Looks like the football banter has started already for the season.

    INVERNESS:

    Manager: Richie Foran.

    Ground: Tulloch Caledonian Stadium.

    Last season: 7th.

    Key man: Owain Fon Williams.

    Title odds: 500/1.

MOST people seem to think Inverness will be safe but for me they are favourites for relegation.

They have brought in Billy King, who spent half of last season on loan at Rangers, as well as former Aberdeen defender Kevin McNaughton.

Aside from that they have done very little and Caley – who shockingly let John Hughes go – could struggle under Irish rookie Richie Foran.

Verdict: 12th. I struggle to see enough strength and depth in a Caley side who have over-achieved in the past few years

Players that played in a TEAM that weren't good enough for the SPFL.

    p.s. What's the Premiership?

My point is that I've seen fans showing interest in numerous Dundee Utd players that as stated, made up a large part of the squad that weren't good enough for the Premiership.

P.s - The SPFL stands for the Scottish Professional Football League which Dundee Utd are still a part of. The Premiership is the league table that our club participates in. Hope this clears it up for you.

  3. Biggest mistake today was tactically.

Yogi started with a 3-5-2 shape that looked to cut out playing through the midfield. This resulted in passing between the back three plus keeper before aiming long passes into the channels for Storey and Roberts to chase, hold up and allow the 'advanced' midfielders to get forward and support. Although this worked well for the first 10 minutes, winning several corners, it quickly went wrong as Hibs pressed us high up the pitch and stopped our back three having any kind of out ball. I have only ever seen us play this way once, away vs Partick Thistle last season where it didn't work, and it certainly didn't work today.

    Tactic 1 (3-5-2):

    Fon Williams

    Warren Devine Tremarco

    Tansey Vigurs

    Polworth Draper Williams

    Roberts Storey

Worryingly, it took Yogi 70 minutes until he recognised change was needed. Credit where credit is due though, the subs changed the game for us and we looked much better thereafter. We moved to our favoured 4-2-3-1 and suddenly the defence had more time on the ball and could pick out shorter passes and play through Tansey and Draper. For example, Horner took a Hibs player away, creating room for Warren to move into who played a good pass into Mutombo in the build up to our goal.

    Tactic 2 (4-2-3-1):

    Fon Williams

    Horner Warren Devine Tremarco

    Tansey Draper

    Storey Mutombo Williams

    Roberts

In my view, we're very fortunate to still be in the cup but we'll take it. Theres a great chance for another cup final but Yogi needs to find a system that gets us looking more dangerous without opening up at the back too much. For me, Storey isn't the centre forward that we can use in a 4-2-3-1 and the sooner we get Fisher back fit, the better.

I've not seen (or heard) any direct quotes from the Manager (or anyone for that matter) saying only one of them will be retained.

Suspect it is, again, just paper talk.......i.e. Rumour Mill at best for this kinda thread.

Hughes said: “Dean is getting closer. I said many months ago I reckoned it would be the end of February before he’d be looking for games.

“He’s working hard and he’s getting there. He’s starting to look good and he’s now doing a lot of specific stuff which is good news for him.

“We’ve got a decision to make on who will be the goalkeeper next year.

“It will be one or the other, I don’t think we’ve got the finance to keep the two of them but that decision is for a couple of months’ time.

“It’s the way football goes. That’s what’s good about it, when we’ve got competition for places it really pushes people along to give it their best shot.”

  5. Couldn't help but notice that Owain Fon Williams has new followers on twitter...namely David Raven, Greg Tansey & James Vincent. I think we have a new goalie...

  6. Ryan Christie is undoubtadly one of the brightest prospects playing in the SPFL just now - his and Mckay's link up play today was superb. Hope we can hold on to him for a few more years. He certainly has the potential to do what Ryan Guald has done

  7. Today was the first chance that I've had to see ICT since the end of last season and i'm impressed by the progression being made to adapt to Yogi's philosophy and style. We started off as shown below with Vincent, Christie and Williams often moving into each other positions to give us a fluid formation. This worked a treat as the players looked comfortable moving with each other and Hamilton found it hard to pick up the players as they dragged the defenders out of their positions. The most pleasing aspect of this for me was that when we did lose the ball, we quickly regained our 4-2-3-1 shape which we know is hard to break down.

    Starting formation

    Brill

    Raven Meekings Warren Shinnie

    Draper Tansey

    Vincent Christie Williams

    Mckay

Meekings and Warren both seem to have developed a better understanding of what Yogi is trying to do and they were both more than happy to have the ball and pass it across the back four and at the right times, playing it into Tansey and Draper who were always dropping deep to ask for the ball. Raven and Shinnie played noticeably higher up the pitch (which suits them both) almost as wing-backs which pinned the Hamilton wingers back and allowed the centre halves time on the ball. This was particularly noticeable from goal kicks when the below formations was adopted. The ball was very rarely punted long due to Meekings and Warren splitting to the side of the box and allowing Tansey/Draper to drop deep and receive the ball. Occasionally, Christie came deep to pick up the ball with Vincent and Williams dropping inside. This allowed space for Raven and Shinnie to get up the wing.

    From Goal Kicks

    Brill

    Meekings Tansey Warren

    Raven                               Shinnie

    Draper Christie

    Vincent      Mckay      Williams

One of my worries with Yogi has been the lack of a 'Plan B' however, there was definitely a change of style once the subs (in particular Watkins and Doran) were brought on today. Although possession was still the main focus, the supporting three stuck to their positions, provided width and we saw the end of the inter changing positions. Although this isn't a change of formation I'd certainly class it as a 'Plan B' and it fills me with confidence that we seem to have more than one system.

Introduction of Watkins, Doran & Ross

    Brill

    Raven Meekings Warren Shinnie

    Draper Tansey

    Watkins Ross Doran

    Mckay

Overall, impressive performance today but there is a long way to go and still a lot of work to be done. Hamilton were very poor today and against a stronger team we may need to raise the speed of our forward play. The key to this style of play is patience and realising that when we choose to go back to the keeper, rather than go forward, we are choosing to place a higher emphasis on possession to stop the opposition having the ball. We killed the game today by keeping the ball which worked a treat. Today was great to watch and the players looked delighted at full time and long may it continue. Top 6 and cup final is still very much achievable. Bring on Dundee  :ictscarf:
