    Aberdeen V ICT - Preview

      Teaser Paragraph:
aberdeen_50Caley Thistle go to Pittodrie still chasing that all elusive first league win against Aberdeen.  Former manager Craig Brewster is sure to make an appearance on the pitch at some point, if not from the start.  Will Charlie Christie opt for the 3-4-3 he has been going on about, or has he just been messing with their heads.  Andrew Fraser provides the preview ahead of tomorrows action?

So, how did the SPL teams fair in the always exciting 3rd round of the Tennents Scottish Cup? Well, 6 teams progressed, and 2 got knocked with another 2 SPL teams to join them after replays are played. Let’s name and shame the winners and losers: Celtic managed to safely progress at the expense of third division Dumbarton. The SPL champions won 4-0 with no worries as they were 2 up after only 10 mins. Hearts also went through into the next round by the same score line against second division Stranraer. A Velicka hat trick stole the show for the Jambos. Motherwell came through a potential cup upset in a Lanarkshire derby with Airdrie United. The match finished 1-0 although Airdrie did create enough chances to win the match had they taken them. Falkirk also reached the next round at the expense of a lower league team, Berwick Rangers. Alan Gow featured for Falkirk, meaning that if he moves on in this transfer window, he will not be able to play in the Scottish Cup. Inverness CT ran out comfortable winners in what was also named a potential cup shock. The Highlanders taught the second division high flyers a football lesson by demolishing Stirling Albion 6-1. Five different goal scorers for Inverness CT definitely pleased the manager, and some of the goals were top notch. Dunfermline surprisingly progressed at the expense of Rangers in Iain Durrant’s sole game in charge. Dunfermline were at one point 3-0 up. The other shock of the round was when Kilmarnock were dumped out of the cup by Morton after leading by a goal. They eventually lost 3-1 and deservedly so by the sounds of it. Aberdeen and Hibs will have to replay after a 2-2 draw on Wednesday night and St Mirren and Dundee Utd will face each other next week for the right to play Inverness CT. PAST MEETINGS The teams have played a total of 12 times (8 League, 4 Cup) with 21 goals (6 Inverness CT, 15 Aberdeen) between them. Inverness CT: 0 wins (0 League, 0 Cup) Draws: 6 (5 League, 1 Cup) Aberdeen: 6 wins (3 League, 3 Cup) SOME PREVIOUS MEETINGS

08/08/1998 (League Cup 2nd Round) INVERNESS CT 0-3 Aberdeen: In the first game between the sides it was a Billy Dodds hat-trick that gave the top-flight side the win. Inverness CT was a 2nd Division side at the time.

20/02/2000 (Scottish Cup 4th Round) INVERNESS CT 1-1 Aberdeen: After the excellent achievements of beating Celtic at Parkhead in the previous round, the gift was a home-tie against Aberdeen which was screened live by Sky-Sports. Bobby Mann’s header looked as if it would have taken the Caley Jags through but Cato Gunviet scored with 10 minutes remaining meaning a replay was to be played. Both scorers got yellow cards during the match. Aberdeen won the replay 1-0.

16/10/2004 (SPL) INVERNESS CT 1-3 Aberdeen (Pittodrie): With all the media hype about Aberdeen playing away at Pittodrie was a joke before this game. Inverness were paying Aberdeen £30,000 for the day plus Aberdeen didn’t need to travel to Inverness. And plus they still got the victory thanks to 2 penalties. Roy McBain got the goal for Caley Thistle which was a great goal.

FACTS BETWEEN THE TEAMS • All League meetings between the teams have taken place in the SPL. • Aberdeen are unbeaten in all fixtures between the teams. • The biggest win in the fixture was when Aberdeen won 3-1 on 16/4/2004 away to us at Pittodrie! McBain scored Inverness’s solo goal. • If Inverness CT beat Aberdeen on Saturday, I believe they will have beaten every team in Scottish Football. • Inverness CT are currently on a unbeaten in 2007. • The ex-manager of Inverness CT, Craig Brewster, is likely to feature against his old side at the age of 40.

PLAYERS TO WATCH Dennis Wyness (ICT): The ex-Aberdeen player has finally found the back of the net after around 10 months without a league goal. He scored on the 2nd January which is almost 11 months since his last league goal against Dundee Utd in February last year. The goal was a cracker, as was his cup goal against Stirling last weekend. Lets all hope that Dennis continues scoring in every game this year when we face Aberdeen. Although, will it be a 3-man attack?

Squad: Mark Brown, Jonathon Smith, Michael Fraser, Darren Dods, Stuart Soane, Ross Tokely, Guy Kerr, Richard Hastings, Stuart McCaffrey, Stuart Golabek, Grant Munro, John Rankin, Ian Black, Roy McBain, Zander Sutherland, Alan Morgan, Barry Wilson, Russell Duncan, Craig Dargo, Gary McSwegan, Rory McAllister, Dennis Wyness, Graham Bayne Injured: Richie Hart Liam Keogh Suspended: Nobody.
