Binos KDM Challenge

This game has been brought forward to Friday night with an 8:00pm kick-off. That's the same night as Scotland play Denmark in a World Cup Qualifier, but surely there won't be much interest in the flogging of a dead horse and the Caledonian SarensPSG Stadium will be bursting at the seams instead. The Binos have been busy this in August playing seven games in total with three wins, three defeats and a draw. The Caley Jags bowed out of the North of Scotland Cup this week in what suspiciously looked like a tactical decision to leave the competition for Highland League sides to battle for the trophy in the final where Forres Mechanics will line up against Inverness Clachnacuddin, who disposed of Ross County in the other semi-final.

Our last KDM Trophy fixture saw us beat Aberdeen B 4-1

It took a while for us to subdue the eager Young Dons side but eventually we did thanks to a hat-trick from Chanka Zimba on the night. The young Dons had taken an early lead through Tristan Steven before Zimbal levelled just before the break. It wasn't until the final ten minutes before we broke their resistance with Zimba netting a further twice and old Billy Mckay coming on to notch a fourth in the dying embers. We also beat Elgin City 4-1 in our opening KDM fixture where goals from Alfie Bavide (x2 one pen), Robbie Thompson and a Paul Allan penalty earned us the win. Mark Gallagher got Elgin's goal, and a screamer it was.

We have been rotating our squad for these games as opposed to our League1 side as you would imagine given our own hectic start to the season, however, the bench has always looked stronger in the KDM cup just in case. Last Saturday we beat League leaders Alloa so our main squad seems to be in fine fettle.

We are now out of the NoS Cup having 'lost' to Forres Mechanics. Not the strongest side we put out in that game with little to no cavalry on the bench although Zimba did play and got our goal in a 2-1 defeat at Mosset Park. Forres go on to play Clach in the final who beat Ross County 2-1 at Grant Street.

Scott Kellacher now bigging up this event.... he must have got a row for originally criticising the format. Hey ho, it does appear to be a bit of overkill, but I'm sure by the time the knockout stages come along, people will treat it with a bit more respect.

Albions squad that beat Stranraer last week to round off a hectic opening month schedule after which they sit third in League2 and have one win and one defeat in the KDM Trophy. Keeper Robert Duffy has played in both their KDM fixtures so far.

Dale Carrick will be a big loss for them this season, however they have brought in some decent players. Cannon, Harkness Cunningham and Banner to name a few.

Stirling Albion were founded in 1945. I never knew they were losted to be honest.

Wikipedia told me: Stirling Albion was founded in 1945 after the town's previous football team King's Park had failed to survive the Second World War. King's Park's ground (Forthbank) had been damaged during the war, having been hit by a German bomb on 20 July 1940. This was one of only two bombs to fall on the town during the Second World War.

The new club was the brainchild of local businessman Thomas Fergusson, a local coal magnate, and he purchased the Annfield estate to build a new stadium. Annfield was situated within a quarter of a mile from the town centre and would be the home of The Binos until 1992.

The name 'Albion' supposedly came from the make of Fergusson's coal trucks. This however is an urban myth Albion Coal lorries were used as grandstands but the club was named at a meeting of fans long before a ball was kicked. (Reference, Stirling Journal Newspaper, 1945.) The name Albion was chosen because it was an old word for Great Britain and held meaning for the founder.

NoS Cup Semi-Final

Short trip to Mosset Park, Forres to see the Mechanics in the Semi-Final of the North of Scotland Cup on Tuesday evening 2nd of September. The game kicks off at 8:00pm. A place in the final up for grabs with Ross County playing Clach @ Grant Street the following night, also an 8:00pm kick-off.

The league was conceived at the Inverness Workman’s Club on August 4th 1893, all the clubs present expressing an enthusiastic willingness to become part of a league. After discussing the logistical matters, the Scottish Football Association blessed the venture and The Highland Football League was born. By February 7th 1894, after undergoing the teething problems of a new venture and having lost one of the original teams from the fixture list, the League reported a surplus of five pounds. This rocky first season was concluded, and Thistle became the first champions of the Highland Football League. The league consisted of seven teams in 1893-94, those of Thistle, Caley, Clachnacuddin, Forres Mechanics, Union, Citadel and Camerons.

Forres Mechanics were founded in 1884 and are the oldest Highland League side. Despite being the oldest Association Football Club in the North of Scotland, Forres Mechanics were not at the time of their formation the oldest club in the town of Forres, there having been in existence for fully two years the St. Lawrence Club.

Having beaten Lossiemouth 6-0 in the first round, the Caley Jags were drawn at home in Rnd2 against Strathspey Thistle who were given a bye into this round. The Highland League outfit had made their best ever start to a season winning four of their opening six games.

