See what you mean but that's not quite the same. The colour is bang on but it was all that blue and the outline much more bubble-like.

And it went "Tonky tonky tonnnky tonk....Tonky tonky tonnnky tonk....Tonky tonky tonnnky tonky tonky tonky tonk....tonnnky tonnnky tonnnk....

Great photo, Ford Zepher KST 95 registered in 1956 would have been sliding in the snow unless the boot was full, Ford Popular behind, not sure the one with the cardboard on the grill (so the engine would warm up quicker) then Ford Thams van and  a newer black Ford Popular across the road where Foxes tables are now

That's such an atmospheric photo! Funny also how it seems to suit black and white as opposed to colour, as a lot of older photos do. It's probably just a trick of psychology since most visual images of earlier days are in black and white and that's what we therefore expect. For instance when you see colour images of WW1 and WW2, they sometimes don't "feel right". I am also trying to imagine what it would be like to watch an episode of, for instance, Sgt Bilko or Dr Kildare in colour.

As it happens I drove up that very incline just a few minutes ago and immediately thought of this photo which I first saw last night. There have been quite a few changes over the years! I notice that Castle Tolmie has already been demolished and Bridge St appears to be going the same way which I think may date the photo to vey late 50s? That would also be consistent with IBM's date for the car.

Personally speaking I am more interested to learn which town this photo shows?

IBM, I have just received a fantastic calendar from my insurance broker depicting old North American cars of yesteryear, Super photographs,. Would you like me to send you one ? If so please contact me by p.m.

IHE

My ma and dad had friends in Dingwall where they had an upper flat overlooking the main street so we visited their home on the odd occasion. But that was in my early teens and on these seldom occasions their teenage son, Derek, and I went downstairs and out into the back garden and amused ourselves in ways which never led to the National Hotel.

Apart from that I don't recall even being remotely interested in the town and usually left it continually thinking that it had  only one street. So I'm more than mildly surprised to see that the town must have had have some very nice and substantial buildings in the past. But now I do wonder whether my interest would have increased had I ever entered the National which looks grand and no doubt a unique place, even if my education would have progressed after each visit !.......

Hi,

Just found your Forum the other day and couldn't resist joining.

This piccie was taken on the 29th May 1979.

(I went into my neg. album and scanned another print...hopefully it'll be a bit sharper to help identify the other 100+ cars.)

Second Row

Welcome.

That's some picture!  Looking at the date of 29th May 1979 it  got my blood flowing because I remembered that that was the date on which I bought my first business in Canada. I then stayed with it until exactly 29 years later, to the day, happier than I ever had been in the restricted  office environment that I had become accustomed to both in Scotland and also here in Canada. Sure, if you can't handle it and are not prepared to work hard to master all the techniques required to allow the business to prosper, and thereafter continue to work very hard, you will likely not last long and you will likely just give up.

However, by staying you will  find out that with no collar and tie to choke you and no boss to listen to and restrict you then  what you gain is directly related to your own  actions, ideas  and efforts and this is very satisfying and rewarding. Or, as Frank Sinatra once warbled, "I did it my wayyy!":clapping:

Welcome to the forum producing a much clearer copy of the photo than the one IHE produced (stolen from somewhere)  I was right with the ones before ( From the Ford Transit heading in the old Eastgate, Renault 9, Datsun, Morris 1800, Morris Marina van, Rover 2000, Daf 66 (I think), Morris Marina & Austin Maxi heading east.)  From the Land Rover in the car park, Austin 1100, Vauxhall Victor (I think), Sunbeam Talbot, the one to the right of the bus shelter looks like a Ford Taunus, Mk 3 Cortina, Morris Marina & Hillman Avenger.  Others behind are Mk2 Cortina estate, Sunbeam Alpine, Renault 9, VW Golf Mk1, On right white Renault 4 with Austin Alegro behind and black one top right is a Fiat 124.  In the middle there are Triumph Tolledo, Vauxhall Viva & Cavalier and Ford Granada's.  The D series Ford van looks like Halley but don't recall them.

The important one that I missed before is parked along Eastgate at the junction of Hamilton Street is the Bedford TK570 British Telecom jointers van like I had at that time.  The back doors are closed so that would indicate the jointer was working along the street or in the back with the kettle on .  If I was a really boring old fart I would have kept my work diaries and could have checked if it was me

If you have any other old local photos it would be good to see them on here.

Must be from an paper out of your loft IHE no chance of CB spotting Betty Munro  The cars Morris Marina, Hillman Avenger & Volvo 245 estate.  The lorry is a Volvo F86 which became very popular and led to the demise of the British truck industry.  I think the van is a Austin JU250, the photo was taken when the old magic roundabout was in place in the town.
