  1. February 1989, round about the 6th. We were bothying up at the end of Loch Arkaig. Even going in on the Friday the loch was lapping at the low dyke by the road. Had an epic on the Sunday coming off the hill in the dark due to swollen burns. Had to abandon the car on the Monday as the road was flooded.
Got into Fort William on a school bus and all the shops had sandbags. The trains were chaotic and we finally got into Central to find there were no more Edinburgh trains. They gave us a taxi but the driver had obviously never been out of Glasgow before.
Got to Waverley only to find our car was locked inside. Finally got home about 3am and work the next day 😂

They'll be doing this because that is the way they've been told to play. The incentive is that if you don't do what the manager tells you to do then you'll get dropped. Presumably the manager is happy for them to focus on keeping possession rather than take a more positive, but more risky option.

If you watch non league matches in front of a few dozen souls, you can usually hear the manager threatening them with this …

You're right, of course.  I would argue that it's less risky to lose possession midway inside your opponent's half than on the edge of your own box.  But what do I know?

Remember the days when the CM passed it in front of the full back for him to run on to. Haven’t seen that happen for years. Seems to be always slightly behind the man. Safety first every time. Not droning on about the good old days, sure everything’s technically better these days, but the entertainment value is zero, and the rise in admission prices is shocking, far beyond inflation.

  4. Wasn’t impressed second half tbqh. Seemed to be happy to see the game out at 2-0. Thought the 4 subs might raise the tempo but apart from Billy looking a cut above, it was just too many square passes. Disappointing to lose a sloppy goal at the death, the Rose fans will be dead chuffed that their hero notched one. Top performer for me was Lewis Nicolson, although if Doran carries on looking like he’s the born again messiah, things could work out pretty decent. A bit early to judge the new signings, none of them stood out for me. At least we got the très puntos on a day when there were some shockers elsewhere.

I was thinking the same but just looked it up and it was actually 2009/10. The season we overhauled Dundee to win the title, Airdrie finished bottom. We got 3 wins and a draw against them.

So I had another look and I think Montrose are the SPFL club we are most overdue to play. July 2009 in the Challenge Cup.

Paul Ritchie and Edward Ofere came to mind.

Ritchie was a proven veteran goalscorer at a time when we were a desirable club to join. Likewise Eddie was on loan when we we were one of the best teams in Scotland. You might add Toddy and Fisher but that would be pushing it… Keatings looked like a class signing but it never really paid off.

But then there was John Baird. Scott Boden. Billy King. Doumbouya. Manny Duku. Joe Hardy. Mitch Curry. And Oakley and Austin were both gash IMO although some might disagree.
    Edit - forgot Susan 😂

If Billy goes it’ll be an even longer season than the dark days of last winter when we were getting thumped by the likes of Morton. The Lafferty rumours are depressing. What a staunch club we’re becoming.

That’s what made me ask if anyone knew about when tickets were being posted. I didn’t get an e-mail either (and I’ve checked my spam).

    Likewise

Is there anyone employed at the club to answer the telephones? When I phoned to get information about tickets for the cup final, it rang day after day with no answer, I had to eventually go down to the stadium to get tickets, and now it seems to be the same for the season tickets.

Same here, hit or a miss any time I try them. Eventually got through the other day when I thought it might be lunch break. Got Emma but wondering if they just let it go to voicemail when they’re busy.

You mean he also does someone else's job on the radio?

This habit of spending Saturdays at the wee team has been a bit of a sore point for a while. Also a friend of mine, who has a ST at Tynecastle, took hospitality for the Celtic game in March. So I see him on FB getting selfies with Robbo. Fair enough our game was on the Friday night but even so...

Yes...I went to Charlton and saw us win 1-0 if I remember...and you and I went to Birmingham City's ground [David Shinnie was in their team]

Ah yes, his two brothers Andrew and Graeme also featured 😂

Netherdale, Galashiels. Home of Gala Fairydean, now Gala Fairydean Rovers. Wasn't at the Scottish Cup game in question but have visited the ground since to see the main stand which is a modernist masterpiece designed by Peter Womersley. Nicw wee film aired on A View from the Terrace on YouTube if anyone interested.

In the 1980s I watched Caley from a stand that is now a category A listed building. Where was I?

Met this guy David Bauckham when he flew all the way up from Sussex to see Gala v Whitehill. Very detailed article.

Well I usually have a decent memory without having to look stuff up, but for all the great games in that season, I completely blanked the fact that Airdrie were even in the division. I see that we beat them 1-0 away with a Rooney pen, and I was there but can’t remember a thing 😂
