It's not how we imagined it

Well, it's the scenario that no Caley Jags fan wanted. If we could have chosen one team to stroke off our last game of the season title deciding clash, Hamilton Accies would probably be the peoples choice. It doesn't bother me that we have had previous with Accies over the years regarding relegation, it's the fact that they are the form team in the league on three wins on the bounce and if you remove their 21 point deduction, they would be sitting third in the table on merit. Add in the factor that Accies need at least one point, dependant on another result, to have any hope of avoiding the relegation play-off but a better option for Accies is going for all three points. We are also well aware that they have top strikers in Oli Shaw and Kevin O'Hara and they are the third top scorers in the league with 53 goals behind us and Queen of the South. The other major stumbling block is our own form. We are hell bent on drawing our way to the title with four draws over the last six which has included playing teams in the relegation zone. Whilst we are unbeaten in the League over 17 games we could have been out of site long before now. Instead of that we have turned wins into draws and are paying the price for our failure to kill games off when well on top. That price is no finger nails left and confidence draining away from the park to the stands. Here's a thought to cheer us up. Our last defeat was 18 games ago when we lost 2-1 at Montrose. Apart from all that we have nothing to worry about!

Of the three previous meetings this season: We were blown away 3-1 at NDP on a miserable day during Storm Amy in October: Accies blew Inverness away with Amy spoiling our day. Goals from O'Hara, McDonald and Shaw were enough to win the three points and send Accies to the top of the table. Bavidge scored our counter but we dropped to third with Stenhousemuir second. We exacted revenge back in the Highlands before Xmas with a 4-0 thrashing of Accies. It was a convincing win for the table toppers with goals from Mitchell Robertson, Chanka Zimba, his 13th of the season, substitutes Alfie Bavidge and Billy Mckay. Boom! In the last meeting away at Broadwood an Alfie Bavidge goal separated the sides in a scrappy affair. At that stage, the Caley Jags moved 5 points ahead after beating Accies 1-0 thanks to Alfie Bavidge's first half header.

This was our squad that struggled on the artificial surface at Bayview. It took a brilliant strike from Billy Mckay to rescue a point in the 89th minute after Michael McKenna had given the Fifer's the lead shortly after the interval. That was goal No 131 for Billy and could prove to be his most crucial strike yet.

Liam Sole has been struggling with a calf injury and has missed out recently. We badly need his pace up front in an attacking manner.

Accies are on a three game winning streak as they try to escape the relegation zone. To be honest it would be an unbelievable achievement should they escape after a 21 point deduction for gross mismanagement. We all know how that feels.

Accies drew 2-2 at Cove before losing the next two at home to Kelty (1-2) and a 3-0 loss at Stenhousemuir. They have since made a sprint for the finishing line beating Alloa 1-0, Montrose 0-2 and last time out beating Peterhead 3-1. Those results have taken them close to safety and they sit one point below East Fife and three points below Cove Rangers but with a much better GD than both. All to play for at the bottom but it depends on the result at Cove v East Fife to determine their destiny combined with a result at Inverness other than a defeat.

Oli Shaw has scored three times over the last six games. He is the leading scorer in League1 with 19 goals. In comparison our best League scorers this season is Chanka Zimba with 11 and Alfie Bavidge with 10.

Steven Bradley will need rehab after picking up an injury at Montrose.

It will be some achievement should Accies avoid relegation, but to do that they need to not lose which is not in our best interest.

Is It Coming Home?

With the prospect of a title winning celebration happening this weekend, a big crowd is expected at Bayview Stadium, Methil. It's certainly not a formality by any means, however, there is a distinct possibility that something could happen and that will swell the crowd. East Fife have had to review their seating allocation to try and accommodate this surge in ticket sales and we are still waiting for further developments regarding ticket sales as of Monday at 21:00. It did open but sold out quickly and we now await more seating to be released by East Fife. A win for the Caley Jags will secure the title outright regardless of what Stenhousemuir do against Alloa Athletic. A draw might be enough but that depends on Stenhousemuir losing or at worst, drawing, something that is not a common occurrence at Ochilview this season. A defeat for both clubs hands Inverness the title and promotion. Defeat at Bayview takes it to the final day against Accies as long as Stenny get the win, and a draw at Stenny would probably suffice for us given our superior goal difference.

