With just seven League1 games left this season we are off to face another form side on the fringe of the promotion race. Alloa Athletic were flying and looking like real contenders until they suffered two defeats in a row at Peterhead and Montrose, conceding eight goals in the process and that might just have knocked the stuffing out of them. However, they are still one of three teams that have reaped twelve points from their last six games, the others being Stenhousemuir and ourselves. Recreation Park has never been an easy place to extricate points from, but needs must and we should be looking to take all three with the Warriors likely to grind out another win over Kelty Hearts on Saturday. Inverness will be Soleless again on Saturday and next week as well.

We bounced back to top the table on our own in midweek against Peterhead with a fine performance as we caught up on the rest of the table on matchday 29 for ourselves and Peterhead.

• Last Six League1:

The first W was our BBC Alba game at Broadwood beating Accies (0-1). The next League game was a tough 1-1 draw with Stenny when we had Ben Brannan sent off with 20m left. (On the Tuesday after we beat Ayr Utd 1-2 to progress into the KDM Trophy Final). A disappointing no scoring draw at Kelty followed where we struggled to create enough clear chances and allowed the pack to close in again before a 3-1 home win over Montrose. With Stenny drawing and Alloa losing in midweek, we had a smidgeon of breathing space going into the home game against Cove but that was taken away by a goalkeeper. Balint Demus headed in an equaliser because we failed to put the game to bed when on top. A common theme throughout the season and one which Stenhousemuir took full advantage of by snatching a last minute winner. We bounced back in midweek with a good 3-1 home win over Peterhead with as bizarre an 'offside' goal as you will see gifting the Head their consolation. Zimba x2 & Alonge were our scorers in that one, three going on six. Liam Sole has missed the last couple of games apparently injured since coming on as a 73rd minute substitute against Montrose, however, he has since been handed an immediate two match ban. The punishment was meted out by the SFA after a notice of complaint about a head butt on Jamie Hislop near the end of the KDM Trophy semi-final. He will be suspended for the next two League1 games but ironically will be allowed to play in the KDM final against Raith Rovers should he be fit. Ross Millen was an unused sub last time out v Peterhead having missed a few games recently. Scott Kellacher playing the olde "we have a few carrying knocks" smokescreen.

Alloa were on a great run until they came unstuck at Balmoor and were pumped 3-1 by Peterhead. It got worse at the weekend in the late TV game where Montrose ran out winners in a nine goal thriller. However their good run prior to that never went unnoticed with Manager Andy Graham picking up the SPFL League1 Manager of the Month Award for February.

This run started with four wins on the trot stating away to QotS (1-2). Next up was 3-0 at home v Accies then another away win over East Fife 2-0 with the last win being 2-1 at home over Kelty Hearts. The curse of the MotM kicked in with a 3-1 reverse at Peterhead in a midweek encounter before the 5-4 loss at Montrose. But for a couple of late goals it was a thrashing although Callum Burnside can be pleased with his contribution of a hat-trick. He also notched a brace against Kelty and singles v East Fife and Accies. Luke Donnelly was also amongst the goals during the last six fixtures scoring three times.

Alloa have one of the better squads in League1 with a good mixture of experience and younger heads with no shortage of quality. Before the season started they were one of the tips to take the title and they will still believe they are capable of reaching the summit with seven games remaining. Certainly a play-off place will be a minimum target.

Time to Kick On

We play one of our postponed fixtures against Peterhead on Tuesday night 17th February with a 7:45pm kick-off. This is our catch up fixture as all teams will have played 29 games after Tuesday night with only seven League1 fixtures remaining thereafter. It's not been the most productive last fortnight as the Caley Jags crawl towards the finishing line having dropped four points against the bottom two sides. This has allowed Stenhousemuir to draw level on points at the top of the table and put the fans on edge after they ground out yet another result against a dominant Peterhead.

One positive from the weekend was Alfie Stewart's stunning strike to open the scoring and will go down as our 100th strike of the season. What a way to mark the occasion, as sweet a strike as you will see right here>>>

Our squad in the disappointing home draw with Cove Rangers, our third draw in the last four games. A searing 100th goal of the season for the Caley Jags from Alfie Stewart set us on the way to victory....or so we thought before Demus was left unchallenged in the 95th minute to grab a welcome point for Cove.

