Incredible how all the "big" teams are drawn against each other, as are the lower league/non-league sides.

5 all-premier ties with the other 2 Premier sides facing Rangers and Hearts, meaning 7 of the the top 14 sides in the league set up will be knocked out at the first opportunity.

Increases the prospect of a relatively easy tie for the sides that get through.

There were plenty better draws at this stage!

We've met them once before in the cup - winning 1-0 in Paisley in the 'last 16' a decade ago.

Not a good draw - but they'll be thinking the same! Winnable, though - don't care if it takes a replay!

Remember it well, it was notable for being the only time Darran Thomson made a worthwhile contribution!

The match report from that game taken from this site:

Victory snatched from the jaws of a goal-less draw. Caley Thistle spent most of the game pinned in their own half by a Saints side totally transformed by the new management team of Gus MacPherson and Andy Millen. Illness and injury played havoc with John Robertson’s team selection and the squad was stretched to the limit. The match was played amidst hail, sleet, rain and eventually driving snow but there was never any question of the 90 minutes not being completed. It all started slowly then in 15 minutes Saints claimed a penalty when Simon Lappin went down but play was waved on. Seconds later Mark Brown made the first of many fine saves when he dived to push away a John O’Neill header. The pressure on the visitors’ goal was relieved in 24 minutes with a break upfield and a free kick 30 yards out. Bobby Mann’s low ball was touched for a corner by Stevie Woods. Saints continued to press and just before the break Brown was at full stretch to collect a 15 yard chip from Ricky Gillies. Brown’s inspired form continued to deny Saints in the second half despite two good efforts from Gillies then in a rare venture on Woods’ goal Paul Ritchie hit a low shot wide. Brian McGinty had two chances in 62 minutes but he was foiled by Stuart Golabek then hit low past the post. The tide began to turn in the 74th minute when Mann headed past following a Liam Keogh corner then four minutes later Saints were stunned to lose a goal. David Bingham turned Kirk Broadfoot to create space then a neat flick set up Darran Thomson just outside the box. Woods managed to reach Thomson’s low shot but it rolled over the line for what proved to be the winner. It was very close to 2-0 just two minutes later when Keogh sent in a dangerous cross from the right. Ritchie ran into the box to reach it but his shot cleared the bar. Saints did not give up but their cause was not helped by a snow shower. In 86 minutes Grant Munro cleared a dangerous ball with Brown beaten then play switched to the other end. Ritchie won a corner on the right a minute over time then more precious seconds were wasted when a free kick was awarded close to the corner flag. The whistle went, Saints felt robbed but it was Caley Thistle who moved into the Quarter Final draw for the fourth time.

Note Robbo's dilemma due to injury and illness yet we started with Brown, Tokely, Munro, Mann, Golabek, Thomson, McBain, Duncan, Keogh, Bingham and Ritchie.

The season Brewster stopped our chance at the final.

.....and yet another away cup game for us! Still, I'm not complaining because we lost our last home cup game badly against DU! Nevertheless, not counting the "neutral" semi finals and finals, I make it 10 away ties to 3 home in both cups since 12/13 season...

All in all I think that's a great draw.  It's what the cup is all about.  The non-league sides have a real chance of progressing whilst the draw guarantees several lower league sides getting in the 5th round draw and enhances the chances of a smaller side going a long way into the competition.  It really is quite extraordinary that of all the Premier League sides, Kilmarnock are the one who have the lowest placed opposition with their match against the Rangers.

St Mirren should hold no fears for us.  The fact that they are a Premiership side means there will be no question of over-confidence or fear of embarrassment which so often does for teams playing lower league opposition.  We know we have to play well to beat them so as long as we just go out there and do what we are good at, we should get the result.  Just have to wait until the 5th round for Brora!

Maybe so but over the long haul these things tend to balance out. Since 04/05 season, and not counting semi's, finals or replays, we've been drawn in 12 league cup home ties against 14 away. For Scottish cup its 17 home ties against 6 aways.

Personally I think away ties are better for us. The away fans get more behind the team and 1200 or so at TCS makes the place pretty dead.

Wow! the odds are against the 14 most formidable forces in Scottish football (apologies for that oxymoron  ) among 32 teams all being drawn together in seven ties are pretty long. It's actually 41,209 to 1! I wonder if the Cup sponsors were offering bets?

It's only when you get down as far as Hibs that you get any disparity in the apparent "heavyweight" factor in their draw - so maybe this is Hibs' year!

But that draw says that seven major forces -  5-7 Premiership teams or Hearts/Rangers - will go out at this early stage.
