Inverness CT 0-0 Hibernian - SPL

INVERNESS CT 0-0 HIBERNIAN
Ian Broadfoot reports from the match at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium. Mark Brown made his 150th league appearance in this game and would no doubt have been quite happy to keep a clean sheet. Unfortunately however, none of the strikers could score at the other end and it ended goal-less.

12th August 2006  Tulloch Caledonian Stadium  INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE  0 Team: Brown, Tokely, Dods, Munro, Hastings, Wilson, Black (Keogh 71), Rankin, McBain, Dargo, Wyness (Bayne 67)
Subs: McCaffrey, Duncan, Sutherland, McAllister & Fraser
HIBERNIAN  0 Team: Malkowski, Whittaker, Murphy, Zemmama (Fletcher 64), Jones, Stewart, Brown, Thomson, Killen (Benjelloun 29), Shiels (Sproule 53), Konde
Subs: McNeil, Hogg, McCluskey, Fletcher, McDonald
Referee  Iain Brines  Attendance  4623  Man of the Match  Ian Black (ICT)     No goals but plenty of action and some near misses. Caley Thistle retained the same starting line up as last week and started at pace.   In the second minute John Rankin sent a quick free kick to Barry Wilson but his long range effort drifted wide. Wilson came closer in seven minutes when a Roy McBain interception set Craig Dargo off down the right. He found Wilson who cut inside, drew the ‘keeper and crossed along the face of the goal. Malkowski was out of position but Steven Whittaker booted it off the line.   In 13 minutes Hibs were awarded a free kick in a central position 30 yards out but Moroccan Merouane Zemmama leathered it miles over the bar. Wilson’s seventh minute effort was repeated in 22 minutes after Richard Hastings broke down the middle towards the Hibs goal. The move ended when Wilson crossed from the right with Malkowski caught out once more but Rob Jones cleared.   Hibs were dealt a blow when Chris Killen limped off in 29 minutes to be replaced by Abdessalam Benjelloun – his shirt read ‘Benji’ which made the reporters’ task that bit easier.   On the half hour mark a Zemmama free kick was headed clear by Ross Tokely but Michael Stewart pounced on it and sent in a rising shot from 25 yards – Mark Brown did well to punch it to safety. A Hibs 30 yard free kick close to the break caused amusement when Hibs’ Rob Jones joined the ICT wall – to applause from the home support Ian Black moved in front of him to protect his colleagues despite Jones being a foot taller.   As the half moved into three minutes added time a good ICT move produced the best chance of the half. Roy McBain was felled near the corner flag on the left and Wilson’s free kick reached Grant Munro via Dennis Wyness – the defender let fly from just outside the Hibs box and Malkowski produced a remarkable instinctive save.   Half Time: 0-0   Malkowski saved from McBain five minutes into the second half but little was on target after that. An excellent Darren Dods tackle stopped Benji down the left in 68 minutes then the Hibs substitute hit over the bar after good work by Stewart.   Liam Keogh replaced the hard working Black in 71 minutes and within seconds he shot wide from 30 yards. Hibs began to create more chances and a succession of corners led to pressure on the home defence. The speed of substitute Ivan Sproule was a major threat down the left but the defence held firm.   As time ran out a Barry Wilson shot came off Steven Fletcher to forlorn penalty claims, a McBain shot was blocked, Grant Munro headed a Thomson corner clear at the other end and a dangerous Benji ball raced across the ICT goal but was cleared to safety.   Two minutes over time McBain tried an angled shot from the left but it bounced off Graham Bayne and the whistle blew for full time.   Full Time: 0-0   A draw was about right and Caley Thistle remain in tenth spot.

