  1. Fabulous win and what an open competition this has become! Publicly, most of the managers will give it the old 'want a home game' or 'take who we get as you've got to beat them eventually' line. But privately, and naturally, everybody wants Spartans/Berwick!! The draw on Monday is crucial - we're 'due' a home tie - but it rarely works that way! Just had a look at some other fans forums and a recurring theme is that these clubs don't want Celtic or ICT! We're in such a good position on two front's for securing an historic European spot. Obviously, we can achieve that aim by finishing in the top 3 but the cup permutations will become clearer after Monday's draw. If Celtic do go on to win the Premiership...and progress to the Cup final, their opponents in the final, win or lose, will get a Euro spot. I'm getting carried away and should know better! So, for balance, and as a reminder to myself that there's much work ahead, our most recent Scottish Cup outcomes against the likely (I'll go for Dundee United and Rangers) remaining teams are: Celtic - Lost Hibernian - Lost Queen of the South - Lost Rangers* - Lost *arguably not played Spartans/Berwick - Never met either club Dundee United - Lost Falkirk - Lost

  4. Richie Byrne has now signed for Horsham, a level 8, Ryman League club. As mentioned in a previous post by Renegade, Byrne is a fitness instructor but at only 33, he still likes to play football part-time. http://www.wscountytimes.co.uk/sport/horsham-fc/richie-byrne-brings-professional-skills-to-horsham-campaign-1-6564578#.VNTkVyxner8.twitter

  5. Thick freezing fog across Maryhill just now. Hopefully it lifts for the afternoon. For those of you who like omens, at the moment it's very similar to the day in the 1st Division season where we lost at Firhill then went on a 13-month unbeaten away run. Would take the same run again now, obviously, but I do fancy going further in the cup this year.

  7. I'm actually surprised at this topic tbh. Considering all media that is aimed at fans is done on a voluntary basis I think we are well served? The youth and community dept have their own FB page btw so if you follow this I think you'll find some of what you're looking for? I'm sure someone from the media team will post in reply in due course but given the small numbers and time constraints I think we are on a par with or better than the rest of the premiership?

  8. Up until this season, then if the cup winners had qualified for the Chanpions League, then the cup runners up would get a Europa League spot, which IIRC was the lowest available. From this season the rules have changed, and the runners up cannot qualify, and the place would go to the league positions, 2nd gets the cup winner spot (which happens this season the be the one place in the 2nd qualifying round, the other 2 places are both 1st qualifying round), and everything else moves down one place. Likewise if 2nd or 3rd wins the cup, then they have the cup winner spot and the other spot(s) move down one place. Info obtained through Wikipedia, as I cannot find anything specific on the UEFA, SFA or SPFL sites, however I had heard similar elsewhere.

  9. Another goal of the season? That's nearly half a dozen now, by my count. Yogi's quite fair isn't he - he wants a soft draw in the next round, then glory glory. Only 3 SPL teams left, here we go.

