ICT v Dundee Utd - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
The last time Inverness CT went into a game with no manager, they beat Livingston 3-0 in Inverness. Now they play Dundee Utd at home and a repeat of that scoreline would be great. With rumours that Brewster will take over on Monday, Donald Park will take the reins for this game. I don't know if Donald Park will experiment with team selection but if he does I wonder if Marius will keep his slot and will Dean McDonald finally start?? Whatever happens we need some points on the board and the sooner the better

A GAME TO REMEMBER
For this weeks game to remember we take you back to
Inverness CT’s first ever victory over Dundee Utd. In their previous 7 attempts Inverness had failed to beat the Terrors but the midweek CIS Cup match gave them another chance to break the duck. Only 2 minutes had gone when Liam Fox put Inverness CT into an early lead. And with 4 minutes left of the first half, Barry Wilson capitalised on a keeper error to slam the ball home making it 2-0 and very difficult for United to come back. If I remember correctly Barry Robson hit the woodwork 3 times during the match!! The 2nd half didn’t bring any goals giving Caley Thistle their first victory over Dundee United in history. Inverness CT eventually lost in the next round away to Livingston . The attendance was 1919.
The teams were as follows:

INVERNESS CT : Brown, Duncan, Dods, Munro, Morgan, Proctor, Hart, Fox, Wilson, Wyness, McAllister. Subs- Black (for McAllister), Fraser, Parratt, Finnigan, Brewster.
DUNDEE UTD: Stillie, McCracken, Ritchie, Archibald, Wilson , Canero, Brebner, Duff, Robson, Miller, Fernandez.
Subs- Samuel (for Duff), McIntyre (for Miller), McInnes (for Canero), Kenneth, McLean.

The referee was John Underhill and there was only 1 booking on the day: Miller of Dundee Utd. Seven of the Inverness players ho started the match still play for the club!

FACTS BETWEEN THE TEAMS
All League meetings between the teams have taken place in the SPL. Inverness CT have only lost one of the last 9 meetings in this fixture, however it took last this season in December when Dundee Utd won 3-1. Dundee Utd never lost any of the first 7 meetings between the teams. The biggest win was by 2 goals, both teams have won by this margin. Gary McSwegan, Craig Brewster, David Proctor and Barry Robson have all played for both clubs. The fixture produces an average of 2.2 goals per game.

TEAM NEWS

Inverness CT: The highlanders will go into this game without a manager. According to rumours, Craig Brewster will be appointed on Monday but time will tell. Donald Park is in charge for this weekend’s game. He could have to make at least 1 change to the team as Richard Hastings is struggling to be fit for the game. Alan Morgan is on stand by to replace him. It will be interesting to see if Marius Niculae starts for the third game in a row and who he would partner. Surely Dean McDonald is due a start? Time will tell.

Dundee Utd: Darren Dods will play against his old side for the first time since leaving in the summer. The team have only conceded 2 goals so far but have only managed to score 2 aswell. They have had a win, a draw and a lose. They are likely to keep the same side after a goal less draw against Hibernian last week.

