As Robert the Bruce said....

If at first you don't succeed.....

It's the second time of asking and we are due to play Arbroath at Gayfield on Wednesday night with a 7:45pm kick-off. This game was re-scheduled from 2nd January due to a frozen pitch on that occasion.

To be perfectly honest, our season is in absolute disarray at the moment with re-scheduled games in abundance. Add in Scottish Cup ties that were postponed, then put on hold, this campaign is a disaster for the Caley Jags. On top of that, our inability to attract players North during the pandemic is a cause for concern when all around us are strengthening their squads. It has certainly raised a few eyebrows and we could be in more danger of staving off relegation than pushing for a top four finish.

One bright note is that Scott Allardice has signed on for another couple of years. He has been one of our better bargains and is well worth the contract.

Last time out we drew 2-2 at Morton. That may have been seen as a decent result, but when you consider that we threw away a 2-1 lead against ten men for fifty minutes then it simply was not good enough. A point not lost on manager John Robertson who was unusually despondent after the game.

We did manage to play Arbroath earlier in the season and eased to a 3-1 win in the Highlands. Dan Mackay, Scott Allardice and Nikolay Todorov were the scorers. Allardice's goal was his first for the Caley Jags and what a thumper it was. Kris Doolan scored the opener for Arbroath while Pixellot were following the linesmans head.

The Red Lichties last outing was a bonus for them as they beat the very same Morton that we failed to beat at Cappielow. Loan signing Jack Hamilton opened his Smokies account after coming in from Livingston. That result lifted Arbroath off the foot of the table. Incidentally, that was Hamilton's 11th goal of the season, a man worth watching. He had previously been on loan at East Fife and did well up here in the League Cup group stages with the Fifers. Lichties two games before the win at Morton were draws with Dundee and Queen of the South.

McKay and Todorov at centre half. No Deas or Devine. Vincent starts with Allardice and Carson on the bench. Strange line up.

Are we resting them with so many games coming up? Thought it would be more attacking players getting rested than centre backs

Devine has done ok so could be a loss. We did win the last time Toddy started at centre half but we played 3-5-2 that night.

Really surprised that Allardice is only on bench but assume he has a slight knock. Vincent had a good first half at Morton: we need a good 90 from him tonight. Hopefully Keatings is in the mood tonight.

I must say I’m a bit nervous!

It looks like it is in Arbroath’s favour this half so we may be under a lot of pressure. Hope we can keep it tight and use the wind to our advantage in the second half.

Arbroath throw ins going further than our goal kicks. Anything could happen in this game!

We should be playing to the weather. We decided to change half's before kick off cause of the wind

Keep the ball on the deck

In the second we need to shoot on sight and use the wind advantage. We’ve coped pretty well so far but have been under real pressure and will do well if we go in level at half time.

Storey’s pace has been our main threat.

Highlight for me is the commentary team. They are great fun with some priceless lines.

Me and my big mouth: 1-0 for Arbroath at half time.

Quick break after the wind messed up a free kick for us. Good play and finish by Hamilton. We can’t fault the defence for it.

We came so close to holding out, but as Wyness101 said we switched at the toss to have the wind advantage second half so it is up to us to make use of that.

We will soon see how much impact the wind had as we should have the bulk of the territory and possession after the break. I still think we can win this, but we need to play quick football and shoot on sight.
