Inverness CT 0-1 Aberdeen - SPL

Caley Thistle fail to find the net at home allowing Aberdeen to grab the points when Stevie Lovell scores in the 83rd minute. With Motherwell also winning, Caley Thistle slip to 8th and a top 6 finish looks less likely. Club Historian Ian Broadfoot reports on the match from the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium...

1st April 2006  Tulloch Caledonian Stadium INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE 0 Team: Brown, Tokely, Dods, Munro, Hastings (McAllister 86), Hart, Duncan, Black (Morgan 89), Wilson, Dargo (Bayne 73), Wyness

The home side’s top six aspirations took a severe dent with this defeat by bogey team Aberdeen – at the tenth attempt they have still never beaten their former landlords.
In the days leading up to the game heavy rain and a high spring tide resulted in a wet pitch and the match was in doubt. The weather improved and sterling work by ground staff meant that a 10am pitch inspection gave the green light for this vital match.
The stadium was virtually full as sixth placed Caley Thistle met the team lying just a point behind in the penultimate match before the league split. Ross Tokely’s return from suspension gave Charlie Christie a selection problem but he chose to restore him to the starting line-up at the expense of Stuart McCaffrey. Craig Dargo came back from illness to partner Dennis Wyness up front.
It turned out to be a close fought match with few shots on goal and could easily have ended 0-0. Steve Lovell changed all that in the 83rd minute with a bizarre goal that stunned the home fans.
The first half was pretty even but tough. In ten minutes an excellent Grant Munro through ball was chased by Dargo but Jamie Langfield reached it just ahead of him. Wyness hit two angled shots past the post in the 15th and 16th minutes then a Richie Hart long shot sailed over the bar.
Richard Hastings blocked a James Smith drive in 20 minutes then a Stevie Crawford overhead kick was taken easily by Mark Brown. In 31 minutes an Ian Black through ball was headed over the advancing Langfield by Dargo and a goal looked on the cards before Zander Diamond stepped in to clear the danger.
Aberdeen finished the first half strongly aided by the award of a couple of rather soft free kicks but the home defence held out.
Half Time: 0-0
The Dons were the stronger side in the second half and a Crawford header in 48 minutes went just wide. Brown turned a Smith free kick past the post in 52 minutes as Aberdeen continued to press. The match flared up in 77 minutes when Chris Clark went down at the left angle of the box and Clark chased Tokely to remonstrate. After order was restored the resultant free kick by Smith hit off Hastings and was collected by Brown.
Lovell’s winning goal in 83 minutes came out of very little. A high ball towards the home box tempted Brown to race out to collect but it hung in the air and Steve Lovell stepped in. He lobbed it goalwards and it looked like bouncing over the bar. The soft ground assisted and it went in for 1-0. Lovell collected a yellow card for his celebrations in front of the away fans and the stewards had to look lively to thwart an attempted pitch invasion.
The home side pressed hard in the remaining minutes and substitute Graham Bayne set up Ian Black 25 yards out but he hit high over the bar. Defender Hastings was withdrawn with four minutes left and striker Rory McAllister sent on to bolster the attack. Langfield punched away a Barry Wilson free kick then a Black chip into the box was cleared before Black was stretchered off with a knee injury following a foul. The delay took the time over the 90 minutes and Alan Morgan came on for Black. Morgan took the long-delayed free kick 40 yards out but it was held by Langfield.
Full Time 0-1
Smith was booked for throwing the ball away as Aberdeen did everything to hold on to their lead. They succeeded and moved back into the top six. Motherwell also won and moved to seventh with ICT slipping to eighth.  All will be decided next Saturday – Caley Thistle need to win and the others to lose but there is another scenario. An ICT win, an Aberdeen draw and a Motherwell defeat would also suffice because of the Inverness side’s superior goal difference.

ICT Director steps down

Teaser Paragraph:
Nigel Spiller has stepped down after five years as a director of Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC due to pressure of work following his relocation to the Luton area. Nigel, originally from Portsmouth, was unanimously re-elected to the Board at the October AGM but has submitted his resignation as his new job has restricted his opportunity to  make the ongoing input he would have wished.
"I've been at this club in stirring times and greatly enjoyed being part of it", he says,"but my work commitments in England make it impossible for me to continue."
Club chairman David Sutherland said:"Nigel was an excellent servant to the club and was particularly involved in the groundshare agreement which took us to Pittodrie and thus secured SPL entry. We appreciate he is not now in a position to continue and we'd like to express our gratitude for his service and wish him all the best in his future.
"We anticipate naming a replacement Board member within 14 days."

