Inverness CT 1-2 Motherwell - SPL

Ian Broadfoot reports on the match between Caley Thistle and Motherwell at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium. Craig Brewster tops the SPL scoring charts but another goal is not enough to see off Motherwell in what was certainly a game of two halves.

Saturday 10th September 2005  Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, Inverness  INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE  1 (Brewster 24) Team: Brown, Tokely, Dods, Munro, Golabek, Wilson, Black, Fox (Wyness 63), McBain (Morgan 82), Dargo (Hart 75), Brewster
Subs - Duncan, Hastings, Proctor & Fraser
MOTHERWELL (Terry Butcher)  2 (McDonald 66, Kinniburgh 69) Team: G Smith, Hammell, Kerr, Craigan, McDonald, Foran (Paterson 74), O'Donnell, A Smith (Clarkson 85), Hamilton,Quinn (McLean 65), Kinniburgh
Subs - Keogh, Connolly, Smith & Meldrum
Referee  I Fyfe  Attendance  4018  Man of the Match  Mark Brown (ICT)
A major disappointment for Caley Thistle after an excellent start, a goal from Craig Brewster and pressure for a second. Motherwell's second half revival changed all that and, in the end, the margin of defeat could easily have been greater. From the start all traffic headed towards Graeme Smith's goal and, in the third minute, a Ross Tokely ball from the right reached Barry Wilson in the box. A grounded Wilson tussled with Smith but he could only send it back to Tokely and it was eventually cleared. Stuart Golabek hit high over the bar a minute later then a Liam Fox 25 yard shot was blocked. Craig Dargo nearly set up his manager in 12 minutes when he beat Stephen Craigan down the left but his cross was intercepted. Seconds later a Motherwell attack led to a sliced Scott McDonald shot in the box. A good spell for the visitors saw Grant Munro clear at the feet of Richie Foran then Mark Brown hold a header from Jim Hamilton. A rising 25 yard shot from Fox was held by Smith in 16 minutes then a Wilson cross into the box was headed for a corner by Craigan. Motherwell had a good chance to take the lead in 22 minutes when McDonald beat three defenders and set up Foran on the left of the box - his complete mishit from a good position was a let-off. Play switched ends and Wilson earned and took a free kick from wide right. A Brewster header came off the post and Munro's follow-up was deflected for a corner. Wilson's flag kick was headed home by Brewster for 1-0 - Stevie Hammell cleared but it was judged to be over the line. Smith saved well from Brewster in 28 minutes then Hammell similarly tested Brown at the other end. Phil O'Donnell's flick looked goal-bound in 33 minutes but Darren Dods stepped in to clear. In 37 minutes Brewster found Ross Tokely on the right and his early centred ball set Craig Dargo one-on-one with Smith. Dargo looked odds-on to score but Smith did well to save his side from going 2-0 down. As the half drew to a close Brown earned his Man-of-the-Match award with brilliant close-range saves from McDonald and Hamilton.
Half Time: 1-0
Motherwell came out for the second half rejuvenated and in just 20 seconds Foran raced through but shot wide. Their efforts bore fruit in 66 minutes when McDonald broke away and sent a low angled ball past Brown after beating Tokely at the edge of the box. A mere three minutes later substitute Brian McLean crossed from the right and William Kinniburgh headed in at the back post to give Motherwell the lead. Caley Thistle were always on the back foot after that and with ten minutes left a Jim Paterson close range shot hit the bar and bounced just short of the line. With two minutes left Ian Black sent substitute Alan Morgan on a run down the left but he was well tackled as he headed goalwards. In the last minute McDonald was given far too much room in the Caley Thistle box as he rose to head a Paterson cross but it was a fraction wide. A final burst from the home side came to nothing and Motherwell took the points.
Full Time: 1-2
ICT remain sixth after six games.

Dundee Utd 1-1 Inverness CT - SPL

Club historian Ian Broadfoot reports on the league match against Dundee United at Tannadice Park, Dundee. Craig Brewster added to his tally for the season against one of his old sides.

