The Real McKay A Billy McKay hat-trick earned Inverness a vital three points in a pulsating encounter in the Highland Capital. He even had the luxury of missing a penalty before securing the points with his third poachers goal of the game. Birmingham bound Andy Shinnie rifled one home in the first half as Inverness blitzed the Steelmen before they staged an amazing comeback to keep the fans on the edge of their seats. James McFadden scored a double and top scorer Michael Higdon converted a penalty as the roller coaster went into overdrive, but it was the hosts who showed their mettle and snatched all three points. It was a less than pleasant early summers day as the teams took to the park, but it was a momentous day for Chris Hogg as he returned to first team action at the heart of the defence with David Raven and Gary Warren absent. Owain Tudur-Jones found himself on the bench with Nick Ross included in the starting eleven. Motherwell unsurprisingly were unchanged from the side that humped Celtic the previous week. The game got off to a blistering start and it was the visitors that created the first attacks around the hosts goal, twice in the first couple of minutes. However, Inverness responded by opening the scoring as chief poacher Billy McKay nicked in ahead of the defence at the near post to convert a Meekings cross after a free kick had been charged down by the Motherwell wall. Just the start Inverness needed and they took the game by the scruff of the neck, attacking Motherwell at pace and creating plenty of optimism amongst the crowd. Well were being pressed at every opportunity by the hungry Inverness attack and this led to Foran almost scoring a second goal. Randolph played his defence into trouble with a loose pass and Foran latched onto an even looser pass from Hately. He drove into the box exchanging a one-two with Andy Shinnie and almost scored a spectacular goal from a tight angle as he smacked the post with Randolp beaten. It wouldn't be long before Inverness would extend their lead and McKay turned provider this time as he held up, juggled with the ball then layed off for Andy Shinnie to show why Birmingham want the young Scot as his quick feet took the shot early and the ball whistled low past Randolph for a superb second goal. The third goal was coming as Inverness went looking for more. A long ball forward by Motherwell aimed at Higdon was dealt with by Meekings and Foran sent Andy Shinnie scampering down the right side with a perfectly weighted through ball. He returned the compliment to McKay who once again got across the defender at the near post to direct the ball into the net for another supeb goal. Was this really the same team that played so negatively at Perth last week and had the fans doubting their belief. Twenty seven minutes gone and 3-0 to Inverness. Dreamland! But Motherwell are not second in the league for no reason, and James McFadden threw them a lifeline when he drove a low twenty yarder beyond Reguero to give the Steelmen some hope before the break. Half Time 3-1 Stuart McCall obviously had a wee word in their ear at the interval and Well came out of the blocks flying and within four minutes Higdon had the ball in the net from the spot. Hogg was adjudged to have clipped Ojaama who had got in behind him, the big striker calmly slotting home the penalty, his seventh goal against Inverness this season. Enter Henrik Ojamaa, the flying Estonian would play a big part in the next few moments. He found himself in Willie Collum's book for diving, right on the edge of the box after Chris Hogg went near him and shortly after this he almost scored as Motherwell had Inverness on the back foot now and it took a fine block by Reguero to deny him as he raced in on goal. Inverness should have restored their two goal cushion as Nick Ross was knocked over in the box in a rare break forward. Unfortunately Billy McKay made the job easy for Randolph as his spot kick was weak and predictable, the big keeper diving low to his right to turn the ball away one handed. Two penalties so far and I'm not convinced about either of them. Inverness struggled to clear a concerted Motherwell attck and Ojamaa fed McFadden who drilled home from eight yards. 3-3 in an incredible game where Motherwell should have been out of site by half-time, but were now looking the most likely to go on and win the game. Ojamaa then sprinted clear on the right but Nicky Law could not keep his shot down as he curled one a foot over the bar. Henrik's next involvement would be his last. A rash challenge in midfield on Andy Shinnie drew a second yellow from Collum, and off went Henrik. This turned the game once more and Inverness smelled blood. The outstanding Josh Meekings took the bull by the horns and thundered a 25 yarder towards goal which Randolph did well to parry, diving to his right, but who else, Billy McKay was onto it in a flash to poach his third goal of the game. Inverness saw out the rest of the game without any more problems, but it was not one for the faint hearted and the three points were much needed with the news that St Johnstone had defeated Dundee United to remain one point adrift of us. Full Time 4-3 Well well, who would have thunk it! What a game with both sides giving it laldy, a tremendous advert for the SPL and a far cry from some of the dreich stuff we have been subject to lately. Hats off to Chris Hogg in his first team comeback in such a crucial game, just like he had never been away. Loads of heroes today. Billy McKay is the obvious one, but Andy Shinnie was involved in everything. Graeme Shinnie had his finest game in a long time, subduing the speedy Chris Humphrey and Josh Meekings just gets better and better every time I see him play, outstanding. It would be unfair to single out anyone after that performance, but I'll play it safe and go for Billy McKay. He not only scored a hat-trick, he missed a penalty, set up a goal and ran his little cotton socks off..........bless him! 4th May 2013 Scottish Premier League Tulloch Caledonian Stadium Inverness C.T. 4 - McKay (3, 27, 84), A.Shinnie (25) TEAM: Reguero, G.Shinnie, Hogg, McKay, Draper, Foran, A.Shinnie (Tudur-Jones 89), Ross, Meekings, Doran, Devine SUBS: Mathieson, Sutherland, Polworth, Pepper, Taylor Booked: Foran (5), Draper (57) Sent Off: none Motherwell 3 - McFadden (36, 64), Higdon (pen.49) TEAM: Randolph, Hammell, Law, Hutchinson, Hateley, Humphrey (Kerr 81), Ojamaa, Higdon, Lasley, Ramsden (McHugh 85), McFadden SUBS: Hollis, Higginbotham, Carswell, Francis-Angol, Cummins Booked: Hutchinson (7), Hammell (41), Ojamaa (50), Law (57) Sent Off: Ojamaa (73) Referee Willie Collum Attendance 3857

