Never realised robbos record was as good as that. Pele built the foundations and Brewster and Robbo have built upon that, so all deserve credit.

I wonder what the Brewster-Christie comparison will be like after 79 games each.  I hope Brew improves or :sillywave:

Bare statistics don't tell the whole story. Bearing in mind the very limited resourses at his disposal and the fact that his team improved year on year over the best part of a decade our best manager by a mile was Steve Paterson.

Robbo deserves a lot of credit, winning the First Division and Challenge Cup. Brewster improved on the fitness levels, something that Pele may have lacked.

The problem with soccerbase is that they sometimes get it wrong !!! For example, John Docherty was never manager of ICT on his own ! When caretaking duties were happening both he and CC took on a joint role and they omitted the first spell when Robbo left !

Steve Paterson laid all the groundwork for us getting into the SPL.

When he left we were top of the first division, playing fantasy football, and handing out some absolute drubbings. Robbo took us backwards in my opinion. We ended up finishing fourth after he took over, and only narrowly won the league ahead of Clyde the season after despite having a vastly superiour team and squad.

Nobody in Scottish football had a better record in the transfer market than Pele. Barry Robson - free, Dennis Wyness - free, Barry Wilson - free, Roy McBain - free, Grant Munro - free, Paul Ritchie - free, Paul Sheerin - free, Mike Teasedale - ?5,000, Ross Tokely - nominal fee, Bobby Mann - ?30,000....

Basically the entire squad that took us to the SPL were either rejects signed from the fringes, or bargain basement jobs.

Never before or since has an ICT manager done so much with so little.

If I were to pick who I thought was our best manager then I would have to agree with many and say Pele. As said above, he laid the groundwork for what followed and the managers who came after him have reaped the rewards in most cases.

However, arguing stats is always a circular argument as you can manipulate them to say whatever you want within reason .....

for example ......

If its on overall games (and you exclude caretaker managers) then

Baltacha won 32.50%

Paterson won 46.77%

Robertson won 53.66%

Brewster won 34.00% first time round

Christie won 33.33%

Brewster has won 41.67% second time round

Brewster has won 35.48% overall in both stints

so that would make it Robbo, Pele, Brewster, Christie, Baltacha in that order ....

if its on best ever seasons (and you exclude caretakers or seasons where the manager had less than 1/4 of the season) then

94/95 - Baltacha won 32.50%

02/03 - Paterson won 66.67%

03/04 - Robertson won 61.70%

05/06 - Christie won 41.18%

07/08 - Brewster won 41.67%

so that would make it Pele, Robbo, Brewster, Christie, Baltacha in that order .... 

if its on worst ever seasons (and you exclude caretakers or seasons where the manager had less than 1/4 of the season) then

94/95 - Baltacha won 32.50%

97/98 - Paterson won 38.64%

04/05 - Robertson won 28.57%

05/06 - Brewster won 32.00%

06/07 - Christie won 32.56%

so that would make the best Pele, Christie, Baltacha, Brewster, Robbo in that order ....

Pele's other differentiating factor is that he succeeded consistently at constantly improving levels with pretty much the same team.

Truly remarkable.

I'd loved to have seen him take us all the way.

He probably does too.

The resources and crowds we had under Pele were far superior to those of most of our rivals in the 2nd and 3rd divisions. We didn't have the kind of backing that Livingston, Gretna, and even County at times have had but we were still operating on the budget of and pulling in the crowds of a mid-table 1st division club.

I'd still go for Pele though. For the style of play, the wonderful cup runs and of course for the legacy he left behind. How many of Pele's signings in the lower division turned out to be SPL class?

I won't try and list them, but the answer is loads of them.

Steve Paterson laid all the groundwork for us getting into the SPL.

And we would not have secured promotion without Robbo.

And we may not have sustained SPL status without Brewster.

Overall (with the exception of the lottery manager) we've done pretty well.

He certainly has a good eye for a bargain, and the football at times was sublime. I specifically remember a home match against Queen of The South in the first division, I think we won 5-3, those were the days! :001:

id say pele too he was manager when i first started going to games and i loved the football we played with him. he was in my mind a good caley manager because the club was new so it was efectivly his club, there was no pressure of the club having a rich history. that was the complete opposite in aberdeen and thats why in my mind he struggled there.

It's true I tell ya.  He's marrying the local stable boy.

There can only be one - the mighty Pele. He took over at the helm when we were an average 3rd division side. Every season we have improved our league position under Pele, gaining promotions from 2 divisions, and he left when we were a good first division side. The improvement was remarkable year upon year. And who could doubt his shrewdness in the transfer market - Barry Robson and Bobby Mann, to name a few. Robbo really didn't have to do too much work to take us that stage further. The foundations were already built around the genius that is Steve Paterson!