Hibernian 0-2 Inverness CT - SPL

Caley Thistle make it three wins out of three against Hibs this season with a fine 0-2 victory at Easter Road. Goals from Darren Dods and a Barry Wilson penalty secured all three points.

Saturday 25th March 2006  Easter Road, Edinburgh HIBERNIAN 0 Team: Malkowski, Whittaker, Caldwell, G Smith, Murphy, Sproule, Stewart (Dalglish 59), Thomson, Glass, Killen (Fletcher 56), Riordan
Subs – Hogg, McCluskey, Shields, D Smith & S Brown
INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE 2 (Dods 58, Wilson 78pen) Team: Brown, McCaffrey, Dods, Munro (Golabek 69), Hastings, Wilson, Black, Duncan, Morgan (Bayne 72), Hart, Wyness (Keogh 86)
Subs – Parratt, Fox, McAllister & Fraser
Referee M Ritchie  Attendance 12745  Man of the Match Info not supplied
A fine away win and a clean sweep over Hibs this season. Charlie Christie made one change from the team that narrowly lost 2-1 to Celtic in midweek. Barry Wilson came into the starting eleven and Graham Bayne reverted to the bench. Craig Dargo remained sidelined and with Ross Tokely still suspended Stuart McCaffrey continued at right back.
Hibs looked the better side in the opening exchanges but Caley Thistle’s Richie Hart was first to have a realistic sight of goal. He tested Zbigniew Malkowski in the Hibs goal with a low 25 yard free kick in 12 minutes.
Derek Riordan then attacked the visitors’ goal but he shot wide and another 12-yard effort from Riordan was blocked by McCaffrey. With seven minutes of the first half remaining Ivan Sproule was denied by the feet of Mark Brown then Brown tipped over a Chris Killen header. A long Alan Morgan pass set Dennis Wyness on a run but he shot at Malkowski from 18 yards.
Half Time: 0-0
The visitors started the second half well and within a minute Malkowski pushed an Ian Black long-range shot for a corner. The pressure was rewarded in 58 minutes with the opening goal. Grant Munro was the architect when a trademark long throw from the left came back to him and he headed the ball into the heart of the box. It fell for Darren Dods and he drove it low into the net from 12 yards. This was the unified club’s 900th competitive goal.
Almost immediately Hibs came close when a Riordan corner was missed by substitute Paul Dalglish then the other substitute Steven Fletcher hit it wide. A Riordan free kick from 30 yards in 67 minutes came close but Brown tipped it over as it headed for the top corner. Malkowski saved from Wilson then, with twelve minutes left, Wilson was tripped by Gary Caldwell in the box and Mike Ritchie pointed to the penalty spot. Wilson rose to his feet, took the penalty himself and scored goal number 901.
Many Hibs fans decided it was all over and started to leave. Their team tried to salvage something but Riordan hit wide, Gary Smith went down and failed to win a penalty then a Steven Whittaker shot was pushed for a corner by Brown.
In the four minutes added time Fletcher sent in a poor shot and it trundled over for a goal kick. There was still time for a Hibs corner which was headed off target by Caldwell – it fell for Riordan then Fletcher headed over the bar.
Full Time 0-2
The afternoon was made even better for the Caley Thistle camp when the score from Pittodrie came through – Aberdeen 2 Motherwell 2. Caley Thistle thus moved back into sixth place. With two games left before the split, next week’s home game against Aberdeen will be vital.