Sunday 28th August 2005  Tannadice Park, Dundee  DUNDEE UTD (Gordon Chisholm)  1 (Miller 66) Team: Stillie, Kenneth, Ritchie, Archibald, Wilson, Kerr, Brebner, Fernandez, Robson, Samuel (McIntyre 28), Miller⚽
Subs – McCracken, Duff, Dodds, Crawford, Cameron, Samson
INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE  1 (Brewster 84) Team: Brown, Tokely, Dods, Munro, Golabek, Wilson, Black, McBain, Fox (Hart 71), Brewster⚽, Dargo (Wyness 78)
Subs – Duncan, Proctor, Parratt, Morgan & Fraser
Referee  E Smith  Attendance  6718  Man of the Match
This match was moved by 24 hours to give Dundee United an extra day to recover from the second leg of their UEFA cup tie against MyPa-47 of Finland . In the event they drew 2-2 after being 2-0 up and lost on the away goals rule – the question was whether Caley Thistle would benefit from the trauma of this loss. In the event honours were even and the draw extended ICT's remarkable SPL away undefeated record which goes back to last January.
Craig Brewster was given much food for thought following the midweek 6-1 demolition of Alloa but he decided to retain the starting eleven from last week's draw with Kilmarnock .
The visitors started well and a free kick from Brewster was blocked in the second minute. United could easily have taken the lead in seven minutes when David Fernandez's low shot beat Mark Brown but bounced off the post. Ross Tokely then headed wide and, at the other end, a Barry Robson shot deflected but was gathered by Brown. 12 free kicks in 12 minutes disrupted play then, on the half-hour mark, a one-two between Wilson and Liam Fox led to a Fox shot and a fine save from Derek Stillie. Just before half time Paul Ritchie and Craig Dargo clashed in the box, Dargo went down but nothing was given. In first half added time a Wilson corner was headed wide by Brewster.
Half Time: 0-0
Ten minutes into the second half Dargo did net but offside was called. Stillie tipped over a Brewster shot in 59 minutes then Tokely headed wide. Despite the ICT pressure it was United who took the lead in 66 minutes. Alan Archibald's cross was headed home from close range by Lee Miller. This gave United renewed confidence and Brown saved from Miller before Robson shot wide. Caley Thistle introduced Dennis Wyness in 78 minutes and immediately he had a shot blocked by the United defence. Barry Wilson celebrated his 200th league appearance by providing the cross for Brewster's headed equaliser in 84 minutes. Brewster's legendary status at Tannadice is assured but it must have been sorely tested. With two minutes left Wyness bent the ball into the box and Brewster's low-power shot deflected to Stillie. In the dying seconds Stillie sent a long ball into the Caley Thistle half but Fernandez was caught offside.
Full Time: 1-1
A point apiece and Caley Thistle slip one place to sixth.

Inverness CT 6-1 Alloa - CIS League Cup

A shock in only the second minute when Alloa scored was soon forgotten as Caley Thistle eventually ran out 6-1 winners in this CIS Cup 2nd round match.
Six different scorers on the sheet as Inverness wrapped the game up before the break, Richie Hart with a thumping shot from the best part of forty yards with the pick of the goals.

