We are the stars of the late show this Saturday as we face Hamilton Accies at Broadwood. Not only that, but it's the 'get your Gaelic phrasebook out time' as we are on the telly. BBC Alba, with the game kicking off at 17:30. Accies tales of woe are ongoing, we all know how that feels, the old one step forward, two steps backward routine. However they have still maintained a level of competitiveness, albeit not as combative as they were at the start of the season. This could be a spanner in the works fixture with Accies League position not indicative of their form on the pitch due to points deduction for breaches of regulations. That's now a total of 21 points deducted this season for breaches of the rules. However, we should be on a high after our more recent form and should be kicking on from here until the end of the season.

Our starting XI that dismantled East Fife 3-0 last weekend, a result that put us three points ahead of Stenhousemuir and a further two points ahead of Queen of the South who drew at Cove Rangers. Our goals came from Alfie Stewart, Paul Allan and Alfie Bavidge. New loanee Ben Brannan came on for the final few minutes after his surprise, but welcome return from Kilmarnock.

Our form has picked up at just the right time after the hectic January schedule saw us drop points and drop out of the Scottish Cup to Spartans. The Loss was the second on the bounce having lost to Stenny 7 League games ago. The 6th game was defeat at Montrose by 2-1. A draw at Cove slowed the process before we kicked on again beating East Fife (0-2) & Alloa (3-1). A hard fought draw at Palmerston next where we led twice before being pegged back in a quality 2-2 draw. Last week we beat East Fife comfortably 3-0.

Ben Brannan looks like a direct replacement for Ross Millen who it is believed may have fallen foul of some form of internal discipline after his red card at Montrose.

Jake Davidson has joined The Spartans FC on loan until the end of the season, subject to Scottish FA clearance as he continues to strengthen after his serious knee injury in November 2024.

Accies last game was a goalless draw at New Central Park, Kelty on January 31st. No game last week due to Stenhousemuir playing Falkirk in the Scottish Cup. Dylan McGowan has been appointed Assistant Manager and will be Darian MacKinnon's right hand man for the remainder of the season.

The two defeats over the last six League1 fixtures started at the Caledonian Stadium where the Caley Jags avenged an early season loss to Accies (3-1) by thumping them 4-0. The second loss was a 4-1 defeat to QotS. The first W was a home win over Alloa (1-0), then two wins over Peterhead (2-3) and Cove 2-0 before the draw at Kelty.

Accies squad has changed somewhat since the start of the season as expected given their predicament.

Hamilton Academical have received a six-point deduction for failing to pay players' wages on time, their third points penalty this season.

In December, the League One club were docked nine points for their failure to successfully acquire a bronze-level Scottish FA club licence by 31 March.

That came after losing six points in October for paying trialists and fielding amateur players while under a transfer embargo.

The accumulated loss of 21 points leaves Accies second bottom of the table on 17 points, three above Kelty Hearts and two behind Cove Rangers.

The latest breach relates to not paying players on time, and in full, on 31 December 2025.

After the hectic January schedule we can now ease back on the throttle a tad and take a slightly more leisurely approach to February kicking off with a home fixture against East Fife on Saturday, a team we fitted in to our January schedule just a couple of weeks ago with a 0-2 win at Baltic Bayview. We saw out our January League1 duties with another win over Alloa followed by a hard earned draw away to Queen of the South. What all that means is that we still top the table, level on points with Stenhousemuir, and we still have a game in hand over them. It's very tight at the top with Queens on form and pushing hard and Alloa looking likely to be the fourth team to stay in the play off places come the end of the season. However, it's still all to play for with around forty points up for grabs.

Rumours abound that Ben Brannan is coming back to us on loan from Killie for the rest of the season. Happy days!

Our starting XI at Palmerston where we led twice but had to settle for a draw against a much improved QotS since we last played them in the 4-0 TV thrashing towards the end of November. This one ended 2-2 with a deflected Sole effort putting us ahead before a Kennedy cross nestled into the back of the net. A superb header from Alonge put us back in front before a late Hewitt strike levelled an intriguing contest. The point was enough for the us to retain top spot with the top four all drawing.

During our jam-packed January, we lost the first two in our last six League1 games, going down 1-0 at Ochilview followed by defeat at Montrose (2-1). We slowed the rot at Cove (0-0) before we lifted the spirits with wins at East Fife (0-2) & Alloa (3-1). The final game was that draw at Palmerston in a quality encounter.

