFL opposition. Andy Gray and Richard Keys would be pleased!

I think they were 1-1-4 (W-D-L) and bottom when she took the reigns - but are now 6th with a 5-1-0 record since she took over.

I can't make Sunday's ICT-County derby, so will go to either Nairn (most likely), Brora or Elgin on Saturday for my fix.

Just been looking at Elgin pubs on Google Street Maps. There's one called the Muckle Cross which I looked at - possibly 'then' called The Ionic Bar when the Google car passed taking its photos. A warm welcome guaranteed for all.

Alternatively, Brora are playing against Juniors, Banks O' Dee. I haven't seen a lot of Junior football, but am aware of the 'rivalry' in, particularly, Ayrshire. There, I've introduced it - I'm now justified in posting this extraordinary photo of a Juniors 'game'.

In the foreground, the obligatory Buckfast bottle can be seen in use as a makeshift weapon. Meanwhile, to the rear of the shot, one punter lamps another....

I think you have to remember that Uni teams often struggle at the start of the season till the term starts. However SUFC players are more or less professionals anyway as most people connected with 'traditional' clubs such as myself will be happy to tell you.......

Ferguson Park, Rosewell for me on Saturday. Whitehill v East Stirling.

I thought the Highland Derby was going to be on BT Sport? I've just started using it but every time I switch on expecting a live game it's never on

I certainly expect a 'non-league' team to beat a league side this weekend - Turriff United and Whitehill Welfare definitely have a fighting chance!

Barry Ferguson's face will be a picture if he's humbled at Turriff!!!

Skysports 2. Good excuse for a sunday lunchtime in the pub to recover from the early morning kirk service

Stirling University 1-4 Albion Rovers

That result completes a thoroughly disappointing series of games for the non-league clubs, this weekend!

Could it just be that the bottom tier sides have 'upped their game' as a result of the new Pyramid system, now in place? Including Brora's loss to East Fife in the Challenge Cup, The top HL and LL sides have lost 8 and drawn 1 of the 9 games against the teams from the SPFL's lowest division, this season. A few years ago we'd have expected a few apparent 'shocks'.

Coincidence? Maybe not.

Only 2 Highland League clubs (unless Forres win their replay) are in round 3 - the lowest ever, in the current format. The days of the Highland League being superior to their non-league Southern counter-parts seem gone.

And the top central-belt juniors continue to impress.

Admittedly, Brora are better than the rest of the teams in the Highland League, but any thoughts of them 'routinely' beating the Lowland league champions, then the bottom club from League Two to secure SPFL status, should be delayed.

Although competitive, it may be that the 'quality' of the Highland League has slightly diminished in recent years, and the chickens are now coming home to roost.

But that's the beauty of the Pyramid - complacency has to go - clubs need to continuously strive to improve or they'll not progress.

The days of happily standing still for 20 years in the bottom league, like say Montrose, are over!

Dont hold with that statement Sneckboy. I think both Highland and Lowland teams are on a par with each other. There are only three lowland teams through so far. Two from the east and one from the west. Had Bo'ness had a better class of draw than Culter then I doubt they'd have progressed. Hurlford were a bit of a surprise. Not one of the more prominent of East League teams.

Credit where credit's due! 13 / 16 is a very creditable return! You 'trumped' me (as my bank manager will discover on Monday morning)! I got 12 for that round.

Just looked back at your 1st Round return 15/18 = 83%.

This round, 13/16 = 81%

Would it be fair to assume the percentage score would be expected to get lower as the rounds progress? Maybe 75% next time (12/16)....

Round 3 if you're interested!