Wednesday 24th August 2005  Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, Inverness  INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE  6 (Wilson 19, Hart 20, McBain 37, Duncan 42, Munro 47, Wyness 86) Team: Brown, Tokely (Parratt 57), Golabek, Proctor, Munro, Duncan, Wilson (McAllister 66), Wyness, Dargo, Hart, McBain (Fox 73)
Subs – Dods & Fraser
ALLOA (Tom Hendrie)  1 ( A Brown 2) Team: Evans, Walker, Thomson (Sloan 46), Bolochoweckyj, Townsley, Ovenstone, A Brown (Quitongo 46), Mortimer, Hamilton (G Brown 46), Stevenson, Nicolson
Subs – Greenhill & Ferguson
Referee  C Thomson  Attendance  917  Man of the Match  Dennis Wyness A comprehensive victory but only after an early fright. Craig Brewster rotated his squad and significantly rested himself in favour of Dennis Wyness. The result was some excellent football and spectacular goals.
An Alloa corner on the right in the second minute from former ICT player Darran Thomson led to a shock Alloa goal. The ball broke back to Thomson and his cross was bundled over the line by Andrew Brown. The tiny band of Alloa supporters in the south stand went wild but their optimism only lasted until the 19th minute. Craig Dargo was surrounded in the Alloa box but, with the help of a flick from Wyness, he found Barry Wilson supporting on the right – Wilson hammered a low ball home for the equaliser. A minute later Wilson tapped a 35 yard free kick to Richie Hart and he bulleted it home with ‘keeper James Evans rooted to the spot. It was all one way after that and in 37 minutes Wyness set up goal number three. He turned and twisted on the left edge of the box to find space then his ball into the centre was hit low into the net by Roy McBain. The fourth goal came just before the break following a good run through the centre from Craig Dargo. He had Hart in support on the left but chose to pass to Russell Duncan on the right of the box – he hit it first time high past Evans.
Half Time: 4-1
Three Alloa changes at the interval could not stop the rout but the arrival of Jose Quitongo did add some spark to the proceedings. Two minutes after the break ICT won a corner on the left and Hart’s kick was headed in by Grant Munro for 5-1. Perhaps not surprisingly the game went flat for a while but Alloa did try hard to come back. Ross Tokely robbed Robert Sloan on the edge of the box in 48 minutes then, on the hour mark, an excellent Quitongo shot was deflected by Tom Parratt for a corner. With ten minutes left a Hart curling ball from the right looked harmless but it nearly crept in and Evans had to push it away. In a late flurry a low Liam Fox long-range shot went wide then Evans dived to push away a Hart effort from 30 yards. ‘Man of the Match’ Wyness was rewarded for his hard work four minutes from time when he turned and hit home number six from 18 yards.
Full Time: 6-1
A good evening’s work against a plucky Alloa side.

Dennis Wyness has returned to Caley Thistle on what we understand is a season long loan and makes it straight onto the bench for todays game against Kilmarnock. The former Caley Thistle player has fallen further out of favour at Hearts since the takeover at Tynecastle and returns to a club where he is classed as a legend for his 80 goals.
3 Goals in this spell at the club will see him break Iain Stewart's goalscoring record of 82 goals and he is more than capable of doing that.

Inverness CT 2-2 Kilmarnock - SPL

Craig Brewster scores twice in the league match against Kilmarnock but it finishes all-square. Dennis Wyness returned to the club and was a surprise inclusion on the bench, but made an immediate impact when he set-up Brewster's second goal

