Evolution Revolution

The clubs had already met this season in a League Cup encounter at Inverness with the Caley Jags edging that one 2-0 as we made hard work of seeing off a stuffy City. Elgin had lost all four games in the League Cup group F, scoring 2 but losing 19. We won two and lost two but like Elgin, we never got into the knockout stages. Tonight's game was the first one in the Group Stages of the Challenge Cup this year known as the KDM Evolution Trophy. To be honest, it's a bit of a white elephant this one with six group stage games before the knockout from 32 teams begins with the introduction of all the Championship teams. Expect many teams to be resting players with the more lucrative prize of promotion up for grabs.

There was no score after an even first half but second half goals from Alfie Bavidge (47, 90+5 pen), Robbie Thompson (50), Paul Allan (62 pen ) were enough to see off Elgin for whom Mark Gallagher scored a screamer. Good start to the group stages for Inverness.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This game has been brought to you by 𝕏
18’ | 0-0 Good ball from Alfie Bavidge finds Robbie Thompson in the box but his low effort is just wide.
21’ | 0-0 Post!
Into the Black
The two teams that got off to the best start last weekend met at the newly Christened SarensPSG Stadium but they start the day at opposite ends of the table due to our five point deduction in the aftermath of administration. Scott Kellacher had the pleasant dilemma of choosing his squad on merit rather than who is fit although Ross Millen, Adam MacKinnon and Jake Davidson require more time with Doc Proc before getting back on the pitch. Paul Allan made the bench. Peterhead have put together a decent squad full of Eastern promise with a few ex-Dons in their squad and plenty of experience in there as well. Peter Pawlett was injured last week and missed out, but Jack Newman, Cammy Smith, Jason Brown all started.
The Caley Jags took a deserved lead as half time approached, the tenacity and quality of Wotherspoon on the end of a superb move. Liam Sole added a second ten minutes into the second period and that ended the scoring. Alas he went off injured soon after and with that the game went into a bit of a lull as the hosts recorded their second win to climb into positive points with Peterhead rarely troubling the home goal.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A blustery afternoon that had already seen off the Moy Game Fair greeted the sides as the game got underway, the Caley Jags shooting towards the North Stand. A bright opening for the hosts put Peterhead on the back foot from the off. Although we dominated possession, Jack Newman was underworked in the visitors goal. Alfie Stewart brought out a great save from him after half an hour with a ferocious twenty-five yarder, the keeper flying high across goal to deny the wee man. The opening goal came five minutes before the break and it was a well worked move finished of by Wotherspoon. The set up was superb from Billy Mckay chesting an Alfie Stewart through ball down before laying it out wide for Oscar McIntyre to drill a low ball into the six yard box where Spoony did brilliantly to turn the ball into the net at the front post. We almost added a second but Newman saved brilliantly to deny Spoony with an acrobatic save.

HALF TIME: 1-0

Liam Sole knocked in a second in the fifty-fifth minute after a Longstaff shot had been blocked by the keeper or the post but unfortunately Sole limped off injured minutes later. Enter Alfie Bavidge and it wasn't long before he was in action dragging a shot wide after a good run to the box, cutting in from the left. He then combined with Billy Mckay but the veteran striker saw Newman tip his shot over. The final twenty was a bit of a lull with Inverness in total control. A late cross from the left saw the ball strike a defender and bounced close to the base of the post and out for a corner and with the home feet off the throttle another snippet for a consolation was drilled wide when Carnwath really should have made the keeper work.

FULL TIME: 2-0

Good result for the Caley Jags who dominated proceedings against a Peterhead side who came to park the bus. The referee was over officious and pedantic and constantly stopped play for the slightest of things making the second half duller than it should have been. Newman kept it close with two or three excellent saves whilst Ross Munro could have sat in the stand or gone for a coffee. Bottom line is that we are into positive figures so it's onwards and upwards from here. Accies and Alloa are the front runners on six points.

On CTO: Bookings were ridiculous apart from Longstaff's.

Off to a Flyer

at New Central Park

Scott Kellacher was busy in the transfer market yesterday scooping up Alfie Bavidge, Chanka Zimba and Mitchell Robertson to bolster his squad for the new season in League1. However none of them started with Bavidge and Robertson on the bench. Calum MacLeod filled in at right back with Oscar McIntyre moving to his favoured left back slot. Paul Allan, Ross Millen and Adam MacKinnon missed out again. The Caley Jags gave everyone else a five point head start just to make it fair. Pretty decent of them to be honest....... or was it because of last seasons administration At the end of the day it was a comfortable away win for the Caley Jags with goals from Mckay, Longstaff and Wotherspoon.