Why have the goals dried up at a crucial stage of the season when we really need to put teams to the sword? A bit more composure against Cove would have been more beneficial and given us a comfortable three points, but we spurned too many good chances to ease our way to victory. I doubt we will find Peterhead any easier to beat with Peterhead nine points better off than Cove despite Cove beating them 2-1 recently. Liam Sole was missing on Saturday???

Peterhead's squad that lost to Stenhousemuir at the weekend. A late goal that saw a four point swing at the top as unknown to them at the time of scoring, Cove's keeper would snatch an unlikely point at the Caledonian Stadium deep into time added on.

Their last six started with a 1-1 D at Kelty. A comfortable 3-1 win at home to East Fife was followed by an even better result at Palmerston as they beat Queen of the South 0-2. They lost the North East derby at Cove 2-1 but bounced back by thrashing title contenders Alloa 3-1 last midweek. A narrow defeat to a last minute Ross Taylor free kick saw The Warriors win at Balmoor to pull level at the top of the table with the Caley Jags.

Peterhead have taken 10 points from their last six games compared to the Caley Jags' 12 points.

Jack Newman is their No1 keeper and Flynn Duffy is still at Balmoor. Former Aberdeen players Peter Pawlett, Cammy Smith and Niall McGinn are all experienced campaigners with plenty to offer and Jason Brown is a leader on the park.

The second of three home games on the bounce has Cove Rangers visiting the Caledonian SarensPSG Stadium on Saturday with both sides looking to pick up maximum points for different reasons. Congratulation to our top scorer Alfie Bavidge who was named SPFL League1 Player of the Month for February with three crucial goals. Jordan Alonge also deservedly got himself into the SPFL Team of the Week. The Caley Jags are unbeaten in their last 13 games over 90 minutes in all competitions, the last defeat was 2-1 at Montrose on 27th of December. And how about a special mention for the men at the back from Ross Munro out with 16 clean sheets

Cove are battling for points at the wrong end of the table but pulled off a good win in the North East derby at home to Peterhead last Saturday. Peterhead then went on to thrash Alloa Athletic 3-1 on Tuesday night much to the delight of the top two in the table.

Cove started February with a decent 1-1 draw at home to QotS, Megginson the scorer. Defeat 2-1 at East Fife, Megginson again before a 3-1 midweek win over Montrose (O'Donnell x2 & McAllister) A 1-1 draw v Kelty (Masson), defeat at Ochilview by 1-0 and last time out 2-1 win over Peterhead (Yule & Maguire)

With East Fife in freefall, it looks like Cove will be spared the relegation play-offs. Ironically East Fife's only recent win was over Cove Rangers five games ago. However, every point is crucial as we all get down to the business end of the season and there are no easy games left for any side.

Mitch Megginson is always a danger with his experience, as is former Aberdeen striker Chris Maguire. On loan Adam Emslie has pace and needs to be kept quiet.

Keeper Robbie Mutch is in charge of the gloves at the moment since signing on at the start of this season and getting his chance in early September against the Caley Jags. Calum MacLeod beat him that day with Hungarian Bálint Demus on the bench.

We embark on a run of three home games on the trot starting with Montrose on Saturday followed by Cove next week then a midweek visit from Peterhead before a tough test at form side Alloa. Not quite the seven away fixtures we endured either side of New Year, but a welcome break nonetheless, and maybe just at the right time after a disappointing performance and result at Kelty last weekend. Stenhousemuir joined us at the top of the table after beating Accies 1-0 in midweek. No room for errors now as we enter matchday 28.

Montrose drew 1-1 with Kelty in midweek Euan Louden with the goal just on half time with Kelty drawing level through Lewis Moore twenty minutes from the end.

Six games ago Montrose drew 1-1 with Peterhead then 2-2 with Stenny. The solitary defeat was inflicted at Cove as Montrose went down 3-1. The win was a great result, 3-2 over QotS followed by a 1-1 draw at Accies. Last time out in midweek was the 1-1 draw with Kelty Hearts. That's 7 points over the last six games.

Jambos loanee Callum Sandilands is one to watch. Back for his second season at Links Park, Callum has bagged 8 goals this season from his attacking midfield position. He made 18 appearances for Montrose scoring three times last season and is making an even bigger impact this season.

