Inverness CT -V- Ayr United - Preview

    Almost there with Ayr...

It's Matchday 3 and Ayr United are the visitors to an almost back to normality Caledonian Stadium with up to 5,000 fans allowed entry to the ground. Where will we find all these extra fans? The game kicks off at 3:00pm on Saturday with masks almost a thing of the past as covid restrictions ease somewhat. Hospitality suite is open for this one, time to put on a show.

matchdayinfo1-1024x517.pngInverness are one of three unbeaten sides in the Championship after opening wins over Arbroath and Raith Rovers. The point against Rovers was hard earned and deserved, but it took a wonderful strike from Roddy MacGregor to win the match. We sit third in the table behind promoted Partick Thistle and relegated Kilmarnock.

Here's a quick guide on what the guidelines allow as the stadium opens out for the Ayr United game. Welcome back!

Roddy's goal is well worth another look

Ayr United come North on the back of a decent performance against Dundee United in the League Cup, taking the Tannadice side to extra time and penalties before losing the shoot-out 4-3. Their Championship form shows they have one point from their opening two fixtures. They opened up with a derby defeat to Killie and followed that up with a home draw against Arbroath, coming from two down to earn a point thanks to a strike by Tomi Adeloye and a late goal from Mark McKenzie. So some positives for David Hopkin to take from that despite only showing one point for their efforts to date.

So, a decent record against Ayr United, just one home defeat in twenty games. Stewart Kean scored the only goal at the Caledonian Stadium to give Ayr United a 0 - 1 win. John Robertson made his home debut as Inverness manager and It was Dennis Wyness' 100th game in a row with Barry Robson making his 150th appearance. Some memorable games against Ayr, the 7 - 0 at Somerset Park a particular highlight as the promotion party got into full swing. Some team we had then though. Ahhh, nostalgia, it's not what it used to be.

    Other fixtures this weekend

Raith Rovers V Dunfermline (Friday - abandoned lighting issues)

    Arbroath v Partick Thistle

    Hamilton v Kilmarnock

Morton v Queen of the South

Shane Sutherland is our first monthly winner of the PotY awards. He has put in some workmanlike performances and rounded off July with the vital opening goal of our League campaign against Arbroath. Not just any old goal, but a touch of class with a dinked finish from the edge of the box in an otherwise dour struggle. Manny Duku is second with Tom Walsh in third place.

    Latest Team News

Inverness have had an extra week to shake off the niggles and Billy Mckay, Lewis Jamieson Sean Welsh and Aaron Doran will benefit from that. However, Wallace Duffy is still sidelined and Anthony McDonald will be a doubt. All of our graduates that signed on this season are out on loan, so that could leave us a little thin on the ground with little defensive cover.

On the face of it, Ayr look to be weaker than they were last season. Out went the likes of Dario Zanatta, Luke McCowan, Sam Roscoe, Josh Todd and of course Tom Walsh who returned to Inverness. In comes Tomi Adeloye from Barnet and a raft of Morton players, no doubt connected to David Hopkin now being the Ayr manager. They have also acquired a couple of decent loans in defender John Maxwell from Rangers and forward Jonathon Afolabi from Celtic. They still look to be short of where they want to be but put up a determined performance against Dundee United in the League Cup, so write them off at your own peril.

These guys are great.  Have a listen to The Wyness Shuffle

I am looking forward to the game at the stadium tomorrow which will be a change from watching it on the screen.

Me too. With tonight's Fife derby abandoned due to floodlight failure, an opportunity to put further 3 points between us and two pre season tips for promotion as well as to stay joint leaders at the very least.

Let's hope for a large and enthusiastic crowd and an entertaining game.

According to a Raith official it was actually due to wifi failure, which must be a first! This led to the lighting in 2 of the stands going off which is a safety issue. A floodlight problem was resolved before kickoff and they stayed on for the full 13 minute duration of the match.

Really looking forward to being back in my own seat, first time since we beat Queen of the South 3-1 on a windy night a lifetime ago.

Having seen the Peterhead, Stirling and Raith games in the stadium and the Arbroath one on the livestream, I’m  hopeful we maintain our recent form. I’d take a 1-0 win but hope for a win with a great performance and a few goals.

Dunno how a Wi-Fi issue can wipe out power to the Alarms, the P.A. and Lighting all at once.

Fron reading a couple of reports, it looks like the problems in the stands were due to power supply failure. The wifi problem affected their electronic ticketing system - they couldn't scan QR codes, and still had hundreds of home fans outside of the ground.

The most constructive thing now would be for Raith to send a full report on what happened to all other clubs, and for all clubs to check their own vulnerability to such risks.

Absolute diabolical que for the food. 20 mins so far. It's now round past the corner of the West Stand.

Near the front finally and no hot food left. What a shambles we are. 😆

Another 1-0 win. We deserved it, but Ayr made a game of it. Duku should have scored early on which may have made it an easier afternoon.

I thought the goal was put in by Walsh (or at least the ball in by Duku came off him) but see the BBC gave it as an own goal.

Nice to have three clean sheets, but we did have a couple of comic moments at the back again.

Carson was my top pick, closely followed by MacGregor. Good to see Welsh back too. His calmness helped when we were closing the game out.

Nine points out of nine and a top of the table clash at Killie to look forward to. Let’s enjoy it whilst we can.

I and 5 golfing buddies were up on our annual golfing break last week, and were able to fit in this match.  We treated ourselves to the hospitality package in the Highlander suite.  Worth every penny.  From 12.30 right through to about 17.45 we were royally treated by commercial manager, Keith Haggart, and his staff.  Starting with a look at my wall tile, recently puchased as a gift for me, in the tunnel "wall of fame", followed by champagne reception, 3 course lunch, free bar before, after and at half time, everyone treated us brilliantly.

There were chats from Keith, followed by Robbo and Scott Gardner, and after the match an interview between Keith and Mark Ridgers.  Lots of photo opportunities, including with Robbo (who looked and sounded really well).

All in all, a great experience, definitely the highlight of our 5 day trip,  and the 1-0 win was a bonus too.   Good to see almost 50 people enjoying this experience, which can't be bad for the club coffers.  So, if you have a birthday, or other special occasion coming up, I would firmly recommend that you treat yourself and give this a try. You won't be disappointed. I'm already looking forward to giving it another go.

Sounds awesome, good that we're giving a high quality experience again after the Yvonne Crook era shambles. I fancied booking it with my daughter who's a huge fan and has never seen hospitality before but 80 odd quid for a 10 year old was just way too much.

Glad you enjoyed yourself and as you say some money for club.

I really wish theyd now concentrate on the service the ordinary fans receive? It appears that getting through turnstiles and then a pie and coffee was challenging on Saturday to say the least! For instance you cannot buy a black coffee just a sweetened latte. Not good enough and also Id have thought another route to take money in.

When I got to the front of the que after over 30 mins, as there was max 2 people serving the entire North Stand. You couldn't get any coffee except a 'latte', only soft drink was water or Fanta (though the first 2 kids who were with me got Coke then it run out), no pies of any kind, no sausage rolls, no burgers or hot dogs (though more pies were cooking), no crisps left except Cheese & Onion, no chocolate bars left except KitKat. If I wasn't there with 3 kids I'd have given up when the 2nd half kicked off.
