STAY AT HOME. SAVE LIVES. It could not be clearer, the advice remains the same.

Enjoy the latitude of your extra ability to exercise if you are not sheilding and have the mobility to do so. Otherwise keep following the advice of the government to stay at home to save lives.

Lockdown measures will be eased as soon as it is judged that that can be done without risking the lives of ourselves and others but not a day before.

The people have been magnificent so far in complying with instructions. We just need to be patient for a while yet.

I think Nicola, and her compatriots in Wales and N. Ireland have done the right thing in continuing the lockdown .  Whilst down here in Englandshire bumbling Boris has muddied the waters with his new 'Stay alert' message, which is almost certainly going to confuse people, or worse still, give them an excuse to ignore the advice of recent weeks.  Anyway, I'm just about to hear what he has to say.

Telling people “stay at home” and “go out for exercise as often as you want” in the very same statement is somewhat inconsistent messaging in itself though.

People have been great at following the guidelines, but in doing my weekly shop at Tesco it is clearly that pretty much nobody paid attention to the recommendation to wear face masks in public, I’d estimate 5% adherence to that one which isn’t any higher than it was before the plea.

Listened to the PM's broadcast. Not once did he state that almost none of what he said applies to Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Now did you really expect him to Kingsmills?  It's the SPFL Tory Party

Confused messages are in nobody's interest and will cost lives.  The Scottish Government says that they had not been consulted over the change of slogan and the UK Government says that the measures they announced were part of a process that involved consultation with the devolved administrations.  Someone is telling porkies and whilst I don't really care who it is, it does need to stop.  When the Prime Minister or other UK ministers make statements which they know are applicable only to one or some of the nations they need to specify that and to emphasise the different advice that applies elsewhere.  These statements are not seen just in England.  The impact of the virus is different in different parts of the UK and in Scotland we appear to be a bit behind England's curve. So whilst a consistent UK (or at least, a GB) approach is highly desirable  it is entirely reasonable that the devolved administrations should take a different path when justified.  But it needs to be seen to be justified.  The Scottish mask advice was a serious error of judgement which not only differed from UK advice but from WHO advice too.  As Yngwie points out, it has been largely ignored by the public and the worry for me is that it will lead to people continuing to listen to and follow the UK or specifically English advice when a different approach actually is justified in Scotland.  We need better clarity from both Governments.

You are right. Someone is not being honest and telling porkies. Is it the First Ministers of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland  all of whom have very different political perspectives,or is it the person responsible for a lie plastered on the side of a bus, who was judicially determined to have lied about the reason for prorogation of Parliament, who misled the queen, who cheated on his wife, who lied to his close political allies the DUP and who has been sacked at least twice from professional positions for dishonesty.

I can see your point. It's a tricky one.

  • 2 weeks later...

Four more days and these draconian conditions that we have all been living under will start to slowly ease.

It will be a slow, long and sometimes stuttering path on the road back to some sort of normality but we have been provided with a path, perhaps not the path we would have chosen but a much clearer and safer path than at least one nation of the United Kingdom has been provided with.

The reason we are now able at last to embark on that path is not mainly down to our political leaders who have made mistakes but again not nearly as many and as reckless mistakes as the political leaders of one nation of the United Kingdom and, sadly, the United Kingdom as a whole but due to the fact that we  the ordinary people, have been sensible and considerate of and compassionate to others and have as a result, spared the lives of countless of our fellow Scots.

If we, or at least the great majority of us, continue to act in such a responsible way and follow the new rules and guidelines, whatever they may be, we will continue to save lives and Hasten the day we can get back to something like normal.

Well done to everyone. It has been long and hard but we are getting there.

At least north of the border Nicola has been clear and unequivocal in her advice and instructions.  Down here bumbling Boris and his cohorts see fit to massage the rules to suit the puppet master, Cummings.  Totally outrageous, and I hope the general public will make him pay for it, sooner rather than later.

That press conference / briefing from Johnson was utterly shameful. That Cummings has not been sacked when he has clearly broken the law and somehow retains the support of the Government is appalling.

Appalling but sadly not surprising. Typical of their elitist arrogance and the disdain that they have for the ordinary people and the huge sacrifices and restrictions of their own rights and liberties  they have made during this pandemic.

