Getting back to the Citadel - I know that my mate, Donnie Nelson's (goalkeeper of Dalneigh United) father - Henry Nelson - was goalkeeper for the Citadel, but I do not know in which years. They lived about 5 or 7 Laurel Avenue.

7 pounds 7 shillings every fortnight was NOT a just reward for all the disruption to your life that National Service entailed. for two whole years.
Couldn't agree more - BUT - 7 Pounds 7 shillings ! Blimey, in the navy we only got 25 shillings a fortnight in 1954 !!!

Much ado about nothing then--or so it appears from a long distance perspective anyway. DOH!
But you have scuppered my plan for Caley and Clach to merge so I am raising my eyes to heaven and uttering one IHE's whistles. In my case though it's just despair-air because unless they do then I just don't see the fans of the town merging either and that's a real pity.
To succeed , real change is often necessary and often that means a merger --- of money, title and heart. i.e everybody's shoulder to the wheel!
But it looks to me, based on the comments above, that Clach is now never going to be a candidate for higher things and so why not just merge. I mean, just look at the general decline in Caley's fan base to date of those who actually attend games--meaning a huge negative in the prospects of building savings for the future. Has this signal message penetrated the minds of the owners or managers of Caley Thistle yet? They are not going to support the club financially for ever and a day so either the penny drops for all concerned or Caley will continue to slide farther down into mediocracy and financial despair .
And then what? I'll tell you--mediocracy alright and no Scottish cup , yes to continuing dwindling crowds, little finance available to bring on the youngsters and less and less real interest by the general population of Inverness. And, perhaps, even the dissolution of the club...?
Please, Pimple - don't talk like that !

I remember yourself and the Dalneigh Utd team well. I used to stand on the touchline with my elder brother Don. I was in the Youth Club briefly in 1955/6. My family lived at 49 Laurel Avenue.
Charles. You are correct on all of your points. I now recall the wind blowing through the fence surrounding the new primary school in the mid fifties. In the middle of the night the sound was terrifying (especially if you had`just seen one of the La Scala horror films.)
The Rooneys moved into 55 Laurel Avenue in 1949.
Hamish MacIntyre was at the church in the mid fifties. He officiated when I got married in the brick church in 1960. I seem to recall the brick church replacing the wooden hut about the same time as the primary school was built.
June the 20th 1955 - now just over 64 years married by Hamish !

The Inverness Welfare League was first set up by Harry Munro about 1950 (who I remember had a daughter, Hazel!). He was the sport reporter for the Highland News and Football Times. Surely he had an obituary that I can't find anywhere ? Maybe you can ???

I was at that game come to think of it! I think Caley must have got an early opener since I remember one waggish Jaggie (it might have been Dave Williamson) cracking up the whole stand with a shout of "Come on Jags - Caley are playing for time!"
One observation I'd have to make is that for an Inverness Derby cup final at an Inverness venue over 30 years ago between two teams both in quite successful periods of their history, the crowd does look a bit sparse. That's an observation which might challenge claims about crowd size in "the old days" although I do appreciate that far more attended for instance in the immediate post-war years.
Also, if that's all the joint crowd that could be assembled even for a big occasion as described..... then where did all these post-1994 "refuseniks" we keep getting told about actually come from?
I don't recognise the ground - where was that game played ? That guy in Canada would agree with me, I'm sure, it was so good to hear the Inverness accents from the crowd (best English spoken in the World!) !

That is a great film, the crowd just as entertaining as the game.
One thing I noticed: at 4.24-4.27 in the bottom of the shot there is a man who looks mixed-race and I was curious if anyone knew who that might be.
Don't suppose there were many non-whites in the town at the time.
I THINK his surname was KaKa (not sure of the spelling) who lived opposite 65 Caledonian Road in Dalneigh !
