  1. Just noticed Paul McMullan was in Berwick's squad for their game against Celtic - didn't he have a few months on our books when we were promoted in 2004? I can't actually find any record of him having played a single minute for us in a competitive game.

It started me thinking about other "not so good" signings during our SPL years - players who either came with fanfare and never made an impact, or some who just never got a chance.

    Ones that sprang to mind:

    Zibi Malkowski

    Richie Byrne

    Lionel Djebi-Zadi

    Thierry Gathuessi

    Tom Parratt

    Steven Watt

    Liam Fox

Alan Morgan (maybe I'm a bit harsh there)

    Darran Thomson

    Bajram Fatai

    Ben Jackson

    Dean McDonald

    Gary McSwegan

    Bryan Prunty

And perhaps McAllister and Sutherland if we include young players who we had high hopes for but who never reached their potential with us?

    Any others spring to mind?

For me, the thought of a veteran McSwegan leading the line for us under 10CC makes me cringe.

Some of course might suggest Niculae - considering he probably caused us more trouble than he was worth.

As i remember foxy was quite a good player and was a shame he was let go and he was with club before spl i believe.

As for alan morgan he was not the best and certainly a poor signing.

Watt, gatuhessi and byrne nevr got a break in team to be seen as bad or not.

McSwegan and zibi were awful signings.

If i was to add to the list although a club legend the re-signing of golly was poor i would add blumenstien to this list also as simply doesn't cut it in spl.

Tbh I thought the re-signing of Golly was a real turning point in our season last year. Until he came back we were stuck with Zadi at Left Back. I also think his performance up against Leigh Griffiths at Dens (2-2) was superb.

  2. Scrap the "Win at all costs" mentality of youth coaching and teach how to play the game with a focus on technical ability.

    I totally agree.

However it will never happen unless the SFA is overhauled completely and new foreign coaches come in to teach the Scottish ones how to coach properly. Much like France did when they failed to qualify for USA '94.

This is the way forward! It'll benifit the quality of football watched on a Saturday and will also improve the national team IMO!

  3. Fair play to Pardew he has had a good start - 9 points from 12 I think. I was gutted when Hughton got sacked as NUFC have always been my English team but we can't blame Pardew for Hughton's sack so(and Ashley's stupidity) I've got to give him credit. He has started well!

  4. Not a great game! St Johnstone were probably the better side and were worthy of their victory. Duberry at the back was very solid and I can't recall him making a mistake. Morris pulled the strings for them and even Duff who looked like he was told to man mark him didn't cope very well.

We were very poor especially 1st half. Rooney must be so frustrated at the lack of (quality) service he is getting. The long ball to Rooney's head wasn't working - Duberry was coping easily. IMO Rooney is most effective when he gets the ball to feet and can hold it up and bring in Eric/Jonny/Richie. Esson was again sublime and after Camy Bell's performance against us he is surely ahead of him in Levin's plans. Too many of our players didn't perform. Gil was pretty ineffective but he may just be lacking match sharpness. I think he may still have something to offer especially when Jonny is back and we can counter-attack with more pace. Don't know if Butcher was resting Duncan or if he was dropped but IMO we missed his bite and determination even if a few of his passes sometimes go astray.

Ross and Shinnie were IMO our 2 best outfielders. Ross was at least having a go at the defence.

Hopefully we can regroup and gain some confidence from a solid performance vs Elgin! :ictscarf:

  5. He has been unlucky with the timing of his injury but I still feel he should be used more frequently by Butcher as a sub (especially at home)! He did miss a lot of chances in SFL but he's very creative and will add a bit in the last 20 minutes of games. I like him as a player!

  6. I presume McGregor probably started moving off his line, so Hayes didn't do the normal thing of cutting it back. Perhaps he should have but I can't really blame him.

Is it just me or does Adam Rooney look a real player? I don't mean a decent lower end of the SPL player but if Goodwillie is the best young Scottish talent outside the OF, then Rooney looks a more complete player. His holding up play is spot on, plus he scores. The sky's the limit.

Yeh I agree about Adam! He's been getting on top of and been bulying defenders recently. Just hope we can hold on to him!