It's all ifs and buts at the moment.

It's only this season that our paths have crossed again after a 27 year hiatus in League games. We did have a League cup win over them in 2020 when Shane Sutherland scored the only goal of the game. We have been pretty dominant this season so far scoring nine goals and conceding one in the first meeting this season in a 4-1 win in the Highlands. Our overall Head 2 Head meetings with East Fife is good with 10 wins, two defeats and two draws in the 14 fixtures played since we first locked horns in a Scottish Cup tie in 1996. That one ended in a 1-1 draw: A team of volunteers cleared a 2 inch covering of snow to allow this game to go ahead. The first chance fell after 5 minutes to East Fife's Trinidadian Arnold Dwarika but Jim Calder saved his 25 yard drive. Two minutes later Calder touched a Robert Scott shot round the post. Five minutes later lain Stewart had the home fans roaring when he opened the scoring - a long pass from Graeme Bennett found Stewart with a little space on the right edge of the area and he chipped (surprise surprise) the ball over Lindsay Hamilton. It was nearly two in 15 minutes but Richard Hastings 30 yard free kick flew narrowly past the post. The home side had other first half chances through Stewart and Hercher and East Fife came close in 41 minutes when Calder touched away a David Beaton free kick. The home side continued to impress in the second half and had excellent chances through Teasdale and Hercher. In 78 minutes East Fife drew level - Alex Hamill slipped the ball to Dwarika on the right and without breaking stride he curled the ball into the top right-hand corner of the net from 25 yards. Caley Thistle fought back but could not find the net - their best effort was 6 minutes from time when a well timed tackle from John McStay foiled Alan Hercher. The home side were disappointed not to have held on to their lead and East Fife headed south greatly relieved.

The replay was also drawn 1-1 thanks to an injury time equaliser from Alan Hercher who cancelled out Scott's opener on 75m. A tremendous victory for Caledonian Thistle but only after an injury time equaliser in normal time and the drama of penalty kicks.
The match was played at a furious pace on a wet and windy evening and several hundred Inverness fans witnessed an historic victory. East Fife had the better of the first half as the visitors battled into the gales - the best chances for the home side fell to Mark Donaghy who hit it over the bar in 8 minutes and to player/manager Steve Archibald who did the same from 6 yards in 24 minutes. Caley Thistle dominated the penalty shoot out with the home players clearly very nervous. Iain Stewart, Mike Noble and Daisy Ross all scored for the visitors while East Fifes Allan hit it over the bar, Jim Calder saved from Hope and McStay scored.
At 3-1 Colin Mitchells penalty was saved by Hamilton but the match was over when Hutcheon hit the post. A superb night for Caley Thistle and a place in the last 16 of the Cup.

Crucial Kelty Crunch Game

After a convincing 2-0 win at Peterhead in midweek, the Caley Jags head into the final three games of the season with a one point advantage over a relentless Stenhousemuir. A stunning Alfie Stewart free kick and an equally impressive team goal put into the net by Chanka Zimba saw us leap frog the Warriors with no room for error over the final 270 minutes. Kelty come North on the back of a great result against Montrose which has seen them narrow the gap to safety and they now sit five points adrift of Cove Rangers and two behind Hamilton Accies. With Kelty in as much need of points as us but for different reasons, then this could be a tough game all round but one we are well capable of dealing with after showing more conviction in the second half at Balmoor.

We were in the Pink at Balmoor on Tuesday night and warmed to the task with an assured performance to put promotion back in our own grasp, but there's no wiggle room with Stenny breathing down our necks. Keep it under your hat, but Alfie Stewart is turning out to be a great asset. He doesn't do tap-ins. Every one of his goals this season have been belters.

Not turning draws into wins has been a major stumbling block this season in our drive for promotion. We took the bull by the horns against Peterhead and took the game to them, especially in the second half where nobody would have complained had we scored half a dozen.

Here's a sobering thought. We have never beaten Kelty at home in the three games we have played in the Highlands with one defeat and two draws.

The diamond shaped midfield worked well at Peterhead, especially in the second half where we went for the jugular.

Chanka Zimba notched his 19th goal of the season at Peterhead and Alfie's stunner was his eighth.

The Kelty recovery continued last Saturday with a tremendous 3-1 win at home to Montrose. An Arnott penalty and a brace from Cooper won the points at New Central Park. That followed on from an excellent 2-1 win away to Accies and an equally impressive home draw with Queen of the South who ended that game with ten men.

It's not been the best of seasons for the Maroons since we beat them 3-0 in the season opener back on the 2nd of August. Seems like a lifetime away now. However with the return of Cunningham, Kelty have a glimmer of hope in avoiding automatic relegation and that looked a forlorn hope a month ago.

No Room for Error

It's almost last chance saloon at the last chance saloon club as we face Peterhead at Balmoor Stadium on Tuesday night with the game kicking off at 19:45. It will also be screened on BBC ALBA for those not able to attend. A cringeworthy penalty decision against Stenhousemuir on Sunday meant that we remain two points behind the Warriors after the 1-1 draw which saw the three points wrenched from our grasp by an incompetent referee, who up to that point, within reason, had been doing okish albeit a bit pernickety. We play this catch-up game and thereafter all teams will have three games left to decide where the title goes, and likewise relegation for those at the bottom end. As it stands it's still in our own hands but anything other than a win removes that option and puts Stenhousemuir in the driving seat.

That was our starting XI at Stenhousemuir which saw a few changes from the KDM Final against Raith Rovers. A tough game at Ochilview might have taken it's toll on some but Chanka Zimba was suspended so expect him to feature in this one. Three draws in our last three games is not the form of Champions.

We started this run with a 3-1 home win over Montrose. With Stenny drawing and Alloa losing in midweek, we had a smidgeon of breathing space going into the home game against Cove but that was taken away by a goalkeeper. Balint Demus headed in an equaliser because we failed to put the game to bed when on top. A common theme throughout the season and one which Stenhousemuir took full advantage of by snatching a last minute winner. We bounced back in midweek with a good 3-1 home win over Peterhead with as bizarre an 'offside' goal as you will see gifting the Head their consolation. Zimba x2 & Alonge were our scorers in that one, three going on six. Zimba was Hero to Zero at Alloa scoring the equaliser before being sent off ten minutes later with the game ending at 1-1 and our last League1 game was a poor 1-1 draw under the lights v QotS where Ross Millen followed up on his saved penalty to bundle home and earn us a point. Onto the the KDM final and the only bright spark for us was Alfie Stewart's superb free kick. Alas we gave our opponents too much respect and too many opportunities to take the ball from us and for that we suffered badly. We suffered even more at Ochilview having led for around 70mins when Calum MacLeod's goal was wiped out with one blow of the refs whistle in a 1-1 draw. Meh!

Heads team that were maybe surprisingly beaten on Saturday by East Fife. They went down 2-1 at Methil with Craig McGuffie getting their goal.

First of the last six was a an excellent 3-1 win over Alloa, Shanks, McGuffie and an og sealing the points. A last minute goal for Stenny saw them leave Balmoor with a 1-0 win and that was followed by a 3-1 win for none other than the Caley Jags with Shanks getting their rather bizarre goal. Shanks again in a 1-1 draw at home to Montrose and his scoring run continued with a brace at Alloa before Saturdays defeat to the Fifers.

STENNY SIX-POINTER

If ever there was one, this is the proverbial six-pointer and a game that will go a long way to decide who gets automatic promotion to the Championship come five o'clock on the 2nd of May. If not entirely a must win game, it's definitely a must not lose encounter. We still have the postponed fixture against Peterhead away to contend with and at this stage of the season and with our campaign agonisingly unravelling in a tortuous manner, there are no guarantees that three points at Balmoor is a given. Ahead of this game, it's still in our own hands, a defeat removes that option.

