Lots of evidence to show that this isn't such a bad plan.

I watched a documentary on Sky not that long ago that focused on Laughter as an important element in the treatment of Cancer. It's become so popular that doctors in America are actually prescribing laughter to patients and many hospitals actually have "laughter rooms" where it's all comedy on the TV or shows and stuff going on that are focused on giving patients a few giggles.

It's not all nonsense...it's actually backed by scientific study. Can't recall the full facts, but it all starts with laughter releasing endorphins and how these trigger other stuff that helps the body fight disease and heal itself in all kinds of ways.

Imagine the problems (and money) the Health Service could save if it dished out tickets to comedy shows and movies instead of bottles of pills.

D, ehm no doubting happy unstressed folk are generally more healthy than angst ridden miserable folk, but this is not about improving patient care , it's taking staff on "laughter courses" at ?350 (of taxpayers money) a pop FFS!!

"they are going to have an after-work laughter yoga club in Perth, Dundee and Kinross where staff can go and de-stress, connect and energise". Is that no what going to the pub wi yer mates after work is about?!! the absurdity of the whole thing had me checking the date or looking for a spoof link somewhere, but sadly it's true.

Ehm aff to look for an application form for the post of "certified laughter yoga leader".....someone,somewhere certainly needs certifying

Come on, be fair. This is Dundee we're talking about here. When have you ever heard a Dundonian laugh? Exactly! They need all the help they can get. I mean, this is the place where Jum McLean is known as the Laird of Laughter. Probably.

This is an easy subject to be cynical and flippant about but actually I am sure NHS Tayside will find this to be an excellent investment. As I understand it, this is aimed at de-stressing staff and helping staff to take a little time to have a bit of a laugh from time to time. Thinking of the NHS in days gone by brings back memories of strict matrons and discipline but there was also a lot more laughter and camaraderie amongst staff. Harmless practical joking was common, such as sending the new student to stores for a long stand ( they were sent back to the ward when they had been standing there long enough). These days such innocent pranks would be deemed both as unprofessional and as bullying. Not only is a bit of fun frowned upon, workload is much more intense and as a result staff absence from stress related illness is common. The cost of this laughter course is equivalent to the cost of just 2 or 3 days lost to ill health so if it helps staff to cope better with the stresses of the modern NHS then it is a great idea.

Just a thought, but with the money the NHS will save by not having to pay staff who go on strike on Nov 30th, we could send staff from every ward and department in the NHS on a laughter course. Alternatively we could all have a laugh by getting Alex Salmond himself to launch an anti-obesity campaign for the NHS.
