  3. Last gasp Saints Built like a heavyweight boxer, Uche Ikpeazu used his strength to turn and poke his shot behind Ross Munro to win this tie that was on a knife edge as we approached full time, just when we were all getting ready for a penalty kick shoot-out. St Johnstone had dominated possession in the opening 45' without threatening to run away with the game. Billy Mckay, looking suspiciously offside spurned an early chance for the hosts as the flag stayed down with keeper Toby Steward blocking the strikers effort from inside the box as he bore down on goal after slack defensive work by the visitors. Thereafter, the first half mainly belonged to St Johnstone's possession game but clear cut chances were at a premium. Best moment was Ross Munro acrobatically clawing away a header from Adama Sibideh and Jamie Gullan might have done better than blasting an effort over the bar as Saint's enjoyed the majority of the ball. After the break we looked more positive going forward, especially after the hour when Jordan Alonge and Liam Sole replaced Wotherspoon and Billy Mckay. Liam Sole is a bag of tricks with plenty of pace and he troubled the Perth defence, something we were unable to do often enough in the first half. Alfie Stewart saw his free kick from 25 yards tipped over the bar as we pressed for the opener. Desperate defending kept Sole at bay and just when penalties looked inevitable came the sucker punch from the big man. Sickener after we looked in control of the second half. Joe Chalmers almost sprung a surprise direct from the subsequent restart, the keeper back tracking to tip his on target shot from the halfway spot over the bar and Sole produced another dazzling run past dozens of players before his shot was deflected just wide. Alas, we just came up short in what turned into an entertaining game after a drab first half. Full Time: 0-1 A tough one to take after competing well for long spells in the game. The introduction of Sole and Alonge gave us more energy and flair and we were unfortunate not to take advantage of that injection they gave us. St Johnstone did what they needed to do and got their reward right at the end. The other game in our group saw East Kilbride beat Elgin City 1-4 Our two final games are both away ties at East Kilbride & Raith Rovers Nobody said it would be easy. Video highlights from Premier Sports TV No, Listen... he went that way Match reaction from CTOtm4tj: Much livelier second half, especially when Sole and Alonge came on. Sole has been the most exciting player I have seen up here for a loooong time. He has plenty tricks in his bag and almost scored a sensational goal after beating abput nine players before his strike was deflected just wide. Strength was what got Perth their goal, nothing else. Excited for the season ahead with Sole ready to rip up League1. Alonge looks quality as well. Hiro: Not much between the teams. I think we played some decent stuff, unlike under our previous manager it looks like there's a point to what we're doing. Shocking goal to give away, Danny will be really disappointed with that defending, fell for Ikpeazu's only trick. Huisdean: As for the game, we were good in parts and probably deserved a draw. Still tend to overplay too much around the box though, please just shoot if the opportunity presents its self. Today was also a good workout in terms of fitness. Doofers Dad: In general, I think we played pretty well today. Judging by the numbers of supporters who were standing in the main stand to applaud the team off the pitch at the end of the game, I would say most would agree with me. 5. Difficult watch to be honest. Unable to hold onto the ball long enough to create anything of note apart from an early effort when we were about a yard offside. The keeper saved anyway. St J have been wasteful with their superior possession. Still, level at the break with Munro having to make one superb save so far. Lot of misplaced passes out of defence creating a lack of entertainment for the hosts. Stewart replacing Millen at RB. Otherwise as you would expect. Sole and Alonge on the bench.

  7. St Johnstone League Cup This will be a tough test for our new look squad against relegated St Johnstone who will be looking to bounce back to the Premiership after finishing bottom of the table last season and will fancy their chances of progressing out of the group stages in this League Cup encounter at the Caledonian Stadium. They had to battle hard to overcome East Kilbride in their opening Group F tie eventually sealing a 1-3 win over the new League2 side. Our opening fixture was in midweek where we edged out Elgin City with a hard fought but ultimately deserved 2-0 win over the Borough Briggs side. Early days yet with most teams still building up to the bigger challenges ahead with the League campaign getting underway in early August and teams looking to hit the ground running. Ross Munro appears to be our number 1 keeper and seems decent. the back four of Millen, Devine, Savage and Strachan have those positions ring fenced. We have an abundance of midfielders and that is where selections will be easily rotated on a horses for courses basis. Allan, MacLeod, Chalmers and Wotherspoon are all accomplished players with new signings Alfie Stewart, Jordan Alonge and Liam Sole able and willing to step in seamlessly. Robbie Thompson is also still here and will be pushing for a start. Calum MacLeod looks likely to be the big breakthrough player this season. The experience and guile of David Wotherspoon as an attacking midfielder will be invaluable in assisting Billy Mckay and Luis Longstaff up front. Kell's has made no secret of the fact that he want Alfie Bavidge back here as well. What an asset that would be as goal scorers are in short supply at the Caledonian Stadium just now. 12. Here's our report from the game Astra Edge First Leg Inverness' first dabble at competitive European football