Jock - found an earlier clipping on player by player reviews from the 1950s and it stated the following for George Pyke:
George Pyke (Centre Forward)
What a man! Misses two or three snips and is torn to shreds by the goal loving fans. Then scores two or three "impossible" goals and all is forgiven. A worker indefatigable and a mixer that has mixed manys a defence into making blunders it would not normally do. In this way turns defeat into victory when all seems lost. Strong, robust and a "giver and a taker" with a flashing smile or a growl like a wounded bear. A personality for who Thistle have been long thankful.
Not sure about some of the reporting language of the day but sounds like the kind of player we could do with at TCS next season.... ;-)