Danny Devine missed the KDM Final through injury and although Chanka Zimba played in it, was on the park, he is suspended for this crucial League1 clash. A number of our players never turned up for the Final, some say they haven't arrived yet, but here's hoping they get that no show out of their system pretty quick. It's not up to me, but surely we need more grit and determination in midfield and we don't get that from Chalmers. What does Calum MacLeod and Ben Brannan need to do to get a game? Does Liam Sole not realise he needs to get his finger out and deliver the goods he often promises? Alfie Bavidge is a striker. Play him as one. Time to play our best XI from the start. If that means getting more out of David Wotherspoon then so be it. Is it time to roll back the years and get Billy Mckay on the park as well, although he was not in the squad at Firhill? Plenty of questions for Scott Kellacher to ponder, let's hope he has all the answers because defeat here could signal another season in the doldrums.

Is our squad too big for League1 and is that why we have this selection rotation? With 22 or 23 to pick from that brings it's own headaches. If a club only has say 15 quality players then barring injuries and suspensions, there's your players for a more settled and consistent first choice. To be honest, I don't envy Kellacher's job, however it's time for the top XI to start at Ochilview.

Stenhousemuir's relentless drive for promotion continued last Saturday with a confident 3-0 win over Hamilton Accies with goals from Dunfermline's on loan Ritchie-Hosler, Ross Taylor and Greg Buchanan.

They have been churning out results all season and have taken 14 points from their last six League1 fixtures, a run that has taken them two points clear of the Caley Jags who are hell bent on drawing their way into the Championship with their over cautious approach. It all started with a 1-0 win at Accies thanks to Olly Whyte's goal on the hour. A 1-1 draw followed at QotS where Nicky Jamieson's first half goal was cancelled out on the hour by Guthrie. Ross Taylor was the match winner at Peterhead with a last minute strike and he scored the opener in the next game against Kelty Hearts with Matty Aitken adding a late second in a 2-0 win. A surprising 2-2 draw with a battling East Fife after goals from Buchanan and Anderson had them cruising for all three points. The Fifers turned it round with two goals in a minute, the first from Nathan Austin baby. Last time out they scored an emphatic 3-0 win over Accies with Ritchie-Hosler, Ross Taylor and Greg Buchanan wrapping up the points which put them two ahead of the Caley Jags who will have a catch-up game to come against Peterhead next Tuesday.

🏆 Gary Naysmith has been named Glen’s League 1 Manager of the Month for March 2026. Can't argue with that given the unbeaten run the Warriors are on.

• Ross Taylor had to come off injured against Accies or was that just a precaution. He has an eye for a goal out of nothing.

• Ritchie-Hosler on loan from Dunfermline has given Stenny an extra dimension.

• Olly Whyte and Matty Aitken are big threats in front of goal.

🏆 KDM TROPHY FINAL 🏆

It's been a long slog but we have battled our way through to the final of the KDM Trophy where we will face Raith Rovers at the neutral venue of Firhill in Glasgow. It's been quite a journey since we played our first Challenge Cup game at Elgin back on the 12th of August last year. Eight months and another ten games later we will face-off against Championship side Raith Rovers in the final. It's been some journey and we are unbeaten up to the final having won all ten matches so far scoring a total of 41 goals and conceding 8, eliminating two Championship sides in Partick Thistle and Ayr United, won a penalty shoot-out, had one game postponed, scored a club record nine goals in a mismatch against Dumbarton, beaten League1 rivals Stenhousemuir and had Alfie Bavidge knocking in four in one game. Who ever said it was a Mickey Mouse Cup? It certainly caught the eye more once the knock-out stages started with the introduction of the Championship sides and we are now on our way to our sixth final. We lost our first in a dramatic penalty kick defeat to Alloa Athletic back in season 99/2000. In 03/04 we beat Airdrie 2-0 and in 09/10 we let a two goal lead slip against Dundee to lose out in an entertaining five goal final. We returned to the final in 17/18 to defeat Dumbarton 1-0 with a late Carl Tremarco goal when extra time looked likely and the 19/20 final was shelved due to the covid crisis where we were to play Sunday's opponents Raith Rovers. The trophy was shared then, so this weekend we can play for the right to get our hands on the trophy legitimately.

