Inverness CT 6-0 Strathspey Thistle - NoS Cup - Rnd2 - Report

North of Scotland
Sole Destroyer

Having beaten Lossiemouth 6-0 in the first round, the Caley Jags were drawn at home in Rnd2 against Strathspey Thistle who were given a bye into this round. The Highland League outfit had made their best ever start to a season winning four of their opening six games. Inverness lost their first League1 fixture on Saturday going down to Stenhousemuir which sets this game up nicely on a fine Summer evening. No Alfie Bavidge or Chanka Zimba tonight, but Adam MacKinnon, Liam Sole, Jordan Alonge and Robbie Thompson all started.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The stage was set on a fine night in the Highland capital as the game got underway. On paper, strong attacking options for the hosts with the visitors in good form and Shaun Morrison not shy in front of goal with six strikes to his name so far.
Here's 𝕏 to tell us what happened as it happened
06’ | 0-0 First chance falls to Strathspey as Shaun Morrison’s cross finds Calum Brown in the box but his shot is saved by Logan Ross.
10’ | 1-0 GOALLL! We take the lead through Robbie Thompson!
15’ | 2-0 GOALLL! We double our lead through Jordan Alonge’s header after he met Liam Sole’s cross into the box.
19’| 3-0 GOALLL! Liam Sole makes it 3-0 with a great finish inside the box.
25’ | 4-0 GOALLL! Liam Sole has his second after a good finish as Ben Gardiner found him down the left side.
31’ | 4-0 Aaron Doran sees his effort go wide after good hold up play from Shaun Morrison. Still got it, legend!
33’ | 4-0 Strathspey Thistle Sub: Dylan Lawrence on, Aaron Doran off. (We must have tired him out)
34’ | 4-0 Great save from Danny Gillan to keep out Liam Sole for his hat-trick.
40’ | 5-0 GOAL! Mitchell Robertson makes it 5-0 with a deflected effort in the box.
43’ | 6-0 GOAL! Robbie Thompson has his second with a good finish to make it 6-0!
HALF TIME 6-0 Robert on CTO at the interval: Enjoyable 45 from a young team. Robbie Thompson pulling the strings but every player has played their part. Logan Ross has had two good saves, the first at 0-0. I hope the goals have been caught on camera for those not here as there’s been some good stuff.
The second half would be about game and player management with the tie secured. This led to many substitutions as we saw out the game with the foot off the throttle.
64’ | 6-0 Double ICTFC Sub: Archie Kerr and Kenzie Harkness on, Adam Mackinnon and Liam Sole off.
70’ | 6-0 ICTFC Subs: Sam Reid and Jake Rodgers on, Ben Gardiner and Sam Thompson off.
79’ | 6-0 ICTFC Sub: Gavin Thomson on, James Clark off.
FULL TIME: ICTFC 6-0 Strathspey Thistle We advance to the next round of the North of Scotland Cup thanks to goals Robbie Thompson (2), Liam Sole (2), Jordan Alonge and Mitchell Robertson Robert summed up: Not much to say about that second half. Useful game time for the five young subs, more good saves by Logan Ross and nearly a last minute hat trick for Robbie Thompson, and that was about that.
We will face Forres Mechanics away in the Semi-Final with Ross County hosting Clachnacuddin. 3rd September is the date for your diary.
Forres 3-0 Rothes
Brora 0-0 Clach (7-8 penalties)
Wick 0-3 Ross County
Inverness CT 1-2 Stenhousemuir - League 1
Sucker Punched
Fifth versus seventh at the start of play today on Matchday 3 with the Warriors above unbeaten Inverness. Both sides had won last weekend and in the KDM Evolution Cup in midweek which hopefully tees this up to be an entertaining game in the Highlands on a warm Saturday afternoon. Liam Sole came off injured last weekend and was on the bench today with Bavidge, Zimba and Robbie Thompson. In a first half dominated by the hosts our profligacy kept the visitors in the game. All we had to show for it was a Paul Allan penalty. In stepped Gavin Duncan, allegedly a referee, to then award a penalty to Muir in their only attack of the first half for Matty Aitken to net from the spot. We could have been four up before this setback. We were pretty ineffective for most of the second half with the visitors playing more of the same rubbish. However, with ten minutes left Ross Taylor knocked in the winner after a break forward to ruin our afternoon in the Sun.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
By the time kick-off approached, it was a roasty-toasty afternoon with ample singing juice lubrication applied in Bar94 ahead of the game during the Meet & Greet with Allan Savage and 10CC. Inverness got the game underway shooting towards the South Stand and an early opportunity presented itself to Billy Mckay in the first minute, but his shot as he entered the box on the inside left position was weak and easily gathered by the keeper. Oscar McIntyre was prominent in most of the early moves but nobody in the box was able to turn his inviting crosses into the net. Longstaff might have done better twisting and turning his way into the box but was eventually blocked. McIntyre drove one from outside the box as the one way traffic continued and Alfie Stewart was denied by the feet of Darren Jamieson before he spilled an effort from Joe Chalmers, grabbing the ball quickly as it spun behind him. The pressure eventually paid off when Jamieson unceremoniously upended Mckay as he raced round the keeper. Paul Allan made no mistake from the spot, lashing the ball high into the net. Another low ball into the box caused havoc before being eventually cleared. Mckay then shot wide...Here we go we all thought. One up going on four. However, Gavin Duncan offered Stenny a lifeline with a soft free kick in midfield and compounded our frustration by eventually booking McIntyre. When the ball was launched forward, he then gave a foul for Devine's hands on attempt to get above the attacker. That foul was adjudged to be inside the box and despite protestations from the defence, a penalty was given which Matty Aitken dispatched easily. That seemed to take the wind out of our sails as half time approached.
HALF TIME 1-1
We were a bit flat at the start of the second half before Paul Allan went off after a knock to be replaced by Alfie Bavidge who got his first shot away soon after with Jamieson saving at his near post. Something odd then happened. Something that I never expected. Ross Munro had to block a breakaway as Olly Whyte burst into the box. I never knew they were allowed to cross the half way line? Substitute Jordan Alonge was inches too high as he headed goalwards off a corner a minute after entering the field of play. Alas our early slackness in front of goal came back to haunt us as Ross Taylor beat Munro at his near post with ten minutes left after wandering into the box from the right and catching the keeper out by shooting early. Liam Sole and Alfie Bavidge were both denied by the keeper as we peppered their goal but it just never happened. Lordy Lordy that was as frustrating as it gets with Stenhousemuir sticking to their game plan and Inverness wasteful. 19 shots to 4, but it's goals that count. With seven saves, Darren Jamieson was the Warriors hero. We also had 9 corners which we wasted. That's a disturbing statistic that we need to address.
FULL TIME: 1-2
Huge disappointment for the home fans who to a man/woman/person or anything that identifies as anything would have backed the hosts to take all three points. However, maybe a timely reminder that no League has ever been won after just three games.
Despite the Caley Jags bombarding the Warriors all afternoon, it was the men from the Ochils that went home with the points as they refused to wilt in the Highland heat.
Robert on CTO: That should have been a comfortable win but we paid the penalty for not being out of site in the first half. Some of our play and movement was top drawer in the first half but we are still too reluctant to shoot and chances go a begging as a result. The free kick in the lead up to the penalty was a shocking decision as MacIntyre won the ball cleanly (but he deserved his booking for walking away with the ball) and I thought the penalty was debatable: one I need to see again. We didn’t play nearly as well after the break but were well on top and should have been able to put the game to bed. Instead we got caught on the counter attack.
A bad day at the office but we knew there would be bad days. The key thing is to learn from it and regroup for the Montrose game.

Inverness CT -V- Stenhousemuir - League1

Matchday 3

The Warriors are the visitors this weekend for Matchday 3 at the Caledonian SarensPSG Stadium with kick-off scheduled for 3:00pm. The Caley Jags have won their opening two League1 fixtures netting five without reply against Kelty Hearts and Peterhead. Stenhousemuir went down 1-2 to Alloa Athletic on day one but bounced back last week to beat Cove Rangers 1-0. Both teams featured in the Challenge Cup in midweek. Inverness beating Elgin 1-4 and Stenhousemuir beating Rangers 'B' 2-1. Shaping up to be an open encounter in the Highlands.
This comment on Stenhousemuir's own preview should be all the incentive needed to dish out a good spanking.
"Manager Duncan Ferguson’s side have been clinical in front of goal and solid at the back"

Good start to the season for the Caley Jags beating Kelty Hearts away 3-0 then winning 2-0 over Peterhead at home. Billy McKay scored the first goal of the season at Kelty with Luis Longstaff adding a second before the interval. Wotherspoon with a clever finish on the hour completed the scoring in the opening game. Wotherspoon and Sole were the scorers against Peterhead either side of the interval. We fielded a fairly strong XI in midweek against Elgin City in the Challenge cup, despite making ten changes from the starting XI against Peterhead with only Remi Savage starting, and captaining the side to a 4-1 victory at Borough Briggs. Good workout for those not regularly starting and it was great to see Adam MacKinnon getting some game time. Alfie Bavidge is getting up to speed with a couple of goals and another great strike from Robbie Thompson who will be knocking on the door for a start. Paul Allan banged in a penalty as well with Mark Gallagher thrashing in a tremendous strike for Elgin from over 25yards high past Logan Ross in goal. Chanka Zimba also started. I doubt we have ever had a stronger bench with most of the regular starters sitting on it. Hopefully Liam Sole will be fit enough to play a part this weekend. He is an entertainer and will excite fans with his slaloming runs at defenders. Fingers crossed.
Scott Kellacher: Is well aware of the threat provided by Dale Carrick. Mathew Aitken is also a threat and he played over an hour in midweek as he comes back to full fitness.

This was the Warriors squad that beat Cove Rangers last weekend with Dale Carrick scoring again. Not much in it according to the match stats, but when you have a player with the quality of Carrick, then sometimes that's all you need. He also scored an early goal (15m) in their opening game in a 1-2 defeat to Alloa Athletic. Carrick joined the Warriors from Stirling Albion having scored 44 goals for the Binos. I'm sure he has scored a couple of these against us in recent years. (Scottish Cup 2022 3 - 2). Notice that Nat Wedderburn has gone to Cowdenbeath.
In: Oliver Simpson, defender (Dundee United); Archie Graham, defender (Queen's Park); Dale Carrick, forward (Stirling Albion); Finlay Gray, midfielder (Dumbarton); Finn Robson, midfielder (Forfar Athletic); Yan Gromov, goalkeeper (Cumbernauld Colts); Peter Mendy, forward (Albion Rovers). Loan in: Olly Whyte, midfielder (Motherwell).
Out: Corey O'Donnell; Josh Walker; Kyle Banner; Nat Wedderburn; Kyle Jacobs,(retired); Blair Alston; Matty Yates; Joe Ellison; Cameron Rowley; Ryan Duncan; Max Guthrie. Loan ended: Bobby McLuckie; Joe Morrison; Sam Fisher; Scott Tomlinson; Ben Black.

From the ICT Supporters Trust
Dylan Williams continues his brave cancer battle. His latest round of treatment has been tough. We’d like all supporters to show their support for Dylan and join in with an applause in the 14th minute and let him know that the whole ICT family wish him well with his ongoing treatment. ❤️

Elgin City 1-4 Inverness CT - Challenge Cup

Evolution Revolution

The clubs had already met this season in a League Cup encounter at Inverness with the Caley Jags edging that one 2-0 as we made hard work of seeing off a stuffy City. Elgin had lost all four games in the League Cup group F, scoring 2 but losing 19. We won two and lost two but like Elgin, we never got into the knockout stages. Tonight's game was the first one in the Group Stages of the Challenge Cup this year known as the KDM Evolution Trophy. To be honest, it's a bit of a white elephant this one with six group stage games before the knockout from 32 teams begins with the introduction of all the Championship teams. Expect many teams to be resting players with the more lucrative prize of promotion up for grabs.
There was no score after an even first half but second half goals from Alfie Bavidge (47, 90+5 pen), Robbie Thompson (50), Paul Allan (62 pen ) were enough to see off Elgin for whom Mark Gallagher scored a screamer. Good start to the group stages for Inverness.

