St Mirren 0-1 Inverness CT - SPL

Stuart McCaffrey started this game in place of the departing Darren Dods and it was his goal that proved to be the winner - his first of the season - in this low key affair. Club Historian Ian Broadfoot reports on the game from Love St
ST MIRREN 0-1 ICT
19th May 2007  Love Street, Paisley  ST MIRREN  0  Team: Smith, Van Zanten, Broadfoot, Millen (Burke 76), Reid, Maxwell, Malone (MacKay 46), Corcoran,
Murray, Mehmet, Sutton (Kean 80)
Subs: Lawson, Brady, Barron & Hinchcliffe
INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE FC  1 (McCaffrey 74) Team: Fraser, Tokely, McCaffrey, Munro, Hastings, Sutherland, Black, Duncan, Hart (Wilson 84), Dargo (Bayne 72), McAllister (Wyness 73)  Subs: Dods, Paatelainen, Rankin & Ridgers
Referee  Dougie McDonald  Attendance  4834   This match could have been vital to St Mirren’s SPL survival but that was guaranteed last week and so today was all about pride and league places.   Heavy rain and high winds spoiled the spectacle and it took a rare Stuart McCaffrey goal to separate the sides. McCaffrey came in for Darren Dods who made his final appearance for ICT on the bench. He was joined by Dennis Wyness on his return from long-term injury. Roy McBain dropped out through injury, Zander Sutherland made his first start of the season, Rory McAllister partnered Craig Dargo up front and Grant Munro was captain.   Richard Hastings made his 300th appearance, the day after he turned 30. It was an emotional day for St Mirren captain Kirk Broadfoot as he played his last match before joining Rangers in the summer.   The kick-off for all SPL matches was brought forward to 1230 to avoid a clash with the Chelsea v Manchester United FA Cup final at the revamped Wembley. Russell Duncan was first to try for goal in three minutes but Chris Smith saved easily. Saints then had some good possession which resulted in Hugh Murray and Billy Mehmet both heading wide. Smith saved from Sutherland in 13 minutes then McAllister struck wide. Dargo also hit wide either side of the half hour mark before John Sutton did the same at the other end after an excellent through ball from Andy Millen. In first half added time Dargo was through into the St Mirren box before Alan Reid stepped in with a timely sliding tackle.   Half Time: 0-0   Caley Thistle had by the better of the second half and Smith did well to save a Hastings free kick in 54 minutes and to tip over a deflected Ian Black long-range shot in 63 minutes. With 20 minutes left Grant Munro brought down Mark Corcoran as he headed for goal and the home crowd shouted for a red card – the referee did not deem it to be a ‘last man’ tackle and the card was yellow.   The goal that proved to be the winner came four minutes later from a Richie Hart lob into the St Mirren box. The normally reliable Chris Smith came out but failed to collect and McCaffrey sent a looping header into the net from six yards out for his first goal of the season. This spurred St Mirren on and they had a good spell of attacking football but could not make it count.   There was a real chance two minutes into added time when Broadfoot sent a ball into the box and Alex Burke bravely dived to head goalwards from 12 yards – Mike Fraser saved well and the whistle went to end the season.   Full Time: 0-1   Caley Thistle finished an excellent eighth in the SPL with Graham Bayne the only player to feature in every match and Craig Dargo top goalscorer with ten. With a job well done it was time for a rest then reassembly in late June for pre-season training and a return to the Italian sun.

St Mirren V ICT - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
The final game of the season sees Caley Thistle take on St Mirren. ICT did the Buddies a big favour last weekend by beating Dunfermline and confirming their relegation so this match is no longer the nailbiter it might have been. It took place on the 10th of August 1999 in the Scottish Challenge Cup. Inverness CT won the match 1-0 thanks to an 88th minute Mike Teasdale goal. The attendance on the day was 1334. The teams were as follows: INVERNESS CT: Fridge, Mann, Tokely, Hastings, Golabek, Teasdale, Christie, McCulloch, Sheerin, Stewart, McLean. Subs- Robson, Shearer, Glancy. ST MIRREN: Roy, McLaughlin, Turner, Baltacha, Nicolson, Murray, Drew, Kerr, McGarry, Brown, Yardley. Subs- Mendes, Lavety, Ross. The referee was Garry Mitchell and there were no bookings on the day. Three Inverness players still play for the club (inc Golabek) and there is one who is now the manager of the club. FACTS BETWEEN THE TEAMS • All League meetings between the teams have taken place in the First Division so far apart from three. • Inverness CT have won all cup meetings between the sides. • Inverness CT’s Paul Ritchie is the top scorer in the fixture with 8 goals. Next is Dennis Wyness with 7. • St Mirren’s top scorer in the fixture is Yardley with 3. • The biggest win in the fixture was when Inverness CT won 5-0 on 6/5/2000. McCulloch got 2, with Xausa, Wilson and Bavidge all getting one goal. Dennis Wyness, after being out since January, has recovered from his surgery and is likely to feature at some point in the match hopefully. It will be good to see him back in the squad and hopefully will be raring to go next season. Last game of the season, sorry the preview is short, I am in the middle of exams at the moment. Inverness CT 2-1 Dunfermline - SPL

With St Mirren winning at Motherwell, and Caley Thistle scoring a couple of late goals to win this game, Dunfermline are officially relegated from the Scottish Premier League. Club Historian Ian Broadfoot reports from the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium.
ICT 2-1 DUNFERMLINE
12th May 2007 Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, Inverness  INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE FC  2 (Hastings 76, McAllister 88) Team: Fraser, Tokely, Dods, Munro (McAllister 75), Hastings, Hart, Black, McBain (Sutherland 68), Paatelainen (Wilson 61), Dargo, Bayne Subs: McCaffrey, Duncan, Rankin & Ridgers
DUNFERMLINE  1 (McIntyre 37) Team: De Vries, Shields, Bamba, McGuire, Muirhead, Mason, Glass (Morrison 81), Hammill (McCunnie 66), O' Brien (Burchill, 81), McManus, McIntyre Subs: Hamilton, Young, Woods & McKenzie
Referee  Mike Ritchie  Attendance  6464  Man of the Match  Richard Hastings (ICT)
It was a day of high drama as Dunfermline came north hoping to keep their fine run going and at least take the relegation battle to the wire.
They brought a large vocal support and the team fought for every ball, but in the end it was not enough. At Fir Park the other possible candidates for the drop, Motherwell and St Mirren, were playing each other and there were many possible permutations after the final whistles.
In the event St Mirren fought back from 2-0 down to win 3-2, but the 2-1 win for Caley Thistle meant it did not matter. Dunfermline were relegated. Two months ago Caley Thistle were 1-0 up on Dunfermline at half time then surrendered the second half to lose 3-1. Today it was 1-0 to the Pars at half time and it was Caley Thistle who came back to win.
There were two milestones as Ross Tokely became the first player to reach the 400 appearance mark and Darren Dods played his 100th league match for ICT. The end of the season is often a time to give fringe players a run but, with relegation at stake, it would have been unfair to go down this route. Charlie Christie did shuffle his pack but with no loss of strength - John Rankin, Stuart McCaffrey and Russell Duncan dropped to the bench and Ross Tokely, Ian Black and Markus Paatelainen came back to start the match. The newly-blond Barry Wilson returned from suspension and injury to the bench.
It was frantic from the off and play surged from end to end. There was no danger however until the twelfth minute when Dunfermline ’s Jim McIntyre sent a low angled ball skidding past the post from the right. Five minutes later the first ICT effort came when Craig Dargo latched onto a long Grant Munro throw but his angled shot was held well by Dorus De Vries. Caley Thistle began to create openings but could not make them pay.
In 28 minutes a Richie Hart free kick from the right reached Graham Bayne but his header from the back of the box was held by De Vries. Three minutes later a clearance from the ‘keeper reached Hart 40 yards out with the goal vacated – Hart hesitated and was closed down before he could try for a spectacular goal. The opening came at the other end in 37 minutes when Tam McManus headed into the path of McIntyre and he volleyed home from just inside the home box.
Half Time: 0-1
With St Mirren trailing to Motherwell the Dunfermline fans began to sing ‘We’re staying up’ but their optimism was premature. The second half started bizarrely when a Dods attempted clearance was stabbed goalwards and Mike Fraser had to be alert to tip it over. Nothing came off at either end and Dunfermline began to slow things down to retain their lead. In 71 minutes a poor back pass towards De Vries allowed substitute Wilson to nip in and steal the ball but he was forced wide and could only chip it to the centre of the box with no one following up.
With fifteen minutes left Charlie Christie went for broke when he replaced defender Grant Munro with striker Rory McAllister. It was to prove decisive as within a minute McAllister was brought down by Sol Bamba 25 yards out on the right. Richard Hastings took the free kick and its power was too much for De Vries as he dropped it over the line – this was only the defender’s third goal for the club with the others coming in October and November 1995.
Zander Sutherland did well down the left in 84 minutes and found McAllister inside – he ran on and blasted just wide from 25 yards. With two minutes of regular time left Wilson beat Phil McGuire to the ball and passed to McAllister who once more struck for goal from 25 yards. This time it took a deflection to fool De Vries and give ICT a 2-1 lead.
The three added minutes stretched to four and Dunfermline pushed hard. De Vries joined the attack for the final few minutes to try to make amends for his error but it all came to nothing.
Full Time: 2-1
The whistle went and the Dunfermline players slumped to the ground despondent. It had been a brave fight but the Pars were down and out. For Caley Thistle there was a one spot climb to eighth and just one game left away to St Mirren.