Fans Want Warnock

Teaser Paragraph:
The resignation of Charlie Christie kicked the usual circus of hype and specualtion that surrounds every managerial vacancy into high gear and fans have been watching as the press churn out many of the same old potentials. As well as past managers Craig Brewster and John Robertson a couple of other interesting names have been thrust into the limelight but none is more surprising than sometimes controversial ex Sheffield Utd manager Neil Warnock.
Since the resignation news broke the press have been peddling the story that Craig Brewster was the fans favourite to replace him. Only one problem with that....it appears they forgot to ask the fans! We have been running a couple of unscientific site polls to try and guage the fans favoured choice and Warnock is well ahead in both.
Warnock 61.0 % Brewster 14.0 % Pressley 14.0 % Coyle 8.0 % Robertson 2.0 % Malpas 1.0 % When fans were asked who their most favoured choice out of the names mentioned so far in connection with the Caley Thistle post, it was perhaps surprising that Warnock, the least likely but most experienced name in the frame currently has over 60% of the vote. It would seem that fans are quite excited that such a well known and experienced manager has thrown his hat into the ring and are seeking an experienced hand to guide the ship rather than stepping back in time for a former manager or looking at another player looking to cut his teeth on the first rung of his managerial career.
In a second poll, the question was narrowed down to only the two front runners as voted for by the fans and Warnock’s lead was overwhelming with 84.5% voting for him and only 15.5% this time going for Brewster.
So why is Warnock so popular with the ICT fans? And is he even a possibility? {josquote}if Inverness or anybody else want to talk to me then I would be more than delighted to do so - Neil Warnock{/josquote}
Warnock's popularity with the ICT faithful seems to stem from the fact that he is a well known manager who is passionate about any club he has managed to the point of being controversial. He also has bags of experience and most importantly has actually expressed a desire to be considered although reports today indicate that he may now be distancing himself from the post.
In recent days he has made the following types of comments which make ICT fans believe that although it might be implausible, it may not be impossible. “I have often talked about managing in Scotland. We have family up there and my wife has already said she would like to live in Scotland at some point. "I'm dying to get back into the game and if Inverness or anybody else want to talk to me then I would be more than delighted to do so. I have not always been money-motivated. For me, it is more about the size of the challenge and working for people who have faith in me."
Warnock (58), was a midfielder in his playing days which were spent mainly at lower league clubs such as Chesterfield, Scunthorpe, and Crewe and is also a chiropodist and a qualified referee !!! He has an impressive pedigree with smaller clubs gaining promotions with Scarborough and Notts County and two consecutive play-off victories with Huddersfield. In 2003 he led Sheffield United to the semi-finals of the FA Cup and the League Cup as well as the first division play-offs. In 2006 he gained promotion to the English Premiership with Sheffield but resigned at the end of the season when the side were relegated. Whilst manager of Notts County he turned down lucrative offers to manage both Chelsea and Sunderland so perhaps managing ICT would not necessarily be the stop-gap for him until something bigger came along that some might believe. In fact, speaking to the BBC in June he challenged clubs to give him one last shot at management saying “I think there is another club, chairman and group of fans out there who would relish me taking over.” Well it appears that ICT fans seem to be relishing the idea that he could take over but it remains to be seen if that enthusiasm stretches to the Boardroom where it is rumoured that former manager Craig Brewster is the favoured candidate. Some have also questioned whether his recent comments about being delighted to discuss terms with Inverness are indeed genuine but if they are the omens may be good as the man himself (speaking in another BBC interview) said he had already turned down a couple of clubs because they didn’t feel right and has only given himself until Christmas to get fixed up with the right job.
So just how successful has Warnock been, and how do the stats shape up when compared to the other names that are being thrown around?
Neil Warnock Team P W L D Win % Scarborough 78 30 23 25 38.46 Notts County 209 90 70 49 43.06 Torquay Utd 15 5 5 5 33.33 Huddersfield Town 108 44 30 34 40.74 Plymouth Argyle 88 35 29 24 39.77

John Robertson would actually come closest to Warnock having managed nearly 200 games and winning 41% of them. His record at ICT was a phenomenal 53.66% wins but when the club were promoted to the SPL that dropped to only a 28% winning record for the 14 games he managed after promotion.
Craig Brewster did OK at Inverness first time around but many fans have expressed reservations about welcoming him back both because of the way he departed, comments he made about loyalty just weeks before leaving, and also his shocking record at Dundee Utd when "Brewster the Player" wasnt on the field to help "Brewster the Manager"
The other names mentioned were Owen Coyle and Maurice Malpas. Coyle has a pretty impressive record in his fledgling managerial career and could be a dark horse for the post although compensation to his current club could be a problem but fans are pretty well unanimous that Maurice Malpas is not the man they want to see in charge after watching the near demise of Motherwell last season.
We are sure that the managerial race for the ICT hotseat has many twists and turns to take before it is finished but hopefully all fans can and will get behind whichever candidate is chosen although in reality that would be harder to do for some of the candidates than others !!

Christie Resigns

Teaser Paragraph:
At a lunchtime press conference at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, Vice-Chairman and Director of Football Graeme Bennett confirmed that Caley Thistle Head Coach Charlie Christie has resigned with immediate effect.
Bennett commented at length that the decision was not one of mutual consent and that the club had hoped Charlie would have remained in the position for "years to come".
However, to his credit, Charlie has decided that the job is putting too much pressure on both him and his family and has decided to put them first and step down from his current role at the club.
[pictures supplied by Trevor Martin]
After 314 appearances as a player for Caley Thistle, Charlie Christie has decided to call time on his managerial career at the club after only 63 games in charge (+4 as interim manager when previous managers have left).
During the close season, there was a revealing interview in the media where Charlie admitted that the pressures of managing a Premier League club were far greater than he expected. In the article he made the point that he had been taking all comments, both positive and negative, to heart and had questioned his own suitability for the job.
He went on to say that he now felt more able to cope with them a little better, but it would seem that these pressures, along with the shaky start to this season have brought matters to a head and the ICT legend has made the brave decision to step aside.
There will likely be a wide range of comments both in support of Charlie and also from the "told you so" brigade but we here at CaleyThistleOnline are truly sorry to see a man with ICT in his heart have to make such a gut wrenching decision and walk away.
At a lunchtime press conference at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, Vice-Chairman and Director of Football Graeme Bennett commented as follows:
"I can officially confirm that Charlie Christie has asked to terminate his contract as First team Coach with immediate effect. This has come as a shock to myself and the rest of the board but Charlie has reached the view that the pressures of the job have affected his personal life and that his wife and family must come first. It has been a stressful time for Charlie who does not want to make any comment at this time and I would hope the media would respect that and not harass him. Charlie has been a great asset to ICT from day one, as a player who made over 300 appearances, running the Centenary Club, coaching and for the last 18 months as Manager. Our Chairman Alan Savage is on a business trip to Kazakhstan but has asked me to express his surprise and disappointment at Charlie's decision but his full acceptance of his reasons.
This is certainly not one of those "by mutual consent" resignations. The first I knew was when Charlie came to me on Sunday morning saying the stresses of management was proving greater than he had anticipated. He felt that in fairness to his wife and family he needed to step down. To be fair, there have been a couple of occasions in the past when Charlie felt the pressures had become too much. Being a local man, he is perhaps too accessible to media and public alike. His resignation has nothing to do with current results, as we're traditionally slow starters down the years, but has everything to do with his peace of mind and his not enjoying his job. We as a Board sympathise with Charlie. The success of ICT has led to raised expectations which have been rather unrealistic. That doesn't help. A genuinely nice and decent and honourable guy has felt pressures which he can no longer cope with and he is relieved at finally making the decision. He does not want to speak to the media at this stage but has asked me to pass on his best wishes to the team, coaching staff and the board and his gratitude for having the opportunity to manage this Club. Charlie was a success in this job, as anyone who saw our games with Rangers and Celtic last season will agree. We had hoped he would stay for years to come and had actually begun discussions with him on a new contract. The last thing the Directors wanted was to go looking for a new manager once again - we've been unlucky on this front in the past, only this time we have not had our manager lured away by another Club. The Chairman is back in Inverness late tomorrow and there will be a board meeting early this week to discuss the next steps relating to a successor to Charlie. In the meantime, Donald Park will take charge of the team in preparation for Saturday's home game with Dundee United. But I wish to publicly thank Charlie Christie for all he has done for this Club. He can hold his head high in that respect and I am sure the supporters will join the Board in sympathising with his decision and respecting it."