We got season 25/26 off and running on the artificial surface at New Central Park, Kelty. It only took four minutes for the opening goal in League1 and it was our own Billy Mckay that scored it from the edge of the box after Joe Chalmers won the ball to assist Billy with his fine finish, curling the ball round the defender and into the bottom corner. Mind you, Ross Munro was the first keeper in action to deny Innes Murray a minute earlier. An Alfie Stewart corner found Danny Devine in the box but he headed over from close range. Midway through the half Liam Sole was denied by Corey Armour in goal and a couple of minutes later he saved from Mckay's close range header. Up the other end and Scott Mercer fired over following a corner and after half an hour there's not much between the sides. Stewart headed just wide of the top corner as the visitors looked to double their lead. We did double our advantage five minutes before the break when the creative genius of David Wotherspoon saw Armour save before he crossed in moments later to give Luis Longstaff the opportunity to head home. Joe Chalmers went close and Stewart brought out another save before the last action saw Murray's shot saved by Ross Munro

HALF TIME: 0-2

No changes at the break and five minutes in Chalmers shot over and Murray missed the target at the other end. Alfie Stewart struck a post but we would not be denied a third and Wotherspoon delivered it on the hour fighting for the ball before juggling and clipping it over the keeper. Only Spoony would do it in style like this, a sort of Spoonyerism. Longstaff shot over just after the goal. Dangerman Murray was unlucky as he fired over direct from a free kick, clipping the corner of the bar on its way as the visitors looked to get back into the game. Second half substitutions disrupted the flow and Alfie Bavidge replaced Mckay twenty minutes from the end. The visitors saw out the remainder of the game cutting our tally to minus two.

FULL TIME: 0-3

Robert on CTO: Dominant performance until we eased up after the third. Kelty were poor and their defence contributed to each goal, but we had to score. Mckay’s opener was the pick, curling the ball in.

Over & Out

New Signing Oscar McIntyre went straight into the starting XI with Ross Millen, Calum MacLeod and Paul Allan missing from the midweek massacre at East Kilbride. David Wotherspoon also started but Billy Mckay was on the bench.

Both sides failed to qualify for the knockout stages despite Rovers trouncing the Caley Jags 5-1 at Stark's Park. Three goals in the first half from Dylan Easton (x2 one pen) and Jack Hamilton killed the contest with Wotherspoon getting a consolation before Easton completed his hat-trick once more from the spot and our misery was complete when Remi Savage knocked in an own goal off his back in stoppage time. Meh!

Raith Rovers, with nothing to play for were quick out of the blocks and were two ahead inside seven minutes. Dylan Easton with a quickfire brace, opening the scoring in the fourth minute with a half volley from the edge of the box and three minutes later converting a penalty after Longstaff upended Paul McMullan in the box. Liam Sole did put the ball in the net but was flagged offside after seventeen minutes. Oscar MacIntyre, not known for his goalscoring endeavours, went close from a tight angle but narrowly missed the target. The visitors were seeing plenty of the ball with half an hour gone, but it was the hosts who held a two goal advantage. They increased that ten minutes before the interval when Jack Hamilton scored a third shortly after Scott Brown went close. A Wotherspoon corner was whipped in and clipped a post, but that was as close as we came before Hamilton then fired a free kick wide with five minutes of the half remaining.

HALF TIME: 3-0 (ouch!)

No changes at the interval but Wotherspoon pulled a goal back on the hour off a Mathew Strachan cross from the left but five minutes later Easton completed his hat-trick from the spot again after handball by Savage. His day would get worse in stoppage time when the ball bounced off him into the net after Munro had parried an effort, although Raith are claiming it for Josh Mullin . Plenty of substitutions around the hour took the edge off the game with Raith in cruise control despite Wotherspoon's morsel of consolation on a day when both clubs left the competition. A couple of late bookings for the Thompson Twins. It must run in the family...

It would appear Remi Savage was at the end of the game for kicking the ball aggressively in the direction of the referee. However, similar to the ninety minutes, he missed. Not much he could have done about the penalty to be honest, but this will possibly mean he will miss the start of the league campaign against Kelty if it's seen as violent conduct. Otherwise it will mean he misses next League Cup game.

FULL TIME: 5-1 (sore one)

Caley 100 on CTO: A big feckin OUCH!

It's Raining Goals

Liam Sole started this one after a dazzling half hour display against St Johnstone and he made an immediate impact. He was booked in the 5th minute for alleged simulation. Billy Mckay turned on an Alfie Stewart ball but just missed the target early on. A trialist opened the scoring for the hosts after 17 minutes under a challenge from Danny Devine. Liam Sole blazed wide after a good run and Alfie Stewart was denied by Morrison before at the other end John Robertson clipped the post with an effort from distance that looped over the keeper before hitting woodwork. Inverness would not be denied though as Longstaff, Allan and Stewart combined brilliantly for Billy Mckay to nod in at the back post from Alfie's superb cross. Sole was then denied from a tight angle by keeper Morrison and with five minutes to the break dangerman Robertson went close at the opposite end. Almost another for Inverness but Alfie Stewart's shot bounced just wide after he was played through on goal but it was all square at the break in a game played at breakneck speed end to end.

HALF TIME: 1-1

No changes at the break, but a blistering start for the Caley Jags saw us take a <s>one</s>... <s>two</s>... <s>three</s>... <s>four</s>... five goal advantage. Firstly Paul Allan (48) squeezed his shot in from an impossible angle followed by Luis Longstaff (51) with a superb strike. A low Calum MacLeod shot ended up in the back of the net (54) before Longstaff (57) ended the ten minute scoring spree with a brilliant lob. Or so we thought.....Alfie Stewart added a sixth with a tremendous free kick into the corner from the right side of the box just after the hour. David Wotherspoon hit the post after coming on as a substitute for Liam Sole with Mathew Strachan's follow up saved by the keeper. A spate of substitutions followed with the tie secured and with a couple of minutes remaining John Robertson scored the second of the night for the hosts with a free kick. Still time for an effort or two at either end before the whistle as Inverness recorded an impressive away win to move into second in the Group F table

FULL TIME: 2-6

Raining Goals at the K Stadium

On CTO: ictchris summed up: Overall, a fantastic performance - the start of the second half we literally looked like we'd score every time we had the ball, and pretty much did just that. Alfie Stewart also had a great game, he was all over the place, looking dangerous and using the ball well every time he had it. Paul Allan covered so much ground and was available all the time as well. Liam Sole had a good start - his booking by the ref, former Ross County player Jamie McCunnie for diving was ridiculous.

Superb result for the Caley Jags away from home.

Last gasp Saints

Built like a heavyweight boxer, Uche Ikpeazu used his strength to turn and poke his shot behind Ross Munro to win this tie that was on a knife edge as we approached full time, just when we were all getting ready for a penalty kick shoot-out. St Johnstone had dominated possession in the opening 45' without threatening to run away with the game. Billy Mckay, looking suspiciously offside spurned an early chance for the hosts as the flag stayed down with keeper Toby Steward blocking the strikers effort from inside the box as he bore down on goal after slack defensive work by the visitors. Thereafter, the first half mainly belonged to St Johnstone's possession game but clear cut chances were at a premium. Best moment was Ross Munro acrobatically clawing away a header from Adama Sibideh and Jamie Gullan might have done better than blasting an effort over the bar as Saint's enjoyed the majority of the ball. After the break we looked more positive going forward, especially after the hour when Jordan Alonge and Liam Sole replaced Wotherspoon and Billy Mckay. Liam Sole is a bag of tricks with plenty of pace and he troubled the Perth defence, something we were unable to do often enough in the first half. Alfie Stewart saw his free kick from 25 yards tipped over the bar as we pressed for the opener. Desperate defending kept Sole at bay and just when penalties looked inevitable came the sucker punch from the big man. Sickener after we looked in control of the second half. Joe Chalmers almost sprung a surprise direct from the subsequent restart, the keeper back tracking to tip his on target shot from the halfway spot over the bar and Sole produced another dazzling run past dozens of players before his shot was deflected just wide. Alas, we just came up short in what turned into an entertaining game after a drab first half.

Full Time: 0-1

A tough one to take after competing well for long spells in the game. Sole has been the most exciting player I have seen up here for a loooong time. He has plenty tricks in his bag and almost scored a sensational goal after beating abput nine players before his strike was deflected just wide. Strength was what got Perth their goal, nothing else. Excited for the season ahead with Sole ready to rip up League1. Alonge looks quality as well.

Hiro: Not much between the teams. I think we played some decent stuff, unlike under our previous manager it looks like there's a point to what we're doing. Shocking goal to give away, Danny will be really disappointed with that defending, fell for Ikpeazu's only trick.

Huisdean: As for the game, we were good in parts and probably deserved a draw.