Last time at Bayview 2 - 0: On the Road Again
Another away game as we play catch-up at Bayview. The first half passed everyone by as nothing happened. A much better second forty-five saw Inverness build a head of steam before substitute Alfie Stewart lashed home a swerving shot from outside the box. Alfie Bavidge raced clear in time added on to seal the deal and put the Caley Jags back to winning ways and back on top of the table. Good win in difficult conditions.... but that first half needs wiped from the memory.

Two or three struggling according to Kells?

A more encouraging performance last weekend from the Fifers but they still went down 2-3 to Montrose in a game they probably should have taken something from. Alas, it's not been a great run since they beat Elgin City in the KDM Trophy win at Elgin City, winning 2-3 before bowing out to Championship side Arbroath with a 3-0 defeat. The same side that ended their Scottish cup campaign. However, let's not dwell on Scottish Cup results this season

It's quite straightforward to be honest. Six League1 defeats on the trot! It started with two 0-1 defeats at home to Peterhead & Kelty Hearts. Thrashed @ Stenhousemuir (5-0), v Inverness (0-2), @ QotS (5-1) and the last one at home to Montrose 2-3.

In the January sales, East Fife took on some fresh legs and moved a couple on.

Palmerston Test

It's one of the more difficult away games of the season to round of an arduous January schedule, made more draining with multiple postponements and a demanding fixture schedule of seven away games on the trot. It all comes to a climax at Palmerston Park Dumfries on Saturday 31st January. A standard 3:00pm kick off time is set for what could prove to be a crucial meeting with Queen of the South, a team on good form at the moment, and that has seen them climb up to third in the table, just three points behind the Caley Jags and Warriors. Inverness have won the two previous encounters this season, but home advantage is often an indicator in these fixtures.

We had a Tuesday night KDM tie to negotiate against Stenhousemuir and after a bit of a tense battle against the Warriors we moved into the semi-finals thanks to Alfie Bavidge's second half strike. That side showed seven changes from the one that beat Alloa three days earlier where only Ross Munro, Calum MacLeod, Oscar MacIntyre and Remi Savage retained their starting places. Basically we changed the entire midfield and front players. I imagine we might revert to something along the lines of the Alloa game, depending on tired legs etc. If rumours are true, Ross Millen will be missing 10 matches through suspension

The first W was the 4-0 thrashing of Accies at home then we started our seven away games that included Scottish Cup ties, postponements, extra time's & penalties, KDM ties. That resulted in L1 defeats at Stenny & Montrose then a 0-0 draw at Cove before a mini revival with W's v East Fife & Alloa. Been a bumpy ride of late but hopefully we are through the worst of it now and the win over Stenny in the KDM has laid down a marker.

Chanka Zimba is our top L1 scorer with 7 goals, 15 in all competitions and Alfie Bavidge has six L1 goals, 16 in all comps including x4 in that mismatch v Dumbarton in the KDM.

The two previous meetings this season have been wins for the Caley Jags 0-2 & 4-0: Back in Sept the game at Palmerston unfolded thus: It was a second airing for the new away strip and the visitors didn't have to wait long for the pink strip to open the scoring through Chanka Zimba in the 9th minute. Thereafter it was Queens keeper Ross Stewart doing his utmost to stem the flow in a first half dominated by the Caley Jags, but with only one goal and five bookings, would we pay the penalty for not scoring more and picking up yellow cards instead? These two teams had started the day on ten points apiece and just in behind current table toppers Stenhousemuir. By half time, Inverness found themselves at the top. It took a 94th minute long range strike from Luis Longstaff to secure the points after keeper Stewart had come up for a corner only to find himself stranded as we scored on the break forward. Alas Stenhousemuir scored another couple to regain top spot.

Queens were idle in midweek, having been put out of the KDM Trophy by Raith Rovers @ Stark's Park on 6th January by 1-0. This was their L1 squad that hammered East Fife 5-1 last Saturday, four days after we ground out a 2-0 win at the same ground in Methil. Stott, Kennedy (p), Douglas, Dickenson and Allan (p) were the scorers. Some turnaround for Peter Murphy's side since we thrashed them 4-0 on the telly back in November when Queens, to put it mildly, were hapless.

