CALEY JAGS JUST WANT TO GET HOME JOY OUT OF THEIR SYSTEM

More Headlines | Back to home page

    ANDREW DICKSON

    08:50 - 30 September 2006

Caley Jags boss Charlie Christie will change the system against Dunfermline in Inverness today - because of the way opposition teams now approach games in the Highland capital.

When Caley Jags first came into the SPL, opponents played open football on their trips north.

Inverness were the ones who usually profited - with the result that, in recent months, visiting teams have been more cautious.

That has led to Christie's men failing to win any of their five home games in the league and cup against top-flight clubs so far this season, losing to both St Mirren and Falkirk.

Consequently, Christie and his players worked on a different formation in training this week and are ready to shelve the standard 4-4-2 set-up they normally use.

Christie wants to close the clear gap between his midfielders and forwards. He insists it can be used without changing personnel, but it appears suited to players currently not in his starting 11 - such as Richie Hart and Liam Keogh.

Christie said: "I am very aware of the fact I want to change a team which is actually playing well at the moment. It is a strange thing to be considering.

"But I am also conscious of a need to get players into the final third of the park much faster.

"It is not rocket science. We just have to get support to the front men on a quick and regular basis and that is something we have been working on.

"Teams have changed the way they approach playing us when we are at home and, without second-guessing Jim Leishman, I'd imagine his side will be pretty cautious against us.

"I am not saying they will sit back as such, but the onus will be on to try to break them down a little more than we have against teams here in the past.

"I have already given a fair bit of thought about what I want to do and will continue to do so in the hours ahead of the game.

"We won't be doing anything too drastic and could even give the same players already in the team more scope to play further forward without dropping folk.

"But without naming names, some players are better at doing that than others, who are perhaps better at dropping short and taking the ball or playing deeper."

Dennis Wyness is available for Caley Thistle again after he recovered from the dislocated shoulder he suffered against Hearts five weeks ago.

That means Christie has a full squad to choose from for Dunfermline's trip north.

  2. Fair enough aye, but he's not been found guilty of anything yet. So by banning him from away grounds then they're handing out punishments for cases that haven't even been proven yet.

Many people are given conditions to follow before they go to trial - not to approach any witnesses or go to certain places, for example.

  3. No.

Our home form is poor, but as noted by several on here, this is not something that has been restricted to Charlie's reign.  The way we use our limited resources dictates that we are more effective away from home.  We are four points clear of relegation and have had a relatively difficult start to the season - we have played last season's champions, last season's runners up and two other top six sides from last year so far.  Losing to St Mirren was a disappointing result but they have shown that they are a capable SPL side since then.

If we are going to look to judge Charlie it should be at a much later stage.

  4. I'm not arsed that Charlie doesn't pat the players on the back - the players are grown men, not bairns.  Roy Keane wrote in his autobiography that when he played for Nottingham Forest he made a mistake and at half time Brian Clough punched him in the face in the dressing room, it hardly did him or NFFC any harm.

Regarding Charlie, I think that BridgeEnder makes a good point (as usual).  Charlie is unproven but has had a decent time since taking over.  We do have a problem getting results at home, this pre-dates Charlie.  I think that we need, as has been said, to utilise wide areas better at home, although my opinion is based on second hand evidence as I can't make many home games anymore.

  5. I don't know about whether he is the second best keeper but surely he is entitled to a shot at the squad, for a friendly at the very least!  David Marshall and Graeme Smith are both ***** yet are consistently included.  Craig Gordon is obviously better than Brown and I haven't seen Alexander play for years so can't comment on him.

  6. Tokely in the centre?!!  :017:

I remember that experiment from a few years ago, disaster! Ross is an effective but limited player, a one trick pony if you like. He's been pretty stretched so far this season, don't think a change of position would help anyone.

Argh, I had erased all memories of Rosscoe playing anywhere but right back from my memory.

Remember when Robbo played him in centre-midfield against Ayr United in his (Robbo's) first home league game?  Hooked after twenty minutes!

  7. Inverness Caley Thistle v Nairn County

Holders Nairn County booked their place in the UMAX North of Scotland Cup final once again with an impressive 1-0 win over Inverness Caley Thistle at the Tullochs Stadium in Inverness.

Nairn County started the game on the front foot and went close to opening the score in the first five minutes of the game. Firstly Duncan Jones fired a shot in from 20 yards that was held by Johnathan Smith within 60 seconds then Jones saw a shot deflected over soon after.

In the 20th minute Richie Hart raced through the centre of the Nairn defence and fired in a low shot which was deflected away by John Campbell for a fruitless corner. There was little between the two teams but that changed in the 29th minute when Nairn took the lead.