The only reason that Cummings  Johnston  Hancock, Whittey and countless others caught the virus in the first place is their reckless disregard for their own social distancing rules from the very outset.

How it must sicken you that ICT have been saved, or at least given a fighting chance of getting through this, by the generosity of a UK Tory government, whilst the Scottish Government have done nothing except show little appetite to allow football to restart as quickly as other parts of the UK and Europe.

Our chairman referred to the funding as a “fairy from a Westminster” in a podcast and our official statement described the UK government’s funding of the majority of our wages as “a Godsend”, and that was even before they extended the scheme for a further 4 months. It’s not even a loan, it’s an unconditional gift that we don’t have to ever pay back. Doesn’t quite fit your description of them only acting “for the rich”, bearing in mind also that about 750,000 other Scots ordinary workers have so far kept their jobs and a decent income because of the UK government’s steps to bail out Scotland, again.

What do you think would be the best way for ICT to show its gratitude? Would it be a the “Boris Johnston Stadium” or a statue of him out the front?

Just to be clear, unless you have missed the vital recent public health advice.

If you have any doubt at all about your fitness to drive through failing eyesight, it is vital that you drive a minimum of 30 miles to the nearest popular beauty spot, preferably on a public holiday which also happens to be your wife's birthday, get out of your car and sit by a pleasant water course for a minimum of 15 minutes and then drive back to where you set off from. You must also have a vulnerable young child in your vehicle. This is particularly important if you should, under no reasonable circumstances, have been at the point of departure in the first place.

The measures put in place by the UK government in an economic sense are broadly welcome.

However, they are not as generous or as comprehensive as similar measures put in place by the Rebublic of Ireland, Denmark and Norway all of which have similar populations and resources as Scotland and all of which  through having control of their own borders, have very significantly lower death rates than the United Kingdom.

What on earth makes you think that an independent Scotland with full control of the fiscal levers and border controls, would fare any less well than our similar European neigbours ?

Sorry, the pandemic is more serious than political squabbles and point scoring.

Was Cummings wrong to do what he did? Yes.

Is Boris a bit of a buffoon? Yes.

Is Nicola calling everything right? No.

Just be glad we don’t have Trump telling us to drink bleach!!

They are doing what they think is right and, whether we individually voted for them or not, they got elected and it is their job to guide us through this.

None of us would want their jobs: they are on a hiding to nothing.

I just hope the sorry saga of the last few days does not cost lives as people stop following the guidance and become complacent.

Bail out Scotland. The state of this. 😃

Norway is dipping into its oil fund to support its population, but oil-poor Scotland has to rely on its southern benefactors to bail it oot, again!

You actually think you won't be paying back this 'gift' with interest for decades to come? 🤣

I’m glad you acknowledge that unpopular measures will have to be taken to repay the bail out. Guess which party will be first to criticise those measures and say they aren’t necessary!

What certainly isn't necessary is another dose if austerity. Time to renew the economy with investment in sustainable non carbon producing industry for which Scotland is well placed.

I am now going to utter a phrase that surprises even myself but credit to Douglas Ross. In the one particular regard at least whatever his true motivation was. In every other regard he was a shite junior minister and an equally shite assistant referee who was never going to swap either his literal or his metaphorical flag for a whistle.

Despite our limited lockdown relaxation we now have KLM flying in daily from Amsterdam. I really hope everyone arriving sticks by the quarantine rules. We have been less hit than many areas but I do worry that there is more to come as lockdown eases.

It certainly doesn’t help that a month after the Scottish Government implemented its quarantine rules, it still hasn’t set up a process to check that people flying in to Scotland are subject to any follow up checks at all. Oops.

Perhaps that might change now that the Home Office are finally cooperating with Scottish government officials and releasing the relevant information.

It might also assist just a tad that the cautious and more considered approach of the Holyrood government has reduced the prevalence of the virus circulating in Scotland to approximately 18% of that South of the border yet Unionists continue to take every opportunity to politicise the pandemic.

It seems that that hadn't gone unnoticed by the public if the opinion poll published in today's Sunday Times Is any guide.

NS's personal approval ratings at +60, BJ's at -38. Support for independence at 54% and for the SNP at 55%.

All other parts of the UK got their schemes up and running. The Scottish Government just made an arse of this. It happens.  If it was in any way the UK governments fault we’d have heard about it, incessantly.