Caley Thistle have been handed a home tie against Division Three side Dumbarton in Round Two of the CIS Cup. Dumbarton have one former Caley Thistle player in their ranks with David Bagan having switched to the 'sons' in the close season.
According to the Official Dumbarton Website , Sons gaffer Gerry McCabe had this to say about the tie which will be played on either the 22nd or 23rd August.
"Obviously, you would always prefer a home tie. However, you've got to get on with what the draw gives you and in our case it's a trip to Inverness. It goes without saying this will be a tough challenge, but the players will be looking forward to matching themselves against the Premier outfit."
Caley Thistle have only played Dumbarton once before and this was also in the CIS Cup (round 1). The match took place on Tuesday September 10th 2002 at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium and the Caley Jags won it 2-0 with goals coming from Dennis Wyness and Paul Ritchie.
Missing from the draw are Rangers, Celtic,  Hearts and Gretna who all receive a bye to the next round because they are participating in European competitions.

Proctor Away ?

Teaser Paragraph:
According to press reports emanating from Dundee, and a later confirmation from ICT boss Charlie Christie, a deal has been agreed that should see David Proctor finally sign for Dundee United.
The young defender is believed to have agreed terms with the Tannadice side and after a number of well documented public spats, the clubs are thought to have agreed a fee in the region of £30,000.
It remains to be seen whether reported bids for Ian Black and want-away defender Darren Dods will come to anything especially with ICT Chairman David Sutherland previously stating that no players who were in the manager's plans would be sold to United and both Black and Dods would certainly fall into that category.
After the initial story appeared in the Dundee press, Caley Thistle manager Charlie Christie was quoted as saying the following at the ICT weekly press conference
"United came in this morning with a fresh offer, which meets our valuation and, this afternoon, I have given David permission to go and discuss terms with them. The paperwork should be cleared in time for United's game this weekend. He is a good lad who has suffered here through our depth of midfield quality"

Dods Requests Transfer

Teaser Paragraph:
Caley Thistle received a faxed transfer request from the agent of Darren Dods today which has has been turned down.
Director of football Graeme Bennett says:"We have notified the agent that the situation remains unchanged from our last meeting at the end of July when we indicated that we expected to see Dods honour his contract to play for us this season. That is the end of the matter as far as we're concerned."
Caley Thistle have today received a transfer request from Darren Dods, by fax from his agent. This has been turned down. Director of football Graeme Bennett says:"We have notified the agent that the situation remains unchanged from our last meeting at the end of July when we indicated that we expected to see Dods honour his contract to play for us this season. "That is the end of the matter as far as we're concerned." Should he stay or go ?  Vote in our Poll

Caley Thistle are also disappointed to note fresh media stories in which Craig Brewster criticises the Inverness club for not selling players he has bid for. Mr Bennett says:"We have today spoken to Dundee United chairman Eddie Thomson about this blatant attempt to unsettle our players. "The only player we were prepared to have dialogue with United about was David Proctor but their offer did not meet our valuation. That remains the position and business will only be done if they meet our price for this player. "All other players are not for sale, as our chairman made extremely clear in his statement two weeks ago. In  the light of that statement, Mr Brewster's comments are unprofessional. Our board gave him his first opportunity in management  and we're very disappointed to see him act in this manner towards us. "Basically, he's complaining because we exercise our right to keep our players. That smacks of desperation. We're fed up with it, our fans are fed up with it, and we'd like to concentrate on our own season rather than keep hearing how frustrated Dundee United are." Discuss this on the message boards ...

