The General Election 2015 Thread

The Lib Dems and the Liberal Party before them, are adept at defending seats where they are incumbent and I strongly suspect that, while they will suffer losses, they will return to Westminster with more seats UK wide than the SNP.

Slightly off topic, but did I ever mention that as a 12 year old boy, I had the "privilege" of meeting Cyril Smith?  He was one of the few politicians I recognised back then and on a school trip to London I was pretty thrilled when he waddled up to me and my classmate and started talking to us. Very friendly he was, too!

Aye, despite the polling that's my gut feeling on it too.

Yes I'm sure he was!!!!

(PS - in what respect were you "thrilled"?)

I'm wondering what's happened to Labour in the Inverness constituency this time? I know that the presence of posters/placards is no measure of support for any party but in every other election, Labour's have been there along with the other parties'. However on this occasion they are conspicuous by their absence. There are plenty of LibDem and SNP ones, a fair number of Tory logos and even a few for the Christians and the Greens.

But I'm not sure if I've ever seen a Labour one this time round, although I did get a leaflet through my door. I just wonder if they are quietly hoping that some of their less solid vote which has not already opted for the SNP will simply drift to Danny Alexander?

I was surprised this morning to hear Danny Alexander on Radio Scotland this morning from the London studio, I would have thought with the Westminster recess and so close to an election he would have been at home live in Inverness.  I also herd myself on the radio after being interviewed before the game on Saturday :scotland:  :scotland:

If their local geography is as poor as their SNP opponents then they are probably campaigning in Ballinluig

Good place to campaign though. The Ballinluig Motorgrill's breakfasts and mixed grills in particular are excellent!

Campaigning in the wrong place isn't unprecedented, mind you. I think it was in the 1987 election that the Tory candidate for Inverness ended up chapping doors in the neighbouring Ross shire constituency. The irony was that the Tory in question was the Hon Tessa Keswick and the doors in question were in the immediate back yard of her dad, Lord Lovat.

In UK elections, Scottish Labour are normally able to take great swathes of West Central Scotland and industrial Fife for granted leaving them free to commit time and resources to other seats such as Inverness where the believe they may have an outside chance.

This time around, they are fighting like fury to keep seats in their traditional heartland having long since abandoned Inverness as a straight fight between the incumbent Danny Alexander and the SNP's Drew Hendry.

Accordingly, there will be little or no input from the area branch office in Glasgow leaving matters entirely to local activists who too are somewhat less than enthusiastic about pursuing a lost cause.

That seems a perfectly reasonable suggestion. Since my earlier post I have actually spotted three Labour placards in Culduthel Road so they're obviously targeting the middle class vote!

This is interesting. I believe the writer could be an honest Inverness man. http://scotlandowntwofeet.blogspot.co.uk/

Aye... one who repeatedly writes to the local papers plugging the SNP so the content of the blog is eminently predictable.

Strange how, in parallel with all the separatist stuff, those newly converted class warriors the SNP are trying to drag Scottish politics back to the 60s and 70s with all this CND stuff with "Bairns Not Bombs" the latest successor to other inane one liners such as "Free By 93", "Penny For Scotland", that famous Swinneyism "Ah Stan' Fur Scoa'land" and "It's Scotland's Oil Bonus"

On the other hand, fair play to them. They have spotted the gap at the left end of the political spectrum vacated by (New) Labour and reinvented themselves to fill it. In the best political tradition, it doesn't matter what they actually believe, if it gets votes then just say it's the only political philosophy you've ever believed in.

But I just wonder how many longstanding SNP workers are actually bright crimson left wingers? Believing in separation and and left wingery don't necessarily go together and indeed a lot of nationalist movements (eg Italy, Germany, Spain) have tended to be right wing. I bet a lot of this Damascene Socialism is sticking in the throats of a lot of SNP folks.

Charles talking to an old mate of your tells me you were in the team that won  "Top of The Form" which was an old Radio programme for clever kids, well done. I wont argue with you again, as your cerebral ability is way above mine.

By the way look at these odds

Labour are now favourites for a minority government

Which side of the campaign is finding it hard to stop fighting the referendum?   You'd almost (see there's that word again) think  this was the Palestinian Territories and the SNP was Hamas to hear Unionist rhetoric..

http://theconversation.com/a-political-party-is-threatening-the-union-and-its-not-the-snp-40507

This has reached new heights now that Cameron has unveiled a remarkable proposal to produce an annual report detailing how decisions made by the Scottish government affect the rest of the UK. This so-called Carlisle principle would then allow the other parts of the union to respond by taking compensatory action.

Treating the Scots as naughty children to be given report cards by their apparently wiser elders and punished if they do anything wrong is likely to further fray the ties that bind after May 7. But the danger goes further, and has been driven at least in part by the Conservative Party’s rhetoric regarding the SNP and Scottish MPs as a whole.

And Scottish Labour is still fighting it as well, but  under ramping up the fear of FFA which we don't have a snowball's chance in hell of getting from Westminster, unless we escape to a parallel universe, rather than independence....when we are more likely to get SFA, by the time the Smith proposals get through Parliament than anything else.

http://wingsoverscotland.com/tilting-at-windmills/

The strange thing is that the party arguing for FFA can neither offer nor deliver it, whereas the parties who warn it would be a catastrophe are the only ones who CAN implement it, and have already categorically stated that they won’t do it, thereby instantly disarming their own dire warnings.

This is all such fun!

Glad you are back Oddquine :scotland:

She has now served her ban imposed by the Compliance Officer at Celtic's request. :redcard:

Much more likely to have been at the request of Sevco/Newco Rangers.or the OO, don't you think, Charles?

Did you miss me?

Unfortunately the current football agenda renders that only the second best analogy!

I listened to Radio Scotland this morning to Willie Rennie's election pitch where he described the Lib Dem election candidates as Stonking!  I think he has his words mixed up I think he should have said Honking

Middle Class!  Culduthel, middle class?  Please!  We are much more refined than that. Try elsewhere for your middle classes.

No mix up.  It is the SNP candidates which are honking.  Indeed it would seem that even the SNP agree with that assessment as they keep having to rely on someone who isn't even a candidate in this election.

Well it's either that or have one who is presuming to make up Labour's budget for them.

If your hands were tied behind your back you wouldn't be able to find your arse either.  But I am quite sure Salmond will help Milliband with a budget which will ruin the country so that he can then turn to the Scottish electorate to claim Scotland would better off on its own.
