    Roy McBain, CTO Salutes You

      Teaser Paragraph:

Roy-McBain.jpgRoy Adam McBain was born in Aberdeen on 7th November 1974. He attended Dyce Academy and started playing organised football at the age of nine with Dyce Boys Club. He played with them until the age of sixteen before stepping up to the senior ranks.

Jim Maclean signed Roy at Tannadice where he started his senior football career in the 1991 season. Ivan Golac gave Roy his debut when he made a single appearance for the first team in the early part of the 1993-1994 season as a sub against St Johnstone.

In 1994 he made the short walk to Dens Park where he played six times for Dundee over the course of the next two seasons, and was part of the squad that reached the final of the Coca-Cola cup, losing 2-0 to the Dons. A talented left sided midfielder, Roy left Dens Park in 1996 and made his move to the Highlands, but not to his final destination.

He had made his way to the Third Division and slowly but surely started to establish himself in the Ross County side. Within three years, Roy had gained promotion with County, the first two attempts being narrowly missed by a couple of points.

Roy was gaining the respect of those that knew what he was all about. An energetic and honest professional with no shortage of skill, the 5ft 11in midfielder was beginning to attract attention for his dynamic performances for County, and his 16 goals in 121 games made Roy an asset for the watching scouts. A man with an eye for talent was keeping a close watch on Roy ... Steve Paterson.

'Pele' brought Roy up another level and into the first division with Inverness Caledonian Thistle in August 2000 on a free transfer, and Roy has never looked back. He has gone on to make 341 appearances for Inverness since then, scoring 20 times. He was the players' player of the year in season 2001-2002, and also collected the supporters player of the year award that same year. The '300' club is made up of those with over 300 appearances for ICT, and Roy is in good company there. Rossco tops that chart with 532, next comes Hastings (366), Wilson (353), Munro (344), Roy (341), Russell Duncan (336) and Charlie Christie on 314. Great achievement by all these players to commit to the cause. Roy has started in 147 SPL matches for the Caley Jags and he made his 300th appearance in September 2008. He has been used sparingly the last couple of seasons, but when asked to perform on the park, he fits into the team ethics effortlessly, noticable when asked to play a crucial game against Dunfermline last season in the title run in due to suspensions. You would have thought Roy had been playing all season and he was still full of running at time up.

Former managers Steve Paterson and John Robertson will be in charge of the Caley Thistle legends side which will also feature two other previous managers, Charlie Christie and Craig Brewster.

Jimmy Calder, Bobby Mann, Barry Wilson, Dennis Wyness, Paul Sheerin, Liam Keogh and Stuart McCaffrey amongst others will be here to strutt their stuff, and Roy has been quick to point out that he will surely be "guaranteed a start". He is really looking forward to meeting up with so many of the players that have been part of the rise of Inverness CT, and also a part of the success of Roy McBain.

An unassuming gentleman, Roy is one of the nicest blokes you could meet. His contribution to the cause at ICT has been immense over the years. Not one for hitting the headlines, but his energy, enthusiasm and tidy ball control have seen him used in various positions and his calming influence is reassuring for the fans when his name is on the team sheet. You know what you get when Roy McBain plays for your team and I hope he has a great night when the legends visit to show their appreciation and support for Roy, wife Judith, and their two children Lydia and Ruby.

I had a chat with Roy and asked him a few challenging questions, and some less taxing trivia.

Which team did you support as a boy? Aberdeen, (oooerrr Roy)
    Favourite band? Stone Roses
Which manager would you say had the biggest influence on your career? Jim McLean fashioned out my early career and pointed me in the right direction, so he would have been a major influence on me, but every manager has had some input in Roy McBain and I appreciate them all.
Who was the best player you have played with? Love them all
Who was the most difficult player you have played against? Barry Ferguson & Neil Lennon, skillful and tough opponents.
What was the best goal of your career? All enjoyable, but a special one for me was my first goal for ICT, against Morton in Inverness, nothing spectacular, but it meant a lot to me. Probably my most spectacular one was at Fir Park against Gretna, a 25 yarder off the underside of the bar, a collectors item, did I mention my goal at Pittodrie?
Most memorable game you were involved in? Ayr 4-3 cup game was fantastic, 1-0 Celtic cup win with Dennis scoring the winner, and of course, beating Aberdeen for the first time with me scoring the clincher, all great games.
Have you ever been sent off? Yes, three times, Alloa for abusive language, (unbelievable Roy), Clyde handball, the year we won promotion under Robbo and here's another unbelievable fact, Broonie saved the resultant penalty, 3-2 defeat at Tynecastle 2 bookings, I had a shocker that day, own goal and all.
Who signed you? Pele on a free from County.
How do you rate the present squad? As good as it's ever been, but don't tell the legends. The amount of young players we have and the level we are playing at must make this our strongest squad.
Any plans to go into coaching? I have just completed my 'B' licence, looking forward to coaching somewhere in the future.
Who is the present joker in the team? Hayes, Cox mischief makers and Duff not far behind.
Best career advice? Jim Maclean at Dundee United, as a young player trying to make it, I listened intently to what he was telling me, although all of the managers I've been with have helped me immensely one way or another.
Favourite ground? Tynecastle, the atmosphere is fantastic.
Biggest disappointment in your career? Relegation, absolutely devastated.
Have you ever been on CTO? No, but Judith might sneak on now and then.

     What makes Roy Tick?
Indian or Chinese? Indian. Chicken chilli garlic, yummee (number 47)
Who will win X factor? Matt Cardle
What car do you drive? Golf, silver, excellent drive
What is in your CD player? Kings of Leon, new album, Come Around Sundown
Favourite song? History, by the Verve
Favourite tipple? Lager, nice and cold
    Holiday destination? Italy
Karaoke or mime? Karaoke, I'll give it a try, just average
Can't cook - don't cook? Yes, Stir Fry's, Home cooking, like shepherds pie etc
    Scotsman or Sun? Sun
Sporting Hero? Maradona, but don't tell the Gaffer
Coronation Street or East Enders? No soap for Roy, unlike Golly and Russell
What would you have done if you were not a footballer? Don't know, it never happened
Favourite TV programme? Apprentice just now
    Cats or dogs? Dogs
Blonde or Brunette? Brunette (wise choice Roy)
Any nickname? Doss, at United, I think they thought I was too laid back
Favourite cartoon? Peppa Pig, kids love it
    Do you snore? Yes
    Beatles or Stones? Stones
    Favourite film? Goodfellas

Have a great night tonight Roy and rest assured that the fans appreciate everything you have done for Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Enjoy your evening and thanks for taking the time to answer the questions.
