Dunfermline 0-1 Inverness CT - SPL

New Grass at EEP

Club Historian Ian Broadfoot reports on the match against Dunfermline at East End Park. This game saw the return of manager Craig Brewster to his old stomping ground and Dunfermline's first home game of the season on real grass after being told to replace the plastic pitch.
Last November Liam Fox came off the bench and scored at Dunfermline to earn Caley Thistle a point. He did the same at Kilmarnock and Dundee but this time he went one better. He replaced the injured Richard Hastings in the 25th minute and his goal just before half time proved to be the winner. This was Dunfermline 's first home game of the season after reluctantly replacing their plastic pitch with grass.

The Pars pushed forward from the start and in 10 minutes Greg Shields headed over from 12 yards after good work by Simon Donnelly down the left. A Lee Makel corner in 14 minutes was headed goalwards by Scott Thomson but Mark Brown tipped it over. Four minutes later a Stuart Golabek header at the other end was taken by Bryn Halliwell. Mark Burchill shot high over the visitors' bar in 21 minutes then Golabek hit wide of Halliwell's goal. Close to the break ICT substitute Liam Fox collected a Darren Dods pass at the edge of the Dunfermline box and drove a tremendous shot past Halliwell. A Darren Young shot hit Darren Dods as the whistle loomed and the home fans claimed hand ball – the referee disagreed.
Half Time: 0-1
Into the second half and in 53 minutes Halliwell took two attempts to save Craig Dargo's turn and shot. Dunfermline 's closest effort of the second period came in 70 minutes when Makel hit the bar from 30 yards. Six minutes from time a Makel 25 yard shot went narrowly past.
Another excellent ICT performance and fifth place retained.

Inverness CT 0-1 Rangers - SPL

Keeper saves the points for visitors
ICT club historian Ian Broadfoot reports from the Tulloch Caledonian stadium on the league match against the reigning SPL champions Rangers.

Saturday 6th August 2005  Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, Inverness  INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE  0 {mosimage}Brown, Tokely, Dods, Munro, Hastings, Wilson (Fox 86), Black, McBain (Hart 82), Golabek, Dargo (Hislop 75), Brewster Subs – Duncan, Proctor, Parratt & Fraser  RANGERS (Alec McLeish)  1 (Ferguson 69) {mosimage}Waterreus, Ricksen, Buffel, Andrews, Ferguson⚽, Rae (Malcolm 84), Prso (Thompson 72), Novo, FanFan, Murray, Lovenkrands Subs – Rodriguez, Smith, Adam, McCormack & Klos  Referee  C Murray  Attendance  7512  Man of the Match  Darren Dods (ICT)
Rangers took all three points on their first competitive visit to Inverness but it took two top-class saves from ‘keeper Ronald Waterreus to deny Caley Thistle at least a point. A record crowd of 7512 (plus over 100 freeloaders on the A9 embankment) watched a pulsating game which really could have gone either way.
A Dado Prso long shot was blocked by the home defence in four minutes then Peter Lovenkrands hit the first of a number of shots off target. Roy McBain hit high over the Rangers goal in ten minutes then Craig Dargo created a fine opening for Craig Brewster four minutes later - Dargo sent a measured pass to the player/manager 18 yards out but he hit it first time over the bar. Just after the half hour mark a Grant Munro long throw into the Rangers box led to a sequence of headers then a blocked Brewster shot. The clearance fell to Barry Wilson on the right and his cross was headed goalwards by Darren Dods from close range. Somehow Waterreus reached it to deny what looked like a certain goal. Ross Tokely went down in the Rangers box just before the break but play was waved on. Right on the whistle a Barry Ferguson free kick from the left flashed just wide of Mark Brown's post.
Half Time: 0-0
A Lovenkrands shot was blocked by Tokely just into the second half then Nacho Novo went down in the box alongside Dods – the vocal Rangers support screamed for a penalty but nothing was given. Rangers continued to press and a Ferguson shot was deflected for a corner just on the hour mark. A Novo angled shot was punched clear by Brown then Waterreus dived to collect a long shot from Stuart Golabek. The winning goal came from a fast break upfield and good work by Prso on the right of the ICT box. He took on two defenders but managed to cut the ball back from the goal-line to Ferguson in support. The Rangers skipper neatly hit it past Brown from a couple of yards out. His celebrations with the crowd behind the goal earned him a yellow card. Novo looked odds-on to score in 74 minutes but he mishit from a good position. The home crowd were livid when Alex Rae took Wilson out of the play in 78 minutes and the referee saw nothing wrong. Lovenkrands shot over with five minutes left then Caley Thistle laid siege to the Rangers box in the last few minutes. A Liam Fox shot was blocked, Golabek shot over from 18 yards then a throw into the box from Munro was cleared amidst chaos. With two minutes of added time gone Ian Black headed down the left, found Fox infield then the ball reached Richie Hart just outside the box – he hammered the ball goalwards but Waterreus produced his second international quality save of the day to deny the equaliser. Hart held his head in despair and the Rangers camp breathed a sigh of relief as the final whistle sounded.
Full Time: 0-1
Caley Thistle were beaten and disappointed but they could be proud of a good performance.