Its Marching Time

Teaser Paragraph:
If you happen to be in the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium a little early for tomorrow's match, you might see something a little strange .... and although strange, it will also be vaguely familiar.
Yes, its marching season and although there was a lot said about one that took place a few weeks ago in Inverness, this one is likely to pass with a good deal less controversy as the Highland Marchers begin their yearly trek with a pre-match send-off at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium en-route to Paisley in time for next Saturday's game against St Mirren.
The Highland March is now a regular phenomenon and this is the fifth one.
For those that dont know, it involves a group of ICT supporters walking from the venue of the second last game of the season to the venue of the last game of the season in time to take the match in. Along the way they try to raise as much money as possible for charity
It was born from a lot of drunken talk in the Market Bar a few years ago when Steve Taylor (aka - Yompa) came up with the plan to do something for his 50th birthday and this seemed like a good idea.  The Gringos got on board and the rest as they say ... is history. Interestingly enough, Gringo Jnr (Robert Wilson) actually has the highest distance tallied as both he and Yompa have walked them all but Yompa had to take a slight shortcut last year.
This year, the Highland March has moved up a notch ... a bright shiny new website, sponsorship from some local (and not quite so local) companies, paypal donations and a charity auction shows that they mean business in raising money for their two designated charities ... Team ICT and the International Children's Trust (no coincidence that they are also ICT !!)
The route for the march is quite daunting as the Marchers will walk not only the Great Glen Way but also the West Highland Way on their 180 mile trek to Love Street. Thats more than a marathon a day !!!
Although the March starts tomorrow after the game, there is still time to get in on the act by donating money, taking part in the charity auction or offering money to 'humiliate a marcher'.
Donating Money: If you'd like to make a cash donation, they have set up a Highland March PayPal account to allow you to do just that.  If you have a PayPal account, you can simply log in and send a donation to [email protected].  Don't worry if you don't have a PayPal account, you can also use your debit or credit card to make a payment. More details at this page : http://www.highlandmarch.co.uk/fundraising.html
Charity Auction: During the week of the march itself, a number of items will be made available on Ebay for people to bid on. Some are very ICT oriented others are from companies who may have no connection to ICT but have donated to the cause. Full details will be available on the Highland March website shortly.
Humiliate A Marcher: One of the participants will be made to dress in drag for the final leg of the Highland March - possibly the most public leg of the March - from around Milngavie to Love Street for the final match of the season. Some of you may be willing to pay good money to see that, others may want to pay good money NOT to see it.  Either way you get a chance to put your hand in your pocket and Humiliate a Marcher in return.

