Player of the Year 2005-06

Teaser Paragraph:
Even before the votes for the last three games of the season are tallied (last weeks game at Livi plus the final two games), it is now clear that Craig Dargo has been voted by the fans as the CaleyThistleOnline.com Player of the Year 2005/06 Craig was rewarded for his tremendous season with the Players' Player of the Year trophy after the last home game against Dundee United, and the website fans who vote throughout the season for the best performers in each match have agreed with the players that Craig was the man who made the biggest impact for Caley Thistle as we journeyed through this season. Player POY PTS TOTAL VOTES Dargo Craig 69 269 Dods Darren 46 245 Brown Mark 43 240 Black Ian 40 164 Wilson Barry 39 191 Tokely Ross 23 157 Hart Richard 22 98 Morgan Alan 20 82 Duncan Russell 17 94 Wyness Dennis 14 79 Brewster Craig 11 75 Proctor David 11 70 McBain Roy 9 53 Hastings Richard 7 56 McCaffrey Stuart 4 24 Munro Grant 1 53 Golabek Stuart 1 13 Keogh Liam 0 33 Fox Liam 0 13 Bayne Graham 0 9 McAllister Rory 0 9 Hislop Steven 0 2 Parratt Tom 0 0 Finnegan Chris 0 0 Fraser Michael 0 0 Darren 'The Machine' Dods, who won the supporters player of the Year award is fighting it out for second place with Mark Brown, and Barry Wilson. Any of these three players can still finish second to Craig in the voting, but Ian Black, the other player in the top 5 cannot add to his points tally as unfortunatley, his season is already over. How Does it Work ? Started in season 2000/2001, the CaleyThistleOnline.com Player of the Year trophy is awarded at the end of each season to the player that supporters have voted to be the most consistent over a whole season.
After every League and Cup game of the season, supporters who were at the game can vote on who performed best in that match. The voting traditionally took place on the Player of the Year forum on the old SportNetwork site but since the redesign, we now run a weekly poll which is open for 7 days from the final whistle of any game. This allows website users to vote for the players they think were the top 3 performers in that match. The top player is awarded 5 'match points', the 2nd gets 3 'match points' and the third gets 1 'match point'. When the voting is closed, we tally up both the quantity of votes (regardless of whether they are 5, 3 , or 1 point votes) and also the number of points awarded.
ICT PLAYERS OF THE MONTH 2005/06 MONTH PLAYER August 2005 Craig Brewster 53 votes September 2005 Mark Brown 42 votes October 2005 Darren Dods 43 votes November 2005 Ian Black 43 votes December 2005 Craig Dargo 64 votes January 2006 Mark Brown 49 votes February 2006 Craig Dargo 34 votes March 2006 Richard Hart 26 votes April 2006 ? May 2006 ? The quantity of votes a player receives in any match is counted up and the player with the highest quantity of votes at the end of each month is deemed to be the CaleyThistleOnline Player of the Month. This allows consistent performers who may get loads of 1 or 3 point votes but not too many 5 pointers to be in with a shout at being Player of the Month. Player of the Year Points are calculated by counting up the number of points awarded to the player for each match by website users. We add up all the points for each player for each match and when they are all counted, the top 3 players in each match (highest match point totals) are awarded 5, 3, or 1 player of the year points respectively.

Player of the year points are counted up over the season and the player with the highest POY points total receives the CaleyThistleOnline Player of The Year trophy at an end of season awards ceremony.
Winners YEAR PLAYER 2000/2001 Bobby Mann 2001/2002 Barry Robson 2002/2003 Stuart Golabek 2003/2004 Liam Keogh 2004/2005 Ross Tokely 2005/2006 Craig Dargo

WELL DONE to Craig, who now joins those who have previously won the trophy. No-one has been able to win it two season's in a row, here's hoping that not only Craig but all of our top challengers from this season will be around to try and win it next year ....

Livingston 0-1 Inverness CT - SPL

Former Livingston winger Barry Wilson scored the goal that won it for Caley Thistle. Although this win officially consigned Livi to life in Division One next season, with Falkirk and Dunfermline both winning, Livingston's fate was sealed regardless of the result in this match. Full Match report from Club Historian Ian Broadfoot.

29th April 2006 City Stadium, Livingston  LIVINGSTON  0 Team: McKenzie, McNamee (Tierney 67), Pinxten, MacKay, Brittain, Morrow (Hislop 25), Hoolahan, Dorado, Whelan, Healy, Adams (Dorrans 61)
Subs – Snodgrass, Miller, Strong & Woods
INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE  1 (Wilson 56) Team: Brown, Tokely, Dods, Munro, Golabek, Wilson (Fox 72), Keogh, Duncan, McBain, Dargo (Bayne 61), Wyness (McAllister 83)
Subs – Parratt, McCaffrey, Morgan & Fraser
Referee  J Underhill  Attendance  2278  Man of the Match  Dave MacKay (Livingston)     This fourth visit of the season to Livingston was the 32nd meeting of the clubs in competitive matches – Caley Thistle are now ahead with 13 wins to 11. Some of these encounters have been classics but this was certainly not one of them. The only real bright spots were the glorious sun and Barry Wilson’s 56th minute goal direct from a free kick.   John Robertson’s side were effectively relegated before the match but this result put the matter beyond any lingering doubt held by the most outrageous optimist.   Motherwell’s defeat ended the race for seventh spot so Caley Thistle will now complete the season one place higher than 2004/05.   The first real chance fell to Wilson in 13 minutes but his 20 yard free kick curled just past the Livi post. Two minutes later Craig Dargo nipped in to head the ball as it went through to Livi ‘keeper Roddy McKenzie – he was forced wide and Manu Dorado cleared his bye-line cross. A poor kick-out by McKenzie in 18 minutes led to a Dennis Wyness long-range lob to the empty goal but a defender stepped in to block. Mark Brown’s first action of the day came in 20 minutes when he held a Sam Morrow shot on the turn – just one minute before Morrow was injured. He tried to carry on but limped off and was replaced by former ICT favourite Steve Hislop. The lively Wes Hoolahan sent in a dangerous cross from the left in 23 minutes and Brown had to dive bravely at the feet of Noel Whelan. Five minutes from the break Wilson pounced on an error by David McNamee 25 yards out but, as he raced for goal, McNamee brought him down on the edge of the box. The expected free kick (or perhaps a penalty) was not given.   Half Time: 0-0   Straight from the restart a Hoolahan cross from the right reached Hislop but his header went wide of Brown’s post. Dave MacKay was well placed 20 yards out in 52 minutes but he sliced it so badly it went for a throw. The goal came in 56 minutes and it was one worthy of messrs Beckham and Maloney. Wyness was fouled 20 yards out and Wilson curled the free kick over the wall and under the bar before McKenzie could react. There was no way back for Livi despite much huffing and puffing. The next chance fell to ICT sub Graham Bayne in 76 minutes but his back post header went just wide. Three minutes later Hoolahan created danger in the visitors’ box but Grant Munro was well placed to head clear. A curling ball from Hoolahan five minutes from time was punched clear by Brown. Liam Keogh could have made it 2-0 in the last minute when he raced from the half way line chased by McNamee. The defender eventually caught up with him and did enough to prevent a clear shot on goal – it went wide. Dorado blocked a Rory McAllister shot as time ran out then the last action was a Keogh tackle on Hoolahan as he headed for goal.   Full Time 0-1   The whistle went and the strains of ‘The only way is up’ came from the tannoy. Not strictly true but Livi have to hold on to the hope of an early return to the top flight.

HM4 - On Your Marks, Get Set...