Aberdeen 1-1 inverness CT - SPL

ABERDEEN 1:1 INVERNESS CT
Caley Thistle made another journey along the very familiar A96 to play former landlords Aberdeen and came back with a well deserved point. Ian Broadfoot provides the official report from Pittodrie Stadium    5th August 2006  Pittodrie Stadium, Aberdeen  ABERDEEN  1 (Crawford 28) Team: Langfield, Hart, Byrne, Anderson, Foster, Clark, Smith, Nicholson (Dempsey 48), Touzani, Lovell (Mackie 57), Crawford (Severin 78)
Subs – Stewart, Winter, MacAulay & Soutar
INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE  1 (Wilson 88) Team: Brown, Tokely, Dods, Munro, Hastings, Wilson, Black, Rankin, McBain (McAllister 84), Wyness (Bain 72), Dargo (Keogh 90)
Subs – McCaffrey, Duncan, Sutherland & Fraser
Referee  Calum Murray  Attendance  11955  Man of the Match  Stephen Crawford (Aberdeen)   Caley Thistle made another journey along the very familiar A96 to play former landlords Aberdeen and came back with a well deserved point.   Two well-matched sides duelled in the sun with Aberdeen having the edge in the first half and ICT fighting back in the second before scoring a very late (and bizarre) equaliser.   Charlie Christie made three changes to his starting eleven with a fit-again Ross Tokely replacing Stuart McCaffrey at right back, Richard Hastings returning to the left back slot at the expense of Stuart Golabek and Roy McBain coming into midfield in place of Russell Duncan. Christie’s assistant Donald Park reached the milestone of 100 club games in the assistant manager role, including his time alongside John Robertson.   Aberdeen started well and Grant Munro showed his mettle in the sixth minute with an excellent tackle on Stevie Crawford as he headed for goal. Two minutes later Tokely sent Barry Wilson clear down the right but his dangerous cross was cleared. Dennis Wyness then had a glimpse of goal but his angled shot from the right went wide. This good ICT spell continued and in ten minutes a Craig Dargo cross from the right reached Wyness and he went down in the box as he turned to shoot. The referee was right on the spot and he waved play on but the ICT camp felt it was a penalty.   Aberdeen gradually began to exert pressure on the ICT defence but it held firm until the 28th minute when a Ricky Foster through ball reached Crawford seemingly offside. As Mark Brown narrowed the angle Crawford stretched to slide the ball home. The offside protests were waved away and the goal stood. A minute later Barry Wilson took a very quick free kick from 35 yards out as Langfield positioned himself but it flew just wide.   Aberdeen pressed for a second goal with Jamie Smith prominent – he hit off target twice then a fierce drive rebounded off the back of Ian Black. In 36 minutes a low Barry Nicholson free kick from 25 yards was punched clear expertly by the diving Mark Brown. The half ended with flurries at both ends but no more scoring.   Half Time: 1-0   The Aberdeen defence was put under pressure from the start of the second half and in 53 minutes Wilson was unlucky to see his on-target shot blocked by one of his own players in a crowded box. Dargo set up McBain in 64 minutes but his angled shot from the left was deflected for a corner. At the other end Brown did well to take a bouncing ball at the feet of Darren Mackie in 72 minutes.    With ten minutes left a neat cut inside from Tokely found Dargo on the right of the Aberdeen box and in space – his rising shot went over the bar. Time was running out and it looked as if all the efforts had been in vain - that changed two minutes from the end of the regulation 90. The architect was Hastings as he robbed Gary Dempsey on the left and slipped it to Dargo on the edge of the box. His lob goalwards looked an easy catch for Langfield but he somehow dropped it under pressure (mainly from his own players) and it fell for Barry Wilson facing an open goal and just three yards out. Unable to believe his good fortune he calmly rolled the ball in for the equaliser.
The five added minutes produced only frustration as the game degenerated into a series of fouls and bad tempered exchanges.   Full Time: 1-1   A point apiece was fair and Caley Thistle move up a notch to tenth.