ended in a first leg defeat at the hands of FC Astra from Romania. Maybe they should rename the club Astraturf as they spent plenty time lying on the grass for no apparent reason, although there is a decent football side lurking in there somewhere The visitors secured a valuable away win from a set piece where debut keeper Owain Fon Williams might feel he could have done better than to palm Constantin Budescu's on target shot high into the net. Despite plenty of effort, the home side could not get their first Euro goal with Doran going closest with a curling effort late in the second half. John Hughes sprung a Euro surprise by putting new signing, keeper Owain Fon Williams straight into the starting line-up at the expense of cup final hero Ryan Esson. Danni Lopez and Nat Wedderburn also made their competitive debut's in a much changed side. No starts for David Raven, Carl Tremarco, Jordan Roberts, Richie Foran or Liam Polworth. Josh Meekings played at right back and Danny Williams looked to be in Graeme Shinnie's position at left back. Danny Devine and Garry Warren were the central defenders. Doran, Tansey, Draper and Wedderburn were the midfield with Ryan Christie backing up new front man Lopez. Astra were mainly an unknown quantity but we had been warned about Constantin Budescu prior to the game. Bagpipes welcomed the 5,500 plus crowd and the stage was set for our Euro adventure to begin. There was little between the sides in a tentative opening to the game played in front of a healthy crowd and Christie and Doran looked lively in the opening jousting. Christie spun outside the box but his hasty shot was deflected wide as Inverness controlled the pace of the game. Our ball retention was decent, but the downside of this was a lack of penetration in the final third. Lopez looked comfortable with his back to the goal, but his lack of match sharpness was evident. Astra were reluctant to be drawn forward but when they did, they looked pacey enough to offer a threat, especially Brazilian wide player William. The goal we didn't want came after 24 minutes when Ross Draper, tracking back made a needless challenge when two other defenders looked favourite to clear the danger. Budescu took the free kick and lifted it up and over the wall and slightly right of debutant keeper Williams. He appeared slow to react and when he did, he only succeeded in palming the ball high behind him for a disappointing goal to lose, considering the shot appeared to be fairly tame and routine. It was a game void of opportunities and the half ended with Inverness toiling to make much headway, and Astra content to pick us off as we edged our way across the park, goal scorer Budescu the main threat and wide player William looking dangerous on the break. Half Time 0-1 The second half saw Inverness play towards a packed North Stand and they approached the game with more urgency from the whistle. Doran and Christie were still looking the most likely to carve open an opportunity for Yogi's lads and the Inverness corner count was mounting as Astra looked content to sit on their advantage. Visiting keeper Lung was fortunate when he made a meal of a low shot from Doran. He flapped at the bouncing ball and managed to divert it for a corner much to his relief, and the groans of the crowd behind him. Danny Williams fired a shot from distance that was always too high but with plenty of power as Inverness pressed forward but it was Astra that almost sneaked a second goal on the break. Left winger William was fed through by Budescu as they came out of their Hamilton Accies like shell and broke forward at pace down the left. William should have done better than hit the outside of the post as he bore down on Fon Williams. A let off for Inverness. Aaron Doran spurned the best chance for Inverness when he received the ball inside the box on the left side. From 15 yards he picked his spot with a trademark Doran curler. Unfortunately that spot was a yard wide of the post with the target at his mercy. Danni Lopez was sent through on the Inverness right but he shot as he entered the box on the angle and Lung easily gathered the effort. Oh how we were crying out for a bit of Marley's pace going forward. The game drifted away from us as Astra killed the tie down the touchline and despite our best efforts on the night, it was not to be. Full Time 0-1 It was not to be on the night as Inverness fell just short. Good effort by the hastily constructed side and still plenty to play for yet. Plenty of pretty passing but unfortunately a lack of penetration, and the goal from a set piece left a nasty taste in the mouth. Williams for Esson; I'm not convinced that was the smartest trick Yogi has pulled. Makeshift defence coped well for the most part, Meekings a bit like a fish out of water at times on the right. Wedderburn did well and looks like a heavyweight boxer. Match fitness will do him no harm, likewise Lopez on the fitness side. Draper will be disappointed at gifting the free kick from which they scored and some of his general play and passing was pre-season at best. Our best performers on the night were Doran and Warren with Ryan Christie being the pick of our players for a lively and intelligent European debut. Biggest cheer of the night was reserved for the return of Richie Foran. Good to see him back in the last six minutes, although the game was slowly running away from us as the Romanians were content to stay on the turf for an extra roll after tumbling over rather tamely. That's European football for you. Overall, Inverness can pat themselves on the back after their Euro debut where they matched a decent side who showed them some new tricks. It will be a difficult task to try and overcome the deficit, but at 1-0, there's still plenty to play for. By the way, the new strips look pretty kool. Onwards to Astra for the return leg where there will be a sizeable following making the