Watkins to Hearts?

Back on topic and here's one that might get folk riled up but I'll say it anyway...

I don't think that Watkins is worth a new deal, certainly not one that is on (significantly) more money than he is on now. I think he believes he is a lot better than he actually is and in recent weeks he has not been performing that well to justify a really good contract offer.

We would not be in 3rd place now, if it were not for Watkins.  He got the goals when Billy dried up earlier in the season., he filled in for Billy when he left - in an unfamiliar position and kept things going when we had no striker available.  Yes, he's dropped off the pace recently - as everyone else has, it's been a long season - but he's a specialist winger who has been playing as a lone striker!  We will miss him if he goes, and it's no surprise to me that clubs are coming in for him.

But only one goal since Billy has left us, so he got 6 in the league while Billy was playing which could be down to the fact Billy dragged the defenders out of position which let him score.

If we want to keep him and he wants lots of money why don't we just offer him incentives i.e. goal bonuses etc

Very probably because we can't afford to. We have to run a very tight ship indeed.

If we reach final and finish third we could.

We reached a final and finished fourth last season and still turned only a very modest profit.

Since Mckay left we've won once in the league during which time Watkins has scored one goal. I don't think that he is responsible for keeping us in third place but nor do I think we are there in spite of him. I just don't think that his performances, for a prolonged time now, potentially justify an overly generous contract offer. We shouldn't break the bank to keep him basically.

I tend to agree with RiG and with all due respect to the player, who himself has not been disrespectful to the club or fans and seems to choose his words carefully when interviewed, the overwhelming feeling I get is that he thinks he has outgrown ICThttp://www.inverness-courier.co.uk/Sport/Football/Watkins-I-feel-I-can-go-higher-07042015.htm

If he decides to go we will say 'thanks for your contribution', 'good luck' and then we will move on. He will be remembered fondly, but he wont be classed as a club legend or anything like that ....

Always good to hear other folk agreeing with you

Don't get me wrong I think he is a decent player and he has done a reasonable turn up front for us but the impression I get is that he thinks he is worth (a lot) more than what we should be offering. If it was Mckay I would say throw everything we could into getting him to sign a new deal. With Watkins though I think make him a decent offer but don't go beyond that. I don't think he is worth breaking our backs to try and retain for a small fortune.

I hope he stays and would love it if he forced me to ram my words down my throat but if he does end up leaving good luck to the guy. He seems an ambitious lad and if he can get a better deal than what we are willing offer fair play to him.

I like Marley and if he stays I will be very happy but........ We have been here before and as far as I am aware we are going to have our best season ever ( in terms of league placings and at least a cup semi final). We have lost players like Bingham, Mann, Robson, Wyness, Dods, Rooney, Hayes, Rankin, Cowie, Wilson to name a few and always seem to come back stronger and better.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'd pick a donkey with bad eyesight and 2 left feet before Tremarco.    he is awful.

Don't donkey's have 2 left feet anyway? (and 2 right ones too)

So just a donkey with bad eyesight then?

Short sighted or long sighted?