Stadium Made Smoke Free

Teaser Paragraph:
{mosimage} Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC confirmed today that there will be a total ban on smoking at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium with effect from Sunday 26th March. Presently the North and South stands are no smoking but following the new Scottish Executive legislation, the entire ground including main stand and west terrace, hospitality suites, concourse areas and offices will be “no smoking premises”. The clubs first “smoke free” fixture at the stadium will be against Aberdeen on Saturday 1st April. The club will be erecting “no smoking” signs at all entrances to the stadium to inform everybody entering of the smoke free status of the stadium.  Season ticket holders will be circulated in advance of the Aberdeen game and on the day there will be a positive message put across to fans within the stadium. Any person not adhering to these new arrangements will be subject to the clubs disciplinary procedures and may also make themselves liable to a fixed penalty fine and / or criminal prosecution. With more than 13,000 dying each year in Scotland from cancer related to tobacco use and an estimated 1,000 people dying from the effects of passive smoking, the Directors of ICTFC recognise the benefits of this legislation and look to the fans to support this new policy. Should anyone have any queries regarding the new policy please contact Mike Smith, Chief Executive on 01463 222880.

Celtic 2-1 Inverness CT - SPL

Richie Hart grabs a 90th minute consolation goal in a match where ICT played good football and in many eyes deserved at least a share of the spoils. Club Historian Ian Broadfoot reports on the match from Celtic Park.

Wednesday 22nd March 2006  Celtic Park, Glasgow  Celtic FC  2 (McManus 34, Maloney 78) Team: Boruc, Telfer, Wilson, Balde, McManus, Nakamura, Petrov (Pearson 28), Lennon, Maloney, Zurawski (Thompson 82), Hartson (Dublin 68)
Subs - Varga, Wallace, Lawson & Marshall
Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC  1 (Hart 90) Team: Brown, McCaffrey, Dods, Munro, Hastings, Hart, Duncan, Black (Wilson 71), Morgan, Bayne (McAllister 79), Wyness
Subs - Golabek, Keogh, Fox, Parratt & Fraser
Referee  C Richmond  Attendance  57451  Man of the Match  Niel Lennon (Celtic) A narrow defeat after a spirited Caley Thistle performance in front of a new club record crowd. An upset always looked unlikely but Celtic had to work hard for the three points. Craig Dargo was missing due to a virus and Ross Tokely was suspended. Dennis Wyness came back into the starting eleven and Stuart McCaffrey took Tokely’s place at right back.
It was a night of nostalgia as the life of Jimmy Johnstone was celebrated. The main stand entrance was awash with scarves, shirts and messages of condolence and his widow Agnes carried the newly-won CIS Cup onto the field before the game. The remaining Lisbon Lions joined her, the players and the crowd in a minute’s applause in memory of the ‘Greatest Ever Celtic Player’.
Celtic started the game at high speed and it took two superb saves in quick succession by Mark Brown to avoid Caley Thistle going behind. In just 15 seconds Shunsuke Nakamura was through but Brown dived to save then hold his low shot. Maciej Zurawski, the current holder of Jimmy Johnstone’s number seven shirt, was set up by John Hartson in three minutes but again Brown made a brilliant save from close range. Two minutes later a bouncing ball from the right reached Graham Bayne in the Celtic box and he tried to chip it over Artur Boruc – it beat the ‘keeper but cleared the bar. A Neil Lennon chip from 20 yards in 14 minutes went wide then in 21 minutes Brown made another excellent save from Nakamura. Celtic took the lead in 34 minutes when Stephen McManus rose high to head a Shaun Maloney corner goalwards – the ball soared high over Brown then dipped before crossing the line via the bar.
Half Time: 1-0
Hartson could have doubled the lead just after the break but he mishit a few yards out. Boruc saved from Bayne in 51 minutes then a poor Bobo Balde pass back caused some confusion. Boruc’s kick-out went high in the air and it broke to Ian Black 20 yards out, but he shot over. The good ICT spell continued as Boruc had to dive to hold a 25 yard shot from Dennis Wyness. Hartson went down in the Caley Thistle box on the hour mark but his penalty claim was rejected. Bayne hit wide in 75 minutes before Celtic’s lead was increased three minutes later. Darren Dods brought Maloney down 19 yards out and Maloney hit the free kick over the wall and into the top left corner – a repeat of his goal in the CIS Cup final three days earlier. Dion Dublin nearly touched in a third with two minutes left but a late surge by Caley Thistle was rewarded with a consolation goal. Barry Wilson and Rory McAllister combined to set up Richie Hart 25 yards out. Hart’s shot should have been covered by Boruc but he let it squirm under his body to make the final score 2-1.
Full Time: 2-1
Aberdeen moved up to sixth place last Saturday when ICT were idle and the Celtic result ensured that they were not dislodged.