Raven Mad Inverness are slowly but surely losing their grip on the Euro spot after losing 1-0 to St Johnstone who move to within one point of Butcher's side. It was another tense game which saw Inverness reduced to ten men when defender David Raven was sent off for bringing down Rowan Vine after Antonio Reguero choked a kick-out to the Perth man who sprinted forward. Raven came across him and Vine collapsed, the referee in no doubt that Raven had caused the fall and he was red carded after only twelve minutes. Inverness held out until the 77th minute when sub Nigel Hasselbaink crossed for Steve MacLean to nod home the winner. Not the result Inverness were looking for but despite playing with ten men for most of the game we were still well in the mix until MacLean popped up with the winner. Full credit to Inverness for coping well with the Perth onslaught for so long but in truth it was an untidy game on a pitch akin to the field at Dingwall which saw the ball bobble around and slick passing was at a premium. Andy Shinnie was a late substitute, missing out on a start because of a hamstring niggle which saw Charlie Taylor start. With County and St Johnstone now breathing down our necks, the last three games are going to be just as tense. It's no use waiting for it to happen as seems to be our approach lately. He who dares wins and draws look unlikely to be enough to keep us ahead. 27th Apr 2013 Scottish Premier League McDiarmid Park, Perth St Johnstone 1 - MacLean (76) TEAM: Mannus, MacKay, Anderson, Wright, Scobbie, Tade (Hasselbaink 57), Millar, Craig, Vine (Cregg 87), Abeid (Edwards 42), MacLean SUBS: Tuffey, Doughty, McCracken, Miller Booked: Millar (59) Sent Off: none Inverness C.T. 0 - TEAM: Reguero, Raven, Devine, Meekings, G.Shinnie, Doran, Tudur Jones (A.Shinnie 80), Foran, Draper, Taylor, McKay (Ross 65) SUBS: Mathieson, Hogg, Sutherland, Polworth, Pepper Booked: Devine (7), Taylor (27), G.Shinnie (69) Sent Off: Raven (12) Referee Craig Thomson Attendance 2368

