European Push!

Surely the biggest argument against the League split is that it stops any teams in the lower half of the table making a late bid for Europe. With Hibs on 56 points and us on 52, it could have been a really exciting end to the season (and a whole lot more interesting than the us vs. Motherwell vs. Aberdeen for sixth battle).

I don't think it is that simple... would we have won all our games if we had to play Rangers, Celtic, Aberdeen, Hearts, and Hibs in the last five games? Our points tally is higher because we are in the bottom six... it does not necessarily mean we would have achieved the same tally had there been no split.

But we've played Motherwell, a team who until the last day, were just as good as some of the teams fighting for the top 6. Dundee United with their highly paid and supposedly better players from the better footballing city and also Livi who really should have been fighting for their lives. Not exactly easy games by any means.

If there was no split, who knows who we would have played. The point is that we'll never know if we could have made Europe, because our challenge ended three fixtures ago. Where's the romance in that?

All immaterial because after Hearts result against the Tattie Munchers today they should surely beat the Seagulls on Wednesday to clinch second spot. So the Huns will finish second and Gretna will take the second UEFA Cup slot.