Willie Barron raced down the right wing before picking out Duncan Jones. The midfielder played the perfect ball over to the back post where Darren SHALLICKER was on hand to ram it home.

Despite the introduction of Ian Black at half time Inverness Caley Thistle failed to take a grip of the match and in the 53rd minute David Macrae picked out Mike Sanderson who tested Jonahton Smith with a low 20 yarder which the goalie dealt with.

Minutes later that man Ian Black picked out Zander Sutherland who drove in towards goal only for his low shot form the right edge of the box to be blocked by the legs of John Campbell.

Zander Sutherland then swung in a cross from the right that was looped back across goal by Richie Hart however his header hit the inside of the far post and came out to a Nairn defender who duly booted it clear.

There was to be one last chance for the home team to force extra time when a high ball into the area evaded Steven Edwards. It was chested down by Richie Hart who fired in a 10 yard effort which was well held by John Campbell.

    Well done Nairn

  8. CC obviously thought we had a good oppertunity of signing Stewart and when he decided to go off to Falkirk we were left in the lurch so CC decided instead of having no one we would take an experienced SPL player that has played at international level, and played at the highest Scottish club level... and you lot are now saying he is not fit for the job :015: :015: :006:

Another way to put that would be, we have signed a player who has scored one goal in fifty odd games in the last two seasons at a lower level than the one we are playing at.  Perfectly legitimate to question his signing, although there are positives that can be looked at, as I posted elsewhere.

Not to mention we still have 2 players on trial

    Right lets go over this...

5 wins out of 5 games going into the end of last season and not to mention the 4-2 win over United after Brewster (traitor) fecked off.

    Rankin.... good signing!

Managed to keep a hold of our 2 most influential players after Brewster did everything in his powers to convince them to move away

We were caught off guard against St Mirren but if we had one that game you would all be singing CC's praises.

You all need to take a good look at yourselves because as soon as we start doing well I guarentee you will be the first kissing his ***

I am honestly sick and tired of coming on this forum due to the constant slagging being aimed at our manager... I get enough of it at work & I don't expect to have to argue with people onthis site due to their lck of support.  Only one word can be used to describe you lot ...... fickle!!  :008:

I think Charlie has done a good job but why shouldn't people say what they think about the manager and what happens at the club?  Do you honestly think that Charlie has come in for "constant slagging" on this forum?  I remember Brewster and Robertson being criticised more than Charlie has been.

  9. You and Livi deserve each other, because your club's mean nothing.

We mean a lot to you though  :015:  What would you do with your time if you weren't hating us?

Oh and I couldn't care less where we sell the top, they get sold in the town centre.  RiG needs to stop moaning about everything just because he is stuck out amongst the Dorics  :004:

  10. I am an optimist, this transfer can be looked upon positively in some ways.  We have signed a player as cover for a problem position, he is not being brought in to start games.  In this sense he is an experienced Premierleague player, which has to be better than bringing in a wet behind the ears youngster.  We haven't paid a fee and I doubt we are spluring wages on him.  Also, perhaps McSwegan will be motivated by his failure to achieve what was expected of him at County?  Jim Hamilton was rotten for County when he was there but has been excellent in the SPL the last couple of seasons.  There are also quite a few cases of players whohaven't shone in the lower leagues making an unexpected impact in the SPL - James Grady scored more goals in one SPL season with Partick than in several First Division seasons with Ayr Utd for example.

  11. Have we signed McSwegan or not?  Why hasn't the official website been updated with this stuff?  It's very laudable that we are encouraging kids to eat healthily but surely more fans are interested in who we have signed than what types of bagel you can get in the IRA canteen.

If we have signed McSwegan then surely it's only for cover, i.e. bench.  He was a good player ten years ago but now is very much on the slide - he has scored one goal in the last two seasons for County, in the First Division!

    Any info on these trialists?

  12. I am slightly worried about our squad.  We have sold Tom Parratt and David Proctor, leaving us with only one 'proper' right-back in Rosscoe, who has just recovered from a serious injury and seems to have lost a bit of form.  Up front we have four strikers, of whom two are injured and one is a seriously raw kid.  We have options in the middle but it's no use having plenty of midfielders if you can't defend or score gaols.  It's heartening to see us pull out the stops of keep Dodsy for this season but he isn't showing the form he did last time out.

On the plus side, Rankin looked good on Saturday I thought and Blackie did well in the middle.  Bayne had a good game and is hopefully getting back to some of the form he showed in our first SPL season, after last terms injury interrupted frustration.

  13. I am sure that the police will use these orders sensibly.  It would take far too much time and money to prosecute everyone who gives an opposition player the bird at games.

Hopefully the nutsacks who arrange violence at games and hurl sectarian abuse will be banned.  So bye bye Boab Malcolm.