This will be Raith Rovers fifth appearance in the final having won it three times. They have reached the final in four of the last six seasons it has been contested, the tournament being cancelled in season 2020/21. Their last two KDM fixtures to get to the final saw them eliminate Championship sides Queens Park and Airdrie in penalty kick shoot-outs.

💰 There's £150,000 up for grabs if you win and a not too shabby £100,000 for the runners-up. 💰

Chanka Zimba is suspended, but it transpires that his suspension is for League games only, therefore he will be eligible to play on Sunday but will miss the League game at Stenhousemuir. However, he was on International duty for Zambia against Argentina on April 1st. Lionel Messi shared the same pitch with Chanka for half an hour in Buenos Aires. Trust me, it was a real thing, not AI and not an April Fool. Well done to Chanka for getting recognition after a good season at the Caley Jags. A feat that will never ever be replicated. Memories made for life!

Back home, Liam Sole is free from suspension and will be available should he now be injury free. Danny Devine missed out last week through injury and another two or three were possibly carrying knocks.

We will also need to keep an eye on the game at Ochilview with Stenhousemuir hosting Hamilton Accies as the run in for the League1 title gets serious.

We will need all hands to the pumps if we are to lift the trophy. Chanka Zimba appears to be free to play on Sunday but will miss the crunch title match at Stenhousemuir. Hopefully Liam Sole and Danny Devine will be fit and maybe we can have our best right back this season in Calum MacLeod starting. It's no use sitting in for ninety minutes against Raith Rovers and then wondering what if! We need to be clinical and pacey, not sloppy and pedestrian. In our favour, we are at our best when we are underdogs!!!

Raith Rovers last squad out in a comfortable 3-0 win over Ayr United who have since sacked Scott Brown. Surely it's not that embarrassing losing to Rovers A brace from Innes Cameron and one from Richard Chin sealed Broon's fate. Rovers have had a disappointing season by their own high standards and sit just outside the top four. Dougie Imrie is now the boss having taken over from Barry Robson in November.

Rovers have claimed the trophy three times in four attempts. In season 2013/14 they beat Rangers by a solitary goal in the Ramsden Cup. Former Caley Jag John Baird scored the winner at Easter Road in front of almost 20,000. Having shared the Tunnocks Caramel Wafer Trophy in 2019/20 with the Caley Jags; one for you and one for me, they then won it two seasons later when they beat Queen of the South 3-1 at the Excelsior Stadium with two headed goals from Matej Poplatnik and a strike from Ethan Ross. It was then known as the SPFL Trust Trophy. In Season 2022/23 they lost out in the final 1-0 to Hamilton Accies when it was still the SPFL Trust Trophy, with Reghan Tumilty the scorer. That brings us up to date where they play the Caley Jags at Firhill on Sunday 5th April.

Five Games left to find our best XI

With our lead down to a solitary point and just six League1 games left we have a home fixture against Queen of the South on Friday evening under the lights at 7:45pm. It's also on the telly if you can't get down to the stadium so tune in to BBC Alba and have your Gaelic phrasebook handy. Last time we aired with Queens we ran away with the points in a resounding 4-0 win back in November. Zimba and Sole scored on that occasion but they are both on the naughty step and will not be allowed out to play this time. Points are now getting hard to find as every team is fighting for their lives at both ends of the table with Stenhousemuir the form team with the impetus at the moment.

Is our rotation system affecting our run for promotion? Is the size of our squad a hinderance or a bonus? Many fans have voiced their opinion on this as some are left baffled by the decision to change a winning side on numerous occasions. We all understand that injuries will affect who is selected, but it's often for no apparent obvious reason the tinkering occurs. Suspensions will certainly alter our starting XI this week and Danny Devine came off in the second half at Alloa and is a major doubt with Mitchell Robertson ready to step in.