Teaser Paragraph:
A Group of hardy ICT InterNutters are at it again as final plans are laid down, supplies are gathered and anti-blister creams, lotions and potions are applied.  This year the Marchers set out bright and early at 8am from Tulloch Caledonian Stadium on Sunday 30th April for the first leg - a 23 mile jaunt which takes them as far as Sluggan (Carrbridge). WHY??? - Well it all started back in 2002 - Interthenet wanted nothing more to do on his 50th Birthday than walk to a football ground to watch his beloved Inverness Caledonian Thistle.  He started telling people of his mad plan and was rousing interest from various other InterNutters.  It was mentioned that it may raise the profile of the walk if it were to become a Charity Event.  It was also thought that it would be clever if the walk could be done from the penultimate fixture to the final fixture of the season, and this has remained the tradition of the InterNutters annual outing ever since. Bronson, Elvis, Caley Canary, Gringo Junior, Gringo and Mrs Gringo were to join Interthenet on HM1 - a walk of 160 Miles from Inverness to Falkirk in May 2003. April 2006 and the fixtures haven't been so kind due to the season ending earlier to release players for World Cup duties.  Walking the penultimate game to the last game would mean a trek of over 145 miles in less than 3 days.  You'd have to be a real 'Nutter' to attempt that, right?  Well, thats exactly what one of the marchers is going to do, and you've guessed it, it will be Interthenet (Yompa) - keeping the Highland March tradition alive.  He will leave Tulloch Caledonian Stadium on Wednesday night after the match and make a bee-line south, picking up with the rest of the troops en route. The Marchers have again been busy raising money for Charity by selling raffle tickets.  All proceeds from the raffle and collections en route will benefit the MFR Charity Trust and Team ICT.  A bucket collection will take place at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium on Wednesday 3rd May prior to the Falkirk match. "TEAM GRINGO" Gringo, Gringo Jnr, Beatonio, Egg + Guests Support Driver - CaleyD "TEAM YOMPA" Yompa (The InterNutter previously know as Interthenet) Support Driver - Caley Canary It's going to be tough week for all of the marchers and your support would be very much appreciated throughout the route. Anyone who would like to join the marchers en route - even for a couple of miles - at any stage during the event - is more than welcome. Inverness CT 1-0 Dundee Utd - SPL

Club Historian Ian Broadfoot reports from the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium as Charlie Christie makes it two wins out of two against former gaffer Craig Brewster. The game was heading for a scoreless draw when Craig Dargo scored a winner deep inside 2nd half injury time.

22nd April 2006  Tulloch Caledonian Stadium  Inverness Caledonian Thistle  1 (Dargo 90) Team: Brown, Tokely, Dods, Hastings, Golabek, Wilson, Keogh, McBain (Morgan 63), Hart, Dargo, Wyness (McAllister 80)
Subs - McCaffrey, Bayne, Parratt, Z Sutherland & Fraser
Dundee United  0 Team: Samson, McCracken, Archibald, Mulgrew, Kerr, Brebner (Abbott 85), Duff, Samuel, Ritchie, Robertson (Goodwillie 75), Gardiner
Subs - Kenneth, Cameron, Callaghan, Easton & McLean
Referee  M Tumilty  Attendance  3609  Man of the Match  Darren Dods (ICT)     For 91minutes and 40 seconds this was a drab affair but Craig Dargo popped up at the death to score his nineteenth goal of the season and secure the points for Caley Thistle. This was Craig Brewster's first return to Inverness with his new side and he left bitterly disappointed. Once more Charlie Christie shuffled his side as Dennis Wyness returned from injury and Richard Hastings played in a centre back position instead of Grant Munro. Richie Hart and Roy McBain also came into the starting eleven.
Conditions were not suited to good football with a strong, cold, swirling wind that favoured United in the first half.
Neither side could come to grips with the wind and it was 19 minutes before the first shot on target. Liam Keogh made a run at the edge of the United box and sent an excellent pass to Hart on the left. Hart hit an on-target low ball but Craig Samson dived to turn it round the post. In 28 minutes a long range Grant Brebner shot was heading for Mark Brown's goal but it bounced off Collin Samuel to safety. Just before the break a curling Ross Gardiner ball from the left was aimed for Samuel in the Caley Thistle box but it flashed past him.
Half Time: 0-0
In 52 minutes a Hart corner from the left was hit goalwards by Craig Dargo and Samson fumbled it. Luckily for United Charlie Mulgrew was on hand to clear off the line. Dargo set up Barry Wilson two minutes later but Mulgrew robbed him as he prepared to shoot. It took until eight minutes from time before Brown was tested. A Mulgrew free kick from 25 yards was deflected and Brown was forced to push it round the post. The home side pushed hard in the last few minutes and with 87 minutes on the clock a McAllister/Tokely/Wilson move on the right set up Alan Morgan but his low shot on the turn went wide. The assistant referee signalled two minutes of added time and Caley Thistle needed virtually all of it. The all-important goal came as Alan Archibald hesitated on the edge of his own area and Dargo nipped in to take possession. He took a couple of steps before sending a low ball past Samson and setting the home stands alight. There was just time for the kick-off before the final whistle sounded and the home side were given a standing ovation as they left the pitch - something that seemed highly unlikely a few minutes before.
Full Time: 1-0
With Motherwell only taking a point from Falkirk, seventh place was retained  with a gap of four points. This was the last Saturday home match of the season so fans were polled for the prestigious Supporters’ Player of the Year award. The recipient was Darren Dods and he was presented with the trophy in the Kingsmills Suite after the game. The Players’ Player of the Year award went to top goalscorer Craig Dargo.

