I watch a shed load of films with the misses so though it would be an idea for people to rate the recent films they have watched so others know whether to watch them or not!!

say marks out of five and a brief explanation of what the film is about!!

Most importantly NO SPOILERS!!

"The Long Weekend" *

just another American pie wannabe film... not even worth watching for the scantly clad women and that's saying something!

Don't waste your money!!

"Lucky Number Sleven"****

Best film I've watched in a while, bit like an American snatch witha quality cast and some good one-liners!

well worth getting out on DVD!!

"The Hills Have Eyes"*****

Quality!! bit like a realistic Evil Dead (if that's possible).... caaked my pants on a couple of occasions! Superb, I'll probably buy it at some point

next...

"Alien Autopsy" ***

Ant and Dec back to their PJ and Duncan style acting... worth renting

"Derailed" **and a half

Clive Owen is a cracking actor and the film has generally got a decent cast but the story is dragged out and predictable.... would wait until it goes onto TV

"The Worlds Fastest Indian" ****

If you've lost all faith in humanity then watch this and it will bring a smile back to your face.... Anthony Hopkins is brilliantbit of a dodgy accent though.  It was a bit to nicey nicey for me but a good film in it's own right!!

" Kung Fu Hustle " *****

Excellent kick 'em up movie with enough laughs to fill several lesser films.

Dont watch in English ( American dub ) version though - use Cantonese with English subs.

" Bubba Ho-Tep " ***

Elvis didn't actually die, he's living in an out of the way retirement home, along with JFK - who is actually black...now they've got to deal with an ancient mummy.... - really you couldn't make it up!! Worth watching if you can find it...three stars here but depending on your take it could be one or four!

Don't know why but at the moment i find myself going through all my dvds. Forgot how good Guy Ritches films 'Snatch' and ' Lock, Stcok and Two Smoking Barrels' are. If your into that sort of London gangsters type movie and haven't saw these two then well worth it. Haven't seen the third though, 'Revolver', anyone saw it?

Don't think I have, but on the same crime/underworld theme "Layer Cake"**** is another good one, although a bit old now, nevertheless a great plot, well directed and a masterful performance by the 'new' james bond guy...can't remember his name...definitely worth a viewing!

All 3 named gangster films are excellent... snatch probably my favourite another couple for u are

"Love, Honour and Obey"**** and a half

Jude Law, Jonny Lee Miller, Ray Winston, Denise Van Outen and a rake of other British heads.... funny and entertaining, jsut you wait and see what Denise Van Outen can do with a cucumber :010:

and

"Gangsta No 1"****

Disturbing but class.. well worth a watch

3 dvd's I go out the other day

"Adam and Paul"****

Irish film about to heroin adicts... sounds bad I know but trust me such a funny film

"Junebug"**

Yawn!!  It's got the guy out of the OC and the bad boy from Goal innit but story drags and isn't very interesting. I wouldn't bother

"Capote"****

excellent film, would be a classic if capote's voice wasn't so annoying.  Basically the plot's about the book "In Cold Blood" which Capote wrote about a farm in america where a family were killed by 2 bad guys.  The film explains how Capote wrote the book and how he bonded with one of the killers.  worth getting out

V for Vendetta - ****.  Watched this last night, excellent movie, very good adaptation from the original graphic novel.  Very well shot and highlights some very interesting themes that are very valid in todays society.  I would recommend this movie to anyone, it even managed to suck my missus in, which is a huge departure from her normal fayre of 'Legally Blonde' etc!  :015:

Dead Mans Shoes...caught a wee bit of this on film4 the other night , gritty British drama , didn't catch much of the beginning but it ends up basically a one man vengeance deathfest , very unstylised , brilliant ' nut job ' acting by the hero/villain as he terrorizes his targets - Id certainly watch it again  ( in fact its a defo ) and as its film4 it'll probably be repeated every other night.

"Capote"****

Philip Seymour Hoffman captured Capote perfectly including the voice of the guy, an excellent film and well worth the oscar that he won for it.... Another worthy film to watch with this actor is "Owning Mahoney" **** which is a true story about Canada's largest bank fraud - about a bank manager who stole millions of $$$ to feed his casino gambling addiction.

Suprised no-one has yet mentioned "Crash"*****, a truly superb film that shows how a group of diverse people's lives cross and intertwine in LA.

Also thought "X-Men: Last Stand" (a.k.a. X3) *** was a pretty good film. Vinnie Jones was cast perfectly as Juggernaut and the film doesnt take itself too seriously which is good. Besides, Halle Berry is gorgeous  :004:

If you want a good 'art' film, then "City of God"***** is great viewing - about two young boys growing up in the violence of Rio with one becoming a gangster and another becoming a photographer. Again, this is based on a true story.

Going to see Pirates of the Carribean 2 this weekend so hopefully that will live up to the hype.

I watched crash, not sure what to make of it, good atmospheric stuff, lots of good acting and direction - i just couldn't figure out what the deal was ,  it does  show how paths cross but i didn't think there was that much of a story...I might point out that i was a little bit drunk at the time though. I likened the experience of watching it to watching Lost In Translation - excellent direction , really good acting, and although you know the situation which is taking place you just feel there must be more to it, and personally speaking , i was waiting for something (more) to happen.