Falkirk 0-2 Inverness CT - SPL

Ian Broadfoot, ICT Historian reports on the opening day victory against Falkirk at the Westfield Stadium where Caley Thistle manager manager Craig Brewster leads by example and starts his goalscoring account for the season with double.

Saturday 30th July 2005  Falkirk Stadium  FALKIRK  0 Team: Glennon, Lawrie, McPherson (Scally 87), Ireland, Gow (McBreen 76), Latapy, Duffy, Lima, O'Neil (O'Donnell 87), Thomson, Rodrigues
Subs – MacKenzie, McStay, Milne & Hill
INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE  2 (Brewster 57,82) Team: Brown, Proctor, Dods, Munro, Hastings, Wilson, Black, McBain, Golabek, Brewster, Dargo (Hislop 65)
Subs – Hart, Duncan, Parratt, Fox, McAllister & Fraser
Referee  J Underhill  Attendance  4561  Man of the Match  Vitor Lima (Falkirk)  It was party time for Falkirk as they made their bow in the SPL but the visitors, and Craig Brewster in particular, took the edge of the day with a hard-fought victory. The First Division flag was ceremoniously hoisted at the magnificent Falkirk Stadium and Caley Thistle vice chairman Graeme Bennett presented Falkirk chairman Campbell Christie with a quaich to mark the occasion.
With the pleasantries over it was down to business.
The Bairns took the game to Caley Thistle with the high-decibel backing of a large crowd desperate for three points. Russell Latapy was a constant threat but some splendid defending held him in check. Alan Gow raced goalwards in the first minute and it took the combined efforts of David Proctor and Stuart Golabek to clear the danger. A Latapy pass into the box just failed to reach Gow then in the twelfth minute Latapy was sent clear by Steven Thomson and it took an excellent Proctor tackle on the edge of the box to stop him. A Gow corner in 26 minutes was pushed away by Mark Brown then he palmed a second corner before the move ended with a Latapy off-target shot. Brown dived low to save from Latapy in 32 minutes then the same player shot just over. It was not all one way traffic and debutant Craig Dargo had a chance in 38 minutes. The ball broke to the left goal-line as ‘keeper Matt Glennon came out and failed to collect. The goal was open but the angle was virtually impossible and the ball ran over for a goal-kick. The best first half chance for ICT fell to Barry Wilson five minutes before the break after Brewster dummied a Richard Hastings pass – Wilson 's drive went wide.
Half Time 0-0
The visitors created much more in the second period but not before Brown had to save at the feet of Darryl Duffy a mere 30 seconds into the half. A minute later Ian Black played a one-two with Wilson who then hit a strong low shot from 25 yards – it beat Glennon but bounced off the post to safety. The home fans were silenced in 57 minutes when a Stuart Golabek ball into the Falkirk box reached Brewster - he headed left as Glennon rushed out and scored from an acute angle despite the desperate efforts of captain Craig Ireland. Some needle crept in and Latapy went down in the box twice in succession. Referee John Underhill ignored the penalty claims to the fury of the home fans. Victory was assured eight minutes from time when a Roy McBain low ball into the box was swept home from six yards by Brewster. Falkirk threw everything at the ICT defence in the last few minutes and the old cliché of a stramash was very appropriate when Brown saved well from Duffy and the resultant corner was eventually scrambled clear. A minute over time a Duffy overhead kick was held by Brown then Glennon at the other end collected a Golabek chip.
Full Time 0-2
Hearts and ICT were the only SPL winners so shared top spot with Hearts given the edge as they scored four goals. A fine start to ICT's second season in the SPL – on the eleventh anniversary of the club's first official game following unification in 1994.

Ross County 2-1 Inverness CT - Pre-Season

Pre-Season 'Friendly'

Caley Thistle club historian Ian Broadfoot reports on the friendly match at Victoria Park in Dingwall against former ICT manager, John Robertson's Ross County side.