This was the Caley Jags side that cruised through the last round beating Strathspey Thistle 6-0 with all the damage being done in the first half. The second half was just about player management and avoiding unnecessary injuries. Plenty of attacking options in this squad and good game time for those less involved in the first team games

Robert summed up: Not much to say about that second half. Useful game time for the five young subs, more good saves by Logan Ross and nearly a last minute hat trick for Robbie Thompson, and that was about that.

Forres beat Rothes 3-0 to get to this game. Their scorers on the night were:

This will be a stiffer test for the Caley Jags after two 6-0 wins in previous rounds. Forres look to have a shoot on sight attitude and it certainly pays off on occasion.

The Mechanics sit in the middle of the Highland League in tenth position after three wins and a draw in their opening eight League games. However, they have lost their last three games and now have a minus six goal difference having scored eleven times.

Wasps Flying High

Top of the table with a game in hand, Alloa Athletic come North on Saturday on Ladies Day for a game scheduled to kick-off at 3:00pm. It's been a great start to the season for the Wasps who were the lowest placed team to get out of the group stages of the League Cup, ousting Dundee in the process and now sit top of League1 after three games whilst almost all others have played four times. It's all happening this week in the Highlands. A hat-trick for Zimba, a lambada, rumba or samba for the ladies, top of the Mickey Mouse League for the CJ's and new strip launched at the Caledonian Sarens PSG Stadium.

The feelgood factor is back. What's not to like!

We took a deserved win at Links Park last Saturday with this squad. Paul Allan and Ross Millen missed out but Adam MacKinnon started on the bench as he builds up to full fitness, as did Chanka Zimba, Jordan Alonge, Liam Sole and Robbie Thompson. First half goals from Alfie Bavidge and Calum MacLeod did the damage as we eased to the points although questions may be asked why we tailed off in the second half. That's three wins out of four and three clean sheets for the CJ's and that puts us 7th in the table, despite the five point deduction to start the season with. Good to get into the peleton early.

We unleashed a hungry man in our midweek Mickey Mouse Cup win over the Young Dons. They took the lead through Tristan Stephen but Chanka Zimba soon warmed up. Three minutes later he equalised and was generally too much for the young Dons to handle as he stroked in another couple for his hat-trick before Billy Mckay ended the scoring in the final minute to make it an ultimately comfortable 4-1 win. With Zimba, Sole, Alonge and Thompson all starting, we were always going to be a threat in attack and that was backed up by a superstrong bench.

Alloa are a game behind the rest (Kelty Hearts excepted) but still top the table being the only side with a 100% record in League1. Not high scoring at the moment, but they have shown a penchant for extra late goals this season and have conceded only once in the League. They started the League campaign with an opening day win at Stenhousemuir, coming from behind to win 1-2. Dale Carrick had opened the scoring for Muir but goals either side of the interval by Steven Buchanan and Kurtis Roberts secured the Wasps win. Another away win followed at East Fife by a solitary Dave Devine strike as they dug deep to come away with another three points. A creditable showing at Ibrox saw them bow out of the League Cup 4-2 against Rangers, although maybe that can now be viewed as a shock result... That was the game that resulted in the League1 encounter with Kelty being put on ice. Their resilience knows no bounds and last week they beat Hamilton Accies 1-0 at home with Devine again knocking in from close range to keep the Wasps buzzing. Manager Andy Graham has been keeping his hand in on the park as well and he featured in the midweek KDM Trophy drama against St Mirren. The wasps came from two down to level the game with 91st and 92nd minute goals from a Lewis Bruin Waspy Special and a Luke Rankin tap in. Alas, they were pipped at the post by a 93rd minute strike by St Mirren's Calvin. Their two KDM fixtures have yielded no points thus far. (St Mirren B @ home & Stranraer away)

KDM Evolution Time

Aberdeen 'B' are the visitors on Tuesday night in the Cup of little interest in the early stages for many. I'm sure it will pick up in the latter stages, but with another five games to go before the knockout stages, that's a while away yet. Kick off is 7:45pm on Tuesday 26th August at the Caledonian SarensPSG Stadium. Inverness beat Elgin City 1-4 in their first game and the Young Dons lost 4-2 at Peterhead.

This was our fairly strong squad at Borough Briggs with Remi Savage, Paul Allan, Mathew Strachan, Jordan Alonge, Robbie Thompson and Alfie Bavidge all regular first XI performers and Chanka Zimba now a regular in the squad.

