Euro 2016 Finals

Recommended Posts

Wales have announced there initial 29 man training squad for their pre-Euro 2016 training camp and OFW is in the group. No Bale as he has been left out to allow him to recover with Real. Danny Ward (ex-Aberdeen) is also included but he has just suffered an injury in training at Liverpool so there is a very good chance OFW will be at the Finals. How does the compensation work when players appear at major finals - do they actually have to play. If I recall we got money when Marius Niculae appeared in Euro 2008.

The full Wales squad is:

Goalkeepers: Wayne Hennessey, Danny Ward, Owain Fon Williams.

Defenders: Ashley Williams, James Chester, Ben Davies, James Collins, Chris Gunter, Adam Matthews, Neil Taylor, Adam Henley, Paul Dummett, Ashley Richards.

Midfielders: Joe Ledley, Joe Allen, David Vaughan, Emyr Huws, Jonathan Williams, David Edwards, George Williams, Aaron Ramsey, Andy King.

Attackers: David Cotterill, Hal Robson-Kanu, Tom Lawrence, Simon Church, Sam Vokes, Wes Burns, Tom Bradshaw.

Also are there are any other players with Inverness Caley Thistle connections going to be appearing at the Euros or even playing or have played in Scotland? Two others in the Wales training squad are Danny Ward (ex-Aberdeen loan from Liverpool) and Simon Church (MK Dons loan to Aberdeen).

Just be in the squad, I believe.  But he would also have to be contracted to ICT at the time of the tournament, and I don't think OFW is unless he signs an extension between now and then.

Yeh - another reason for the club to get his new offer sorted out

I see that the England Euro 2016 squad has 'allegedly' been posted by the FA on-line by error prior to Hodgson's announcement - if true then this is the squad.

Personally I think it is a hoax - if not then Hodgson has lost the plot and somebody at the FA can't spell:

If OFW is in the final squad as a free agent then there is no fee due but if he is contracted to a club that club get a substantial five figure fee. I would imagine that his agent will be holding out for a percentage of that in return for signing a contract before the tournament.

That way each of the parties get something rather than both getting nothing.

Currently France are the 3-1 favourites followed by Germany at 7-2.

My money would be on France. I can't believe it is 18 years since WC98 and our last goal scored at a major finals tournament by Craig Burley at Parc Lescure in Bourdeaux.

My outside punt would be Austria. Does anybody fancy a team out with the usual suspects?

Yeh - the courier article today stated £3,570 per day over a period that starts two weeks before the tournament to the day after the team's last game. A minimum of £89,250. Hoping therefore we get him signed up and Wales make the final :wink::wink::wink:

A number of the provisional squads have now been announced and are listed at:

http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/euro-2016-squads-confirmed-provisional-7986775

The Irish 35-man provisional squad includes Jonny Hayes. The scarcity of SPFL names in the squads unfortunately gives an accurate reflection on the standard of foreign players in our top flight at the moment although there are a few below in the Irish squad who have played in Scotland. I think after OWF (Wales) Mikael Lustig of Celtic who has been listed in the 22-man Swedish squad is the only other player from the SPFL listed in a squad to date. Maybe one or two more might appear when the NI squad is announced but not expecting many more from the other European squads.

Goalkeepers: Shay Given (Stoke), Darren Randolph (West Ham), David Forde (Millwall), Keiren Westwood (Sheffield Wednesday).

Defenders: Seamus Coleman (Everton), Cyrus Christie (Derby), Paul McShane (Reading), Ciaran Clark (Aston Villa), Richard Keogh (Derby), John O'Shea (Sunderland), Alex Pearce (Bristol City), Shane Duffy (Blackburn), Marc Wilson (Stoke), Stephen Ward (Burnley).

Midfielders: Aiden McGeady (Everton), James McClean (West Brom), Glenn Whelan (Stoke), James McCarthy (Everton), Jeff Hendrick (Derby), David Meyler (Hull), Stephen Quinn (Reading), Darron Gibson (Everton), Harry Arter (Bournemouth), Wes Hoolahan (Norwich), Eunan O'Kane (Bournemouth), Anthony Pilkington (Cardiff), Robbie Brady (Norwich), Jonathan Walters (Stoke), Jonathan Hayes (Aberdeen), Callum O'Dowda (Oxford).

Forwards: Robbie Keane (LA Galaxy), Shane Long (Southampton), David McGoldrick (Ipswich), Kevin Doyle (Colorado Rapids), Daryl Murphy (Ipswich).

As expected, Billy Mckay has missed out on a place in the NI squad.

If you rewind the clock a couple of years, it's staggering to think that he's now behind the likes of Josh Magennis (in squad) and Liam Boyce (very narrowly missed out) in the pecking order.  Perhap's he'll take a moment to reflect that if he'd stayed at ICT, he would very likely be fulfilling a once in a lifetime opportunity to play international football in a major tournament.  And that maybe a move back to us might help resurrrect his career!

I see, though, that Boyce made it into the NI squad in the Panini sticker album, which I suppose is a bit of an achievement in itself.

Well that was a decent start to the tournament and well done Romania for giving it a go.  France are favourites this year but i'm struggling to see why really, yes they are a good team and they are at home but i'm not convinced they have what it takes to win it all.  That said I have Giroud on at 14/1 to become top scorer, nice goal tonight to start it off and my initial thinking was a pumping of Albania to come will notch up the goals before they go out in the semi's.

Now we are into the first tournament with 24 teams does anyone else think it dilutes the quality or are you happy to see the other sides given a go? Maybe a 32 team tournament would see us and Gibraltar given a go.......

Wayne Hennessey injured for the Slovakia game, but looks like Danny Ward formerly of Aberdeen is starting before OFW. Could we see a substitute appearance

Hopefully Ward gets a red card, OFW comes on to save the penalty and then makes some more amazing saves to secure the win and become a hero, we then accept a £2m offer for him on Monday and promptly re-sign Dean Brill.

Well done Wales and well done the Welsh fans.

As an Englishman, I am yet again hugely embarrassed by the behaviour of a significant number of imbeciles who claim to be English "fans".  They are not fans but mindless idiots who shame their country and shame their team.  I really feel for the players who can't but be affected by what is going on off the field.  Such behaviour is a disgrace at any time, but this year, the French police are fully occupied in trying to keep everyone safe from the terrorist threats following earlier ISIS outrages.  They should not have to be dealing with the scum of one of their closest neighbours and allies.  If these idiots want to fight then perhaps the authorities should round them all up, drop them off somewhere in Syria and take back some deserving refugees in their place.

Hopefully the young English team will restore a little bit of English pride later tonight, but to be honest, the sight of those odious thugs has largely drained me of the anticipation I had for watching England in this tournament.

It's just struck me that the purpose of the first 2 weeks and 36 matches of the tournament is to eliminate a mere 8 of the 24 teams, taking it down to 16 which is what the Euros usually start off with!  Not that I'm complaining, plenty of football to watch while there's no ICT.