Elgin City -V- Inverness CT - Challenge Cup

The Evolution of football

No rest for the wicked this midweek as Elgin City host Inverness in the KDM Evolution Trophy. That's the Challenge Cup to you and me. This one kicks-off at 19:45 on Tuesday evening at Borough Briggs, the first game in a mini series of six games to establish who progresses to the next stages of this elongated competition. The clubs have already met this season in a League Cup encounter at Inverness with the Caley Jags edging that one 2-0 as we made hard work of seeing off a stuffy City. Elgin lost all four games in the League Cup group F, scoring 2 but losing 19. We won two and lost two but like Elgin, we never got into the knockout stages.

Some may see this as a Mickey Mouse competition. I don't know where they get their ideas from to be honest.
1. League Phase:
Participants: 30 teams, including those from Scottish League One, League Two, and Premiership B teams (reserve teams).
Organization: Teams are divided into three pots based on division and regionalized into North and South sections.
Matches: Each team plays six league phase matches against opponents from their region (three from each of the other two pots).
Scoring: Points from these matches are compiled into a single league table.
Progression: The top 22 teams from the league phase advance to the knockout stage.
2. Knockout Phase:
Participants: The 22 qualifiers from the league phase join the 10 Championship teams.
Format: The competition progresses through traditional knockout rounds (Round of 32, Round of 16, etc.).
Seeding: Teams finishing in the top six of the league phase are seeded in the Round of 32, along with the Championship teams.
Final: The competition culminates in a final next spring. Century...
If you are still following this and haven't used your pass, well done you; you can join the 1% Club. Meanwhile, undercover images of the new Trophy were leaked to the press at the weekend revealing a specially designed piece of silverware the likes of which has never been seen before (disnae look right to me). Unbelievable Jeff! That's evolution for you...

Kells is no a happy chappy regarding the format. Resting some and getting fringe players more game time, but we have to remain competitive whilst doing this. A great start to the League1 campaign for the Caley Jags who have won their opening two fixtures without conceding. A 3-0 win at Kelty (Mckay, Longstaff & Wotherspoon) was followed by a 2-0 home win over Peterhead.
We have been without Adam MacKinnon (a couple of weeks away), Ross Millen (a week or two away) and Jake Davidson (longer term) with Paul Allan recovering to get on the bench at the weekend. Liam Sole took a knock and was replaced before the hour just after scoring his first goal for the club and will be a doubt. David Wotherspoon scored the opener against Peterhead. Surely more game time for the likes of Alfie Bavidge, Chanka Zimba, Mitchell Robertson, Mathew Strachan, Jordan Alonge and Robbie Thompson with a swap of keepers on the cards to give Logan Ross a go between the sticks. Also an opportunity to rest the older legs to keep them fresh for the bigger challenge of League points.

Elgin went down 1-0 at home to East Kilbride at the weekend as the new League2 team got their first points in the Leagues. That was on the back of the opening fixture where Elgin lost out in a dramatic late late ending at Annan as the borders club scored in the 89th & 93rd minutes to pip Elgin who had levelled at 2-2 in the 92nd minute. Dramatic stuff and a 3-2 win for Annan on the opening day. This was Elgin's team against East Kilbride where Ross Draper was their MotM. Lewis Hyde and Brian Cameron did not feature at Annan through injury although Cameron was named on the bench along with Kane Hester who played the final sixteen minutes. Elgin picked up seven bookings at the weekend. Can we expect a bit of rough and tumble on Tuesday night. Allan Hale has a few still on the broken list at the moment Hyde, Dingwall, Girvan and Cairns.
Elgin players can be seen going through the traditional warm up routines used for centuries down at Borough Briggs as they try to manoeuvre their way round the Elgin Marbles. The placing of a trophy near the field of play is supposed to spur on the players and motivate them in their quest to win something. It's not worked since last century, but God loves a trier.

