Play Off Despair Ahead of kick off it was out of our hands with Queens Park holding all the aces. To escape the play offs, we had to better what Queens Park did against Airdrie. First and foremost we had to ensure we did not lose and hope that the Spiders dropped points at Hampden versus the Diamonds on the last night of the regular season. Both sides were missing some important players for this game with Morton undefeated in their last five visits to the Caledonian Stadium. It was a lovely evening for a game of football, what could possibly go wrong? Well, what did go wrong was Queen's Park beat an understrength Airdrie 2-0 at Hampden, therefore despite beating Morton 3-1, Inverness head for the play-offs. Morgan Boyes opened the scoring with a thumping volley after half an hour. Kirk Broadfoot benefited from slack defending to level before the break then proceeded to earn the wrath of the home support with an embarrassing celebration in front of the North Stand. Cammy Harper relieved Billy Mckay of penalty kick duties and duly slotted home from the spot ten minutes after the break. The scoring was completed just after the hour when Sean McAllister drilled home into the bottom corner. Robbie Muirhead had been sent off for simulation then taking a wee fit to himself and was promptly sent off after 58 minutes just after Harper had knocked in his penalty kick, probably aggrieved that he never earned a spot kick for his dramatic dive. When news of Queen's Park going two up filtered through to the North Stand and the familiar tactic of sideways passing reared it's ugly head, the home fans turned their frustration to the main culprit, and chants of Gardiner Gardiner GTF rang round the home end. So, it's off to meet the Gable Endies for us on Tuesday 7th May with the return at the Caledonian Stadium on Saturday 11th May. Samson Lawal looked up for it when he came on and gave us another dimension. Cammy Harper did brilliantly to ignore the distraction attempts by keeper Ryan Mullen before slotting the penalty in.   Last Chance   It's the last chance in the last chance saloon for us if we want to avoid the dreaded relegation play offs with some olde adversaries licking their lips in anticipation that our insipid non scoring bunch of mercenaries will be the final piece of the relegation jigsaw. Morton are the visitors on Friday night whilst Queens Park host Airdrieonians. Waiting eagerly for us to drop in are perrenial hoodoo sides Hamilton Academicals and Alloa Athletic with Montrose, complete with Michael Gardyne and other journeymen and one Brazilian Matteus Machado, who spent some time at Inverness as a promising youth. However, first things first, it's Dougie Imrie's Morton side who come North looking to sign off their season on a high. Did Dougie dodge a bullet with Duncan Ferguson pulling the managerial rug from under his feet to get the Caley Jags gig. Thankfully, in stark contrast, the second half was full of entertainment. In a lifeless first half at the Caledonian Stadium, neither side was able to get the handful of fans inside the ground excited, however, just before the interval Aaron Doran made a half yard of space for himself inside the box and fired a wicked shot at Rogers. He parried the shot away and James Keatings guided the loose ball back into the net from ten yards. One minute into the second half and Keatings bagged his second as he rifled the ball home from 12 yards on the right side of the box. The third came about after a good bit of ball retention ended with Jordan White rolling the ball into the net. Mark Ridgers saved a miserable penalty from Nicky Cadden after David Carson handled from an overhead attempt. Coll Donaldson met a corner from Keatings at the front post to nod down into the net to make it four nil. Substitute Nikolay Todorov got into the act and drilled one past Rogers from 18 yards, and there endeth the scoring. (click on above score for full report) How did we get into this mess: Take a bow the Inverness board and CEO. Well, where do you start. It was clear from the begining of the season that something was wrong. Poor signings, dismal performances in the League Cup followed by an abysmal start to the League campaign saw Billy Dodds removed from his position after winning one point in the first six Championship fixtures and replaced by a man with no track record as a manager. A sort of publicity stunt if you like. After the initial new manager bounce wore off, we found ourselves little better off with Big Dunc than we were with wee Billy. We did claw ourselves up to the coat tails of others but the most damning part of our season has been our inability to score goals, especially at home. Only already relegated Arbroath are worse than us. Our team is now full of mercenaries, loan players with no affiliation to our Highland pedigree and many fans have tagged us as being the worst squad ever in our short history. Where are the Golabeck's, Tokeley's, Wilson's..... Much of this can be attributed to our lack of financial nous in the boardroom, failed ventures and now the begging bowls are being put in place to save our club. Having drawn at Dunfermline last week thanks to Aribim Pepple's first goal for the club combined with Billy Mckay's penalty miss, it's now out of our own hands. Out of our hands now This was our most important game of the season and a tough one at the best of times. No major changes from the defeat at home to Raith Rovers although Aaron Doran had twisted his knee and is done. Sean McAllister started and Billy Mckay captained the side with Devine and Lawal on the bench. Dunfermline are safe in no mans land but will want to end their season with a flourish at home. Kane started up front for the Pars with Jakubiak and O'Halloran on the bench. Surprise surprise it ended all square after goals from Benedictus and Inverness substitute Aribim Pepple who saved Billy Mckay's blushes after the striker once again failed to strike from the spot. Alas, Queens Park ensured Arbroath's tools stayed on the floor with a 5-0 thrashing of the Smokies. A must win next week or it's the play-offs for us. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The penultimate game of the season, unless we drop into the play-off games, kicked off on a bright afternoon at the KDM Group East End Park with Dunfermline getting the game underway and Kyle Benedictus booked within two minutes. It was a cagey opening littered with fouls. First serious attempt in the game came from Chris Kane after twenty minutes when he was denied by Ridgers from close range and moments later the big keeper also saved from Paul Allan as he shot from outside the box. Owen Moffat looked lively and his shot from left side of the box was saved down low by Ridgers with Kane looking to snap up any loose ball. Fifteen minutes before the break and the hosts were getting on top but a James Carragher header reminded them that the visitors were still in the game, Mehmet tipping over for a corner. Five minutes before the break Alex Samuel was denied by Mehmet. Two minutes later Benedictus opened the scoring after he latched onto a ball bouncing around the Inverness box to head home. Allan shot over on half time and a stoppage time corner for Inverness came to nothing. Half time at EEP and news filtering through that Queens Park are thrashing Arbroath 3-0. Meh! HALF TIME: 1-0 No changes at the break as the visitors restarted the game and Mathew Todd saw an effort from the right saved by Ridgers at the expense of a corner five minutes in. Ooooft! Out of the blue, penalty to Inverness conceded by Moffat with a hand ball. Taken by Billy Mckay and as at Inverness, it was a Sunday Pub League penalty saved by the keeper. FFS!!! Todd fired well over as the Pars looked for a second goal with half an hour left for Inverness to salvage something from a shocker of a season, Sean McAllister shot wide from inside the box. With twenty minutes left Aribim Pepple replaced Savage and Jakubiak replaced Kane. Substitute Pepple did well as he pulled Inverness level in the 75th minute from six yards, his first goal for the club in 13 limited appearances, and moments later Roddy MacGregor replaced spot kick sinner Billy Mckay. Pepple was denied a second by Mehmet and McAllister had one deflected into the keeper as Inverness went for broke. Dunfermline made it an edgy finish with three corners in quick succession but it ended all square, the fourth draw between the sides this season. FULL TIME: 1-0 It ended in disappointment for the 319 visiting fans with news that Queens Park had hammered Arbroath 0-5. To rub salt into the wounds, Sheridan and Welsh were amongst the scorers. It's out of our hands now, but it's a must win next Friday and hope Queens Park falter. Inverness play Morton and Queens play Airdrie. A draw might be enough, but it's a long shot. I'm not convinced that Billy Mckay was the right man to be taking that penalty, his second failure from the spot in successive games against the Pars. Play Offs Looming Down to the nitty gritty now as we enter the last two games still in the danger zone and just one point ahead of Queens Park who, as it happens, face Arbroath, the very club that Big Dunc said might have downed tools by now! You couldn't write it, could you. In fairness, Dunfermline have nothing to play for but pride, and a few shekels, does that mean that they will also down tools? Have a word with yourself if you answered yes. The final day of the season next Friday night has Queens Park at home to Airdrie and Inverness at home to Morton. It's going to the wire. At the moment, it's still in our own hands, but it's not over until the fat lady sings. Our first encounter was at East End Park after we had gained promotion. That didn't end well, a 4-0 defeat, an early injury to Barry Wilson after 6 minutes, a Pars penalty before half time and a red card for Andrew Allan after 66 minutes. Ian Broadfoot's summary of that game: The reality of the First Division hit Caley Thistle hard in this opening league fixture as they slumped to a 4-0 defeat. They were hit by an early injury to Barry Wilson and Andrew Allan was ordered off in the 66th minute for a tackle on Brian Reid. Caley Thistle were only one down at half time to an Andy Smith penalty, but were overwhelmed in the second half. A Brian Reid low drive in 61 minutes made it 2-0 then came the ordering-off. Given our financial plight, the mere existence of our club functioning as it is just now is a growing concern. Going down may well be the catalyst for part time football and seasons in the doldrums should we survive. The ultimate price to pay for failure is plain for all to see. LAST TIME OUT The Caley Jags battered Raith Rovers to a 0-1 defeat at the Caledonian Stadium last Friday night, thanks mainly to a worldy performance by Raith keeper Kevin Dabrowski and his woodwork. Ably assisted by our inability to stick the ball into the net, we snatched defeat from the jaws of a comfortable victory. In terms of performance, everything was positive. In terms of result, it was a disaster. We can't fault the players for effort, but the season long issue of not taking our chances reared it's ugly head big time. It certainly looks likely that some familiar faces will not be here next season. LAST SIX: L D L W W L Dunfermline drew 0-0 with Queens Park at EEP last week as Queens showed plenty of resilience to deny their hosts. The Pars saw the better of the game in a dour scoreless encounter that ensured they have nothing left to play for and QP remained below us in the table. I'm sure Pars' aim will be to finish with a flourish especially at home in front of their own fans and of course the extra £££ for places. Sean McAllister returning was a bonus though but the mystery deepens as to why Roddy MacGregor, Austin Samuels and Nikola Ujdur are not featuring either on the injury list or the team list. Baffling to be honest as Roddy has the midfield attributes required, Austin has the speed and potential and Nikola in my opinion, if fit, would be my first choice on the team sheet. Are these guys on the way out? Add to that seven or eight loan players, then next season will see a massive restructure and rebuild at the Caledonian Stadium.