Inverness CT: 6 wins (6 League, 0 Cup) Draws: 7 (5 League, 2 Cup) Dunfermline: 5 wins (4 League, 1 Cup) PREVIOUS MATCHES TO REMEMBER 07/08/1999 (1st Division) Dunfermline 4-0 INVERNESS CT: In the first meetings between these sides nothing went to plan for the Caley Jags. A 4-0 drubbing which Petrie scored a last minute goal for the Pars. 10/04/2004 (Scottish Cup Semi-Final) INVERNESS CT 1-1 Dunfermline: Inverness appeared in only their 2nd Scottish Cup Semi-Final in history although they were the only team to still be in at this stage last year as well as 2004. Paul Ritchie had put a glancing header in just before half time but Craig Brewster cancelled it out later. 20/04/2004 (Scottish Cup Semi-Final Replay) Dunfermline 3-2 INVERNESS CT (Pittodrie): Inverness left Pittodrie with a sense of what could have been. Paul Ritchie scored a spectacular goal of which the build up and the lovely floated pass by Bingham was unbelievable. Darren Young, Craig Brewster and Barry Nicholson all scored to make it 3-1 to the Pars but David Bingham got a goal of his own with a penalty late on. Inverness would be seeing a lot more of Pittodrie the next season. And little did Brewster know he just knocked out the team that he would be playing for and managing a year later!! 15/08/2004 (SPL) INVERNESS CT 2-0 Dunfermline (Pittodrie): A first SPL win for the Caley Jags on their first “home” game of the season. Stuart Golabek had scored Inverness CT’s first ever SPL goal in 12 minutes then Juanjo opened his account with his first for the club. It was a great day in a game dominated by the home side. FACTS BETWEEN THE TEAMS • Inverness CT had never lost a SPL game to Dunfermline, until the most recent game in Inverness when Dunfermline won 3-1. • Dunfermline have never lost a 1st division game to Inverness CT. • Craig Brewster has played for both teams all be it for two short spells. • The fixture averages around 2.2 goals a game. WHERE TEAMS CAN FINISH?? So with just 2 games to go, the relegation is still to be decided with Dunfermline fighting right till the end. However with an estimated £65,000 for every place, teams will aim to finish as high as possible. Here is a league table with a list of where the teams can finish. 1. Celtic 2. Rangers ---------------------- 3. Aberdeen or Hearts -------------------------- 4. Hearts or Aberdeen 5. Kilmarnock or Hibernian 6. Season Tickets 2007/08

Teaser Paragraph:
In what will no doubt be a very welcome move, Caley Thistle have announced that the cost of season tickets for the 2007/08 season will be exactly the same as they were for the 2006/07 season.
In a press release, Chairman Alan Savage announced:" We want to show the club's recognition of our fans' loyalty by making no increase in admission charges for 2007-08. That will, in real terms, be a reduction in prices and it represents an investment in our supporters which we hope will further strengthen our fan base for the future".
The information was sent out to the media in a press release earlier today (Thu 10th May) and also to newsletter subscribers on the official website. The full press release reads as follows :
Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC have, ahead of their final home game of this season, decided to freeze season ticket and match ticket prices for next season.
Chairman Alan Savage announced:" We want to show the club's recognition of our fans' loyalty by making no increase in admission charges for 2007-08. "That will, in real terms, be a reduction in prices and it represents an investment in our supporters which we hope will further strengthen our fan base for the future. "The price freeze will not prevent us committing additional resources to the football operation." Mr Savage  added:"For most season ticket holders, it will be the second season running that their prices have been frozen. It also flags up what exceptional per-match value a Caley Thistle season ticket now represents. "The careful financial planning of the board has enabled us to be in a position to agree the price freeze -- and we have a five-payment credit plan to help supporters who cannot pay the full season ticket amount up front." Manager Charlie Christie said:"Our fans have been terrific in our third SPL campaign and the management team and players are delighted at the price freeze." Les Kidger, chairman of the club's Supporters Trust, said:"This is an excellent gesture by the club and we hope it might give a lead to other SPL teams. The fans will greatly appreciate the price freeze." Season tickets -- both new and renewing -- will go on sale at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium next Wednesday at 10 am. Existing seats will be held until 4.30 pm on Monday, July 2, with released seats going on sale the following Monday. Some seat holders  will be moved to accommodate the new Singing Section which makes its debut in the Dunfermline game.
