  1. I'd be happy with:

People who applied/expressed an interest in the job -

    • Kenny Shiels - Ex-Kilmarnock, Carrick Rangers, Larne, Coleraine, Northern Ireland U17s and others manager.
    • Chris Sutton - Ex-Lincoln City manager.  Failed to get ICT job when interviewed for it the last time round.
    • Billy Reid - Ex-Hamilton and Clyde managers.  Recently failed to get the Airdrie job.
    • Gus MacPherson - Ex-St.Mirren and Queen of the South manager.
    • Billy McKinlay - Fulham Coach (needs an experienced assistant)
    • Antonio Tapia - Ex-Malaga, Real Betis and Tenerife managers, along with others.  Sacked by most clubs it seems and failed to get the Hibs job.
    • John Robertson - Ex-ICT, Hearts, Derry City, Ross County, Livingston and East Fife managers.  Not much of note everywhere post-ICT. (think he'd be a great assistant or coach)
    • Barry Wilson - Wick Academy and Dingwall Spar manager.  Former Elgin City assistant and recently turned down the Queen of the South job. (as would Barry)
    • Paul Hartley - Alloa Athletic manager.  Two consecutive promotions.
    • Rainer Bonhof - Ex-Germany assistant, along with Germany U21, Borussia Monchengladbach, Al-Kuwait and Scotland U21 manager.  Won the World Cup as a player.
    • Csaba Laszlo - Ex-Hearts, Uganda, Chaleroi and Lithuania managers, along with some others.
    • George Burley - Ex-Scotland, Hearts, Southampton, Ipswich Town, Crystal Palace and Derby managers, along with a couple of others.  Recently sacked after two games by Apollon Limassol.
    • John Hughes - Ex-Falkirk, Hibs, Livingston and Hartlepool manager. (good eye for players but needs a more technical assistant)
    • Alex Miller - Ex-Aberdeen, Hibernian (ten years there), St Mirren and Morton manager, along with spells at JEF United in Japan, South China in Hong Kong, AIK in Sweden and Sibir Novosibirsk in Russia.
    • Unnamed Italian - ???
    • Unnamed South American - ???
    • Jimmy Calderwood - took Aberdeen into European group stages, took Dunfermline into Europe, turned down Killie job, did well (apparently) in Holland

Removed themselves from the running -

    • Craig Levein - Declined to be interviewed.
    • Richie Foran - Ruled himself out and has yet to do coaching badges.
    • Maurice Malpas - Turned the job down.

Now unless the unnamed South American and Italian are up to much, that's a rather uninspiring list.

Really?  I think there's a few good names in there. Calderwood, Laszlo and Burley have all shown quality at previous, bigger clubs (with Calderwood and Burley doing far better than should have at Dunfermline and Ipswich).

  2. I get the feeling Robbo would stay for life for either a manager or coaching position.  I don't think it's the same as before.  I'd love to see Robbo and Foran, plus Paterson as scout, develop an old Liverpool boot room over the next decade.  Real continuity in the coaching staff.

  3. wouldnt say either sutton or larsson have failed at management. given suttons only had 1 year in it, in charge of lincoln, he kept them up after they had a horrendous start to the season, and then left due to ''family reasons''.

Larsson had 1 good year just missing out on promotion and 1 indifferent year avoiding relegation in his experience managing. What we know is that both were very good players and have experience working at the highest level with some of very good managers over the years.

Sutton left Lincoln in 20th place.  Larsson had a team tipped for promotion fighting relegation.  There is nothing in their management careers that says they are ready for taking a successful team in the SPL to the next level.  Nothing whatsoever.

As I've previously pointed out, a successful playing career means nothing in management.  Truly awful players and even those who haven't played at all have also made fine managers.  Who would you rather, multiple-title winning McCoist or perennenial reserve Walter Smith as a player?  Now who as a manager?  No relation between the two positions.