St Mirren 2-1 Inverness CT - SPL

John Rankin and Graham Bayne returned to the side to face St Mirren at Love Street but neither could ensure the three points came back up the A9 from Paisley as the Buddies won 2-1.
Franco Miranda and Mark Corcoran grabbed the goals for St Mirren with Don Cowie getting his first for ICT.
However, with Gretna gaining a point at Tynecastle, Caley Thistle slumped to the bottom of the table and are now the only team still to win any points.
18/08/07 Love Street, Paisley ST MIRREN 2 (Miranda 19, Corcoran 55) Team: Smith, Van Zanten, Potter, Haining, Miranda (Mehmet 63), McCay, Mason, Murray, Brittain (Reid 63), Corcoran, Kean
Subs: Burke, McGinn, Brady, Barron & Howard
INVERNESS CT 1 (Cowie 57) Team: Fraser, Tokely, McCaffrey, Munro, Hastings (Wilson 71), Duncan, Cowie, Black (Wyness 82), Rankin, Bayne, Niculae
Subs: D McDonald, McAllister, Sutherland, McBain & Ridgers
Referee William Collum Attendance 3309 John Rankin and Graham Bayne returned to the side to face St Mirren at Love Street today with Dennis Wyness and Roy McBain dropping to the subs bench.
There was no place in the squad for recent loan signing Steven Watt. In fact, Manager Charlie Christie named a set of subs without a single defender perhaps highlighting how desperate the need is for a permanent defensive signing.
FIRST HALF
The opening 18 minutes were all Caley Thistle. Graham Bayne attempted an overhead kick in the second minute that went over the bar, John Rankin had a shot from distance well saved by Smith in 7 minutes and Haining cleared another effort from him for a corner in 11 minutes. Ian Black also had an attempt a minute later that went wide.
Although it was against the run of play, St Mirren scored in the 18th minute and the pendulum swung quickly in the other direction. A cross from Van Zanten found Franco Miranda at the edge of the box and the young Argentinian, making his debut for St Mirren, struck it sweetly into the bottom left corner.
Niculae and Cowie both had chances to equalise soon after the opener but on both occasions keeper Chris Smith was up to the task of saving their long range efforts.
As the half wore on it was fairly evenly matched with both sides having chances. Graham Bayne put a header wide in 28 minutes and a minute later forced Chris Smith to concede a corner which came to nothing. At the other end, Richard Brittain hit wide from 25 yards out. Before the half came to an end, Black and Niculae both had chances but they came to nothing and the half ended with St Mirren leading 1-0.
Half Time: 1-0
St Mirren went two up in the 55th minute through Mark Corcoran. Corcoran, who was on the end of numerous offside decisions in the first half had an easy tap in after Stewart Kean had done all the hard work on the right flank.
Marius Niculae may not have scored in his first two matches but he had some good touches today and setup Don Cowie for his first Caley Thistle goal just three minutes later. A great cross from the Romanian gave Cowie the chance to slide in with his goal.
The team went looking for an equaliser and Charlie Christie went for some very attacking substitutions as time wore on. Barry Wilson came on for Richard Hastings and Dennis Wyness then came on for Ian Black.
With only three at the back, St Mirren had a few chances to put the game out of reach and it was Stewart Kean who made a mess of one of the best with just over 20 minutes to go. After being setup by Hugh Murray he headed high and wide from only six yards out. Kean would also have another chance in the 88th minute where he beat Mike Fraser and Stuart McCaffrey as they slid on the wet surface and only had to walk the ball into the net... he perhaps didn't realise how much time he had and put it wide.
Sandwiched in between these two Kean chances was Caley Thistle's best chance to draw level. A John Rankin shot went inches wide of the post with 10 minutes to go.
Full Time: 2-1
That's now three games played, three defeats only two goals scored, one by a midfielder, one by a defender and seven goals leaked. Its not quite a crisis yet but with Gretna getting a point at Tynecastle, and Caley Thistle being the only team in the SPL who are yet to register any points next week's game against Dundee United at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium is most definitely a must win match.

Hastings gets a call-up

Teaser Paragraph:
Whilst Marius Niculae hopes to win back his place in Romania's national squad over the next year or two by playing for Caley Thistle, lets not forget we also have a current International player called Richard Hastings who has 43 caps for Canada and was called up to new coach Dale Mitchell's first Canadian squad for a game against Iceland next week (22nd). Richard is the second most experienced player in the Canada squad after Spurs defender Paul Stalteri (59 caps) who is likely to captain the side and also to play alongside Richard in defence.
According to Canadian coach Dale Mitchell "You can see by looking at the squad that it is a European-based squad. It is a midweek game in Europe, so it is an ideal time to get the majority of our European-based players together. We’ll look to incorporate our North American-based players in our match against Costa Rica (at home in Toronto on 12 September)."
The 17 man squad does however contain 10 players who featured in Canadas impressive run to the semi finals of the Gold Cup - a tournament where Richard made it into the Gold Cup Best XI team - as well as two new caps who featured in the last two U20 World Cups.
According to the official ICT website, Richard had this to say about his call-up "It is just great to be back involved on the international scene and that's just down to doing my best for ICT."

