Glebe St baths

Saw a photo the other day of the inside of the old baths.

The cubicles with wooden doors made me laugh, but what jogged my memory was the wire baskets for all your gear, which you handed to a guy at a counter, each basket had a number which was completely forgotten of course.

To tell the bloke you'd forgotten the number was met with a clip on the ear and a drag round the room to claim your basket.

The mirrors in the cubicles advertising woodbines and capstan full strength

Roddy Dyce and Willie Morrison

The wee card you would get at school which gave you 100 free admissions

Hiring a bath.. never did that but the baths were huge not like the wee bowls we have now!

Remember once my mate forgot his trunks, had to hire a pair from the office, he appeared out of the cubicles with what looked like a large woolen blanket wrapped round his midriff ! swimming up the pool he was slowly getting lower and lower as the blanket/trunks must have weighed about 20 lbs when it got wet!

Sitting on the steps outside afterwards with a cup of bowfin chicken soup with wet hair, watching the river

In my day we used to get taken to the baths from school about once a month, walking all through the town in a long crocodile. I never liked swimming and always used to try and get out of going. But you needed a 'note' from your Ma. Oh the joy the first time I realised I could make a reasonable fist of copying her signature!

Ths sign with pictures telling you the rules, like "No petting"

What else was on that sign? I remember "No Shouting", "No Running", "No Splashing" and "No (dive) Bombing"

Feckin spoilsports!

I remember the sadist that was Colin Baillie, during school swimming lessons forcing the weaker swimmers to jump off the high board to give them' confidence' in the water,

Probably scarred us for life.

... cant.. stop..twitching...

I remember us having competitions in school to see how long some one could stay under the cold shower think the record was about 17 pushes of the button.

I remember there was a way of tying your rubber band round it so it stayed on constantly!

Also who was the guy who used to do the "funny" dives into the pool!

I remember him exposing himself several times in the showers in front of me and my mates when we would have been about ten years old-would have got locked up nowadays!

The old baths were a blast. You could stay in as long as the mannie didna look at yer pruned hands. Then you got a clip round yer ear and sent to get changed. Usually by that time you had forgotten the wee number.

Lotsa good stuff there!

I remember the "pruned hands" thing. It was a con job because your hands went pruny after a quarter of an hour!

That rules sign - saw the same one in Alness swimming pool just the other week! Except there seemed to be more now!

We used to do specialist dives - "best man dead" - using a grenade/pistol/rifle/stengun, and best of the lot...

"The Mary Poppins of the top board" - you jumped and span at the same tie, like Mary Poppins holding an umbrella,

Rumour had it there was a huge tank of water underneat the whole pool which the staff used to check using subaqua gear.

George Follen is still teaching kids to swim. Or is it Roddy Geddes, with his green canvas belt.

There was a tuck shop up the top of the Eastmost side, which eventually got replaced by a machine.

LMS swimming club on a Thursday night.

And of course the awards board with the names of all teh prize winners, moved when the baths was destroyed, is now in the Inverness Sports Centre.

Gosh I never thought I remembered so much about it.

Great memories folks, obviously swimming baths are the same nationwide as many of these stories apply eqaully to my chilhood baths memories.Colin Baillie is an FP of the same school as myself must have learnt his sadisctic tendancies from the PE staff there!! I find it a shame nowadays when i take the wee lad to the aqaudome, any attempt at fun and kerry on is met with a shrill blast of the whistle and disaproving frown from a spotty 17 year old,I was even warned with eviction myself and I,m a responsible(?) forty somethinmg!!

Harris Academy FP from Dundee Heilandee? Nice, leafy, rugby-playing part of town. Very impressed. I managed to survive a few years in some of the less salubrious parts of that very fine city. Glad to have been there. Dundonians are amongst the most hospitable and generous people I have ever met (most of them anyway). They have (or at least had) an excellent swimming pool too.

The old Inverness baths - a true 20th Century Sneck institution. Many fond memories of the old Glebe Street pool - although not all are happy memories. Was rescued by Mr Fallon from drowning on one occasion when just a young kid. He could recall all the fine details of what happened on that occasion more than 30 years later. Mr Fallon is a true gentleman who had a genuine devotion to his work and I can never thank him enough for rescuing me during a moment of lapsed concentration by his colleagues. On that occasion the normally very stringent safety precautions observed by pool staff were found seriously wanting.