WARRIORS KDM TROPHY 1/4 FINAL

Not just a KDM Quarter Final, but maybe an opportunity for either club to lay down a marker and give us an indication as to where the League1 title might be heading. I'm sure a resurgent Queen of the South will also have something to say about that, but in the meantime we need to deal with this KDM Challenge. It's obviously a big challenge with these two sides level at the top of League1 and Stenhousemuir could not be in better form having recently knocked Morton out of the Scottish Cup in emphatic 4-0 fashion and consolidating their presence at the top end of the table with three League wins in January, scoring nine whilst conceding zero. In fact, the only team to score against the Warriors was Stirling Albion (they did the same against us) in the previous round of the KDM Trophy which ended 1-2 for Stenhousemuir. St Johnstone or Ayr United is the prize for winning this one.

That was our squad that prevailed over Alloa Athletic at the weekend, coming from behind to record a comfortable 3-1 win with goals from Chanka Zimba x2 and a first League goal for Jordan Alonge with a composed finish. That's 15 goals in all competitions for Big Chanka.

I would imagine that we will be rotating the squad despite this being a quarter final with the winners having to play either St Johnstone or Ayr United in the semi-final. However, it is an opportunity to get one over your closest rivals for promotion and I'm sure that won't be lost on the respective managers.

Our last KDM game saw us end Partick Thistle's run in the competition with a 3-3 draw before we emerged victorious from the penalty spot. In the previous round we had that mismatched 0-9 win against a Dumbarton XI at the Rock. Did that win give us a false sense of invincibility as we went off the boil soon after that crushing win. Back on track now over the last couple of games with much needed League1 wins.

The warriors were on the council telly at the weekend as they beat Kelty Hearts 2-0, their third win on the bounce in January on League duty, all without conceding a goal whilst bagging nine. Dale Carrick is a man that needs kept quiet. The former Hearts and Binos player has pace, power and an eye for goal. Also in great scoring form just now is Ross Taylor who scored both goals against Annan and Olly Whyte who scored both against Stirling Albion. Matty Aitken has bagged himself four goals in January so far. There's a reason that the men from Ochilview are hovering at the top of the table. They are a decent side. The 4-0 thrashing of Morton in the Scottish Cup should be a warning we will do well to heed.

Whyte scored the winner when the sides met at Ochilview in December and back in August an Aitken penalty and a late Ross Taylor strike saw them get the better of the Caley Jags after Paul Allan had given us the lead with a penalty. If memory serves me right, that was another game where stats don't win matches.

In the knock out rounds of the KDM Trophy Stenhousemuir have beaten Annan Athletic 2-0 and Stirling Albion 1-2 last time out. Obviously the priority for both teams this season is to get into the Championship which could see both sides change from their League1 starting XI. That said, a place in the semi-final at stake and getting one over the opposition could see both squads take to the park with strong first choices.

Backlog starts at the MGM Timber

After a seasonal collapse, Inverness need to get back on track quickly as they play catch-up at the home of East Fife. Tuesday night @19:45 will see the Methil men take on a stuttering Caley Jags, fresh from being dumped out of the Scottish Cup by league2 leaders Spartans. East Fife are on a similar trajectory to the Caley Jags having lost all four of their games in a month since beating Elgin City in the KDM Trophy. Their form has been erratic, going from beating Stenhousemuir 1-0 at home to being thrashed 5-0 by the same side less than a month later. Like Inverness, their early season form seems to have deserted them and recent games have left both sets of fans looking for for an improvement.

Time for the Caley Jags players to stand up and be counted. There's plenty waiting in the wings if they can't keep a level of consistency sufficient enough to get us out of this League. They are good enough, now get out there and show the world.

Let's name and shame them. Here's the guys that put paid to our aspirations in the Scottish Cup this season. A team with enough talent to run away with League1 but unable to beat the Spartans.

Last time out Inverness fell to their worst Scottish Cup result ever as Spartans dug deep to take the tie to penalties against a gutless Caley Jags. They confirmed their inability to score with the first two penalties being saved by MotM Paddy Martin and we never recovered from that going down 4-2 in the shoot-out after 120 minutes without a goal.

Recent League form is no better with only one point from our last three games scoring just one goal whilst conceding three. The only highlight of late was ironically a penalty shoot-out over Partick Thistle in the KDM Trophy after an encouraging 3-3 draw. That was probably our downfall four days later at Ainslie Park.