A GAME TO REMEMBER
For this weeks game to remember we take you back to the first ever match between the teams. It took place on the 10th of August 1999 in the Scottish Challenge Cup.
Inverness CT won the match 1-0 thanks to an 88th minute Mike Teasdale goal. The attendance on the day was 1334.
The teams were as follows:

INVERNESS CT : Fridge, Mann, Tokely, Hastings, Golabek, Teasdale, Christie, McCulloch, Sheerin, Stewart, McLean. Subs- Robson, Shearer, Glancy. ST MIRREN: Roy, McLaughlin, Turner, Baltacha, Nicolson, Murray, Drew, Kerr, McGarry, Brown, Yardley. Subs- Mendes, Lavety, Ross.

FACTS BETWEEN THE TEAMS
All League meetings between the teams have taken place in the First Division so far apart from three. Inverness CT have won all cup meetings between the sides. Inverness CT ’s Paul Ritchie is the top scorer in the fixture with 8 goals. Next is Dennis Wyness with 7. St Mirren’s top scorer in the fixture is Yardley with 3. The biggest win in the fixture was when Inverness CT won 5-0 on 6/5/2000. McCulloch got 2, with Xausa, Wilson and Bavidge all getting one goal. Inverness CT are unbeaten in 9 games against St Mirren at Love Street. The last time St Mirren beat Inverness CT at home was on the 12th February 2000.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Marius Niculae (Inverness CT): The Romanian internationalist made his long awaited debut for the club last week down at Motherwell. Apart from looking a little tired at the end of the game due to a lack of match practice he looks like a good signing for the club. He is looking to get back into the Romanian squad and to do that, he will need to bang in the goals for the Highlanders first and there will be no better way to start than helping Caley Thistle get their first victory of the season this weekend.

Steven Watt (Inverness CT): Steven was signed on loan during the week from Swansea City for the season. He will add much needed experience to the defence and give good competition for Munro and McCaffrey. Whether he will start or not, only Charlie Christie knows!!

Craig Dargo (St Mirren): So far, the ex-Inverness and Kilmarnock striker is yet to make his debut for the Paisley Saints but it may come this weekend. At the time of writing this, we do not know if Craig will be fit enough but if he is, then I am sure Inverness will aim to prevent him scoring. I wonder what the reception will be from the Inverness CT fans when he touches the ball. He did wonders for us in his 2 years in the Highlands but he left us for a team that finished lower than us in the league last year. Should be interesting!!

Swans Defender on Loan at ICT

Teaser Paragraph:
ICTFC today announced that Steven Watt of Swansea City FC will join Caley Thistle on a season long loan deal. The 22 year old defender is already training with the team and they are hopeful that the paperwork will go through in time for him to make an appearance against Motherwell in tonight's reserve fixture. Originally hailing from Banff, Watt is a product of the Chelsea Youth System. He signed his first professional contract with the Stamford Bridge outfit in 2004 and made his first appearance for them in January 2005 in an FA Cup match against Scunthorpe. He made a further sub appearance against Newcastle and earned himself a call-up to the Scotland U21 squad before moving to Swansea City FC in January 2006.
His time at Liberty Stadium has been plagued by injury meaning the young defender has only made 7 appearances in 19 months. A dislocated shoulder led to the need for two operations but is now back to full fitness and eager for first team action. "Steve is young player with fantastic potential who has been unfortunate with injuries in his time at Swansea," said Roberto. "Waiting for an opportunity with us is no good for him right now. He needs to go and get games to progress and become the player we think he can be.
"We gave him another contract because we think he can be an asset to Swansea, and going on loan to a very good league like the SPL will help him achieve that."
Although the deal with Caley Thistle has been penned for 12 months, Swansea City do have the option to recall him in the New Year transfer window should the need arise.
Information on the player can be found at the Swansea City Website