  12. Aerosol Day It's a week where some olde relics were dug up at Drumnadrochit, and I don't mean Johndo, Johnboy, Scarlet Pimple and Mantis, and it's almost to the day of that famous Scottish Cup win over Celtic that Inverness travel to Glasgow to do battle in the Cup once more. The task this time is just as daunting as we play the team that has turned us over twice already this season. It's Nemesis time as we go to Firhill to take on the Maryhill Magyars. Maryhill Magyars I hear you youngsters say. That name was attached to the side in the heyday of Ferenc Puskas, the great Hungarian footballer of the fifties and along with the Harry Wraggs is one of the finest nicknames in Scottish Football. It would appear that when they play us, they revert to type and have dished out two Goulashings scoring seven goals and even had the luxury of missing a penalty. We have played Partick five times in The Cup, two of those being replays, and have only progressed to the next round once, a 3-0 victory in January 2009. In saying that, Partick have only won one of these games over the allotted time when a Scott Paterson goal on a horrendously wet night in March 2002 saw them into the draw for the Semi-Final. Looking more like a member of Oasis, he scored a fantastic free kick from thirty yards to win the game for the Jags and set up a clash with a now reduntant side called Rangers. Our last outing saw us struggle on the heavy turf at the Caledonian Stadium, adding to the Billy Mckay hangover which resulted in a frustrating draw with Ross County in the Highland derby. Partick fared even worse, going down 1-0 to local rivals St Mirren in an equally scrappy affair at Firhill. That results show Inverness sitting level on points with Aberdeen having played a game more and Partick some twenty two points behind us in ninth place. Recent results in the league will tell us that we have won five of our last six games. Partick have only one win and two draws out of six. The smart money would go on Inverness you would think. However, the form book goes out the window now as the Cup is a whole different ball game as they say. The transfer window came and went and Inverness were only window shopping it would seem, the only activity being Billy Mckay's outward bound trip to Wigan. Partick were proactive in the market and added Rangers defender Ryan Finnie until the end of the season. Calum Booth the Hibs midfielder was also added to the squad but the big scoop was the re-signing of Lyle Taylor on loan for the season. He scored 7 goals in 20 games for the Harry Wraggs last season and will be a major boost for them. Nathan Ecclestone has left the Firhill building by mutual consent. Inverness' Dean Brill is unlikely to be risked after his knee injury and Ryan Esson will continue in goal. the back four will be the same, but it's in midfield and attack where we have many options, depending on the strategy employed by Yogi. Marley Watkins looks likeliest to continue in the strikers role, and the fans would like to see Ryan Christie as his assistant. Danny Williams put in a good shift last weekend and should retain his starting berth. Tansey and Draper will provide the steel, and the rest is up for debate, with Ross, Doran and Vincent in the running for the providers position. Partick are keeping team selections close to their chest, but they do have the knack of beating us, so maybe they won't change much from the start. However, Lyle Taylor could get a game, which is more than the injured Sean Welsh or the suspended Jordan McMillan. So, an entertaining cup game to look forward to as Inverness continue with life after Billy. But wait, there's a downside to all this. Willie Collum is back after his break from refereeing proper games. He was stood down for a few weeks due to his incompetence, but will be in charge tomorrow. I believe they are also introducing the invisible white aerosol spray used in the world cup. I wonder if he sprays himself would he disappear. Just a thought. tm4tj prediction:- Strange as it may sound, but I'm taking Inverness to get into the next round, maybe with the aid of a replay up North. If we can cope with Partick's high pressing game and feed Watkins, then it's possible to get a result. A word of warning though. This is just my opinion, so don't rush down to the bookies and put loads of money on an away win.

  13. It's a pity our Twitter doesn't cover Development League games. Even if we're the home team, any line-ups, scorers and updates are to be found on the opposition's Twitter!

  15. I know what the OP is talking about....it's the additional "behind the scenes" stuff. Whilst we do want to do more on that front, it's time consuming and outwith available resources at the moment....and every time I free up a bit of time or resource, something more important has a habit of filling the void....but we'll get there. (keep an ear out for the relaunch of the podcast...soon). With that being the situation, then whatever we do has to tick 2 out of 3 boxes. Those boxes being "Fun", "Useful" & "Informative". People also have to keep in mind (and in fairness most people do get it) that whilst players/manager could be considered "public figures", they are entitled to their own space and privacy....even when in/around the stadium. In my experience, when you demonstrate that you respect that fact, then people are more willing to work with you on the stuff of real value or let you "intrude" a bit behind the scenes and capture some of those extras and bend the 2 out of 3 rule by doing something purely for chits & giggles.

  19. The last part of that interview about the personality of signing targets is interesting, and something we tend to not think about as fans when saying who we should sign. It's often said that the great team spirit is a factor behind us punching above our weight and you can understand the manager being careful not to spoil that by bringing in a bad apple. So you might get a good striker who is available and affordable, but if for example he's had 18 clubs and got kicked out of his most recent one because of personality clashes, he's less likely to be what Hughes is looking for. These character references might make it harder for us to make a signing, but you can see where the manager is coming from.

  21. There are dozens of examples of top players starting out in one position and transitioning to a completely different role (Bale, Henry, Ronaldo, Mascherano, Matthaus - just off the top of my head. Even just looking at our own club - Jim Calder started life as a centre forward, but ended up being one of our best ever goalkeepers. Dennis Wyness started as a midfielder, but ended up being our all time top goal scoring centre forward. Roy McBain started as a winger, but ended up being one of our best ever holding midfielders. Ross Tokely started as a striker, but ended up being one of our best ever right backs. Graeme Shinnie started as a left back, but also excels at right back and central midfield. We're too obsessed with categorizing footballers in this country. We have plenty of talented attacking players with pace, skill, vision and an eye for goal - all the attributes required for a centre forward. There's no reason whatsoever why Marley Watkins, Ryan Christie, Aaron Doran, Nick Ross or James Vincent can't play up front. We should focus on footballing ability, not artificial labels. Thankfully we have a manager who looks beyond narrow 'specialist' positions and looks to be trying to develop well-rounded footballers with full-spectrum knowledge of the game. I hope he succeeds. Let's give him a chance.