Motherwell 0-1 - SPL

Club historian Ian Broadfoot reports from Fir Park, Motherwell as Craig Dargo scores his 15th league goal of the season in the 27th minute of this match to take all three points back up the A9. Alexander Sutherland was promoted from the reserves into the first team pool during the week and was on the bench.

15th April 2006 Fir Park, Motherwell  Motherwell  0 Team: Smith, Corrigan, Craigan, McLean, Hammell, Paterson (Kinniburgh 64),  McCormack, O'Donnell, Foran (Clarkson 70), Hamilton (Kerr 59), McDonald
Subs: Meldrum, Leitch, McGarry, McBride
Inverness Caledonian Thistle  1 (Dargo 27) Team: Brown, Tokely, Dods, Munro, Golabek, Wilson (Hart 79), Duncan, Morgan (McBain 71), Keogh, Dargo, Bayne (McAllister 81)
Subs: Fraser, McCaffrey, Fox, Sutherland
Referee  D McDonald  Attendance  3438  Man of the Match  Not Supplied  Sent Off  McCormack (Motherwell)     A boring end-of-season encounter this most certainly was not. In December Craig Dargo scored twice at Fir Park to take the points and this time his 27th minute strike was enough to see off a determined Motherwell side. The Inverness side was shaken up a little with Liam Keogh, Graham Bayne and Stuart Golabek coming into the starting eleven. There was also a first bench appearance for eighteen year old Zander Sutherland.   Motherwell had the first crack at goal in five minutes when Scott McDonald threaded the ball through for Phil O’Donnell but Mark Brown turned his shot past for a corner. The home side continued to press and a dipping Steve Hammell free kick in 22 minutes just cleared Brown’s bar. It was the visitors who took a decisive lead in 27 minutes when a high Grant Munro ball out of defence was aimed for Dargo and he outpaced two defenders to set up a one-on-one with Graeme Smith. Dargo neatly sent a low ball into the net for the game’s only goal. Three minutes later an Alan Morgan ball in from the left wing rebounded off Dargo’s back into the path of Russell Duncan – his 25 yard blast was well saved by Smith. A Jim Hamilton close-range shot was deflected for a corner by Darren Dods in 35 minutes then, close to half time, Dargo ran half the length of the park then set up Barry Wilson. Wilson’s shot was saved by Smith but it came back out to give Wilson another chance – once more Smith was equal to the task.   Half Time: 0-1   Six minutes after the break the match flared up when Richie Foran fouled Duncan on the left. Alan McCormick waded in as Duncan expressed his displeasure and yellow cards were shown to both Duncan and McCormick. Inexplicably a minute later McCormick raced over to the right and clattered Ross Tokely. The rest was inevitable – a second yellow and a walk to the dressing room. ICT never managed to take real advantage of the extra man and it was the Steelmen who next came close. In 64 minutes a quick Brian Kerr free kick was sent into the box by McDonald and it came off both Kerr and Brian McLean – it could have gone anywhere but it went over for a goal kick. Brown dived to collect an O’Donnell header in 76 minutes then, with seven minutes left, ICT substitute Rory McAllister won the ball off William Kinniburgh to set up a couple of chances – McAllister’s shot was blocked then Keogh’s follow-up was well saved by Smith. Three minutes from time a dangerous curling Richie Hart effort from 20 yards was pushed away by Smith.   FullTime: 0-1   A hectic three minutes of added time came to nothing and the points pushed Caley Thistle above Motherwell into seventh place.  With 46 points on the board, and four games left, last season’s total of 44 has also been overtaken.

