We have filled the position before, we can again. Just hope it doesn't ruin our form and season potential if it goes ahead. It may mean we can offer slightly better terms to the others though... Every cloud and all that.

Wigan are also expected to complete a deal for Callum McManaman to move to West Brom for £4,5million this week.  With that sort of cash available and with them fighting for survival in the Championship, one might have thought they could afford a good bit more than £150,000 for Billy's services for the rest of the season.  They have also got an "undisclosed" fee for Shaun Maloney moving to Chicago Fire.  Billy is a very important player for us and his departure could well affect our position in the league.  It must be a difficult decision for the Board to balance what is on offer with the potential financial impact of him leaving.  Can't blame Billy though.  If he is off I am sure he goes with our best wishes and grateful thanks for all he has achieved for this club.

I'm sure Wigan can afford more than £150k, but they know that Billy could leave for free in 6 months (or sign a pre-contract), so the ball is in their court. From ICT's perspective, this will ensure another year in profit, but I agree that it is likely to impact on our league position. Put bluntly, £150k is roughly two league positions.

Let's be honest, this isn't a surprise.  In some ways it is a pity he didn't go a year ago when many folk on here were estimating his worth in the millions. That way the club would have been better off and we'd have had a year to find a replacement.  I honestly don't think it would have altered our league placings greatly either last season or this season, as it is only in the last few weeks of that 12 month period that he seems to have found his scoring touch again.

Nevertheless, I'll be sorry to see him go.  At least it isn't to Aberdeen.  Looks like he'll be playing in the 3rd tier of English football next season judging by Wigan's current performances.

Statement from Club Chairman, Kenny Cameron

“Following an approach from Wigan Athletic FC late yesterday afternoon and following discussions with the management team, the board of Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC agreed to allow Billy Mckay leave to travel to DW Stadium for discussion of personal terms with a view to an immediate transfer.”

“Billy has never hidden his ambition to compete at the highest possible level and has always conducted himself in a professional manner in this regard.”

“We are grateful to Wigan Athletic FC for the courtesy shown in speaking to us before opening their discussions with the player.”

“We are forever mindful of the risk of losing players during any transfer window and, as always, have contingency plans in place should agreement on personal terms be reached with Billy.”

If Billy makes the difference between Wgan staying in the Championship or dropping to Division 1, then he will be worth an awful lot more to them than £150,000.  Billy might make that point when discussing personal terms with them.

Here's my prediction.  Billy will make no difference to Wigan's attempt to avoid relegation.  They will go down.

I live a dozen or so miles from Wycombe Wanderers ground, although I've seen them only a couple of times over the years.  They are currently top of EL2.  They will go up.

I'll go and see them when they play Wigan next season, and maybe wave my ICT scarf at Billy!

Good to hear we have contingency plans in place.

Gavin Reilly and Rory Loy are the obvious (out of contract in the summer) candidates from the lower leagues...

Alan Gow is the obvious (unattached) candidate who Yogi has signed before...