Fixtures against Queen of the South this season have yielded seven points so far with Queens only taking one to date. A 2-0 win for the Caley Jags in the first encounter at Palmerston back in September followed by a runaway 4-0 televised home fixture in November. A point apiece at Palmerston in a 2-2 draw at the end of January takes us up to the present with points in the promotion race getting harder to come by.

Stenhousemuir were the only League1 team to get maximum points last weekend and they face East Fife at Methil on Saturday afternoon just one point behind. Possibly the last chance for Alloa to keep in touch as they are at home to Peterhead and sit ten points adrift of top place.

With the introduction of a £2 maximum fare on bus services in the Highlands this week, the fare on the Matchday Bus Service has been reduced from £2.70 to £2 from this week.

For Friday's game against Queen of the South, Bar 94 will open at 1730, with last orders at 1915 (the bar must be fully vacated by 1930). The bar reopens at full time, when we hope to be joined by some of the players.

Operated by Stagecoach, the bus will leave the Bus Station for the Stadium at 1900, returning from the Stadium to the Bus Station 10 minutes after the full time whistle.

The bus fare is £2 single (contactless payments or cash accepted), and Over 60 / Disabled and Under 22 Concession passes are valid, giving free travel on the service to passholders.

This was the guys we trusted to get the points at Recreation Park. Alas we had to battle for a point, literally, with Chanka Zimba scoring and also being red carded with over twenty minutes remaining. To ease his pain, he has been called up to the Zambian squad for an international fixture against Argentina in Buenos Aires on 31st March. It will coincide with his suspension. How thoughtful.

The last six started with a tough 1-1 draw against Stenny when we had Ben Brannan sent off with 20m left. (On the Tuesday after we beat Ayr Utd 1-2 to progress into the KDM Trophy Final). A disappointing no scoring draw at Kelty followed where we struggled to create enough clear chances and allowed the pack to close in again before a 3-1 home win over Montrose. With Stenny drawing and Alloa losing in midweek, we had a smidgeon of breathing space going into the home game against Cove but that was taken away by a goalkeeper. Balint Demus headed in an equaliser because we failed to put the game to bed when on top. A common theme throughout the season and one which Stenhousemuir took full advantage of by snatching a last minute winner. We bounced back in midweek with a good 3-1 home win over Peterhead with as bizarre an 'offside' goal as you will see gifting the Head their consolation. Zimba x2 & Alonge were our scorers in that one, three going on six. Zimba was Hero to Zero at Alloa scoring the equaliser before being sent off ten minutes later with the game ending at 1-1.

Zimba and Sole are suspended this weekend for a lack of discipline which could prove costly. That's a pity with Zimba scoring three in his last two games. Zimba and Alfie Bavidge both have ten League goals. Kellacher has the usual smokescreen ongoing that we have a few carrying knocks but is keeping that close to his chest for now so you will have to make your own starting XI up for yourself although Danny Devine is known to be struggling to make this one.

Queen of the South drew 2-2 with a battling East Fife on Saturday. Reece Lyon with both goals but the Fifer's battled hard for a point with Gaffney & Culbert scoring. That has no doubt scuppered automatic promotion but Queens are clinging on to the fourth promotion play-off spot ahead of Peterhead and Montrose.

Queens run started with three defeats in a row, kicking off with a valentine's day loss at home to Alloa 2-1. A Kai Kennedy brace was not enough to stop them losing 3-2 at Montrose followed by another home defeat to Peterhead by 2-0. A 1-1 draw with Stenny then the solitary win away to Accies by 3-1 and that takes them up to the 2-2 home draw with East Fife.

The Doonhamers are the second highest scorers in the League with 47 goals. Conceding 41 goals has been their downfall and that has them 13 points off the pace in fourth position, Reece Lyon has eight goals to his name in League1 with former Caley Jag Kai Kennedy bagging seven. Jack Stott and Matty Douglas are both on five.

Queens still have four or five players getting back to match fitness after injury. Jack Hannah, Jack Stott, Jordan Allan and Mikey Hewit are the main ones still nursing injuries.