Aberdeen - Preview

Teaser Paragraph:
Aberdeen have always proven to be a bit of a bogey team for ICT.  If ever there was a time for the players to lay that ghost to rest it was now.  The bookies have Aberdeen as the favourites, however, after last weeks performance against St Mirren we will be keen to get some points on the board. Aberdeen v ICT
DETAILS Date: Saturday 5th August 2006 at 3pm Referee: Calum Murray Tickets: Pay at the gate. TV-info: Highlights available on Scotsport SPL on Monday evening at 11.30pm.
FIXTURES Saturday 5th August: ABERDEEN V INVERNESS CT (3pm) Falkirk v Dunfermline (3pm) Kilmarnock v Hibernian (3pm) Rangers v Dundee Utd (3pm) St Mirren v Motherwell (3pm)
Sunday 6th August: Hearts v Celtic (Setanta, 2pm) RECENT FORM INVERNESS CT: Inverness have had a pretty good pre-season. Due to a possible place in the Intertoto Cup, a tour could not be planned until the last minute. As a result, Inverness didn’t get into the cup and so it was off to Italy where they won 12-0 and 5-0 against Montecatini and Tuscan Select respectively. Then it was back home where there were victories against Elgin City (2-0), Clach (6-0), Deveronvale (2-0), and Ross County (3-0) and an understrength team went down to Peterhead (3-2). Also Ross Tokely had a testimonial against a strong Sheffield United side where Caley Thistle went down 3-0. Last week they kicked off their SPL campaign with a 2-1 loss to St Mirren at home. After taking the lead through Craig Dargo, John Sutton stunned the Highlanders with a double to take all three points. Inverness never really got going and will need to improve for the visit to Aberdeen. ABERDEEN: Aberdeen had a mixed pre-season. They won 2 games easily against Highland league teams then went on a tour to South Africa where they only lost one game. They returned home and beat Montrose in their last pre-season game and Calderwood has high hopes for the season ahead. The Dons started the season away to Hibernian and took the lead against the run of play through Stevie Crawford. Although Hibernian deservedly equalised when Dean Shiels scored after 31 mins. The game finished 1-1 and Aberdeen where happy with their point. PAST MEETINGS The teams have played a total of 10 times (6 League, 4 Cup) with 17 goals (4 Inverness CT, 13 Aberdeen) between them. Inverness CT: 0 wins (0 League, 0 Cup) Draws: 4 (3 League, 1 Cup) Aberdeen: 6 wins (3 League, 3 Cup) A GAME TO REMEMBER For this weeks game to remember we take you back to the year that Inverness CT were put on the footballing map. After beating Celtic in the third round on their own patch Inverness were out for some more giant killing against Aberdeen in the 4th round. On the 20th of February 2000, Inverness CT appeared on Sky Sports for the first ever time at home to the Dons. Inverness took the lead through Bobby Mann on 50 mins but Aberdeen stole a replay with 10 mins to go as Guntveit equalised. The attendance was 6290. The teams were as follows: INVERNESS CT: Calder, Tokely, Golabek, Teasdale, Mann, Sheerin, Bavidge, McCulloch, Wilson, Christie, Wyness. Subs- Byers, Glancy, Hind. ABERDEEN: Leighton, Whyte, Solberg, Anderson, McAllister, Bernard, Dow, Guntveit, Stavrum, Rutkiewicz, Winters. Subs- Clark, Belabed, Perry. The referee was Kenny Clark and there were three bookings on the day. Mann (Inverness CT), Anderson and Guntveit (Aberdeen). Four Inverness players still play for the club and there is one who is now the manager of the club. FACTS BETWEEN THE TEAMS • All League meetings between the teams have taken place in the SPL. • Aberdeen are unbeaten in all fixtures between the teams. • The biggest win in the fixture was when Aberdeen won 3-1 on 16/4/2004 away to us at Pittodrie! McBain scored Inverness’s solo goal. • The last meeting was on 1/4/2006. It was a top six decider which Aberdeen won 1-0. It was a tightly contested match in which 7368 turned up to see Lovell score the only goal. PLAYERS TO WATCH Craig Dargo (ICT): The Caley Thistle forward continued last week where he finished off last season by opening his account with a diving header. Dargo will be keen to match last season total of goals and possibly earn a Scotland call-up. Darren Mackie (Aberdeen): The striker has a lot to thank Inverness for. Had we not taking him on loan Calderwood would not have giving him a chance. He scored 5 goals last season though and will need to be much better to stay in the manager’s plans.  FUTURE FIXTURES 4th Nov 2006 at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium 13th Jan 2007 at Pittodrie Stadium

