  1. I was told that the Waitrose (John Lewis) malt whisky was actually a good single malt from a well known distillery too, so there are bargains around. I'd recommend a book by Iain Banks called 'Raw Spirit' which is a very entertaining account of his travels round all of Scotland's distilleries. His favourite dram, surprisingly to me, was one of the rarer Glenfiddichs, and not from one of the more exotic distilleries
  2. CB I've been using that story, or a variation of it, with longer Burns quotations, as an icebreaker at the start of speeches I've done at Burns suppers, for the past 2 or 3 years now. And very well it goes down too, making the audiences much more amenable to the slightly more serious stuff which follows.
  3. Inverness has a cathedral without a spire, possibly the only city in the UK like this. (I wait to be corrected if anyone knows of any other). I didn't introduce Police into the equation, so can't help you there.
  4. OK , I'll take pity on you, the tune is "Highland Cathedral". I'll never forget David Sole leading the Scots rugby team out to it, in the form of a slow march, before beating England at Murryfield to win the Grand Slam back in 1990.
  5. Well done ActionMan, you've clearly got it from what you said. We'll keep the others guessing for just now, especially FW, who's obviously enthralled with this thread.
  6. OK, here goes, - a wee hint - Inverness has one, but incomplete! Dah da da da da, da da dah, da da Dah da da da da da da dah, da da Dah da da da da, da da dah, da da Dah da da da da da da da da da
  7. I too remember having my tonsils out as a lad and being promised ice cream as a 'reward'. All I got was semolina pudding! Also I remember being 'put to sleep' for the operation with a pill of some sort crushed in a spoonful of blackcurrent jam. To this day I cannot face blackcurrent jam without the horrible taste of that pill coming back to me.
  8. I believe the Boar Stone was moved by Highland Regional Council about 15 years ago, to protect it from weather and vandalism. I think it now rests in the HLC Headquarters grounds.
  9. You get picky about grammar. It should be " you know you're old when?"
  10. Could be a good move for Dods at this stage in his career. I've been trying to work out who the nearest team to me is that Barnsley will play, so that I can go with my Caley scarf etc and support him, should he go. I'd be happy with Caff as replacement. I don't think you can turn the clock back and get Bobby Mann back, much as I admired him when he was wuth us. However, I hope we are all jumping to false conclusions and that Dods stays with us as a vital part of our drive to maintain a top 6 place.
  11. We've had so-called arrangements with English clubs in the past, eg Sheffield United, which have come to absolutely nothing, as far as I can see, so I'm inclined to think that this will be a non event.
  12. I know the lack of atmosphere at home games has been discussed on here many times, but Saturday was the worst I've seen. I had three English friends with me and they simply could not believe it. I agree with those who say a better announcer would help. Surely it would be worth investing in someone more professional, (perhaps with a DJ background) who could help motivate the crowd before the game and at half time. Also, how about information about our youth team and reserves (results, fixtures etc).
  13. Changing dates is a real problem for us exiles who have to make our travel arrangements weeks in advance. Fortunately I wasn't intending to come for the Aberdeen game, but I am up for the Dunfermline game with three friends. Our flights, hotels, car hire has been booked for at least two months, so if that game had been moved at only a few weeks notice, we would have been well screwed, and out of pocket by several hundred pounds. I don't know what can be done about it, but it certainly doesn't make it easy for us long didtance supporters
  14. I too am coming up for my first home game of the season, and will be in the Innes before Dunfermline game. I'll be accompanied by three English friends, none of whom have even been to Scotland before! So be gentle on them if you hear their funny accents.
  15. Have you noticed how well he is doing at Wycombe Wanderers? I've not seen them this season, despite living only a few miles from them, but a pal of mine supports them and tells me Lambert's got them playing good attacking football. Despite his Celtic and Livingston past, its good to see a Scottish manager doing well down here.
  16. We have a perfectly good left back in Hastings. He was solid most of last season. Can't understand why he wasn't in the X1 v St Mirren
  17. People, usually pundits, who use the term "its a big ask" - really gets up my nose!
  18. Does anyone know where we are re trialling this yougster? I've been asking around my local Reading FC forum. Everyone says he was extremely promising, and quick, but had terrible luck with injuries. Sounds to me as if he might be a decent prospect, if he is now injury free. Everyone wished him well, which I thought was a good sign.
  19. Suspicious mind. I obviously rattled your cage in supporting another poster's criticism of your hero, Zidanne. However, I find your 'closet bluenose' remark offensive. I'll overlook the 'institution' barb, as I suppose that was an attempt at humour. You know absolutely nothing about me so I would be obliged, if in future you disagree with one of my posts, you keep your replies to the facts and not personalise them
