Scottish Cup 2016 - our defence of the trophy!

Incredibly, this technically starts tomorrow!
We don't enter until the 4th Round (which is now in 'back' in its traditional January slot), but the draw for the opening stages is being held tomorrow at Hampden. Davie Moyes drawing out teams he'll never have heard of!

Interestingly, no 'first time' winner has retained the trophy since the 1870s.

To my knowledge, this seasons competition will have the most ever clubs with 92. And with 2 preliminary rounds scheduled, there are effectively 10 rounds of competition - again a record.
In the old North of Scotland Qualifying Cup, if I remember, the 16 Highland League teams had to win two games to reach the semi-finals, and qualification to the Scottish Cup.
Then (the Scottish Cup) had 4 rounds before the quarter-finals...so a total of 9 matches to win the whole thing! (sometimes even a bye in Round 1 was a possibility).

But this season's marathon means that when we enter, 5 of the 10 rounds will already have been played, and 60 of the 92 clubs will have been eliminated!

The 2 preliminary rounds are drawn tomorrow with the Scottish Amateur Cup winners involved for the first time - apparently a team called Harestanes from Kirkintilloch who play on a public park!

Think it'll be hard to retain it this year when you consider we'll probably be challenging for European and League silverware as well.

Something'll have to give. Be nice to let someone else have a go at winning it anyway.

I'd be keen to mount a serious League Cup campaign - if we won that we would (for a short time minimum) hold both domestic cups. Other than the OF I dont know or cant think of another club in recent times to hold both trophies simultaneously. I'm sure though someone will know who the last team was and when?

Kelty, auchinleck, vale of leithen, Lothian thistle, and cove to qualify as a guess

yeah pretty much all bankers apart from Lothian who are weakened ( ) while there's been a lot of talk about Harestanes being strong and Girvan having got a bit of cash....

Bumping this, as it's all starting on Saturday!
Golspie don't start their North Caledonian League season until September, whereas, Cove have had 5 wins from 5 in their season so far - they could win this by 8 or 9!

Twenty five teams have won the Scottish Cup. Of those sixteen have won it more than once and of those only five have had back to back wins. Three teams - Queens Park (winners of first ever trophy), Rangers and Vale of Leven have won three years in a row. Defence of this would be something of an achievement.

As expected, Cove cruised past Golspie. Was slightly disappointed that Harestanes lost comfortably to Girvan, but as is often the case at amateur level, they had player availability problems. (best man duties, couldn't get off work, forgot there was a game etc...)

The final Preliminary round draw:

Civil Service Strollers  v  Kelty Hearts
Hermes  v  Auchinleck Talbot
Wigtown & Bladnoch  v  Hawick Royal Albert
Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale  v  Girvan
Cove Rangers  v  St. Cuthbert Wanderers

Mantis--how do you know what you know about these teams------your post of 11 July?

Mainly that I'm on the committee at Whitehill and we took Lothian's manager and their 4 best players.

the other bits are just hearsay.

Bit of a hike for Whitehill....

What comes around goes around!

2010 In Wick drew Whitehill away and got as far as Perth (220 miles "doon ee rodd") before they were told that the game was off. However this tie at Whitehill was small change compared with the two previous seasons.

In 2008 it was a 700 mile round trip to play St Cuthbert Wanderers in Kirkcudbright which reduced to "just" 600 in 2009 to meet Girvan. So the 500 or so to Whitehill when the game finally went ahead was only a stroll in the park. But by now they had travelled 2200 miles to fulfil just three cup ties.

Then in 2011 they drew Coldstream from the banks of the Tweed on the English border... but fortunately for Wick this was at HOME. Wick were obviously keen to avoid a replay here so they made very sure .....by winning 9-1!

In the game in 2010 Whitehill (having won away at Lossiemouth for the second time in 3 years) were cruising at 4-1 before two late Wick goals had them hanging on at 4-3 with the prospect of a replay, before going out 3-1 away at Montrose in rd 3.