Taylor Sutherland is next best goal getter with five to his name.

Montrose are having a decent season sitting just outside the promotion play-off positions. At times this season they have produced runs as good as any in the division but inconsistency has kept them on the fringes. That being said, we have never really found the Gable Endies an easy side to get the better of, instead we just seem to plod on doing things the Caley Jags way.

Polar opposites meet at New Central Park Kelty as we head into matchday 27 for some in League1. Promotion and relegation are top of the agenda as the Caley Jags visit Kelty Hearts renewing the 'training ground derby' Aye, those were the days my friend, I thought they'd never end... The sides have met twice this season already. An opening day 0-3 win for the Caley Jags back in August set us off on the road to recovery and a 2-2 draw in the Highlands showed that we can take nothing for granted. We had to come back from two down as Innes Murray scored twice for Kelty before Devine and Zimba squared the game early in the second half.

KDM FINAL will be played at Firhill, Partick, on Sunday April 5 and will be shown live on BBC ALBA, kick-off 4.10pm

Will we go with our KDM Team or will we revert to our standard League1 outfit. To be honest, if they were good enough to eliminate an Ayr United XI it would be reasonable to expect them to be able to cope with bottom of the table Kelty Hearts. However, therein lies the stumbling block. I would expect Kelty to show more fight than Ayr did given their predicament.

Brannan was eligible to play at Ayr, but he will be suspended for the game at Kelty. I wonder if Liam Sole might be left out as well considering he was fortunate not to receive a red card at Ayr as he pushed his head into an opposition players face with what looked like a fair bit of intent. Naughty boy.

The KDM Trophy Final against Raith Rovers will be held at the 'NEUTRAL' venue of Firhill, Glasgow. For the removal of any doubt, that is FIRHILL PARK, GLASGOW. That's 58 miles from Starks Park and 170 miles from the Caledonian Stadium. Surely Perth was a better option? The final will go ahead at the Wyre Stadium at Firhill on Sunday April 5 and will be shown live on BBC ALBA, kick-off 4.10pm. Strewth!!!

Kelty almost took all three points at Cove last week but for a late equaliser from their hosts ten minutes from the end.

Doesn't make for great reading but what you might expect for a team fighting to avoid relegation. They have stemmed the defeats and replaced them with draws. The first D was at home to Alloa (1-1) before two defeats to QotS (3-1) & Stenny (0-2). A decent 0-0 draw with Accies and 1-1 draws v Peterhead & Cove. Sandwiched in there, they put Cove out of the Scottish Cup on penalties away from home and gave a good account of themselves in a 2-0 defeat to the Pars in the Scottish Cup. So, not all doom and gloom as might have been suggested by the red and grey indicators. The defeats are against two of the top teams and they contained Alloa and Accies and were unfortunate not to take all three points at Cove.

Beware the scalded cat!!!

Attacking midfielder Ross Cunningham has returned to Kelty and scored on his second debut for the Fife club. Apparently he scored a screamer off the bench in the draw against Peterhead. Ross was last seasons player of the year for Kelty before he went to Stirling Albion. In his previous spell for the Maroons Ross made 73 apps and scored 20 goals, finishing joint top scorer in League1 for season 2024/25!

Ricco Diack is their top scorer in the League this season with 6 goals but he has since returned to Partick Thistle.

KDM TROPHY SEMI-FINAL

Been a long time coming, but we are now getting down to the business end of the KDM Trophy. It’s a massive night at Somerset Park! Only Ayr United stand between us and a place in the Challenge Cup final this Tuesday, 24 February. The second finalist will be decided tomorrow night when Airdrie host Raith Rovers. If you can't make it to the game, both semi-finals are live on BBC Alba!

It's another tough task as we look to end the run of another Championship side in Scott Brown's Ayr United who currently sit 4th in their League Table. We have already put out second placed Partick Thistle on penalties after a 3-3 draw followed by a hard fought 1-0 win over fellow League1 contenders Stenhousemuir. Incidentally, Ayr United and Ross County played out a no scoring draw at the weekend whilst we were being held in the Highlands by Stenhousemuir, our nearest rivals in League1. Scott Brown has got the Honest Men performing at a good level and has them hovering around the edge of the play-off places.