Inverness CT 2-0 Peterhead - League 1

Into the Black

The two teams that got off to the best start last weekend met at the newly Christened SarensPSG Stadium but they start the day at opposite ends of the table due to our five point deduction in the aftermath of administration. Scott Kellacher had the pleasant dilemma of choosing his squad on merit rather than who is fit although Ross Millen, Adam MacKinnon and Jake Davidson require more time with Doc Proc before getting back on the pitch. Paul Allan made the bench. Peterhead have put together a decent squad full of Eastern promise with a few ex-Dons in their squad and plenty of experience in there as well. Peter Pawlett was injured last week and missed out, but Jack Newman, Cammy Smith, Jason Brown all started.
The Caley Jags took a deserved lead as half time approached, the tenacity and quality of Wotherspoon on the end of a superb move. Liam Sole added a second ten minutes into the second period and that ended the scoring. Alas he went off injured soon after and with that the game went into a bit of a lull as the hosts recorded their second win to climb into positive points with Peterhead rarely troubling the home goal.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A blustery afternoon that had already seen off the Moy Game Fair greeted the sides as the game got underway, the Caley Jags shooting towards the North Stand. A bright opening for the hosts put Peterhead on the back foot from the off. Although we dominated possession, Jack Newman was underworked in the visitors goal. Alfie Stewart brought out a great save from him after half an hour with a ferocious twenty-five yarder, the keeper flying high across goal to deny the wee man. The opening goal came five minutes before the break and it was a well worked move finished of by Wotherspoon. The set up was superb from Billy Mckay chesting an Alfie Stewart through ball down before laying it out wide for Oscar McIntyre to drill a low ball into the six yard box where Spoony did brilliantly to turn the ball into the net at the front post. We almost added a second but Newman saved brilliantly to deny Spoony with an acrobatic save.
HALF TIME: 1-0
Liam Sole knocked in a second in the fifty-fifth minute after a Longstaff shot had been blocked by the keeper or the post but unfortunately Sole limped off injured minutes later. Enter Alfie Bavidge and it wasn't long before he was in action dragging a shot wide after a good run to the box, cutting in from the left. He then combined with Billy Mckay but the veteran striker saw Newman tip his shot over. The final twenty was a bit of a lull with Inverness in total control. A late cross from the left saw the ball strike a defender and bounced close to the base of the post and out for a corner and with the home feet off the throttle another snippet for a consolation was drilled wide when Carnwath really should have made the keeper work.
FULL TIME: 2-0
Good result for the Caley Jags who dominated proceedings against a Peterhead side who came to park the bus.  The referee was over officious and pedantic and constantly stopped play for the slightest of things making the second half duller than it should have been. Newman kept it close with two or three excellent saves whilst Ross Munro could have sat in the stand or gone for a coffee. Bottom line is that we are into positive figures so it's onwards and upwards from here. Accies and Alloa are the front runners on six points.
On CTO: Bookings were ridiculous apart from Longstaff's. Poor poor referee who virtually decided every tackle was a foul especially when the Peterhead players shouted in agony. Easily one of the worst referees that has been here and that's saying something.
Sterner tests to come surely but can only beat what’s in front of us and we have done so impressively thus far. Not often pre-season optimism stretches to three matches…and the aforementioned players still to come back…not felt this good about football for a long time…thank you Alan Savage, management & players for getting everything so sorted from the mess we were in
I see Peter Reid got his Volvo sold!
Inverness CT -V- Peterhead - League1 - Preview
Peter Reid Fae Peterheid