Livingston 2-1 Inverness CT - SPL

Ross Tokely scores for Caley Thistle but Richard Brittain and Colin Healy score for Livingston to keep their faint hopes of avoiding relegation alive. With Aberdeen winning against Hibs, the top 6 spot was lost regardless of this game so its off to Fir Park next week for the first of the post split games.
With Livingston fighting against relegation and Caley Thistle striving for a top six finish there was much at stake in this match. Livi had not won under John Robertson and it was ironic that this run should end against his former club.

8th April 2006 City Stadium, Livingston LIVINGSTON  2 (Brittain 37, Healy 80) Team: McKenzie, Mackay, Strong, Pinxten, Tierney, Brittain, Walker (Vincze 74),  Healy (Adams 83), Hoolahan, Whelan (Hislop 78), Morrow
Subs: Roy, Snodgrass, Miller, Dorrans
INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE  1 (Tokely 16) Team: Brown, Tokely, Dods, Munro, Hastings, Wilson, Hart (McAllister 78), Duncan,  Morgan, Dargo, Wyness
Subs: Fraser, Golabek, McCaffrey, Bayne, Fox, Jackson
Referee  C Murray  Attendance  2688  Man of the Match  Hoolahan (Livingston)     Caley Thistle had it all to do after losing last week against Aberdeen – they had to win and Motherwell and Aberdeen had to drop points. ICT were without Ian Black and Alan Morgan came into the starting eleven.   Livi started well and Mark Brown was a busy man in the opening minutes. Caley Thistle took the lead in 16 minutes when Roddy McKenzie touched a Barry Wilson shot round for a corner. Richie Hart took the kick from the left and Ross Tokely headed home from an acute angle. At this point it was looking good as the Aberdeen and Motherwell matches were both goalless. Things changed rapidly when in 21 minutes the Dons took the lead against Hibs and, at Almondvale, Richard Brittain headed an equaliser for Livingston in 37 minutes. Colin Healy found Noel Whelan on the right and his chip to the back post was headed in from six yards by the unmarked Brittain. In the run up to half time referee Calum Murray booked four Livi players including substitute Steve Hislop who was warming up on the touchline.   Half Time: 1-1   A mistake by Harold Pinxten in 59 minutes allowed Dennis Wyness a clear run in on McKenzie. He rounded the ‘keeper but Greg Strong cleared off the line. A minute later Craig Dargo chipped over the advancing keeper but it cleared the crossbar. The visitors were convinced a penalty should have been awarded when Morgan was apparently fouled but amidst protests play continued. The winning goal came with ten minutes left - Brittain split the defence with a through pass and Healy ran on then hit low past Brown from 12 yards. Substitute Rory McAllister had two wide efforts in the closing minutes for Caley Thistle but Livi held on for a vital win.    Full Time 2-1   They still look like going down but have narrowed the gap to eight points and Dunfermline now lie eleventh. In the event Aberdeen beat Hibs 1-0 to clinch a top six place so ICT would have missed out even if they had beaten Livingston. Motherwell lost 1-0 to Rangers but it made no difference. For ICT the top six dream is over for another season and the target is now to overtake Motherwell to clinch seventh place.
