Group F Winners On paper this was going to be a dawdle. In reality these games are not played on paper and could prove to be more difficult with Morton putting out a much stronger starting XI than the one that went down to St Johnstone. We had a similar line-up to our last game with Joe Chalmers and Ryan Duncan starting in place of Wotherspoon and Paul Allan with Morgan Bates still missing. Morton brought in Longridge, Wilson and Cochrane with Brophy and O'Halloran on the bench. As the dust settled, the Caley Jags topped Group F and proceed into the last sixteen. An Alfie Bavidge penalty after quarter of an hour was the difference between the sides. East Fife finished second after beating St Johnstone 4-5 on penalties. The ninety minutes ended in dramatic fashion with Stanton scoring after ninety minutes and Healy equalising in the ninety-fifth minute to take it to spot kicks. On to next weekend when we begin our Championship campaign at home to Dunfermline Athletic. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The visitors got the game underway in their Black & Tan outfit and Morton were first to threaten running into the penalty box down the left side but a shrill whistle from the ref stopped play as Inverness were awarded a free kick. Early posturing and little fluidity saw play a bit disjointed, probably not helped by a lively surface that looked like it held a rock concert a day ago. The visitors were enjoying the bulk of the early possession but no goalmouth action until we were awarded a penalty in the 14th minute after Liam Sole was adjudged to have been fouled by Dean Black. Alfie Bavidge made no mistake from the spot. Morton were out of this by any means and looked busy around the edge of our box on a couple of occasions without working the keeper. We offered them a glimmer of hope after losing the ball on the right before Ross Munro was brought into action, saving at the expense of a corner on the half hour from Callum Sandilands curling shot. That encouraged the Ton and we had to defend a couple of awkward balls into the box as the hosts enjoyed their best spell of the game so far. A good bit of work on the left side set Chalmers up for a shot but he probably wished he hadn't bothered as he badly skied his awry effort. We did put the ball in the net after another sweeping move but Sole was flagged offside ten minutes before the break. Plenty of action around the home box but only the one goal to show for it. HALF TIME: 0-1 Morton made two changes at the break with O'Toole and Murphy on for Black and McLuckie. A lot of the early play in the second half was being disrupted by the referee's whistle which ruined any hope of free flowing football. A Morton corner was headed high over at the back post by Kris Moore twelve minutes in. Everything looked rushed as we headed towards the hour mark in an untidy encounter. All we could muster was a deflected Ryan Duncan shot that was easily gathered by the keeper. Substitute O'toole was first into the book for a robust tackle on Graeme Shinnie. A Sandilands ball across the face of our six yard box went abegging and at the other end Kinnear gathered a low shot from Longstaff. Morton were pushing for a leveller over the final ten minutes and as the scrappy play continued Harry Cochrane fired over followed closely by an Iain Wilson effort. Hamzad Kargbo thought he was Alfie Stewart for a moment but his clipped effort from way out drifted harmlessly wide. A drive into the box by Adam MacKinnon saw his parting shot run across the six yard box and out. FULL TIME: 0-1 Plenty of effort from both teams on a difficult surface but it was Alfie Bavidge's penalty after quarter of an hour that made the difference. We were deserved winners but made harder work of it than we probably should have. St Johnstone thought they had beaten East Fife with an injury time winner from Sam Stanton but up popped Jack Healy to level the tie in the 95th minute. It went to penalties with East Fife getting the bonus point 4-5 on penalties That result at Perth saw East Fife go second in the table with St Johnstone eliminated. Group FPos. The disallowed goal came about because of one pass too many. Stewart could have shot but passed, Bav (I think) should have shot but passed, and Sole was offside. Same with the Chalmers shot. Whoever cut it back to him had done all the hard work and deserved to finish it. Final Group F Match @ Morton We head to Greenock for our final Group F League Cup tie sitting on top of the table after an excellent midweek win over Premiership St Johnstone. Morton are still finding their 26/27 feet after a slow start to their season and no wins in their first three Group F ties. What could possibly go wrong? We topped the table after that win over much fancied St Johnstone thanks to a superb strike from Alfie Stewart who simply does not do tap-ins. New signing, striker Miller Keir, played the final twenty minutes and looks like a useful addition. I don't for a minute believe that Morton will be as easy a fixture as previous results indicate, but a win for the Caley Jags will put us into the last sixteen, somewhere we have not been over the last few seasons. Let's not underestimate the task in hand as Morton will no doubt reinstate more of their first choice as we approach the start of the Championship campaign. Judging by their team selection at Perth, they are still a work in progress with just one more week til the start of the Championship campaign where they kick-off with a tough starter at home to Partick Thistle. They only had three youths and an Academy keeper on the bench and started with a trialist. Calum Sandilands has been brought in on loan from Hearts. He was a prominent player at Montrose last season. I'm sure they will have some more senior players on display this weekend with the likes of Cochrane, Ballantyne, Longridge, O'Halloran, Gillespie, Brophy and Wilson all missing at Perth. Alfie Stewart Stunner Sinks Saints Group F's top two clashed at the Caledonian Stadium with the hosts new signing, Miller Keir on the bench as was defender Kerr Smith. Morgan Bates was missing, presumed injured. St Johnstone had former Caley Jags players Reece McAlear and Logan Chalmers on the bench but former defender Morgan Boyes was handed a start. An Alfie Stewart forty yarder was the difference between the sides as Inverness hit the top of Group F ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Inverness opened the scoring with a stunning forty yard shot when Alfie Stewart picked the pockets of two midfielders after keeper Steward had come well out of his box to mop up a loose ball. Alfie's next move saw him float a precise ball high into the net from forty yards. Take a bow wee Alfie. Terrific strike. We looked dangerous going forward with Sole and Bavidge using their pace to good effect. Bavidge was unfortunate to see his shot blocked just before the interval as he burst into the box on the inside right position. Perth called up the cavalry around the hour mark but Inverness also looked dangerous on numerous sorties forward. On one of these ventures, Calum Macleod brought out a good low save from the keeper at full stretch as he offloaded an angled shot across the box. A late flurry saw Sam Stanton skim the top of the bar with a powerful strike and a superb Josh Fowler header hit the bar with two minutes left, but it was Inverness that took the three points to top the Group F. Biggest Test So Far for Cashless Caley Jags Without doubt, this is our sternest test of the new season as St Johnstone come North on Tuesday night for a 7:45 kick-off at the Caledonian SarensPSG Stadium with the teams occupying the top two places in League Cup Group F. East Fife host The Rose on Tuesday night with both teams having already defeated an out of sorts Morton who are pointless after three games. The group stages conclude on Saturday afternoon with Morton at home to the Caley Jags and St Johnstone hosting East Fife. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but it's good preparation before we meet Dunfermline in the opening encounter of the Championship season on 1st August. League Cup Group F A visit to the Rose on League Cup action saw the Caley Jags run out comfortable winners with Rose keeper Cammy Binnie in outstanding form to keep the visitors goal tally down. We did strike twice in the first half through Ryan Duncan and full back Noa Boutin. The stats will show that Binnie made nine saves which is a great effort and it also shows that the Caley Jags got eleven shots on target from fifteen attempts and an incredible thirteen corners! Inverness are at home to St Johnstone on Tuesday night. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here's the talking points: 13: Attempt saved. Graeme left footed shot from more than 35 yards is saved in the top left corner by Cammy Binnie. 17: ICT forced a couple of corners before Ryan Duncan fired home from the centre of the box. Inverness won four corners on the trot shortly after that came to nothing before Morgan Bates shot over. 38: Paul Allan saw an effort from outside the box saved by Binnie and Noa Boutin was on hand to score a great second for the visitors. We finished the half with a flourish as Bates shot wide and Alfie Stewart was denied by Binnie. Jags at the Rose It's the second League Cup fixture for the Caley Jags as they travel to Prestonfield to take on Lowland League East side Linlithgow Rose. Rose got off to a winning start in group F as they beat Morton 1-0 in their opening fixture as we struggled to a 1-1 draw with League1 East Fife. On Tuesday night Rose lost 0-2 against Premiership St Johnstone with a Caley Jags XI playing out a friendly at Strathspey Thistle and bagging six goals. Morton made our draw with East Fife look like a ground breaking result as the Fifers beat them 2-0 on the same night. We have had defender Kerr Smith on trial during pre-season and he has penned a one year deal. As expected, Jordan Alonge has left the Caley Jags to try his luck at Salisbury FC in the sixth tier of English football, National League South. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Match/Ticket/Bus/Info Loan Agreement with Brora ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Inverness got off to a low key start with a disappointing performance in their opening game. We did win the penalty shoot-out but our performance left a lot to be desired with an error strewn lackadaisical ninety minutes. Poor defending, no bite in midfield and no service for the front men saw us struggle to make any headway with East Fife taking the initiative to punish an error from Liam Sole to open the scoring before the interval. We huffed and puffed but never blew the house down before a time added on strike by Adam MacKinnon took it to penalties where we netted all five spot kicks. We have added defender Kerr Smith to our squad with Jake Rodgers, Archie Kerr and James Clark being loaned out to Brora Rangers. Jordan Alonge is no longer on the payroll. The great start to group F for Rose was put on hold in midweek but they can hold their heads high after a decent performance against now Premiership St Johnstone, going down 0-2 in front of over 1200 fans. Two down at the break, they kept Saints out for the whole of the second half with Cameron Binnie making a handful of saves to keep out the eager Perth forwards. They had beaten Morton last Saturday with Calum Rae scoring the only goal of the game after an hour at Cappielow . The stats show that Binnie had no saves to make in a deserved win over the Chamionship side. KEY INFOAll supporters will enter via the social club end of the stadium. In addition to the regular sale of teas, coffees, pies etc (housed under the enclosure), a local award winning Indian restaurant will be on site selling pakora, curry, loaded fries etc. The social club function hall will be open to supporters of both teams subject to capacity. The nearest pubs are 5 – 10 minute walk from the stadium. There is car parking available at Linlithgow Academy and there are car parks in the town centre. Supporters should not park in the business units across the road from the stadium nor in the flats nearby. Please park sensibly around surrounding areas and give yourself plenty of time to get into the stadium.

Desperate Stuff A dreadful game where we shared a goal apiece with almost relegated East Fife. We prevailed in the penalty shoot-out to earn the bonus point but the performance was not what was expected. I know I know it is usually a competition we use to fine tune our squad but we are a far cry from the finished article going by that performance. An absolutely honking performance mostly played at pre-season pace. The one bit of quality got us level in time added on, from a neat finish into the bottom corner by MacKinnon after good work down the left flank. Otherwise dreadful. Too many players looked as if they were still on a pre-season jolly with no apparent urgency on the job in hand. I've seen better stuff at the Hub over the last few weeks from under 12's. I don't know why I bother sometimes. Gaffney opened the scoring after the half hour in a dour uneventful game. It started with Scotlandesque defending and a poor choice of ball out of the box from Savage. Sole failed to control the ball. It was transferred forward with the Fife forward player looking yards offside and Myles Gaffney knocked in with nobody near him. Our attacking efforts were as insipid as the national team as well, however MacKinnon's goal in time added on was a good low curling effort from around 16 yards after two or three players were involved down the left side. Ross Munro made one good save in the penalty shoot-out as he saved the Fifers second spot kick. We put all five of ours away comfortably. Shinnie, Wotherspoon, Kargbo, Bates and Longstaff winning us the bonus point. Reis Peggie, Pat Slattery, and David Wilson scored from the spot for East Fife with Tyrell Skeen-Hamilton having his penalty saved by Ross Munro. In the other Group F fixture Linlithgow Rose pulled off a good win at Cappielow, defeating Morton 1-0 with a goal from Callum Rae early in the second half. We play the Rose next week at Prestonfield. We were not the only Championship side to struggle. As well as Morton going down, Dunfermline were pumped 3-0 at East Kilbride. League Cup - Season Opener The 2026/2027 competitive season kicks off with a home fixture in the Premier Sports Cup, group F. East Fife managed to avoid relegation from League1 last season including a hard fought 1-1 draw with the Caley Jags in the penultimate game of last season. Dick Campbell remains in charge. The loss of Michael Mackenna will be a blow to them but Mamadou Bah has signed a new deal at Bayview, as has David Wilson and Reis Peggie. The experienced Pat Slattery is also backalong with Liam Newton and Kieran Millar and in 38 year old Derek Gaston they have a vastly experienced man between the sticks. CTO Player of the YearOscar MacIntyre Oscar has had a great season with us since signing from Hibs and has been a favourite with the fans. He has scored 1 goal for the club in our 3-3 draw with Partick Thistle in the KDM Trophy (which we won on penalties) and picked up 5 yellow cards, in 37 appearances for the club. Starting the season well he was then rotated with Mitchell Robertson, but was picking up votes in most games he played throughout the season. 🏆 League1 Champions 🏆 The Caley Jags are off to the Championship after beating Hamilton Accies 2-1 in front of over 5000 raucous fans at the Caledonian Stadium. An early strike from Captain Danny Devine in the third minute settled the nerves and an absolute club legend Billy Mckay added a second before half an hour to up the volume in the stadium. I spoke to Billy at East Fife and he assured me they would get the job done this week. What a legend. Accies scored a late goal through Kevin O'Hara and we had an extra late drama when they were awarded a penalty. However Ross Munro pulled off a tremendous diving save to deny Oli Shaw and that was the cue for an enthusiastic but premature pitch invasion. About fifteen minutes later the game resumed for a handful of seconds before referee Chris Graham called a halt and the real pitch invasion started. Credit to Stenhousemuir for giving it a real go all season, good luck in the play-offs. Full report and match reaction tomorrow. We have some celebrating to do now. 🍺 The Main Stand and the North Stand were packed out as the the teams took to the pitch for hopefully the final time this season. Would we take the game to Accies or would we play a cagey game like we did at East Fife the previous week? That question would be answered in the third minute when Captain Danny Devine crashed Paul Allan's corner kick high into the net in front of the Hamilton fans to set the scene for the afternoon with the home fans loving this early advantage. Inverness were in control of the early stages with the bulk of the game being played in the Accies third of the pitch with MacKinnon and Wotherspoon prominent and Billy Mckay rolling back the years as he buzzed around the front line. Alfie Bavidge was also running the channels and using his pace to good effect. Accies were restricted to shooting from range, not necessarily on target with Ross Munro idle for the most part. The pressure was mounting on the visitors with a number of blocked efforts keeping the score down, but nobody was on hand to stop club legend Billy Mckay scoring after great work on the left side through Wotherspoon and Mitchell Robertson whose cross into the box was finished by Billy, his 132nd goal for this club. That ramped up the volume in the stands, however we all held our breath when the ball got stuck under Devine's feet as he tried to get the ball back to Munro. Thankfully the keeper managed to get to the ball in the nick of time to dribble his way out of danger and keep us two ahead at the break. Alas Danny's game was over before the break as he was unable to continue after an earlier knock and he limped off to be replaced by Oscar MacIntyre with Robertson moving inside to centre back. HALF TIME: 2-0 Accies looked sharper after a torrid first half and pressed Inverness higher up the park without really troubling Munro. We blocked a couple of attempts in the first few minutes of the second half as we seemed content to hold what we had and in truth, the game lost it's sparkle and deteriorated into a dire midfield battle. Ross Millen had an effort saved before the substitutes flowed from both sides. We did force four corners in quick succession but it ended with the ball holding up in the breeze and going behind. Millen hit a fierce shot just wide as we looked to kill off the game and the best chance of the second half saw Alfie Stewart head wide after a great ball in from the left. The game was untidy over the final fifteen minutes but there was late drama when Kevin O'Hara scored after we conceded one too many free kicks allowing Accies to get the ball into our box all too often for my liking. Ahh well, so be it. However, there was further drama when we were all waiting for the final whistle to blow. Millen was adjudged to have tripped Oli Shaw who took the spot kick himself. As befits champions, Ross Munro pulled off a great save to his right and that triggered a spontaneous pitch invasion from the over eager young team. It took a while to clear a thousand or so from the playing surface before the game restarted. It was barely worth restarting and the game was brought to a halt seconds later to start invasion number two, this time in earnest as jubilant fans celebrated on the park with players. FULL TIME: 2-1 It's been a long season, coming from five points behind as we set out to win the title. Thirty-six League1 games later and add on four League Cup ties, two Scottish Cup ties and eleven KDM trophy games, it's been quite a journey. Not to mention seven pre-season encounters and a testimonial plus three North of Scotland Cup ties then it really has been a wonderful season after all the trauma we have come through under our previous failed regime.