  4. Still can't see why people are going for Henrik Larsson.  A good player does not equal a good manager necessarily.  He's basically a Swedish version of Chris Sutton when it comes to management.  Great for Celtic but failed at management.  What good is that?

  5.

The more I've thought about it (and after hearing him interviewed on Radio Scotland on Saturday), the job has to go to Paul Hartley.

Seems to becoming a popular choice. Aberdeen have McInnes, Dun Utd have McNamara, Killie have Johnston, all young managers with

ambition & potential to reach the top of the game,

no reason why we cant give the gig to Hartley?

Reminds me of Ian McCall, Billy Kirkwood and our very own Craig Brewster (amongst a whole host of others).  All sought-after young managers in their day.

  6. Mulgrew, Whittaker and Wallace are better left backs. Shinnie is still young though and if he continues in the way he is going I have no doubt he'll get his chance.

And Bardsley is better than them all.  But Shinnie does deserve a call up to be part of the wider squad IMO.

Anyone else think Mulgrew is absolutely exceptional in that defensive midfield role?  For years, he was a player in search of a position.  I can't remember a player in the last, ooh, 15 years or so, that's looked so comfortable in that role.  Looks even better than Paul Lambert and he won the European Cup (or whatever it's called next week).

    • Agree 1
  7. I don't have a problem with Rangers players being in the squad, even though they are in a lower division. SPL is worse than the EPL/ECL for instance but it shouldn't stop a good player getting in.  Likewise, no problem with Kenny Miller playing a Canadian club.  Diamonds in the rough and all that.

That said, Shinnie deserves a chance.

  8. Paul Hartley.  Most exciting manager in the lower divisions since...Danny Lennon? Ian McCall?

It is a risk.  Maybe worth taking but it could see us plummet too.

Calderwood was managing last season.  Not too long away at all.

Shiels oversaw Killie's worst home record in over 30 years.  Still think, long-term, he could do something.

Yogi built a great side at Hibs.  Just couldn't stop the slide, which makes me doubt him.  Needs a top assistant.

Sheerin's done well at Arbroath.  Couldn't expect much more.  That said, would we be considering him if he hadn't played for ICT?

  9. Robert Eagle had flashes of talent.  No engine though.  He wasn't far off Div. 1 standard - which is of course where we ended up. Stratford was worse, though tried hard, mind you.  Simon King would still be a first pick today had he avoided the injuries that ruined his career.  Unlucky rather than worst.

  10. We'll see if we're better off without him.  Remains to be proven.

Egomania is par for the course with winners and those that desire to be.  Couldn't care less if the new manager has an ego the size of Mourinhou or a nastiness that kicks di Canio into touch.  Whatever works.

  11. Burley wasn't suited for an international job.  His main string to his bow is finding good players in unfashionable clubs.  That couldn't really happen at Scotland.  Taking Ipswich into Europe and Hearts to the top of the league has to be in his favour.  Crystal Palace wasn't great but it's the only blip in his club career for me.

I'd be delighted.  Does he drink as much as reported.  I don't know but I doubt it. Never hear rumours when things are going well.  Plus, look at Brian Clough for a start...

  12. Laszlo wouldn't be my first choice but, remember, he played either Nade or defenders up front because he wasn't allowed to sign anyone.  In fact, he publicly came out and stated that Hearts needed to sign strikers:

"If you look at the table, we have played 18 games and scored 21 goals. That shows where we have problems."

In fact, he was sacked for demanding new strikers:

"The last meeting with the owner was positive and I told him that we need fresh blood up front"

    ...and then he was gone!

    Wouldn't be disappointed by Csaba.

  13. and the potential is there to take them from being a sleeping giant to somewhere far further than he could ever take ICT (due to lack of money/fans/infrastructure etc)

Given that we are currently second and in a good cup run, then further is first and winning either both cups or winning them regularly.

Yeah, I'm sure Terry and Mo really believe they will be above Celtic next year.  Money over ambition.