Inverness CT 1-2 St Mirren - SPL

Caley Thistle fans could be excused for feeling confident that they would get a result, especially after going 5 games unbeaten at the end of last season, having had no major squad rebuilding issues in the close season, and facing the prospect of playing a side they hadn't lost to in 12 games. Unfortunately however, someone forgot to tell Gus McPherson and most of the ICT players that an ICT victory was expected as the Buddies deservedly won this match.
Club Historian Ian Broadfoot reports from Tulloch Caledonian Stadium
29th July 2006  Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, Inverness Inverness Caledonian Thistle  1 (Dargo 48) Team: Brown, McCaffrey, Dods, Munro, Golabek (Bayne 78), Wilson, Duncan (Keogh 65), Black, Rankin, Dargo, Wyness
Subs – Hart, Morgan, Soane, Sutherland & Fraser
St Mirren  2 (Kean 55, Sutton 75) Team: Smith, Van Zanten, Broadfoot, McGowne, Potter, Murray, Lappin, Sutton, Kean, Brady (Brittain 69), Molloy
Subs – Burke, Corcoran, Maxwell, McCay, McKenna & Bullock
Referee  Alan Freeland  Attendance  4267  Man of the Match  John Rankin
A very disappointing start to the season for Caley Thistle but SPL newcomers St Mirren were understandably delighted. Two goals from John Sutton (but with Stewart Kean still claiming the first) saw them come from behind to take the points in a match that only came to life in the second half.
With Ross Tokely sidelined Stuart McCaffrey occupied the right back spot in the home side and new signing John Rankin started in left midfield. The Saints defence was under pressure for the first 15 minutes but nothing quite came off. Barry Wilson took a quick free kick from long distance in six minutes with ‘keeper Chris Smith out of position but he struck it over the bar.
A high ball from Rankin in 15 minutes reached Dennis Wyness but he shot wide from 20 yards. Sutton almost broke through for Saints in 20 minutes but McCaffrey saved the day with a fine tackle. Wilson then cleared from David Van Zanten as he headed for goal before Craig Dargo went down 19 yards out at the other end.  It was too theatrical for Alan Freeland and play was waved on.
Play was generally scrappy with few moments of interest. One of these came in 37 minutes when Wilson did well to set Dargo on track – he crossed from the right for Ian Black but the defence cleared. An angled shot from Dargo just before the break was cleared for a corner by Kirk Broadfoot but otherwise the half petered out.
Half Time: 0-0
The second half was much better and a minute after the restart a Russell Duncan sidefoot shot was diverted for a corner. Smith failed to hold Rankin’s flag kick and the ball broke back to him – he found Wilson but his chip went wide. The opening goal came in 48 minutes when an inch-perfect Rankin cross from the left was met by a fine Dargo header from close range.
It was now looking good for ICT but that changed in 55 minutes. A ball sent left to right just eluded Stuart Golabek and Craig Molloy had a clear shot on goal from just inside the box. Mark Brown did well to push it away but Sutton and Kean between them scored from the rebound.
An Ian Black acrobatic shot in 61 minutes was held by Smith then in 70 minutes Broadfoot headed over a Simon Lappin free kick.
Saints’ winner came out of nothing. A long bouncing clearance from Smith looked harmless as it headed towards the ICT goal but with the central defenders hesitating Sutton stepped in to touch it past Brown.
Caley Thistle fought hard to equalise after this blow but failed - Wilson hit a 20 yard shot at Smith, Wyness sent an angled ball over after a good Wilson/Dargo move then Smith held a Black chip. Into added time and Saints were content to hold the ball in the corner and count down the seconds. The final move was a Graham Bayne attempt to intercept a Smith clearance but it flew to safety.
Full Time: 1-2