It was where the current Currys electrical Store is now. The Co-Op is roughly where the old Frozen Foods shop was. To anyone who hasnt been in Inverness in the past 25-30 yrs, the whole top end of telford street would be pretty much unrecognisable Telford Street Park was located where Currys is now, the poster was asking about before that ..... also Frozen Foods was on what is currently (part of) B&Q's now derelict site. the Co-op occupies the site that was Muirtown Mills / Laundry / then derelict for a while. better illustrated in pictures ...... This was apparently the area in 1912 [ source: http://maps.nls.uk/atlas/bartholomew/page.cfm?id=1210 ] It shows no football ground anywhere in the vicinity. the same area from 1932 (sorry it is small image) [source: ]http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html] It shows what I believe is the distillery on both sides of Telford Street and the ground in its familiar spot the same area from 1959 (same source as above) It shows more housing, but still distillery, Muirtown Mills, Laundry and football ground the same area from 1981 (again, same source) shows a lot more housing, distillery still there on both sides of the street but Muirtown Mills no longer there. These were warehouses from my recollection that were derelict by the time B&Q was built on the site of the distillery opposite. Am Baile also has some good old maps http://www.ambaile.org.uk/en/search/results.jsp?layout=list.50&desc=Advanced search for Maps (Subject &index=50&storeId=1366985064590 , not sure if any of those give more info for Carse area and there is also http://www.oldmapsonline.org/

I didnt say he was gone ... I said he had never made it into the 1st team squad since February. If I were to adjust my theory, I would still say something happened (discussion/argument about playing time) in February, as he had been in the starting lineup or at the very least a sub for most games before then, but you may very well be correct in saying the later incidents were indeed the last straw ..... definitely more like Bajram Fetai than Roman Golobart in terms of loanees it would seem
-
I wondered about that ... he was always in the squad for much of the season, started a few games, then appeared as a sub quite a lot .... last game where he featured in the squad was 16th February, but since then he disappeared without a trace. We have played 8 games since then, and with all due respect to the younger players I will mention, I would think he would have got into the squad ahead of Gibbons, Polworth, Laing, Christie etc. He didnt even make the bench when we played St Johnstone at the beginning of this month ... and we only named 5 subs for that game ! Seems to me something must have happened around the middle of February? My guess would be on some moaning about being a sub all the time, followed by a request (demand?) to play him or send him back to Arsenal ... with sending back being the option chosen.....

never has been - this is the one voted on in the stadium .. same format as it has always been .

Inverness not in the mood to spoil the party Celtic strolled to an easy victory as Inverness wilted under pressure in the second half. Goals from Gary Hooper, Joe Ledley, Hooper again and substitute Georgios Samaras had Celtic cruising and their fans dancing before Aaron Doran at last scored a goal, but it was only a consolation as Celtic swept to their 44th League title. Inverness had only offered token resistance to the Celtic juggernaut as they brushed past us with ease and quite frankly the scoreline flattered us as the Hoops went into party mode. The only thing to brighten up this thumping was the score from Perth later in the day as St Johnstone and County served up a 2-2 draw which means that neither club gained more than one point on our tally. The second half was a far cry from the first half as we mopped up Celtic's advances fairly comfortably before the break. Once Hooper started the goal spree, Inverness were cut open time and time again and the withdrawal of Gary Warren left gaps at the back which Celtic exploited with pace and precision. This game was always likely to be a tough assignment, and so it proved as Celtic's greater resources gradually took control of the game and the result is no surprise, although Butcher may be a tad annoyed at the manner in which we handed the initiative to the Hoops. However you can't take anything away from Celtic who were always on course to win the SPL, just a matter of when and Inverness need to knuckle down and get on with the next four games which will be more of a level playing field. 21st Apr 2013 Scottish Premier League Celtic Park, Glasgow Celtic 4 - Hooper (61, 73), Ledley (66), Samaras (88) TEAM: Forster, Lustig (McCourt 84), Ambrose, Wilson, Mulgrew, Forrest (Izaguirre 46), Wanyama, Ledley, Commons, Hooper, Stokes (Samaras 68) SUBS: Zaluska, Rogic, Watt, Kayal Booked: Wanyama (79) Sent Off: none Inverness C.T. 1 - Doran (90) TEAM: Reguero, Raven, Warren (Devine 50), Meekings, G.Shinnie, Tudur-Jones, Draper, Doran, Foran, A.Shinnie (Taylor 63), McKay SUBS:Mathieson, Hogg, Ross, Sutherland, Polworth Booked: Devine (80) Sent Off: none Referee Kevin Clancy Attendance 55000

Although you are a master of debate IHE, you master baiting doesnt seem to be attracting anyone better luck on the next fishing expedition,

You are comparing apples and oranges ! Without opening up another merger debate, ICT was formed from two non-league teams who ultimately decided (or were told) a joint application to join the senior structure would be more likely to succeed. Lower division teams are already part of the senior structure so other than finance, what would be their motivation? an interesting list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_football_club_mergers This is a touch arrogant is it not? What gives anyone the right to tell other teams to merge? It is something teams would have to decide for themselves, just like we did, and for whatever reasons they can put forward to their fans. Not sure how East Fife and Cowdenbeath fit into the mix as I dont know a lot about each of their histories off the top of my head, but having a couple of friends who are Pars and Raith supporters, I know that telling either of them that their teams should merge is likely to be met with a swift kick to the chuckies! They have quite a rivalry, and both have a fairly distinguished history in both the top leagues and also the lower leagues .... Would you be happy for a St Mirren fan to tell us ICT and County should merge because we are both from the Highlands? or that we should have a three team merger including Elgin? Would also like to know how you know that a merged team in fife would have a far bigger support? You assume that to be the case, but reality suggests that a percentage of fans of the pre-merger teams would not support the merger (we know this happens - from experience). If crowds were up at all, then based on the figures you posted, I would guess the increase would likely be negligible. It may happen due to finances somewhere along the line - obviously Dunfermline are in deep trouble right now - but it is not something we should even consider forcing on lower league teams, many of whom are happy to remain small community based clubs.

I am going to say it .... yup .... I agree with IHE !!! Not sure about 14-14-14, but IHE is right, every system that could be proposed would be flawed in someone's eyes. For me, whatever the solution is, the foundation has to be simple ..... no splits or complicated realignments of leagues in mid season, no complicated self-preservationist tactics or rules, no multiple ruling bodies and a focus on turning the downward spiral in the opposite direction ... I tend to fall into the 16-16-16 camp with the addition of 6 new (ambitious) teams from juniors/HFL/South. If the likes of Caley Thistle and County can reach the SPL in 10 and 18 years respectively, then there is no reason others could not follow a similar path .... 16 teams does present a problem of only 15 home games per season as opposed to the current 18 in SFL or 19 in SPL, but maybe there could be some creative thinking on that with the establishment of an additional national cup competition or even regionalised cup competitions with home/away legs that would inevitably lead to a few derbies (and increased crowds). Failing that, if adding ambitious teams is not an option, I wonder if 20-20 might be an option? It would obviously call for 2 teams to be lost to non-league play, but with current finances and the game dying on its feet that - unfortunately - may not be as contentious, or as problematic an issue as it sounds .. go 20-22 initially and drop it to 20-20 over a few years through attrition. 2 leagues, 3up, 3 down, playoffs for a few more, pyramid system below that to allow ambitious teams a route into the 'big time', and all being run under a single organisation where each member club has a single vote and a simple majority is needed for most decisions. Youth development would also have to be taken seriously but not all clubs could afford academies so perhaps regional academies (initially) funded by the league and/or any grant funding available which could then be utilised by all clubs both big and small (assuming they did not already have their own that they chose to continue using). I know this will never happen, but its a fairly simple concept ..... These are ideas off the top of my head ... they may be good, they may be crap, but something has to change and for me the most important part is getting the foundation right and then building on that ... the rejected proposal doesnt seem to address that, but no-one else has really shouted a viable alternative from the rooftops .......