  22. Sorry to get into this DD, but having spoken to Yogi after almost every game of his tenure thus far, he hasn't changed his philosophy one jot. It's simple - if we keep the ball the opposition can't hurt us. It's also pretty effective, we've scored a lot of second half goals as teams tire after being moved around so much. Under TB, we would increasingly put long diagonal balls into the channels for crosses but there were times when it really didn't work. Now, that ball is played into those channels effectively. In terms of change from TB to JH, the transition was quite painful as the style of game was changed radically - hence that "slump" at the end of last season. The first bit of that was to teach players that they were good enough to play this type of game ( and not hang them out to dry for their mistakes) and then get them to do it. They never had that type of approach under TB. Look at Hughes's interviews and see how often he uses terms like "teach" "educate" "learn" What you are seeing now is a group who have outgrown TB's legacy and surpassed it with some ease. This is due to Hughes & Latapy. Please bear in mind that the players you refer to were identified in England's lower leagues by Steve Marsalla for their low price and potential and it's under Hughes that they are realising it and increasing their value. This is no more Butcher's team than anyone else's - it's Caley Thistle's team but it's Hughes that is taking it forward.

    • Queens Park 0-1 Inverness CT - Report
Massive: Just under 1500 fans rattled around inside the national stadium for the proverbial six-pointer at the bottom of the table with Inverness looking to get out of the play-off place and Queens one point ahead at the start of the game. In a tense first half Cammy Harper scored a stunning free kick after Cillian Sheridan had handled 25 yards out. Boom! That's how it ended despite QP upping their game in the second period as Inverness kept them at bay.

Hampden Calling: Carragher is now a doubt after feeling his hamstring. Other than that not much has changed apart from Remi Savage, who has not recovered after he got a boot in the face from Cammy Kerr. Apparently Kerr's boot is OK but Savage is suffering from minor concussion and will miss the next couple of games. Maybe that was Kerr ensuring he gets a game this weekend.

    • Inverness CT 2-1 Arbroath - Report
Smokies Kippered: On a blustery day more akin to AA Milne and Winnie the Pooh, Arbroath and Inverness battled it out to see who would get the final nails hammered into their coffins. Arbroath were in the last chance snug in the last chance saloon, whilst Inverness have one foot in the grave. I don't believe it! Arbroath tried everything, they even took their own wind with them. However, they had Murray, Bird and Slater on from the start but O'Brien missed out. Zak Delaney also started for the Red Lichties. A bright opening spell saw Alex Samuel denied twice inside five minutes. Once by a combination of Max Boruc and his crossbar, the second by Boruc on his own as Samuel got his shot away from inside the box. Wallace Duffy got the goal we deserved on the interval as he drove across the keeper from the right side of the box to put us in ahead at the break. Leighton McIntosh restored parity on the hour as he drilled home from eighteen yards, but Alex Samuel won the points with a late strike to all but relegate ten man Arbroath who had Ricky Little sent off.

It's Now or Never: That's what Elvis used to say. We are in deep trouble up to our necks with no signs that we can turn this around. Defeat to Arbroath could be the final nail in our coffin with only fifteen points available to us ahead of this game. The play-offs are looking more likely by the minute, but it's not beyond the realms of possibilty that automatic relegation is still an option should Arbroath beat us on Saturday. With the long suffering fans rapidly losing faith in Big Dunc, it's crunch time as Arbroath head North to the venue they won at the last time they were here. Sadly they come to the Caledonian Stadium off the back of a 2-1 midweek defeat to Airdrie, and we could all but relegate them on Saturday with a win. However, that's nothing to gloat about as we could be next...

    • Partick 1-0 Inverness CT - Report
Big Trouble Down the Dump: Billy Mckay was back in the starting XI along with Samson Lawal with Pepple dropping to the bench and Shaw out for the season. Both teams had seven on the bench with Roddy MacGregor getting a rare seat. Scott Robinson scored the only goal of the game just before the break. Inverness were reduced to ten men when Cammy Kerr was sent off just after an hour. Despite creating more opportunities, the points just evaded us.

      Meh!