Volvo for sale! It's the Blue Toon Team who visit the Highlands on Saturday as newly promoted and League2 Champions Peterhead come to the Caledonian Stadium SarensPSG Stadium after both sides got off to a flyer last Saturday. Peterhead top the table after beating fellow promoted side East Fife 4-1 whilst we sit bottom of the table thanks to a five point deduction after beating Kelty Hearts 0-3. We have not met since a 2-0 League Cup win at the Caledonian Stadium in July 2021 with second half goals from Manny Duku and Aaron Doran. This was Billy Dodds' first competitive game in charge. Duku broke the deadlock with a drilled effort from just inside the box and Aaron Doran doubled the advantage with a stunning twenty-five yard shot into the top corner four minutes later. The hosts saw out the remainder of the game well in control with Peterhead rarely threatening.
You can find out more about the three year deal for the Stadium Naming Rights with SarensPSG in the link below. Club Chairman Alan Savage said: “This is a fantastic and welcome piece of financial support for the Club from a company that recognises the benefit of ICTFC to all members of the Inverness community. “I cannot thank them enough. Let’s hope other businesses small and big follow their lead to put Inverness Caley Thistle on a solid financial foundation, so it can invest in a team that can climb up the leagues.”
Inverness got off to the perfect start with a clean sheet at Kelty and three goals. Billy Mckay got League1 off and running with the first goal of the season in the 4th minute. Luis Longstaff added a second before the break and Spoony the ball conjurer straight from the Edinburgh fringe festival juggled the ball into the net to complete the scoring on the hour. New signing Alfie Bavidge got the last twenty minutes as we broke him in gently. McIntyre was one of the stars of the show with an impressive wing back display which got him into the SPFL team of the week. Ross Millen (calf), Adam MacKinnon and Paul Allan (groin) missed out, although Allan will be assessed before the game, and new striker Chanka Zimba was nowhere to be seen, presumable waiting for registration to be completed. He did play in the midweek NoS Cup game.
On Tuesday night, an Inverness CT XI beat Lossiemouth 6-0 in the 1st Round of the North of Scotland Cup. Billy & Spoony oversaw this one with Alfie Bavidge and Jordan Alonge netting twice and Robbie Thompson and Ben Gardiner getting the other two. Chanka Zimba also started and won the penalty that Alfie scored. The Caley Jags now face Strathspey Thistle in the next round, venue and time TBC but it should be on 20th August, probably in Grantown on Spey.
Scott Kellacher was delighted with the win last week but is not going overboard. We still have a few niggles but Paul Allan has a chance of recovering. Looks like Calum MacLeod will continue at RB. Jason Brown has been identified as a big player for the Heid who have brought in wisely in the close season. We might see Bavidge, Zimba, Robertson and Alonge challenge for a start after positive displays at Lossie. However, crowd pleaser Liam Sole could be the man to unlock the visitors defence along with inform Luis Longstaff and the experienced Billy Mckay and David Wotherspoon.
Here's Peterhead's team that started last week against East Fife. There were first half goals came from David Wilson, a Kieran Shanks penalty and Jason Brown after Lewis Latona had scored early for the Fifers. Peter Pawlett came off injured in the first half and Brown added his second to round off the scoring in the final minute of the ninety. Good win for a solid Peterhead side against the League2 runners-up. The stats will show it was a fairly even game but it was the Blue Tooners that got the shots on target with East Fife squandering more opportunities
Notice that Jack Newton is their keeper. They also have Niall McGinn. Some decent players brought in.
In: Niall McGinn, forward (Glentoran); Jack Newman, goalkeeper (Dundee United); Fraser Mackie, forward (Aberdeen); Adam Carnwath, midfielder (Dundee United, loan to permanent); Craig McGuffie, midfielder (Dumbarton).
Out: Rory McAllister, forward (Formartine); Ben Armour, forward (Brechin); Scott Ross, defender (Formartine); Robert Ward, forward (Inverurie); Jordan Armstrong, defender (Bo'ness); Jamie Walker, defender (Caledonian Braves); Conner Duthie, midfielder (Dunbar United); Kieran Gibbons, midfielder (retired).
Leaked footage of the last clash with the prisoners shows SarensPSG getting their gear in place and it was 'nae jobby too sma' and 'nae stand too high' as they ceremoniously lifted Peter Reid's olde Volvo over the Stadium roof and onto the pitch in a fitting tribute to him and all at low cost with the advert thrown in for free. Now that's VFM.
Volvo for sale!