This fixture was carried over from November due to the postponed Scottish Cup schedules against Tranent getting in the way, and they were delayed three times due to a waterlogged pitch.

One of our better displays this season was the fixture at the Caledonian Stadium where we beat East Fife 4-1 at the end of September.

Fifers Swamped in Second Half Blitz: The rain arrived just in time for kick-off in the Highlands after a few days of late Summer sun. The fifers were in no mood to be turned over by an on form Inverness and made life difficult for their hosts. However, David Wotherspoon headed the Caley Jags in front after seventeen minutes. Nathan Austin levelled just before the interval but Wotherspoon scored his second after an hour and a deflected effort by Alfie Stewart added a third. 99 bonk as Alfie Bavidge completed the scoring in the 99th minute. That win put Inverness top of the table for now. Full Time: 4-1

The Fifers squad that went out of the KDM Trophy 3-0 to Arbroath on 13th of January. Rollo was in goal for that one and Tommy Goss has since returned to Annan Athletic after being on loan at Bayview. There's a few changes in that side to the one that normally is on League duty. Nathan Austin

Their last League1 fixture was that 5-0 drubbing from Stenhousemuir at Ochilview. Prior to that they had been beaten 1-0 by Kelty Hearts and Peterhead.

East Fife had no game last weekend as their Cup journey was ended at the end of November by Arbroath (2-0), who also ended the Fifers involvement in the KDM Trophy a week ago by 3-0.

Accies beat Peterhead 1-2 at the weekend ☠️

Scottish Cup 4th Round

In a hectic January schedule, we now have to fit in a 4th Round Scottish Cup tie against Edinburgh side Spartans. It should be going ahead on Saturday at Ainslie Park, a ground they share with Edinburgh City. Kick-off is timed at 3:00pm. The Caley Jags are in the middle of a fixture backlog after a few rescheduled games. Two postponed games at the start of January will see us embark on a run of four away games on the trot in the space of 10 days before a home game against Alloa on the 24th January. Having beaten Partick in the KDM Trophy, we have now added another home game (KDM) against Stenhousemuir on 27th/28th before we end January away to Queen of the South. That will be seven games in twenty-one days. Tough schedule by any standard but one which we should relish.

Regardless, back to our current status and it's off to the Vanloq Community Stadium to face the Spartans.

A sight we never thought we would ever see as Shinnie lifts the Cup

That was our victorious squad for the KDM Trophy shoot-out win at Firhill in midweek. Billy Mckay scored twice after Oscar MacIntyre opened our account in the first half. The main hero on the night was Ross Munro who saved two penalties. One during the first half which was in fact a triple save as he blocked the resultant follow ups and a brilliant save in the penalty shoot out to set up the win.

After a couple of postponements, we made heavy weather in knocking Tranent out of the Cup at the neutral venue of Millfield Park, Haddington. Mitchell Robertson and Chanka Zimba had us 2-1 ahead at the interval and that's how it remained. Tranent were well fired up for this one and that must give Spartans a boost as they will look to cause a cup shock.

Inverness have loaned back a former Academy graduate at the Caledonian Stadium. Kieron Willox, 19 years old, is from Nairn and began his career at Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC, progressing through our Academy before joining Scottish Premiership side Rangers at the age of 16 in 2022. During his time at Rangers, Kieron made appearances for the club’s Under-18s and B Team. He comes in from Stoke City.

Matchday Info

For fans making own way, Spartans FC suggest getting off the train at Waverly and getting a number 8 or 27 bus which will drop supporters off within a 5-minute walk of the ground. For those driving it would be parking in the sides streets around the stadium area. Away fans will use the Bain & Irvine stand at Spartans and any under 16 fans must be accompanied on entry and throughout the game by an adult.

Spartans last squad out was at home to Dumbarton FC on January 3rd. Bradley White opened the scoring as half time approached. Marc McNulty added a second with twenty minutes to go and that's how it ended in this League2 clash.

Like Tranent, Spartans won't be an easy route to the next round. Plenty experience at Ainslie Park, none moreso than former Caley Jag favourite and captain Sean Welsh. Marc McNulty seems to have been everywhere in his senior career except the old firm and at 33 he still has plenty of life left in him. James Craigen has also been around mostly just outside the premiership in his 34 years and Callum Booth has been at Hibs, Partick Thistle, St Johnstone and Dundee United amongst others during his 34 years.

Spartans are running away with League 2 at the moment, eight points clear of second place East Kilbride. They have the second best defensive record in that league and have won their last three League games.

They got to Round 4 of the Scottish Cup having eliminated East Kilbride 2-1 (McNulty ⚽⚽)and then Bonnyrigg Rose by the same score (Watson⚽ Stowe⚽)

From Wiki: Ainslie Park on Pilton Drive in north Edinburgh is the home ground of Spartans. The stadium has a capacity of 3,612 (504 seated). Ainslie Park is only part of the new project that Spartans have invested into their new ground, a wider development of the Spartans Community Football Academy. The new facility incorporates a fully enclosed stadium which meets SFA and SPFL criteria, with an artificial pitch, floodlights, seating for 504 spectators and an overall capacity of 3,612. Another full size, floodlit artificial pitch sits adjacent to the main playing area and the accommodation incorporates six changing rooms, a club room, committee room and a physio room. We try again

Weather permitting, the Caley Jags will face the Harry Wraggs in the last 16 of the KDM Trophy at the Wyre Stadium at Firhill on Tuesday night. The snow was aplenty up North but Partick managed to play against Morton at the weekend with a stirring three goal comeback in a five goal encounter whilst we were snowed off in our home game versus Peterhead. However, don't fret if you are snowbound in the North. Should the game go ahead, the full match will be shown live on BBC Alba with a 7:45pm kick-off.

The original fixture was scheduled for 6th January but was postponed due to weather and travel conditions but the big thaw is on and we should be going ahead a week later on Tuesday 13th of January with a 19:45 Kick-off. It was also due to be screened live by BBC Alba but that is unlikely now. Since the original date, Partick went down 2-0 at Dingwall last Friday night with former Caley Jag Jay Henderson bagging two first half goals.

We faltered again away to Cove Rangers on Saturday afternoon and had Ross Munro to thank for a 96th minute penalty save to earn a point in a 0-0 draw. No wins in three for the Caley Jags but Chanka Zimba returned to the starting XI after a thigh injury.

That was our team we put out against Montrose in League1 action although we have previously tweaked our side for KDM games. Logan Ross usually gets the gloves but we are in with the big boys this time so Kells and Billy will make the call on that one as we look to progress.

Our last KDM game was a bit of a mismatch as we thrashed Dumbarton 9-0 at the Rock, a record breaking score for the Caley Jags. However, we were found wanting in our next two League1 games going down away to Stenhousemuir and Montrose.

Partick will be another step up in quality and if we are serious about progressing, then we need to put a strong starting XI on the park. We gave them a game in an early pre-season encounter, but we can't read too much into that.

Two early goals from Trialist 'A' believed to be Destiny Ojo, got Inverness off to a great start at Petershill in this pre-season game against Partick Thistle. He scored in the 9th minute when Partick lost possession in midfield and Wotherspoon advanced before slipping a pass through to Ojo who found the net with a tidy finish. Another error and it's another goal for Ojo. He benefitted from the error and he took the ball round Budinauckas before rolling it into the net. It remained that score up to the interval.
HALF TIME 0-2
Three quickfire goals from Stanway, Chalmers and Stanway again put Partick ahead within 8 minutes of the restart. Stanway knocked in from close range and a minute later Chalmers, from the edge of the box, found the back of the net with an excellent finish high to the keeper's right. It got worse two minutes later when Stanway received the ball from Crawford on the right and and he fired high into the top right hand corner of the net. Three in three minutes, and that's how it ended. Looks like most subs from both sides got a game. FULL TIME: 3-2

Partick's team that beat Morton 3-2 coming from 2-0 down to take the three points at the weekend. Stanway, Turner and Tony Watt with a 94th minute strike rounding of the comeback at the death.

Against County Oisin Smyth replaced Fitzpatrick in the starting XI but he has since returned to parent club St Mirren. Partick went down 2-0 at Dingwall last Friday night with former Caley Jag Jay Henderson bagging two first half goals.

Let's not forget that despite an erratic set of results recently, Partick are still second behind St Johnstone in the Championship despite just one League win in their last six and three draws and two losses.

Mark Wilson bemoaned at Dingwall:

"If you start a game like that then it's incredibly difficult to get a foothold... We just didn't deal with those two moments well enough and gave ourselves too much of a mountain to climb."

One would expect Partick to have enough in the tank to see off the Caley Jags, but the underdog tag suits us better.