That was our squad at the weekend against Stenhousemuir in League1. The squad won't differ much from Saturday, but I'm sure some legs will be rested as we look to keep our promotion hopes on track. At the same time, we need to remain focussed on the task in hand I have no doubt we will see a few changes from Saturday's starting XI. Red carded Ben Brannan should be available for this tournament therefore it might be prudent to play him tonight as he won't be available for our next League1 game against Kelty Hearts. Joe Chalmers has missed the last couple of games and will we see our front runners given a break to prepare for the weekend?

That was the KDM Trophy side that knocked out Championship leaders St Johnstone on 17th February in a penalty shoot-out after a 3-3 draw over 90 minutes. Former Caley Jag George Oakley scored twice in this delayed 1/4 Final, his first start since the end of August. Kevin Holt scored Ayr's third goal. A dramatic ending to the ninety minutes saw St Johnstone draw level with two goals from the 89th minute. The Honest Men progressed winning the penalty shoot-out 4-5.

Ayr only made one change to the starting XI when Ross County visited Somerset Park at the weekend. New signing from Celtic, Ben Summers, came in to replace Anton Dowds who joined the Ayr sidelined alongside Rus, Murphy, Ure and Watret.

Mark McKenzie is Ayr's top scorer in the Championship with seven goals, Jamie Murphy has five.

George Finney has been loaned in from Everton.

Kenzie Mitchell has joined Auchinleck Talbot for the remainder of the season.

Crucial Six Pointer Clash

Every point is a prisoner from here on in as we face a crucial six-pointer at home to nearest challengers Stenhousemuir. Gary Naysmith's side have been the biggest threat to our aspirations to return to the championship for next season. Make no bones about it, they are the real deal and are having a tremendous season thus far and a tidy Scottish Cup run to boot, where they thrashed Morton 4-0 then gave Falkirk a hard time before fatigue set in once extra-time kicked in. Not only that, but their League form has been consistent and they have already beaten the Caley Jags at home and away this term. The Warriors are unbeaten at home in the League for the last twelve fixtures, since Alloa Athletic beat them on the opening day of the season on August 2nd, and that has been a solid platform for them to build their season around. We did edge them out in the quarter final of the KDM Trophy, but that was another tough encounter. We moved five points ahead last weekend after Stenhousemuir dropped two points against Montrose whilst we beat Hamilton Accies in a tense win at Broadwood. All in, this should be another big game which could indicate where the title might be heading.

A date for the diary: Our KDM Trophy fate has been decided when Ayr United beat St Johnstone after a dramatic ending and a penalty shoot out win. St Johnstone came back from the dead with two goals in the 89th & 94th minute to level the tie at 3-3. Ayr went on to win the shoot-out 5-4 and we will face them at Somerset Park with the game being shown live on BBC Alba. Tuesday 24th February 19:45 kick-off.

That was our starting XI in the Broadwood bruiser. Not the prettiest of games but pretty doesn't win titles. Points do, and we came home with all three thanks to Alfie Bavidge's superb headed goal.

Our League form picked up after a punishing January fixture schedule. Having lost the previous two games against Stenny & Montrose, we steadied the ship with a hard fought 0-0 D at Cove. We kicked on again beating East Fife (0-2) & Alloa (3-1). A hard fought draw at Palmerston next where we led twice before being pegged back in a quality 2-2 draw. We beat East Fife comfortably 3-0 and followed that with our BBC Alba extravaganza at Broadwood (0-1)

Apparently Alfie Bavidge has now been told that he will be a free agent at the end of this season as they won't be renewing his contract. Keep it quiet. Would be great if the two Alfie's followed us into the championship next season.

The Warriors squad that dropped points against Montrose at home in a 2-2 draw. An og and one from Finlay Gray had the Warriors ahead before Calum Sandilands got his second of the game ten minutes before the end as he followed up on a saved penalty kick by Taylor Sutherland.

The first D was a 0-0 draw at Alloa followed by three wins on the bounce over Queens, East Fife & Kelty, scoring a total of nine without reply. Their last two D were both 2-2 at home against Peterhead & Montrose.

Striker Matty Aitken was named as League1 Player of the Month, scoring five times in January. Great season for the experienced striker. And it comes as no surprise to find Gary Naysmith picking up the Manager of the Month award.

Winger Kane Ritchie-Hosler has joined on loan from Dunfermline Athletic.