trek. Win or lose, I'm sure everyone will enjoy the occasion. Alfie was on the bench with Doc Proc in the dugout. No room for James Mercer though. Ross Draper took his place in the visitors starting XI with Lewis Hyde on the bench. A warm night in the Highland capital saw the first chance fall to Calum MacLeod but his shot was wide to the left. His next effort was saved low down by the keeper. Shortly after this Mathew Strachan's cross found Luis Longstaff in the box but his header was too high. Ross Draper saw his header saved as Elgin came out of defence and Longstaff had another header blocked before Paul Allan's shot was cleared off the line and David Wotherspoon's follow up was blocked. Half chances at both ends and around the half hour Jack MacIver hit the woodwork from twenty yards with a fierce effort to deny Elgin the opener. However, Billy Mckay did open the scoring minutes later from a tight angle after the visiting defence failed to clear their lines properly when Wotherspoon was blocked by Ross Draper. Longstaff added a second five minutes before the break knocking in from Strachan's cross. Elgin forced a couple of corners as the interval approached but Ryan Sargent headed over as the first half came to a close. Not much in it at the break, but it's Inverness that have the goals. HALF TIME: 2-0 Kane Hester got a shot away early in the second half with Ross Munro saving before a flurry of activity around the visitors box saw Billy Mckay's effort blocked with Wotherspoon firing over and Strachan also being blocked. Munro saved from substitute Lyall Booth, spreading himself well and Hester blasted wide when put through towards goal just before he was substituted. The inevitable spate of second half substitutions broke play up and play became untidy but with three minutes remaining two of the subs combined with Jordan Alonge heading over a tempting ball in from Liam Sole. That ended the action and Inverness kick started their League Cup campaign with a hard fought but ultimately comfortable win over auld enemies Elgin City. That ended the action and Inverness kick started their League Cup campaign with a hard fought but ultimately comfortable win over auld enemies Elgin City. FULL TIME: 2-0
  18. With Elgin City taking advantage of the loan partnership co-operation with Aberdeen, they have immediately bolstered their squad for tonight's Premier Sports Cup tie against the Caley Jags. Left-back Dylan Ross (17) and central defenders Jamie Mercer (17) and Noah McDonnell (17) have all now made the switch to Allan Hale’s Elgin and will be immediately available for selection in tonight's game. Elgin make four changes from the side that was thrashed by Raith Rovers at the weekend. Booth, Hyde, Cameron and McDonald drop to the bench being replaced by Mark Gallagher, Josh O’Connor, Connall Ewan and Dylan Ross who is making his debut after the loan agreement with Aberdeen was finalised.

  20. Mine originally threw up an error on paypal. It asked for my email and password, told me it was wrong twice so I noticed I could pay direct by card. When transaction went through it thanked me for paying by paypal although it never took the email or password I offered. Anyway, it seemed to have worked somehow. Yep, it's a PayPal transaction on my bank account...
  21. comment_577498 League Cup Opener Inverness start the season in semi earnest as we enter the Premier Sports Cup Group F on Tuesday night against Elgin City at the Caledonian Stadium. We had Saturday off as the competition got into full swing at the weekend. It kicked off on Friday night with Partick Thistle beating Edinburgh City 1-4. On Saturday a full programme of ties saw one or two inevitable 'shock results' as teams find their way after a Summer of rebuilding. A couple of notable casualties in Stranraer beating Ross County on penalties (6-5) after a 1-1 draw and Airdrie beating Dundee 1-0 at Dens Park. Spartans were victorious over Queens Park whilst Killie had to battle hard to eventually overcome Brora Rangers 0-2. Arbroath took the bonus point after a 0-0 draw with St Mirren and Clyde missed out on penalties to Premiership Motherwell after a 2-2 draw. Hearts beat Neil Lennon's Dunfermline Athletic 4-1 in the late game on Saturday with Charlie Gilmour making his competitive Pars debut with Keith Bray on the bench. In our Group F: St Johnstone overturned an early lead for East Kilbride to come away with a 1-3 win whilst Raith Rovers put five past Elgin City at Borough Briggs in a 1-5 win. All teams still finding their feet after the usual closed season merry-go-round and we are no different as the results indicate from our indifferent pre-season form. However, I am assured that Liam Sole has pace to burn and could be a useful asset to the Caley Jags who have often been accused of being over ponderous at times. It's looking like we still need to source an out and out striker to save Billy's legs. Early days, we will just have to see what the next couple of weeks brings as we head towards the opening fixtures of the League1 campaign where we make our way to the Training Ground Derby at New Central Park, Kelty on 2nd August. Inverness have brought in keepers Ross Munro and Logan Ross from County, David Wotherspoon, Joe Chalmers, Liam Sole, Ross Millen and Jordan Alonge to compliment those that extended their stay or already had contracts like Danny Devine, Luis Longstaff, Remi Savage, Paul Allan, Billy Mckay, Mathew Strachan, Adam Mackinnon and Robbie Thompson amongst others. I expect those I have named to make up the bulk of our squad for Tuesday night. Elgin were cuffed 5-1 last Saturday by Championship side Raith Rovers with Jack Murray scoring for Elgin. Ross Draper with the assist for that one, alas he also conceded a penalty. Notice that Lewis Hyde also started for City. They also have experienced marksmen in Kane Hester and Brian Cameron. Just over 1,000 fans attended this one.