There was no scoring at the interval, but goals from Alfie Bavidge and Robbie Thompson put us in the driving seat. A Paul Allan penalty ended the contest although Elgin pulled one back with a spectacular strike from Mark Gallagher before another penalty was scored by Bavidge in time added on.

The new Challenge Cup format has been heavily criticised by managers with our own Scott Kellacher adding his own thoughts about the amount of additional games this can add to the squads season. It's a minimum of at least five extra games before the round of 32 knock out even begins. The end game is still light years away.

Alfie Stewart was cup-tied, and apparently unavailable for both sides and Billy confirmed in video below Alfie Bavidge will not be permitted to play either with Aberdeen the parent club.

Off to the Links

It's an away day for the Caley Jags on Saturday as they head to Links Park in Montrose. Both clubs have one point from the first three fixtures although Inverness are in a group of five teams that have won twice. Bad day at the home office for us last weekend as Stenhousemuir dug their heels in to sneak away down the A9 with all three points on a frustrating afternoon in the North. Montrose, on the other hand, saw mixed emotions as they came away from Cove with a red card and a point which could easily have been three but for a 94th minute equaliser. Scott Kellacher will be looking for a reaction this weekend and he has options after our squad players reeled Strathspey Thistle for six in the NoS Cup. Montrose must be like a retirement home for knackered footballers. Michae Gardyne and Craig Wighton have both retired.

Inverness were mugged last weekend when Stenhousemuir came North to park their bus before catching us on the hop with a late strike from Ross Taylor ten minutes from the end. It had been a game ruined by the incompetent Gavin Duncan who stopped the game, rightly or wrongly everytime a player landed on the turf. He dished out a penalty to both sides before the late strike secured all three points for the visitors. Paul Allan scored our spot kick while Matty Aitken levelled for the Warriors. Our opening fixtures saw victories over Kelty Hearts (3-0 Mckay, Longstaff, Wotherspoon) and a 2-0 home win over Peterhead (Wotherspoon, Sole). An Inverness CT XI played a North of Scotland tie against Strathspey Thistle and ran away with a 6-0 win as they sent Strathspey reeling. A good workout for most of the squad fringe players and those returning from injury. Two goals each for Robbie Thompson and Liam Sole and singles for Jordan Alonge and Mitchell Robertson, all in the first half, killed the tie as we cruised into a semi-final appointment at Forres Mechanics. Great to see Adam MacKinnon back on the park as part of his journey back to fitness. Alfie Bavidge and Chanka Zimba sat this one out, presumably keeping them fresh for this weekend. Robbie Thompson must be knocking on the door as well with another good performance captaining the side.

Scott Kellacher: Has not suffered two defeats in a row yet since becoming manager and he will be looking to get back on track after the setback last weekend. Doc Proc has a few niggles to contend with ahead of this one but we now have a decent depth to the squad. Maybe a start for Bavidge and Adam MacKinnon might be ready to step up a notch after his rehab. Ben Gardiner has gone out on loan to Brora Rangers for six months.

Montrose gained their first point last Saturday despite playing with ten men for the majority of the game. It still took a 94th minute headed goal from David Eguaibor to salvage a point for Cove Rangers in a see-saw game. Ewan Louden scored a brace whilst Callum Sandilands put Montrose 3-2 ahead with around half an hour of play left. Keir Bertie will miss this game after his red card with Ali Shrive likely to replace him. They started the season going down 2-0 at Hamilton on opening day and followed that with a 2-1 defeat at home to Kelty Hearts, Kieran Freeman with the Gable Endies goal. Sean Dillan & Ryan could be fit with Graham Webster ready soon.

The Caley Jags have won their opening two League1 fixtures netting five without reply against Kelty Hearts and Peterhead. Stenhousemuir went down 1-2 to Alloa Athletic on day one but bounced back last week to beat Cove Rangers 1-0. Both teams featured in the Challenge Cup in midweek. Inverness beating Elgin 1-4 and Stenhousemuir beating Rangers 'B' 2-1. Shaping up to be an open encounter in the Highlands.

Good start to the season for the Caley Jags beating Kelty Hearts away 3-0 then winning 2-0 over Peterhead at home. Billy McKay scored the first goal of the season at Kelty with Luis Longstaff adding a second before the interval. Wotherspoon with a clever finish on the hour completed the scoring in the opening game. Wotherspoon and Sole were the scorers against Peterhead either side of the interval. We fielded a fairly strong XI in midweek against Elgin City in the Challenge cup, despite making ten changes from the starting XI against Peterhead with only Remi Savage starting, and captaining the side to a 4-1 victory at Borough Briggs. Good workout for those not regularly starting and it was great to see Adam MacKinnon getting some game time. Alfie Bavidge is getting up to speed with a couple of goals and another great strike from Robbie Thompson who will be knocking on the door for a start. Paul Allan banged in a penalty as well with Mark Gallagher thrashing in a tremendous strike for Elgin from over 25yards high past Logan Ross in goal. Chanka Zimba also started. I doubt we have ever had a stronger bench with most of the regular starters sitting on it. Hopefully Liam Sole will be fit enough to play a part this weekend. He is an entertainer and will excite fans with his slaloming runs at defenders. Fingers crossed.