Saturday 23rd July 2005  Victoria Park, Dingwall  ROSS COUNTY  2 (McGarry 49, Burke pen80) TEAM: McCaldon (Garden 46), Cowan, Zadi, Webb, Canning, Tiernan (Cowie 72), Rankin ( Hamilton 82), McCulloch, Higgins (McKinlay 70), McGarry (Burke 77), Winters (Macdonald 82)
No unused subs
INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE  1 (Brewster 87) TEAM: Brown, Proctor, Dods, Munro, Hastings, Wilson, Black, Hart (Fox 68), Golabek, Brewster, Bayne (Hislop 70)
Subs – Parratt, Duncan, McBain, Prunty, McAllister, Finnigan & Fraser
Referee  S MacDonald  Attendance 1000  Man of the Match
A friendly in name but played with a passion akin to a cup tie. Caley Thistle dominated the first half and it looked as if they had to score – to the dismay of the visiting fans the superiority was not translated into goals. John Robertson clearly stirred up his new team at the interval and County looked a different side in the second half. Their determination paid off with two goals although a stirring ICT finish almost forced a draw. Ian Black shot wide in eight minutes, a David Proctor effort was smothered then Richard Hastings found space in the County box but could not take full advantage. It was 21 minutes before Mark Brown was troubled – an easy take from Mark McCulloch. The pattern continued for the rest of the first half with the best chance coming in 42 minutes when a Darren Dods header was cleared off the line by John Rankin. County's second half resurgence paid dividends in 49 minutes when a Steve McGarry wonder strike from long range flew into Brown's top corner before he could move. The lead was doubled in 80 minutes when Grant Munro upended Rankin and Alex Burke hammered home the resultant penalty. David Winters nearly made it three a minute later but Brown brilliantly tipped away his shot. With three minutes left a Barry Wilson cross from the right was headed in by Craig Brewster to throw ICT a lifeline. The visitors laid siege to the County goal in the last few minutes – the game ran to three added minutes despite John Robertson's remonstrations with assistant referee John Bicknell. A Brewster shot was blocked, a Proctor header was booted away, a Liam Fox drive was cleared off the line by Martin Canning then there were claims for a penalty amidst chaos in the County box. It remained 2-1 to County and Craig Brewster was left with much food for thought for the SPL campaign. For County it was a satisfying victory which will give them confidence for the new season.

Inverness CT 1-0 Blackpool - FRIENDLY

Oh I do like to be beside the seaside.....

Club historian Ian Broadfoot reports on the pre-season match at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium against Colin Hendry's Blackpool side.

Saturday 16th July 2006  Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, Inverness  INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE  1 (Hart 49) Team: Brown, Tokely (Parrat 80), Dods, Munro, Hastings, Proctor (Wilson 46), Black (Duncan 46), Hart⚽ (Fox 60), Golabek (McBain 76), Dargo, Bayne (Brewster 83)
Subs – Hislop, Prunty, Finnigan, McAllister & Fraser
BLACKPOOL  0 Team: Jones, McGregor, Edwards (Grayson 46), Doolan (Anderson 87), Butler (Coid 23), Clarke (Wiles 81), Parker (Blinkhorn 80), Southern (Donnelly 83), Murphy (Shaw 87), Vernon (Baldry 70), Prendergast (Burns 70)
Subs – Edge & Doughty
Referee  M Ritchie  Attendance  827  Man of the Match
Blackpool 's northern tour ended with this 1-0 defeat. Colin Hendry's side proved to be formidable opposition but the home side grabbed a narrow victory. The afternoon proved a confusing one for the spectators as both sides named 11 substitutes and players seemed to come and go at will during the second half. The first half was rather tame with the best chances being created by the visitors. In the first minute Blackpool 's Keith Southern hit the post. The impressive Keigan Parker ran clear down the right in 21 minutes and sent over a cross which Rory Prendergast headed past. Graham Bayne shot low and wide in 26 minutes then Lee Jones saved from Bayne as the first half drew to a close. The succession of substitutes spoiled the flow of the game but the second half was still much livelier than the first. Caley Thistle took the lead in 49 minutes when they were awarded a free kick 19 yards out and Richie Hart netted it via the wall. Mark Brown made some good saves at the other end to deny Parker on three occasions – his angled effort in 72 minutes nearly fooled Brown but he tipped it away. Matthew Blinkhorn was through in 81 minutes but Brown dived to touch it clear. The home side rarely troubled Jones in the second half but in the final minute Roy McBain ran through the defence and shot over. A good run-out for a remarkable 37 players and a satisfying win for Craig Brewster's men.