Good thing - domestically at least, but from the article, it sounds like they are seeking to implement it in a strange manner where high value contracts are already in place with players, and 13 of the 20 teams are already over, or in some cases well over that figure. The idea is good, but the implementation seems half-arsed, and the ticket money clause also seems wide open to abuse. Also not sure how teams competing in Europe will see it when they cant spend what they want, and may lose ground to the huge European teams who can spend indiscriminately. Cant see it working properly unless there is a Europe-wide cap. Its a bit like describing our own frustrations when a player in Scotland moves from the SPL to the championship or lower and still gets paid more than he can earn in Scotland ...... Most folk know I watch Toronto FC in MLS. MLS is of course, a salary cap league but the cap is set far far lower than the EPL .... $2.95m per team or $56.05m in total. That equates to about £36.4m for the entire league ... a lot less than the £52-£60 million the EPL will set for each individual team over the next three years. Each team can of course have up to 3 designated players who earn over the individual player maximum - like David Beckham, Thierry Henry, and Torsten Frings did for each of the teams I mentioned above, or like Barry Robson or Kenny Miller if you want to make it a bit more Scottish .... but no team can fill their squad with huge wages just because they have the cash to do so .... The biggest reason for this rule in MLS is because of what happened the first time round in the USA when the forerunner of MLS allowed teams like New York Cosmos to fill their teams full of (fading) superstars on ridiculous wages. The crowds did not come out as the sport was not really marketed, or of interest to most Americans, the wages were unsustainable, and "lesser" teams just could not compete and the league finally imploded. This time round, MLS has a number of measures to encourage slow but steady growth that has seen it rise from 10 teams in 1996 to 19 teams in 2013. However it is a lot different than most leagues in the world The league "owns" all of the teams. Each team has an owner-operator who is a shareholder in the league Each team must establish (or already have) a youth Academy as a condition of entry In order to control costs, the league shares revenues and holds the players contracts instead of players being contracted to individual teams. They also have to approve salary negotiations. When a transfer is made to a league outside of MLS (like Maurice Edu to Rangers for example), MLS gets the money and passes about 75% of it to the club, the rest is shared. The club must use that money for development, infrastructure or other things like that. A small proportion of it may be used as "allocation money" for a single year to allow the team to go a bit over the salary cap. Toronto used the Maurice Edu money to replace the artificial grass at BMO field with real grass, and also ploughed some of it into a huge new Soccer Academy complex they built In terms of the salary cap, its complicated but works ..... these are the main bullet points Teams can have a squad of up to 30 players Salary cap is $2.95m (US$) per year, per team The first 20 spots on the squad count against the salary cap Players in spots 21-30 do not count against the cap and are known as off-budget players. You cannot add high earners into those spots to get around the cap. Players in spots 21-24 must earn minimum of $46500 Players in spots 25-30 must earn minimum of $35125 (the league minimum) Players who earn league minimum must be under 24 Generation Adidas players are also "off budget" and can be anywhere in the squad from 1-30. These are players that have not yet graduated from college, but who MLS has signed to a contract. They can still finish college, but are available to teams without a cap hit. They tend to be good players. Maurice Edu, Landon Donovan, Carlos Bocanegra, are a few who came through that system. Generation Adidas players are usually paid more - sometimes a lot more - than spots 21-30 but not count against the cap. Homegrown (Youth players promoted from team Academy). These players generally fit somewhere into 21-30 in the squad but up to 2 per year can be paid more than the 21-30 wage structure and not be counted against the cap. Each team can have up to 3 designated players. The salary cap hit for a DP is $368,750 against your overall total. the player can be paid more (Beckham/Henry were getting $5m per year) but the team owners pay this. A DP coming to a club in mid-season is a cap hit of 50% of the full year total. Teams are encouraged to sign young DPs (to try and get away from the fading superstar image I guess). A player who is 20 or under on a DP contract is only a $150K cap hit, one who is 21-23 is a $200K hit. Interestingly enough, there is talk over here - mainly from fans - about getting rid of the salary cap ... but personally, I would like to see it rise to maybe $5m instead of $3m which would allow teams to sign a strong squad as well as 2 or 3 quality DPs ..... right now, teams with DPs tend to have weaker players further down the squad list as they dont have as much wiggle room in salary .... but that is part of the levelling factor ......