Scott Kellacher: Is well aware of the threat provided by Dale Carrick. Mathew Aitken is also a threat and he played over an hour in midweek as he comes back to full fitness.

This was the Warriors squad that beat Cove Rangers last weekend with Dale Carrick scoring again. Not much in it according to the match stats, but when you have a player with the quality of Carrick, then sometimes that's all you need. He also scored an early goal (15m) in their opening game in a 1-2 defeat to Alloa Athletic. Carrick joined the Warriors from Stirling Albion having scored 44 goals for the Binos. I'm sure he has scored a couple of these against us in recent years. (Scottish Cup 2022 3 - 2). Notice that Nat Wedderburn has gone to Cowdenbeath.

The Evolution of football

No rest for the wicked this midweek as Elgin City host Inverness in the KDM Evolution Trophy. That's the Challenge Cup to you and me. This one kicks-off at 19:45 on Tuesday evening at Borough Briggs, the first game in a mini series of six games to establish who progresses to the next stages of this elongated competition. The clubs have already met this season in a League Cup encounter at Inverness with the Caley Jags edging that one 2-0 as we made hard work of seeing off a stuffy City. Elgin lost all four games in the League Cup group F, scoring 2 but losing 19. We won two and lost two but like Elgin, we never got into the knockout stages.

1. League Phase:

• Participants: 30 teams, including those from Scottish League One, League Two, and Premiership B teams (reserve teams). 

• Organization: Teams are divided into three pots based on division and regionalized into North and South sections. 

• Matches: Each team plays six league phase matches against opponents from their region (three from each of the other two pots). 

• Scoring: Points from these matches are compiled into a single league table. 

• Progression: The top 22 teams from the league phase advance to the knockout stage.

2. Knockout Phase:

• Participants: The 22 qualifiers from the league phase join the 10 Championship teams. 

• Format: The competition progresses through traditional knockout rounds (Round of 32, Round of 16, etc.). 

• Seeding: Teams finishing in the top six of the league phase are seeded in the Round of 32, along with the Championship teams. 

• Final: The competition culminates in a final next spring. Century...

Kells is no a happy chappy regarding the format. Resting some and getting fringe players more game time, but we have to remain competitive whilst doing this. A great start to the League1 campaign for the Caley Jags who have won their opening two fixtures without conceding. A 3-0 win at Kelty (Mckay, Longstaff & Wotherspoon) was followed by a 2-0 home win over Peterhead.

We have been without Adam MacKinnon (a couple of weeks away), Ross Millen (a week or two away) and Jake Davidson (longer term) with Paul Allan recovering to get on the bench at the weekend. Liam Sole took a knock and was replaced before the hour just after scoring his first goal for the club and will be a doubt. David Wotherspoon scored the opener against Peterhead. Surely more game time for the likes of Alfie Bavidge, Chanka Zimba, Mitchell Robertson, Mathew Strachan, Jordan Alonge and Robbie Thompson with a swap of keepers on the cards to give Logan Ross a go between the sticks. Also an opportunity to rest the older legs to keep them fresh for the bigger challenge of League points.

Elgin went down 1-0 at home to East Kilbride at the weekend as the new League2 team got their first points in the Leagues. That was on the back of the opening fixture where Elgin lost out in a dramatic late late ending at Annan as the borders club scored in the 89th & 93rd minutes to pip Elgin who had levelled at 2-2 in the 92nd minute. Dramatic stuff and a 3-2 win for Annan on the opening day. This was Elgin's team against East Kilbride where Ross Draper was their MotM. Lewis Hyde and Brian Cameron did not feature at Annan through injury although Cameron was named on the bench along with Kane Hester who played the final sixteen minutes. Elgin picked up seven bookings at the weekend. Can we expect a bit of rough and tumble on Tuesday night. Allan Hale has a few still on the broken list at the moment Hyde, Dingwall, Girvan and Cairns.

Elgin players can be seen going through the traditional warm up routines used for centuries down at Borough Briggs as they try to manoeuvre their way round the Elgin Marbles. The placing of a trophy near the field of play is supposed to spur on the players and motivate them in their quest to win something. It's not worked since last century, but God loves a trier.