Saturday 20th August 2005  Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, Inverness  INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE  2 (Brewster 39,72) Team: Brown, Tokely, Dods, Munro, Golabek, Wilson, Fox, Black (Duncan 90), McBain, Dargo (Wyness 71), Brewster (Hart 90)
Subs – Proctor, Parratt, McAllister & Fraser
KILMARNOCK (Jim Jefferies)  2 (Nish 70, Boyd 73) Team: Combe, Fowler, Hay, Lilley (Invincible 46), Greer, Ford, McDonald (Murray 63), Locke, Boyd, Johnston, Naismith (Nish)
Subs – Dodds, Dillon, Campbell, Smith
Referee  I Brines  Attendance  4119  Man of the Match  Craig Brewster (ICT)
A pulsating match played with all the passion and pace of a cup tie. There was a major boost for the home camp when Dennis Wyness was named in the squad following his arrival on loan from Hearts. He played for 19 minutes and his first touch set up Craig Brewster's second strike – a strong contender for ‘goal of the season'. The player/manager was once more the local hero when he doubled his season's tally to four goals.
Caley Thistle drove forward from the start and in the second minute an Ian Black cross just failed to set up Brewster. Two minutes later Brewster surged through but his low shot was cleared despite a deflection. Ex Killie man Craig Dargo sent an excellent cross from the right in ten minutes towards Brewster – a neat flick over the first defender was promising but a second defender cleared. ICT had a real chance to go ahead in the 16th minute when a penalty was given. Barry Wilson's ball into the box was handled needlessly by Gary Hay but it took the intervention of the referee's assistant before the award was made. Ross Tokely hit it low and to Alan Combe's left but the ‘keeper guessed correctly and pushed it away. The pressure on the Killie defence continued and the breakthrough came in the 39th minute. Tokely crossed from the right, Brewster tried to head it then recovered to side-foot the ball neatly past Combe. Just on the break a low ball from the goal-line by Tokely was beaten away by Combe.
Half Time: 1-0
Kilmarnock were clearly given a severe ear-bashing at half-time as they were a different side in the second half. Their cause was helped by the introduction of Danny Invincible who caused all sorts of problems down the right. A four minute spell settled the outcome of the points but not before a Colin Nish run was stopped by Darren Dods, Combe came out to collect ahead of Barry Wilson, Killie's Alan Johnston sent a curling 25 yard shot wide and both Nish and Black saw low shots held by the respective ‘keepers. In 70 minutes Invincible sent a cross from the right and Nish controlled it before hitting high into the net from the back of the box. A minute later Wyness came on to loud cheers and his first move ended with a pass to Brewster on the left edge of the box – with barely a check in his stride the player/manager hit an unbeatable shot past Combe and the home crowd roared their appreciation. Killie took just one more minute to reply when Gary Hay crossed from the left and Kris Boyd headed the equaliser with the defence posted missing. With five minutes left a Wilson pass reached Ian Black inside the box and Combe produced a terrific save to deny the young midfielder. Play was stopped for four minutes close to the end when Black took a serious knock and, after medical treatment on the pitch, he was stretchered off. Liam Fox let fly from 25 yards two minutes over time but it cleared the bar. Five minutes over the 90 it was Kilmarnock who threatened but the combined efforts of Nish and Hay could not find a way through to shoot.
Full Time: 2-2
The final whistle sounded on a match to remember and ICT retained fifth spot. A fine advert for the SPL - if all football was like this grounds would be bulging around the country for every game.

Dunfermline 0-1 Inverness CT - SPL

New Grass at EEP

Club Historian Ian Broadfoot reports on the match against Dunfermline at East End Park. This game saw the return of manager Craig Brewster to his old stomping ground and Dunfermline's first home game of the season on real grass after being told to replace the plastic pitch.
Last November Liam Fox came off the bench and scored at Dunfermline to earn Caley Thistle a point. He did the same at Kilmarnock and Dundee but this time he went one better. He replaced the injured Richard Hastings in the 25th minute and his goal just before half time proved to be the winner. This was Dunfermline 's first home game of the season after reluctantly replacing their plastic pitch with grass.

Saturday 13th August 2005  East End Park, Dunfermline  DUNFERMLINE  0 Team: Halliwell, Skerla (Hunt 81), Tod, Thomson, Shields, Mason, Darren Young, Makel, Morrison, Donnelly (Tarachulski 61), Burchill (Derek Young 72)
Subs – Murdoch, Labonte, Campbell, C Wilson
INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE  1 (Fox 42) Team: Brown, Tokely, Dods, Munro, Hastings (Fox 25 ⚽), Wilson (Hart 85), Black, McBain, Golabek, Dargo (Hislop 79), Brewster
Subs – Duncan, Proctor, Parratt, Fraser
Referee  C Thomson  Attendance  5005  Man of the Match
The Pars pushed forward from the start and in 10 minutes Greg Shields headed over from 12 yards after good work by Simon Donnelly down the left. A Lee Makel corner in 14 minutes was headed goalwards by Scott Thomson but Mark Brown tipped it over. Four minutes later a Stuart Golabek header at the other end was taken by Bryn Halliwell. Mark Burchill shot high over the visitors' bar in 21 minutes then Golabek hit wide of Halliwell's goal. Close to the break ICT substitute Liam Fox collected a Darren Dods pass at the edge of the Dunfermline box and drove a tremendous shot past Halliwell. A Darren Young shot hit Darren Dods as the whistle loomed and the home fans claimed hand ball – the referee disagreed.
Half Time: 0-1
Into the second half and in 53 minutes Halliwell took two attempts to save Craig Dargo's turn and shot. Dunfermline 's closest effort of the second period came in 70 minutes when Makel hit the bar from 30 yards. Six minutes from time a Makel 25 yard shot went narrowly past.
Another excellent ICT performance and fifth place retained.