Aaaaaahhh finally some good films are mentioned

dead.jpg

"Dead Man Shoes"**** is a master class in british film, gritty and raw but so original.  When he attacks the boy wearing his mask and swinging an axe you know he means business.  My favourite point of the film is when the group of 5 or 6 bad guys come rolling up in a banged up old VW beatle with the tunes banging..... quality!!

"City of God" would possibly get ***** from me aswell.  I've always had the opinion that the best films are made by how bad the bad guys are and Lil Zane is pure evil!! So many great characters throughout the film and the way it is shot is beautiful.. absolute cracking film!

if you don't mind your subtitles another few films worth getting out are "Das Experiment", "Run Lola Run" and "La Haine"

"Das Experiment"***** is a german film about an experiment (funnily enough) where a group of volunteers are split in half.  1 half become the guards and the others become the prisoners, there is a power struggle and it all gets messy but probably in my all time top 10.... well worth watching!

"La Haine"***** French film about their version of the ghetto where a self proclaimed hardman comes across a gun and has to figure out how tough he really is..... class!!

"Run Lola Run"**** clever film about the different options the main character has when he gets mixed up with a bad crowd and the only person that can help him is his girlfriend (Lola).  Lola is played by the main female character in "Bourne Identity"(can't remember her name).... again well worth watching

"Old School*****" is on BBC 1 just now, Vince Vaughan, Will Farrell, very funny!!

Watched "V for Vendetta"**** last night - not sure what to make of it. The script is decent enough and the terrorist/anti-hero who is actually the hero in the film has many flaws like seeking revenge on all those who were responsible for his treatment in early life rather than just the positive ideology that would be to 'overthrow the oppressive and corrupt goverment'  ..... shades of Orwell/1984 and the ending is kinda feeble, but overall, I enjoyed it.

"Basic Instinct 2"**

It gets 2 for the pure and simple reason Sharon Stone is hardly in a scene with her clothes on!! But my advice would be to just go out and buy a porn because it would probably have a better story line. Pesh!!

"Hostel"***

Seemed more like an american scary movie than a Tarantino film, again a lot of lovely naked ladies at the start.  It was all very predictable and the casting was caak (apart from the lovely naked ladies).  Watchable!

"V for Vendetta"****

Yeh have to agree with all that's been said above...  really good film with an interesting plot

"Pirates of the Carribean 2 - Dead Mans Chest" *** Only 3 stars because of the ending.

We know from all the pre-release hype that there is to be another film in the series - starring Keith Richards as Jack Sparrow's dad - but even if we werent aware of that, it is clear from the ending that this is the middle part of a trilogy - much of what went on in the first film is referred to and even the ending with the replacement captain would have gone over your head if you havent seen film 1. The ending is also very abrupt so it doesnt stand alone as its own film .... and that lets it down. Having said that, the effects are quite good - the captain with the Octopus beard, the Kraken, and such like .... Johnny Depp's stoned/pished Jack Sparrow is a good character once again but the two witless pirates from the first film are even funnier.

I saw the first film and looked forward to this one, and there is no doubt i will need to see the third one in a year's time, if only to complete the story !!

Watched Brick and Adam & Paul the other night, not much to report there I'm afraid - two rambling movies without much cohesion or plot , although they both involve hard drugs Adam & Paul could be forgiven for having no direction as the two leads?! are the wastoid H heads in the title of the film... whereas Brick had a few laughs and one liners I felt there was little else to redeem it.

Pants.

I can see what you're sayin about "Adam & Paul", doesn't have much direction to the storyline but I thought it was so tragic that it was funny.... maybe just my sence of humour!!

"Brick" IMO is one of the cleverist films I've seen in an age, there is a lot of dialogue but thought it was very original & well acted would possibly get ***** from me.  Saying that, I tried to get the mrs to watch it and she fell asleep after 20mins :015:

"Confetti" **** British comedy about 3 couples competing to have the perfect wedding, very funny.  If you have a spaced/peep show sence of humour

"Garden State" ***** From the genius that is Zach Braff (main character in scrubs), he wrote, starred in & directed the film.  Great performances from him and Natalie Portman.  The film has been out for a while now but one of my mates recently recomended it and I wasn't disappointed.  All about a guy who looses his way after being away from his home town for 9 years but is called back suddenly because of his mother's death and "finds himself".... honestly you have to watch this film!!

Have alook for "Eight Below" based on a true story... {not Pererheed v Forfar though}  :015:

It's got a story line, so women might enjoy it, but lots of action as well so it's a blokes movie

too, 'specially if yer a dog man.

Check it out, well worth the shoe leather down to "Bl*ck B*stard Video".

Canada Bob.

Went to see "Last King of Scotland" *****  and if Forest Whitaker does not take the Oscar for his portrayal of Ugandan president/dictator Idi Amin then there is no justice.

The film follows a fictional (Scottish) character (an amalgam of real ones if you believe some internet reviews) who becomes Amin's personal doctor and is blissfully unaware of the dictator's methods of rule. Slowly he becomes aware of and witnesses the atrocities that happen before eventually becoming the potential victim of them himself.

Whitaker is outstanding in the role and when real footage of Amin is shown at the end, you have to wonder if its Whitaker or Amin !!!

TRIVIA: Why 'Last King of Scotland ?' ... Amin was a great fan of all things Scottish and it was one of the titles he gave himself after joking that he was driving the english out of his country .... he invented a few titles for himself, but this is a cracker ... "His Excellency President for Life Field Marshal Al Hadji Dr. Idi Amin, VC, DSO, MC, King of Scotland, Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Sea, and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular".
